“Can I add batteries to my existing solar system and run my house off the grid?” “It depends...” Most grid connected inverters are string inverters, with DC voltages from around 150V – 600V. Battery banks at those voltages are not readily available. (48V is the standard Max. for Residential SPS)

Before you begin Things to consider before you sell/install BBU systems

• Get written approval from local energy authority • Get written approval from clients energy retailer • Does your installer have SPS experience/certs? • Are customers expectations realistic? (kWh/day?) • Have customer sign a performance agreement. • Double check that your system sizing is correct • Check that all your components are compliant

The PV Edge 1200 Can be set into battery mode and will take only what it needs from the battery bank to export power to the electrical grid.

If the grid goes down causing a black out, this inverter will shut itself off and stop exporting to the grid.

Highly versatile 48VDC Parallel (not string) type Grid Connect Inverter Many 1000’s in Australia. Can also work with our TC-48 wind or micro-hydro turbine controller to export turbine power to the grid.

Can be wired in parallel with other PV Edge’s to increase system size and output.

Who can install a BBU? Only qualified Stand Alone Designers and Installers can install BBU systems and it must comply with AS4509 and AS5033 , AS3000, etc,. A Registered Professional Engineer (RPEQ) certification of the design and installation may often be required to ensure that all safety issues have been adequately addressed. According to the CEC “Find an Installer� website there are only 496 SPS accredited installers in Australia, with the majority of these split across Queensland and Victoria. For battery back up to become wide spread more SPS/RAPS training courses are required.


General Info • Panels are wired in paired strings • Panels with Voc around 44V are ideal (ie.190W) • Array open circuit voltage 75Voc – 92Voc • PV Edge must be switched into “Battery Mode” • Battery specs must be able to handle charge rate • You may want to size MPPT for future expansion • B.Bank is AS4509.2, AS2676 & AS3011 compliant • CEC BBU labels should be placed where needed


Considerations The Designer/Installer should supply the following documentation: That the installation complies with all technical requirements agreed too with the energy authority. Whether the batteries are being used for Back Up, Peak Shifting or both. That batteries within the system cannot supply energy from the SPS inverter to AC loads that are connected directly to the grid when the grid is live. Whether the backup inverter is or isn’t synchronised to the mains. Written proof that the system was given full approval by the energy authority before installation. A clearly labeled and detailed wiring diagram of that particular BBU system.
