T MOST RESTAURANTS THESE DAYS, what you see isn’t always what you get. At Truluck’s, a luxury restaurant known around the United States for its fresh and sustainable seafood and beef, it only gets better. The restaurant of choice to senior executives in southern Florida, Texas and La Jolla, California, Truluck’s offers undeniably unique seafood packed inside a restaurant that epitomizes stately luxury. Location might have something to do with it, but after just three years the La Jolla restaurant has made waves on the west coast. Perhaps that is because hardly anyone in this oceanfront city can boast ownership of a sustainable and natural fishery like Truluck’s. Truluck’s radiates superiority in everything from its classy live pianist singing familiar tunes to dishes that supply a comfortable elegance (parmesan mashed potatoes, crab cakes and carrot cake come to mind).

The crab part is easy – experts snap quickly to make sucking delectable crab legs a cinch, and hot towels are seconds away following that minimal shucking. The first west coast establishment, Truluck’s in La Jolla is what the team calls a “destination location.” Oddly enough, the place isn’t located on the water – but it doesn’t need to be. The décor takes a cue from old Chicago chophouses where a trendy impression is set to the past. Instead, visitors from all 11 locations January 2012

The La Jolla is a tribute itself to the longevity of the Truluck’s brand – nearly twenty years as a recognized establishment on the east coast, Truluck’s moved the company in a down economy to an unsuspecting venue. Certainly there were risks involved, but with the sheer possibility of failure came the overwhelming principle that Truluck’s would discover new entrees to plate, and new faithful patrons to feed. Step inside the joint, order up a signature cocktail or appetizer, and you’ll know what we’re talking about. “Truluck’s is the best example of a successful concept restaurant. The La Jolla location is incredible in all aspects – friendly staff, a great bar, awesome food and a good management to boot. OW HAS APPLE MANAGED TO stay so successful over 35 years? Even with its misses (Motorola ROKR, anyone? Oh, the humanity...), no one can dispute that the company is the dominant American corporate brand, period. The hard numbers even prove this, with Apple’s market capitalization recently surpassing Exxon-Mobile, making it the most valuable company in the world. Of course, the news always breathlessly captures Apple’s characteristics: Legendary CEO. Masterful marketing. Amazing stagecraft. Sexy products. Industry renegades. Tradition breakers. Cult-like devotion. With so many positive elements involved, how can we summarize the formula to Apple’s brand success? We all know the saying: If you love someone, set them free. We’d argue that’s sort of what Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, has done, over and over again. You can’t separate Jobs and Apple, they are one and the same, the brand made the man,

NOTE: When we first published this article, it went online only a few hours before the very sad news of Steve Jobs’ passing. Because of that timing, some of the content may read a bit blind to that unfortunate reality. However, we choose to leave the article intact, knowing that even after Wednesday, October 5, all the points still confirm Jobs’ legacy – that Apple’s brand success is largely due to the brilliance of this generation’s greatest and most visionary industrialist. We hope the article serves as a fitting tribute to Jobs’ genius.

After building Apple’s initial success, Jobs was fired by the company’s board over creative and business differences. Instead of trying to win back his lost love, Jobs walked away and founded two new companies, NeXT and Pixar. The former gave us today’s Macintosh operating system and the first iterations of a capable web browser; the latter continues to produce some of the best-loved animated films ever. These experiences – and their ramifications – continue to Woody, the Pixar animated character

Once Tim Cook, the new Apple CEO again, Jobs just walked away from the critics and pushed Apple to keep churning out products. No really, he just walks away! With well-known reports of his bouts with cancer and a liver transplant, Jobs’ health has been a big deal for the past several years. Jobs finally relinquished control of Apple in August, leaving the day-to-day operations of the company and placing a new CEO in charge. Only in the last few years have dapper Indian restaurants started popping up in New York. And although it is most definitely the pioneering days of curry in the US, New York just had to deliver in style. Devi is America’s only Michelin star Indian restaurant, and accordingly worth a visit. Chef’s Suvir Saran and Hemant Mathur are sure to whip your taste buds into a frenzy with traditional Indian home cooking fused with the bold flavours of the new world. I’m salivating just musing over fond memories of the grilled scallops with roasted pepper chutney and bitter orange marmalade, and the signature Tandoori lamb chops with pear chutney. importantly, awardwinning chefs Vivek Singh and Abdul Yaseen on-hand, you’re really in for a spectacular night. The menu is short; instead, it focuses on a select few dishes that they get right every single time. Although the meals are presented in an aptly contemporary fashion, with subtle hints of fusion, the food is truly Indian at heart. To start, I’d recommend the Fat Chillies with Spiced Paneer or Hyderabadi Lamb Mince. As an entree, try Scottish Angus Fillet with Masala Chips or Seared Sea Bass with Kokum Curry and Rice (kokum is slightly sour, although less so than tamarind). Try something suitably rustic, and typically Punjabi, such as Baingan Ka Bharta (spicy barbecued eggplant), Dahl Makhini (lentils slow cooked overnight, until rich and silky), and accompany this with flaky Tandoori Rotis and some of the more familiar suspects such as meat kebabs and balti curry dishes - and you will be eating just as heartily as any Punjabi farmer. METHOD

In a food processor, blend together the blueberries, chopped cilantro, ginger, salt and yogurt to make a purée. Set aside. Place the garlic in a deep saucepan with the olive oil and cook over a low-medium heat until the garlic starts to turn a brown colour – this should take no longer than 1–2 minutes. Add the turmeric, mix well and cook for about 20 seconds. Stir in the ground cinnamon and chilli and cook for a further 20 seconds. Add the chicken meat, and mix well, cook until the chicken is sealed all over – stirring all the time. Now slowly pour in the yogurt mixture, mixing it into the chicken, and then bring to a simmer over a low heat. Simmer, uncovered, for 10 minutes, stirring from time to time. Mix through the garam masala. Garnish with the extra chopped cilantro and serve with Goji Berry and Green Pea Pilau. Visit us online at www.execdigital.com

PAPPY VAN WINKLE’S FAMILY RESERVE 15 YEARS. 53.5% ABV (107 PROOF) PRICE: $70 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The Pappy Van Winkle Family is one of my favorites because they offer such a wide variety of products – from bourbon whiskey to an excellent rye whiskey, as well as three other products in the upper echelons of aging, their maturity hasn’t limited their output. The Van Winkle family has been in the bourbon business for four generations, but standouts for me include the 10 and 12 year aged offerings (while the 20 year was rated number one bourbon whiskey in the world at World’s Spirits Championships). They are extremely exclusive and only release their full line of products twice a year - once in the fall and another in the spring. Blanton’s is the bourbon of choice for those who are not bourbon drinkers, as it is sweeter and softer than others. Blanton’s was created by Master Distiller Emeritus, Elmer T. Lee. This is actually the first single barrel bourbon ever made so not only did he create a wonderful bourbon, but he also started a new category of single barrel in which the Master Distiller selects one barrel and then ladles it by hand, bottle by bottle. WOODFORD RESERVE MAPLE WOOD FINISH 47.2% ABV. 4+ YEARS PRICE: $35 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Woodford Reserve is one of the fastest growing spirits. It is extremely smooth, blends really well and is also great by itself. My new favorite product from Woodford is the special Woodford Reserve Maple Wood Finish. This product is unique in that it is the first time anyone has been able to use sugar maple wood for staves on a barrel. At the maple wood cooperage, they strip down the sugar maple wood and toast it, sealing in the sweetness of the sap. True to form, Woodford Reserve is aged in new charred American White Oak Barrels and then finished for months in the maple wood barrels, giving it a spicy yet sweet and nutty flavor. www.woodfordreserve.com

RIAN CURLEY OF SCHMIDT-CURLEY turned his attention to Chinese golf course design years ago, before it was the place for innovative design. Upon first arrival, the renowned designer was aware that golf had yet to seep into the Chinese culture like it had in America – but with the addition of a few quality courses, golf has become a pastime akin to their American counterpart for businessmen and residential spectators alike. “I am proud to have been associated with so much of China’s golf movement and its future. MISSION HILLS RESORT HAIKOU - BLACKSTONE COURSE

As part of Curley’s partnership with Mission Hills in southern China, the designer was asked to tackle Mission Hills Resort Haikou all on his own. and particularly his use of the local landscape. “The lava rock base has been incorporated as an integral element of the design by weaving irregular lines of turf and rock, eliminating the typical hard line edge of most courses,” says Curley. “Adding to the look are wild, irregular bunker edges and transitional sand edges that effortlessly work into native lava rock.” Amassing 7808 yards with a par-73, Blackstone’s showcase will be the home to this year’s Omega Mission Hills World Cup. STONE FOREST INTERNATIONAL COUNTRY CLUB - LEADERS PEAK COURSE

Named one of GOLF Magazine’s top seven courses for the 2013 season, Stone Forest International Country Club’s Leaders Peak in Kunming, Yunnan, China is Brian Curley’s own interpretation of classic Gary Player. Hailing the course as one of the world’s most original designs ever, the Stone Forest International Country Club itself actually consists of three courses Visit us online at www.execdigital.com

Alongside Leaders Peak, Curley also worked on Masters Resort and Yufeng Ridge, where the 270 million-year-old karst peaks overlook each green. The world’s most famous island green at T.P.C. Sawgrass has got nothing on Leaders Peak – its par-3 12th hole isn’t surrounded by water but stone, and is five times the size of T.P.C. Sawgrass’ 17th. “Although January 2012

Brian Curley’s appreciation for golf Leaders Peak Course course design started at Hole #13 a young age, but growing up in Pebble Beach, California, that’s hardly surprising. “I was raised in Pebble Beach and spent my early days playing the courses on the famous Monterey Peninsula,” says Curley. “These experiences gave me a great appreciation for the importance of variety and classic ‘Golden Age’ architecture.” January 2012

It might not be the newest tower on the Las Vegas Strip, but it wasn’t too long ago that Mandalay Bay’s latest tower was the talk of the town. Luckily for guests who are up for an adventure, THEhotel still has the shine of a new kid on the block but with the attitude of a veteran. THESuite at THEhotel takes a similar shape to the rest of the resort’s flare with sleek lines, tiled entrances and advanced technology. While technologicially standard for a more modern hotel, its 725 square feet of living space and one and a half baths, Mandalay Bay’s motif makes up for that. January 2012

James Bond would be proud to call The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas home. This place is so upscale, so classy, that it’s like you’ve stepped back in time. With inter-connectivity technology, a private patio terrace with Jacuzzi, second story with kitchen, open master bedroom and projection television, the Lanai Suite screams like a “shaken martini.” With tiled flooring, modern décor and direct access to the exclusive Bamboo Pool, escaping from reality is expected.
