Fall is Fun!

October 2013

From The Desk Of

Pam Kinne

PTG – it’s more than a meeting I was so glad to see so many of you at open house a few weeks ago. It can be difficult to free up time in the evenings to come so I appreciate those of you that were able to make it. For those of you whose life just wasn’t able to squeeze in one more thing, I’d like to share with you some of the ways that you can contribute to our school as a parent. Have a role in the decisions: PTG meetings are held once a month on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 6:00. During these meetings decisions are made as to what functions will be held at the school and when or if it’s even possible. Examples of these functions include popcorn day, Trunk or Treat, fundraising, and the spring egg hunt. It is during these meetings that upcoming functions are discussed and voted on to determine if there is enough parental support to have them run successfully for the kids. Carve out some time: Fun things for kids usually require behind the scenes prep. Many hands make light work. Some of the work is pretty light to begin with such as counting bags of candy and making stamp marks on paper, putting candy into grocery bags, running a popcorn popper, throwing candy and prizes into the grass, and bundling Box Tops for the library fundraiser. Sometimes there’s hard work too, such as installing playground equipment, but it’s all for the kids. Be a resource: We have a Family Learning Fair in February. Do you have a hobby or work for or own a company that can put up a table to teach the kids about something? If you do, give the school a call and leave a message for the PTG with your contact information. Be an extra hand: If you can use a pair of scissors, I bet your child’s teacher can find something for you to help with. By helping your child’s teacher with some of the prep work, you are allowing them to focus more on instruction. Be an ally: The benefit of teachers and parents working together is enormous for your child. We want what is best for your child’s education and safety as do you – it’s what we have in common. The school really relies on parents to support the work the school is doing. The parents rely on the school educating their child and keeping them safe. By working together, those goals can be accomplished. See you in the halls,

Reading With Little Ones Here are a few tips on helping to grow strong reading skills with your younger students. Developing a routine with your younger child can help to improve reading skills. Routines can soothe a child, and will help children learn to predict what will happen next. The ability to predict is important when your child is older and is reading independently. Reading favorite stories and singing favorite songs over and over again will strengthen language development and create positive feelings about reading. Pay attention to how your child reacts to the book you are reading. Stop if your child isn't enjoying the story and try another book. Encourage your child to express their opinion of the story in order to help them determine the types of books they prefer to read in the future. Please feel free to contact at me 586-7577 for further reading suggestions. Mrs. Locker

Book Fair has come and gone. I really appreciate all of you who braved the crowd during Open House. Your support of the book fair helps stretch our library budget. I would especially like to thank all those who helped out at book fair during open house. I would like to thank the parents who helped out. The kids always want to know what I do with the money. The truth is that I collect it for the company sponsoring the book fair, but I do get free books for the library in return. This year, the library earned over $1,000 in books from the Book Fair. I will be adding these books to the library as I have time. The online book fair is a new part of the book fair. This is the first time it has been part of the regular fair. I should be receiving your orders shortly and will get them to your children. If there are Christmas gifts or other presents as part of your order, please let me know so I can make sure the kids won’t be able to get into the packages. You can call the school and leave me a message or email me at Thank you so much for your support of the library. If you have any questions about our library, please call me at Finley Elementary School. I may be with a class and can’t take your call, but I will call you back as soon as I am able. The school number is 586-7577. You may also email me at
