2019 AUSTRALIAN RODEO HERITAGE CENTRE

HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES Rusty Frame Rusty was the son of Angus Frame, Angus was the Saddle Bronc riding champion in 1948. The Frame family was a great rodeo family in Queensland in the early years of the APRA. Rusty competed in his early years but went on to become one of our great comedy clowns for the APRA.

Fred Hausler Fred is an honorary inductee this year, not a competitor himself. He was on hand to help most committees in the early years, mainly the south Australian rodeos. He was one of the first rodeo announcers in the early years of the APRA.

Johnny Pierce His rodeo career started in the early years of the APRA. Riding in the travelling buckjump shows. He was the Australian Bareback Bronc Riding Champion 1947 and the All Around Champion in 1946. His son Jim rodeod in the APRA, and his grandson Brad is still an active member of the APRA.

Dally and Nora Holden Dally rode in the late 1940’s and into the 1950’s. He was Saddle Bronc Riding Champion in 1949 and 1950, Bull Riding champion in 1953, Bareback Bronc Riding champion in 1955 and Steer Wrestling Champion in 1951. He rode in the travelling Buckjump shows before he started his rodeo career. Nora Holden (nee) Vickers was an Australian Ladies Bronc Riding Champion in the early 1950s. Together they formed and ran the H5U Rodeo in Townsville for many years. H5U Rodeo was one of the best rodeos on the APRA circuit.

Myrtleford Rodeo Committee Myrtleford Committee have run an APRA affiliated rodeo since 1953 known as the Golden Spurs Rodeo. The rodeo and committee have been inducted to the Australian Rodeo Heritage Centre Hall of Fame this year.

Caveat closed the Office The 1981 World Cup Rodeo was to be a highlight of not only Australian but world rodeo, designed to start a process of crowning ‘real’ world champions. This followed two successful World Titles Rodeos at Kooralbyn, Qld, in 1979 and another in Sydney a year later.

It was in December and the first leg of World Cup Rodeo (WCR) started in Melbourne. As it turned out, the second (Sydney) leg of WCR never started, prizemoney went missing, entry fees disappeared and all sorts of ramifications led to broke cowboys and a great deal of angst among all parts of the rodeo world.

WITH JOHN SKINNER

Rodeo Rambling

The American PRCA of course crowns World Champions each year and every rodeo cowboy is invited to make an attempt to win the crown and we here in Australia accept the challenge.

It was in the aftermath of WCR, on May 1, 1982, I walked into the office of the then Australian Rough Riders Association (ARRA) office in Warwick, to become what was termed the General Secretary of the association. I had been called by Reg (RM) Williams only four weeks before and asked would I take the job. It seemed I walked into a maelstrom of ‘left-over’ problems from WCR, not least of all was an account from Sydney businessman John Singleton for $18,000 (plus interest) for advertising a twoday ‘jackpot’ rodeo held for all the entrants in Sydney the weekend after the Melbourne leg of the World Cup. Under the rules of the ARRA, we were not allowed to affiliate a ‘jackpot’ rodeo but at the time, no-one seemed to care, it was a rodeo run to try and recoup some of the expenses lost in Melbourne. A similar rodeo had been held in Canberra after the Melbourne leg and it too, was a successful promotion. Back to the $18,000 account from John Singleton. I believe the then Association president, Jim Bailey, had arranged the sponsorship package and the Singleton organisation was to donate the cost as a way of promoting the event but apparently, Mr Singleton had other ideas. There’s a warning here; always have your contracts in writing.

John Singleton

Jim Bailey at Kooralbyn, 1976.

As the monthly accounts arrived at our office, I forwarded them to RM, Association treasurer at the time. RM was a hard-nosed businessman, make no bones about it, and he refused to pay the account, let alone the interest which had grown to $7,000. In the office, work was proceeding as normal when, one day in September, two police officers walked into the office and issued us with a caveat which meant the Association had to cease business then and there.

RM Williams

Office assistant Roslyn Mangan (now Flood) and I were ushered out of the office, our keys were confiscated and the office was locked behind us. I sent Roz home for the day while I drove around the block and came back into the office via the back door using a key the officers knew nothing about. Funny as it may seem now, I had to hide behind the counter to make phone calls to Jim Bailey and RM, lest I be seen through the glass door. I then travelled to Hodgsonvale near Toowoomba to see RM. RM rang John Singleton while I was there and the conversation does not bear repeating, suffice to say I think any semblance of friendship between the two ended then and there. The account, less interest, was paid immediately and the following morning, the caveat was withdrawn and business returned to normal. Just one day in the life of the ARRA office – but this day wasn’t the only one to remember.

Kate Taylor

‘ M I S S RO D E O AU ST R A LI A’ From a childhood in the Hunter Valley to her life in the ruggedness that is rural Queensland, Kate

Taylor lives the life that rodeo embodies. Our sport has been built off the backs of rural and regional communities and this is not lost on Kate. She’s made her home in one of these very communities, Cloncurry, and through the rodeo committee has found her niche in the sport. The 2019 Miss Rodeo Australia grew up a country kid in Scone NSW and continues to love every bit of the lifestyle offered by outback Australia. “I love it” she says of her adopted hometown. “It’s one of those towns where you just instantly feel at home. I’ve been here for nearly five years now.” Having grown up watching polo from the sidelines as a kid, Kate always had an interest in horses. “It wasn’t until I was 16 that I actually started riding seriously and getting right into horses.” The love of the land and horses was burning strong after she completed her schooling, so she packed her bags and left the comfort of home for the stock camps of north west Queensland. “I was a station hand for 5 years, working in different stock camps all over Queensland, from Cloncurry to the channel country.” She initially dipped her toes in the campdrafting waters but “when I moved back into Cloncurry cattle weren’t an option.” With no means of practicing her campdrafting Kate thought “I’ll give this barrel racing a crack.” That led her to join the Cloncurry Merry Muster Rodeo committee and she fell in love with the sport. “I just love the family feel that you get at a rodeo. It’s something for the tiny tacker to the good old cowboy of yesteryear. I’ve never been involved in any other sport that has that feel.” Through her role as the Cloncurry Rodeo Queen in 2016/17 Kate realised her potential as an ambassador for rodeo. “I absolutely love to interact, communicating with the public, mingling with the sponsors and the crowd and making everyone feel special. It’s so much fun.” As for the glamourous side of being a rodeo queen, Kate admits she surprised herself. “I wasn’t ever really a girly girl, but rodeo queening has brought that out in me.” Describing her style as classic and heavily influenced by those who’ve paved the way before her, she embraces the style of the 60’s cowgirls. “It’s about dressing like a lady, but you’re a cowgirl. I like the old school look. Just gorgeous, quality lines and classic cuts.” The idea of tying her appearance to the heritage of rodeo speaks to Kate. “That’s what rodeo is about, it’s about history. What you wear is a representation of yourself and your role.” Kate’s crowning as Miss Rodeo Australia came “as a huge shock, but it’s going to be a lot of fun.” One of her first appearance will come at her hometown rodeo, Cloncurry Merry Muster, but she admits to being very excited about the chance to attend the APRA National Finals at Warwick later in the year. “I really do love Warwick. You’ve got the best of the best there. It’s a huge commitment to rodeo and to qualify for the finals. It’s really nice to see everyone’s hard work paying off for those few days.”

That’s a wrap!! It’s now time I say goodbye to you all as your 2018 Miss Rodeo Australia. As I sit here I find myself lost for words, so I take a moment to look back on the photos from my year and rewatch the footage of myself as the first Miss Rodeo Australia on stage at the Coronation/Crowning of the new Miss Rodeo America in Las Vegas. In doing this I am overcome with emotion!! It isn’t until your time is up that you realise that the Title of Miss Rodeo Australia will leave you with a series of incredible moments, ones that you will forever relive when you look back on this once in a lifetime opportunity. When taking on this role you know that you have the opportunity to impact others around you, the platform to spread the love for our amazing sport, to help communities with the promotion of their events, encourage others to do same and the chance to inspire them to keep chasing their dreams. But what you don’t know is what you will receive in return.  During my time not only have I made some great memories but I have made some wonderful friends in Darwin, Carrieton and as far away as America and Canada.  The committees I have had the pleasure of spending time with in the lead up to and during their events will forever hold a special part in my heart, for the kindness and generosity they have shown me. I have also come away from this experience with more confidence, better public speaking skills, hair, make-up and etiquette skills, social media know how and a broader understanding of Rodeo and what our communities go through to present us with their events. The self-development and knowledge gained during this experience is invaluable. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for supporting me throughout this journey.  I would like to extend a special thank you to the Australian Professional Rodeo Association and the Miss Rodeo Australia committee for offering this Title to women like myself and for their ongoing support throughout my time. I cannot thank my sponsors enough, without you this would be a tough road and I hope you all know how much your generosity means to myself and all of our Miss Rodeo Australia’s. Last but not least I would like to thank my family and friends who supported me back in 2016 when I decided to try my luck for the Warwick Rodeo Queen title, oh how far we have come!! If it wasn’t for your support, encouraging words and gentle push here and there I would never had made it to where I am today. I wish all the best to the future Miss Rodeo Australia. Hang onto your hat Cowgirl this is going to be the ride of your lifetime.

Lots of Love,

PLEASE ADVISE APPROVED PERSONNEL Committees, Contractors and Promotors are reminded that they must inform Head Office of which approved officials will be officiating at their event 2 weeks prior. This is so the office can have them covered under our insurance policy should something unforeseen occur. It is also the responsibility of the above to inform the office of any changes to the officials prior to the rodeo commencing.

LISTEN TO YOUR CALLBACKS! It is very important that when you phone central entries to make an entry or cancel out you listen very carefully to what is read back to you to ensure details have been taken correctly and write down your call back number. If you have not been entered or cancelled out and you phone us saying you have we cannot do anything about it unless you have a legitimate call back number.

JUDGES Should you take a judging position at a rodeo you intend to compete at a replacement judge must be employed for that particular event in its entirety and our Head Office must be notified of this official no later than 2 weeks prior to the rodeo. Judges who officiate an event they compete in will be disqualified and fined.

DIRECT DEPOSITING MONEY INTO OUR BANK ACCOUNT There are an alarming number of people depositing money into our bank account without notifying us. Please fax or email us the receipt with your name, the amount and what the payment is for. This saves any confusion and ensures the funds are applied to your account. Please ensure your name and membership number is in the description when making the transaction. We do not accept any responsibility if you have transferred money in and not informed us and you have been pulled out of a draw for not making the payment on time.

PAYING LEVIES AT RODEOS Paying the levy portion of an entry fee at a rodeo is not allowed. If a competitor is unable to compete they June have someone pay their FULL entry fee for them to avoid a turnout fee.
