Dear Campus Residents, We are well into the fall semester and I know you are looking forward to Thanksgiving and Winter Breaks! I am hopeful that your mid-semester exams and papers went well. This is our e-update to all campus residents with the goal of keeping you well connected to what's happening in Housing & Dining Programs. I invite you to read these updates with interest as they could be very beneficial to you. This newsletter will cover several very important topics including Housing during Thanksgiving Break and the seasonal heat switchover. Monday, January 13 First day of Spring 2013 classes Tuesday, January 28 Spring meal plan change requests/cancellations due Wednesday, May 7 Residence Halls close at 12 noon for move-out for undergraduates
Winter Break Housing Applications Winter Break Housing is available for current residents on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications will only be considered from 12 noon, Wednesday, December 18, 2013, through 12 noon, Sunday, January 5, 2014. Applications are being accepted on a roll. There is a one week minimum stay and a daily charge of $45.00 per person per night for this service.
HOUSING & DINING PROGRAMS Campus Housing During Thanksgiving Break The residence halls will remain open over the Thanksgiving Break period, but many of the hall desks will be closed. South Campus residents should use the Anderson/ Centennial Desk (x7700), North Campus residents should use the McDowell Desk (x7706), and Nebraska residents should use the Nebraska Desk for any questions, needs or services as well as for access to your residence hall room. Desk operations in all halls will resume on December 1st at 12pm.
Residence Halls Close for Winter Break The residence halls will close for Winter Break on December 18 at 12 noon for all residents who have not been approved for Winter Break housing. While the residence halls open for the Spring Semester on January 5 at 3pm, the majority of our student population moves back in the weekend of January 11-12.
Seasonal Heating Switchover
Fall to Spring Room Change Process If you are interested in changing rooms for the spring semester, or are looking to fill a vacancy in your room with another resident, you can participate in the Fall to Spring Room change process. The Room Change Request Form for spring semester housing will be accepted on Tuesday, November 12th and Wednesday November 13th from 10am - 4pm in McDowell formal lounge in McDowell Hall. Please review the process and complete the Fall to Spring room change application located on the Housing and Dining homepage (american.edu/ocl/housing).
Spring 2014 Housing Cancellations Residents not intending to return to campus housing for the Spring 2014 semester must complete the Housing License Agreement and Meal Plan Release Petition (available online) and return it to the H&DP office, or email it, prior to November 1, 2013 at 4:59pm (EST). Current Fall 2013 residents who are released from housing will be charged a $500 termination fee with increases after the cancellation deadline. Students participating in a University approved study abroad program must cancel their spring housing by the deadline to have the fee waived.
The seasonal switchover from cooling to heating will occur on Monday, October 28th. Facilities Management staff monitors the local weather forecast and if the average daily temperature (including highs and lows) is below 55 degrees and falling for more than 7 consecutive days, plans are made to switch buildings over to heating. The residence hall air handling system is centralized for each residence hall. Therefore, the entire hall must be switched over from hot to cold air at one time.
We Are Hiring for Spring 2014
The switchover is manual in several of the buildings (Hughes, McDowell, Leonard, Centennial, and Anderson), so Resident Assistants will enter student rooms to perform the adjustment from Friday, October 25th through Monday, October 28th. The process involves turning a special key in your air unit. Because every individual has different temperature preferences, some residents will inevitably experience some displeasure with the temperature during the transitional weeks in the spring and fall when weather patterns are stabilizing. During this period of time, you should utilize your windows, blankets, or adjust your clothing choices as appropriate. Individual air-conditioners/heating units are not allowed for electrical and fire safety reasons.

Soapy Joe’s Pickup & Delivery Laundry Service If there is one thing every student could use more of at American University, it is time. Fortunately, AU’s new vendor, Soapy Joe’s can provide that for you. Soapy Joe’s offers weekly wash-and-fold laundry services with pickup and delivery at your residence hall. Safety in the Residence Halls Housing & Dining Programs sends a general reminder to all residents in regards to avoiding theft of personal belongings: Make sure your door is locked and dead bolt secured when you are asleep or not in your space; Avoid leaving valuables in sight to others when entering and exiting your room; Do not leave any items unattended in the hallways or personal rooms without securing your door. If you have any concerns with the functioning of your room door/lock, please contact your residence hall desk. We also encourage all residents to contact staff immediately if you notice any unfamiliar or suspicious individuals/ activity happening in the building. You can do this by contacting your front desk, or Public Safety at (202) 885-2527.
Just a couple more things…
If you lose your AUID Card, please make sure to freeze your account at www.eaglebucks.com and to contact Public Safety at 202-885-2527. Campus residents should regularly check their AU spam email filter to ensure that you are receiving all of the official communications from American University. Please remember that all official communications from AU will come to your student.american.edu email address. Please continue to be mindful of our neighbors when traveling to and from off-campus. In light of AU’s development of a new campus facilities master plan, we want to be respectful of the neighbors and families living near campus. You can help us make sure that the AU community continues to have positive relationships with our neighbors by keeping noise levels down when walking along Nebraska and Massachusetts Avenues and by ensuring that trash is thrown into the proper trash receptacles.

If you’re ordering gifts or anything that will be shipped to you for the holidays, please note that the last day to receive mail and packages on campus for the fall 2013 semester is Tuesday, December 17th, 2013. Make sure that all of your packages are delivered on or before that date.
RHA Events and Info RHA North Campus Haunted House and Halloween Party On Tuesday, October 29th from 8:00 pm- 11:00 pm, RHA Hall Councils will be hosting a Haunted House and Halloween party throughout the North Campus halls. Get ready to be scared and have a good time. RHA Thanksgiving Feast For students staying in the residence halls over Thanksgiving Break, RHA is looking to host a Thanksgiving Feast on North and South Campus. Look for more information to come!
