COVER STORY 2500mm diameter Rocla reinforced concrete pipes being laid for the South-Eastern Outfal l, Melbourne . The 33 km pipeline is Australia 's largest precast concrete pipeline and will convey purified effluent from the Board of Works' treatment plant at Carrum to Bass Strait. The pipes were made in mainly 5m lengths at a special manufacturing complex in Melbourn.e where special machines and handling gear were installed to handle the pipes weighing up to 14.5 tonnes each. Pipes were made by the Rocla roller suspension process and design inc luded the innovative use of shear reinforcement .
