Dear Friends, Thanks to the enthusiastic participation of thousands of Austinites, Austin Opera’s 2018-2019 Season was one for the record books – marked by new levels of artistic excellence, the launch of Opera ATX, record-breaking ticket sales and fundraising, new community partnerships, and a significant expansion in the reach of our education programs. We opened the season with Verdi’s Otello featuring powerhouse voices and the outstanding Austin Opera Orchestra; continued with the Pulitzer Prize-winning and Austin Critics Table Award-winning opera Silent Night; launched our Opera ATX series with the multi-media contemporary work Soldier Songs at the iconic Paramount Theatre; and closed the season with opera’s timeless love story, La bohème. Our varied and exciting programming resulted in record ticket sales – with La bohème breaking every record for the past five years and three of our four operas – Otello, Silent Night, and Solider Songs – recognized as a “top five operatic experience in North America” on their opening weekend by OperaWire. We announced our new partnership with the Butler School of Music at The University of Texas in co-producing the Butler Opera International Competition, and we doubled down on our efforts to connect with the community through production-specific collaborations with organizations like the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM), Austin Shakespeare, and the Texas Military Forces Museum at Camp Mabry, to name just a few. Our education programs reached new heights with record-level participation, and we created the Austin Opera Educator of the Year Award in recognition of the dedicated teachers who partner with us in closing the equity gap in arts education in schools. Thanks to the generosity of our donor family, contributed income increased 15% over the the year before, resulting in the highest levels of annual fund support in company history. We received our third national, six-figure innovation grant in two years, and thanks to Ernest and Sarah Butler, in particular, our endowment has increased more than 75% over the past two years. As we proudly look back on these achievements, I thank you for making it all possible. I look forward to seeing what we will accomplish together next! With gratitude, Annie Burridge General Director & CEO Photos in this annual report are by Erich Schlegel, Austin Opera’s official production photographer, unless otherwise stated. Erich is a Pulitzer Prizenominated photographer and has taken official photos for both the Summer & Winter Olympics. Erich has been photographing Austin Opera productions since 2016.

Thank you! The 2018-2019 Season was possible because of the generosity of our donors. Members of our Leadership Giving, Patron, and Partner Programs, together with our institutional funders, donated $2.2 million to Austin Opera, an increase of 15% over last year. Austin Opera is eternally grateful to our supporters for their passion, enthusiasm, and support of this wondrous art form. Bravi tutti!

The 2019 Serenata Wine Dinner & Auction, hosted by the Austin Opera Guild, raised over $200,000 for the company’s productions and education programs and honored dear friends and Austin philanthropists Mary Ann and Andrew Heller. Austin Opera thanks Serenata Co-Chairs Suzanne Breitbach, Michael Garza, and Roger Kahlbau for their incredible efforts in making the event a huge success!

This season, Austin Opera was recognized for our work in innovation by two national funders – we were the fortunate recipients of an Arts Innovation and Management grant by Bloomberg Philanthropies, the largest grant in company history, and were awarded a second OPERA America Innovation grant.

Making a difference!

This season, Austin Opera was proud to partner with Austin Shakespeare, the Texas Military Forces Museum at Camp Mabry, Alamo Drafthouse, Local Opera Local Artists (LOLA), One Ounce Opera, Armstrong Community Music School, Veterans Guitar Project, and the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM). Austin Opera’s education programs, Opera Treasure Chest and Access Opera, served 11,400 children across Central Texas providing in-school arts programming and visits to the Long Center to see a live opera performance!
