Rodeo News APRA

My name is Mark Gibb, I have only been on the Executive since June so am still finding my feet, but I have been involved in rodeo for the past 40 years so am fairly passionate about the sport!

Firstly I would like to congratulate all of the Pro Tour and newly crowned Australian Champions. Also to each and every competitor for the effort and professionalism that they put in to their respective events throughout the season and at the NFR. Thank you to the Warwick Rodeo and Show Committee for staging a great National Finals Rodeo once again. The attendance at the Annual General Meeting was a little disappointing, with just enough members present to stage the meeting. Remember this is your chance to speak and vote on changes to better your events and the Association. Personally I am confident that the APRA is heading in the right direction.

Associate Professor Bryan Hilbert, BVSc Hon (Melbourne)

To all entering the Christmas Rodeos in the South good luck and safe travels.

PLEASE ADVISE APPROVED PERSONNEL Committees, Contractors and Promotors are reminded that they must inform Head Office of which approved officials will be officiating at their event 2 weeks prior. This is so the office can have them covered under our insurance policy should something unforeseen occur. It is also the responsibility of the above to inform the office of any changes to the officials prior to the rodeo commencing.

PAYING LEVIES AT RODEOS

FRONT COVER PHOTO All Around Cowgirl Ellysa Kenny and All Around Cowboy Campbell Hodson pictured with sponsor Kelly Condon from Bob Berg Designs. Photo by Framed Forever Fotos.

Paying the levy portion of an entry fee at a rodeo is not allowed. If a competitor is unable to compete they can have someone pay their FULL entry fee for them to avoid a turnout fee. Only exception is if on the day, a judge agrees to a visual turnout due to injury. The contestant will then only be liable for the APRA and committee levies plus GST if applicable.

s n e e u Q o e d o R l a n o i t a n Inter e Escaped Broncs and t h National Finals Rodeo. Who could imagine both girls running through long grass, mud and along gravel roads chasing bucking broncs which had escaped from a bogged truck? This was the third and final year of a contract with Warwick to hold the Finals, 1986 was to be in Cootamundra but the Rodeo Queens were in town to promote the rodeo and appear in person at several promotional events along with Miss Rodeo Australia. Miss Rodeo America was Sandy Kay Meyer from Wyoming

Miss Rodeo America 1984, Sandy Kay Meyer

and Miss Rodeo Canada was Susan Hargrave from Medicine Hat and what lovely young ladies they were. As things panned out, the girls were being hosted for a couple of nights on a farm outside Warwick and it just happened some bucking horses contracted to the Finals by Rick Wilson were also to be yarded at the same place. We took two cars out and if I remember rightly, both the international rodeo queens were in the car I was driving when we came along behind the bogged truck, full of broncs and going nowhere. Several of us discussed the situation and it was eventually decided to jump the broncs off – the back wheels were in the bog and so the rear of the truck was fairly close to the ground. Now the road to the yards was straight ahead but had one side road so off I went with one of the girls, I can’t remember which one, to block the side road while the rest of the team went a little way back up the road to turn the broncs if they ran back the wrong way. The situation was a little tense, who knows what broncs will decide to do in a situation like this and if they ran past us, the area opened up into a maze of roads, cattle properties and a State Forrest – heaven forbid if they went in there, we’d have been short eight or 10 broncs for the rodeo. Can you imagine these lovely young ladies, in Australia for less than 24 hours, mud spatted over their ‘million dollar’ clothes, waving, shouting, jumping up and down on a bush road in the middle of nowhere in a country they’d never heard of until a few weeks before arriving? As it turned out, the broncs behaved well enough, they turned back once off the truck and although a few turned into the side road they quickly turned around when they saw us and headed into the yards a further two km along the road. The whole episode made for a good laugh well into the night but those two girls took home a tale no-one would ever believe was true unless you were there.

A chance phone call from an old neighbor with a friendly offer in late 2018 catapulted Chantel Huddy into what can only be described as a barrel racer’s fairytale season. Joy and Andrew Byrnes originally lived up the road from Chantel, they’d moved to Toowoomba and had left a few horses at their old property. “They said to me, Mick is just sitting there, do you want to run him for a season and have some fun. I knew that he was a good horse and that he was competitive, but I’d only ever really seen him with Jack (Joy and Andrew’s son) in the juniors. At that point I was bringing along young horses and I thought bugger it, why not, I’ll give him a crack.” The Roma based mum of two only entered a handful of rodeos across Queensland throughout 2019 but dominated everywhere Photo Credit Framed Forever Fotos she went. Wins at Mitchell, Roma, Emerald, the mighty Mount Isa, St Brendan’s and Comet set the quiet and unassuming cowgirl up for a stellar season ending. Unsurprisingly, Chantel carried her winning ways into the national finals. She added the NFR Average Champion buckle to a Pro Tour title whilst on her way to the 2019 Australian Barrel Racing Title. “It’s still unbelievable to me. I can’t hold much credit for my success because Mick has been so good, but I know he didn’t do it on his own.” The little chestnut gelding by Dually Cool is a perfect fit for Chantel. “I find him very easy to ride, he suits me to a tee. I’m not one for making big movements.” The duo seems effortless during a run, with their quiet style that doesn’t look overly fast in the moment to the naked eye. Although they may not look to be going fast, Chantel says that’s not how he feels in the saddle. “Oh god he feels fast!” Although Mick’s speed is obviously a positive factor, Chantel says it’s his big heart that sets him apart. “That horse has never taken a backward step for me. You feel his heart start pounding but he’s always going forward, like he wants to get in there and do it. He loves his job and that’s what he wants to do.” For all their wins this year, a huge win in her old hometown is the most memorable. Born and raised in Mount Isa, Chantel started off in pony club, where she got a taste for the speed events. “Dad started carting us to rodeos and gymkhanas and it went from there.” Ironically it was here in front of family and friends, where Chantel started to see her years of perseverance put her on center stage. “Up until then we were kind of flying under the radar. I’ve been in the background for a long time just chugging away, trying to find the right horse.”

From her parents in Mount Isa to her fiancée Wayde, Chantel admits nothing would have been possible without their help. “You need a good support crew and my little family has been with me everywhere this year.” But most importantly, the generosity of the Byrnes family is not lost on the champion cowgirl. “I wouldn’t be here without them. I’m just so grateful.”

Hi everyone! The 2019 APRA National Finals Rodeo is in the books and boy was it a big one!! This experience was one I will never forget! From showing off some of our country to the beautiful Miss Rodeo America, Taylor McNair and Miss Rodeo Canada, Jayden Holle, to watching our best Cowboys and Cowgirls battle it out for the top prize, it was non-stop fun from start to finish. It takes incredible effort to organise events like the Australian Professional Rodeo Association - APRA National Finals Rodeo and the Warwick Show and Rodeo Society Inc Rodeo and Gold Cup Campdraft. I would like to congratulate and thank each committee for dedicating themselves to such an event. To the sponsors who get behind our events, thank you. Our Rodeos would not be possible without your backing of our committees and competitors. To the cattle donors and stock contractors who supplied superb stock for this event in this horrible drought, we salute you and your determination to keep fighting and your faith that it will rain again and this drought will end. To the every single competitor on the Pro Tour circuit, whether you made it to the finals or not, those who put everything they have into being the best they can be, in and out of the arena, congratulations on another fantastic year and good luck for the 2020 season! Remember that hard work will always reap rewards (even when things don’t always go to plan) To the spectators, who come to watch and enjoy the talent of our competitors, thank you for supporting our sport.

JUDGES

CAMPING

Should you take a judging position at a rodeo you intend to compete at a replacement judge must be employed for that particular event in its entirety and our Head Office must be notified of this official no later than 2 weeks prior to the rodeo. Judges who officiate an event they compete in will be disqualified and fined.

When camping at rodeo grounds please respect the privilege to do so. Leave your area clean and tidy and free of rubbish. The last thing hard working committees should have to do is clean up messes left by the minority. Let’s keep the grounds clean so everyone can continue to camp for years to come.

- ME R R Y CH RI S T M AS FROM THE APRA BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND OFFICE STAFF. Best wishes during the festive season and good luck to those competing over the Christmas Run! 24 |

WE NEED YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS ON FILE! Please phone or email in your current email address for our files. We need these for emailing receipts, invoices, statements and announcements.

PAYING LEVIES AT RODEOS Paying the levy portion of an entry fee at a rodeo is not allowed. If a competitor is unable to compete they can have someone pay their FULL entry fee for them to avoid a turnout fee. Only exception is if on the day, a judge agrees to a visual turnout due to injury. The contestant will then only be liable for the APRA and committee levies plus GST if applicable.

FILMING BEHIND CHUTES Due to the possibility of injury, no person is permitted to stand on the back of the chutes and film. Anyone not directly involved in the Rodeo is not permitted behind the chutes. This will be enforced by the Judges, Chute Bosses and Directors, we have to enforce this to meet our insurance and legal liabilities for current day legislation.

23RD DECEMBER 2019 31ST DECEMBER 2019

GROUND RULES Competitors, a reminder that it is extremely important to follow all ground rules set by the committee at a rodeo. They are set for various reasons ie: hiring of grounds, liquor licensing, insurance etc. so please adhere to them and help the committee run again for years to come!
