Trautenfels Castle Trautenfels Castle, landmark of the central Ennstal valley, sits majestically on a rocky peak at the foot of Grimming mountain. In 1261, a castle at this strategically important location was mentioned for the first time: Neuhaus Castle. In the 17th century, the building was redecorated by Count Siegmund Friedrich von Trauttmannsdorff in baroque design. In 13 exhibition rooms arranged in a kaleidoscopic style, the landscape museum showcases the cultural and natural history of the Styrian Ennstal valley and the Ausseerland region. The special exhibition for 2011 called “Der grimmige Berg (The Grim(m) Mountain). Mons Styriae altissimus” gives a comprehensive picture of Grimming mountain which, standing 10km high and 3km wide, dominates the central Ennstal valley and is one of Europe’s largest free-standing mountains.

The Heinrich Harrer Museum showcases uncountable fascinating exhibits, many of which Heinrich Harrer, who was born and bred in Hüttenberg, brought home from his many journeys. His expeditions took him to Africa, Borneo, and – of course – Tibet, amongst other destinations. The Tibet exhibition also features a Lingkor – a Tibetian trail – which is located at the rock face opposite the museum. Knappenberg is home to the world’s third largest mineral site, and more than 200 rare and colourful minerals are on display here. The showmine depicts the hard life of the miners. The genuine tunnels dating back to the year 1567 give an insight into working methods, tools and working clothes of long gone times. In the Doll Museum, the dolls of Helga Riedel depict life in Hüttenberg as well as customs such as the “Hüttenberger Reiftanz” dance, whilst stories by the authoress Dolores Vieser bring the dolls to life. People who lived in the ancient world believed that all the Gods belonged to a large family of the undead, residing on Mount Olympus. From there, they ruled over Heaven and Earth, the Sea and the Underworld. They called special talents their own and exercised great power, but they also had human weaknesses. Visitors of the exhibition will learn more about the myths behind these concepts and, as such, will be able to decipher the encrypted images. The exhibition also gives an insight into the religious rites of the Greeks and the Romans and depicts the Roman Theatre. Moreover, it sheds light on the worship of Gods and antique cult sites.
