ALPINE SAFETY

850 – 2.096 m

Pristine deep snow slopes and perfectly prepared ski runs in Salzburg‘s ski areas: a few tips for your safety.

PAGE 4

1. Respect for others A skier or snowboarder much behave in such a way that he does not endanger or affect others. 2. C ontrol of speed and skiing or snowboarding A skier or snowboarder must move with control. He must adapt his speed and manner of skiing or snowboarding to his personal ability and to the prevailing conditions of terrain, snow and weather as well as to the density of traffic. 3. Choice of route A skier or snowboarder coming from behind must choose his route in such a way that he does not endanger skiers or snowboarders ahead.

WEARING HELMETS PROVIDES PROTECTION Whether carving, alpine skiing, or snowboarding down into the valley – wearing a helmet should be a matter of course for every winter athlete. Heavy alcohol consumption has no place in the ski areas. Unfortunately, many accidents occur here between 3 and 6 pm, often when the lifts are already closed. At this time, the slopes are being prepared for the next day, and for their own safety, skiers should no longer be on the slopes. TOUR PREPARATION The same applies to our pristine deep snow ski slopes with endless white powder: freeriding enthusiasts rejoice. Of course, safety begins not when you first leave the secure ski area but when you first leave the hotel. When carefully reading through the current avalanche reports (u.a. auf www.alpin.salzburg.at) you can already draw the first conclusions: What would be a responsible thing to do today and what would not? The proper selection of a route is a basic requirement for a successful and enjoyable tour. Be sure to ask friends, locals, or accommodation providers who are already familiar with the routes. Look closely at the map. Here you can discern the steepness of the terrain.

IMPERATIVE EMERGENCY EQUIPMENT Keep in mind that the consistency of snow may change due to changing weather conditions and temperatures. Therefore, you should always take with you emergency equipment – consisting of an avalanche transceiver, a shovel, an avalanche probe, and first-aid equipment including a bivouac sack and mobile radio. Many freeriders no longer want to do without a so-called avalanche airbag, also called an ABS pack. The airbag (ABS avalanche airbag system) is a re-usable rescue device that increases the probability of survival for people caught in an avalanche. Only those who are well-equipped and have a knowledge of the town and avalanche conditions should leave secured slopes. Safety equipment and knowledge about its use are a must. Appropriate equipment and materials can be rented in the sports stores and ski schools.

ALPINE SAFETY

APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR ON THE SKI SLOPES Of course, no one wants to think about injuries or skiing accidents. But something that can bring us down as skiers is placing too high demands on ourselves. To avoid serious injury, this should be the motto on the slopes: skiing is supposed to be fun! Therefore, whatever challenges we tackle on the slopes must be in accordance with our own abilities. If you overestimate your abilities and demand too much of yourself, this increases the risk of injury. Experts recommend taking regular breaks so as to prevent fatigue and becoming physically overwhelmed. If you no longer feel fit, then you should call it quits for the day – children especially should avoid overexertion on the slopes and should not ski all day. Overconfidence and a risky skiing style are among the main causes of accidents.

FIS SLOPE RULES

4. Overtaking A skier or snowboarder may overtake another skier or snowboarder above or below and to the right or to the left provided that he leaves enough space for the overtaken skier or snowboarder to make any voluntary or involuntary movement. 5. Entering, starting and moving upwards A skier or snowboarder entering a marked run, starting again after stopping or moving upwards on the slopes must look up and down the slopes to make sure he can do so without endangering himself or others. 6. Stopping on the ski run Unless absolutely necessary, a skier or snowboarder must avoid stopping on the ski run in narrow places or where visibility is restricted. After a fall in such a place, a skier or snowboarder must move clear of the ski run as soon as possible. 7. Climbing and descending on foot A skier or snowboarder either climbing or descending on foot must keep to the side of the ski run. 8. Respect for signs and markings A skier or snowboarder must respect all signs and markings. 9. Assistance At accidents, every skier or snowboarder is obligated to assist. 10. Identification Every skier or snowboarder and witness, whether a responsible party or not, must exchange names and addresses following an accident.

At the summit station, a wide summit panorama stretches out in front of you that will take your breath away. Your skis are snapped on, your ski goggles are over your eyes, and your first ski run in the beautiful snow is awaiting you. It‘s almost like an addictive drug: when carving down our excellently prepared slopes, the Salzburg ski areas will cast a spell over you.
