‘Spectacular views and challenging moments…’

Writer Ilija Trojanow opens his Tirol travel diaries. 24 August, Sölden There are many people who say that the bicycle is the better ski: it can deal with all types of weather; it can also be ridden uphill – astonishingly fast by some people. In summer, the bicycle is the best companion in nature, particularly on days that are so beautiful that it is impossible to imagine that the sunshine

6

and blue skies could disappear. Other people feel the same way. One day during at the height of summer people are keen to leave Sölden and take a pleasant tour to Vent in the most remote corner of the Ötztal valley. Is there anything better than cycling a few kilometres through such a inspiring mountain landscape without any rush or pressure until reaching the Rofenhöfe farms, the highest permanently inhabited mountain farms in Austria? Perhaps it would be better to ride on forest and dirt roads in this mountain bike Eldorado than on the asphalt in the valley.

25 August, Ötztal valley It’s five in the morning, just a few degrees above zero. Countless people are standing shivering in a queue with minimal equipment but covered generously in milking grease (the stuff they use to protect the cow’s teats). The morning is as clear as the proclamation of a wonderful day. At 6.45 am the starting shot rings out and the cyclists step on their pedals, first down the valley at high speed and with great concentration so as not to get involved in a crash. After 32 km there is a sharp right-hand curve and the wind jackets are quickly removed, ready for

the first test of stamina. Breathing heavily up to Kühtai, the climb to Austria’s highest ski resort is steep, an ascent of about 1,200 m. These are the numbers you learn during preparation, such a steep climb, it’s as if the three-thousand metre mountains just waiting to be conquered. On the pass at an altitude of 2,000 m the first refreshments are available before the descent to Innsbruck, which lies hidden in the valley like a gem protected from all sides. In the meantime, the sun has warmed the air and the fingertips, and suddenly you experience pure joy that can be had from cycling on a day like this. Your legs feel good

so let’s get up the Brenner Pass: keeping up the pace. After a short break for refreshments there is a very fast descent and the hard work on the uphill section is rewarded with ecstatic speeds on the way down. Now it’s really hot, about 30 degrees. Slowly you drag yourself up the last ascent, impatient to reach the next refreshment stop and no longer bothering to admire the view. In the late afternoon – it is cold again – you reach the highest point of the race at an altitude of over 2,500 m. To save time, you don’t put your jacket on again, and you rush down at terrific speed to the Ötztal valley, clocking up speeds of over 80 km/h.

After a good eleven hours, after a day of happiness and agony, after spectacular views and dangerous moments you cross the finish line. The Ötztal valley cycling marathon is one of those unique experiences you will draw energy from in the long hours of your everyday life. 26 August, Kössener Ache Anyone who ventures onto a white water course for the first time underestimates two things: how cold the water is and the strength of the small eddies. In summer, the clear blue water is pleasantly refreshing but the shivering sets in straight away

when someone falls in after an unsuccessful manoeuvre, regardless of whether you are wearing a wetsuit or not. The swirls that seem to follow some inelegant but harmless choreography when viewed from the banks prove to possess fatal guile so that even the slightest cascade (among experts: difficulty level 2) can tip the kayak faster than you can say “Oh my g…”. This all makes the first successful ride through bubbling foam that appears to be everywhere, in front of, behind and on the kayak, in your face and in every tumbling thought, all the more exhilarating. It is astonishing how breathless the many small eddies leave you and how

little your eyes perceive of the spectacular canyon. A beginner feels like a die in a shaker on his first white water ride. Mountain biking Ride – In the final steep curve I am slipping from my left pedal, the tyres of my mountain bike are scrunching over the gravel path. Just before the finish line! I can already see the little hill, the little wooden bench on which I wanted to have a rest. Meanwhile, I can feel my muscles with every step. I have already conquered a number of ascents through the forest today. Now, all my efforts to start again are failing: My rear tyre is sliding to the side. The sun is making its way through the trees, the shadows

of the branches are dancing on the grounds. I am turning round: What a picture! The river hastly carves its way through the narrow valley, the mountains are soaring in the summer sky on both sides. It is fantastically peaceful, only the wind is making some leaves move. Whether the wind will also make me move? I get onto the bike again. This time it works, I am starting to pedal steadily, approaching the mountain.

What is unique about the Summer in the Mountains of Tirol? One of the most amazing highlights of my job is being able to be out in the open air. I get around quite a lot, but if I can challenge the Kitzbüheler Alps on my bike, that’s when my heart races! I recharge my batteries in the peaceful atmosphere. But for me it’s the whole package that counts: the traditions, the Alpine pastures, the cows, the herdsmen and the dairy maids, who are always so open and friendly.

Mountaineering On the top – The mountain hut is still lying in the shadow when we leave early in the morning, but after the first ascent the morning sun is already embracing us. Never are the mountains more beautiful than at the very beginning of the day. The sun is making each mountain shine in a different light. Like a play of colours and contrasts. We are climbing up, soon our path ascends steeply. Our hiking shoes are leaving deep marks in the snow field; we are

14

climbing across rocks, holding tightly to the rope. Our goal is not far any more when we are taking our last break. We are looking down to the valley and observing the hustle and bustle of everyday life. From here, the cars look very small, like little, colourful ants in the chaos on the roads. Then, the wind is getting stronger again, rustling through the grasses. In the sky, it is pushing the clouds along. We are closing our eyes. Let us scale the peak.

Climbing A head for heights – At first view, it looks overwhelming. At second view, the steep rock face reveals another side: a little ledge, a crevice in the cold rock, a perfect grip. The rock requires my full concentration, the only thing that counts here is the next step. My fingers are looking for a hold and manage to find a notch in the rock, my feet can find a ledge and I pull myself further up. Here, the rock is warmed by the sun. In the next crevice, a little harvestman is emerging, crawling over my

16

fingers and climbing up the rock face without any effort. The rock is becoming smoother. It is getting hard to grab hold of it. It takes some time until I manage to find hold. Then I am making my final pulls before getting to the peak. The carabiner snaps, I check my knot, the rope tightens. I put my harness on and my eyes look down: impressive rock face, beautiful. On the rock, a harvestman is climbing up. Might it be the same?

Water sports High tide – The water is making our rafting boat move up and down, to the right and in a circle. The river is asking us for a dance. We, however, are determining the pace. In the rapid of the river, we are turning, keeping the balance, paddling forward and backward. The water is splashing against our faces. Still, all together, we manage to defeat the wild water,

20

to keep control of it. The river unveils all its beauty: The light is refracted in the water, it is glimmering in different colours, very dark, then in green and blue. The next rapid is coming soon, but we still have some time. I am sitting down at the edge, leaning back. The water is embracing and carrying me. I am drifting, I am dancing.
