Pirkner Weavers One of the most traditional businesses in Lungau, the Pirkner weaving mill – generally known as “Sauerfelder Weberei” – has been in existence for over 600 years. Already by the year 1388, it was reported in a chronicle that a weaver had worked in Sauerfeld for Count Kuenburg. In 1875 Johann Pirkner rented a room at "Schneiderlenz" in Sauerfeld; from there, he traveled around as a weaver. In 1883 he acquired the then shabby "old weaving house", where he mainly produced farmer’s linen. In 1919, Sebastian Pirkner took over the weaving mill, and five years later he began the art of weaving with old, traditional patterns. In 1949, the family business finally relocated to a new building. Daughter Maria Pirkner continued the weaving mill starting in 1953 with five looms. Since 1987 the hand weaving has been led by Rosalinde Künstner, a niece of Maria Pirkner. The product lines of this weaving business are diverse; it ranges from upholstery fabric and curtains to linen and more. The Sauerfelder hand weaving mill has, in the

meantime, become synonymous with exclusive handcrafts. Its products are sold in almost all countries of the world. Come see for yourself!
