In August, we sat down with Glenn, the Director of Recreation and Parks, to ask him a few questions about the work of the department and his vision for Recreation and Parks: Thomas Jefferson once said “Leave all the afternoon for exercise and recreation, which are as necessary as reading. I will rather say more necessary because health is worth more than learning”. With your more than 35 years of professional experience in Recreation, how important is leisure quality time nowadays and how do you recreate?

The Masterplan and Special Events Plan are two of the department’s focal points. Can you tell us a little bit about these two studies?

Thomas Jefferson never experienced Snapchat, Twitter, Instagram, Xbox, or Nintendo!!! And while I am an avid supporter and user of Social Media, it and video games have changed a lot about the ways people spend their non-programmed leisure time. Today, programmed time we now have with our users is more compressed than it’s ever been.

The Department Masterplan is an overall assessment of the agency. For the first time in 40 years we did a comprehensive review. A survey gathered input from the community on their wants and opinions. Focus group meeting provided input from elected officials, staff and customers. All of our parks were reviewed and recommendations made on areas of strengths, weaknesses and possible improvements. Following those reviews park improvements and restoration cost analysis were created for each park. This information will be used in the future to help develop SPLOST request and to prioritize capital funding.

The 2016 Nielsen Social Media Report stated that Generation X (ages 35-49) spends almost 7 hours per week on Social Media versus Millennials, who come in second, spending just over 6 hours per week. I wonder how many of Gen X’ers and Millennials spend 6-7 hours per week in a park. We have to take advantage of the time we have these age groups and all age groups in our parks and maximize their experiences. Personally, my recreation comes from a couple of avenues. I enjoy gardening at home and try to plant as many native plants as possible. As often as I can, I enjoy walking at Phinizy Swamp and in Hitchcock Woods in Aiken. When I can get away for an extended period, I enjoy hiking in the upstate of SC along the Chattooga River and at Table Rock State park. I also have recently started attending F3 sessions at 5:30 am 2-3 days per week. These are a little more intense than my walk in the woods.

Both of these studies provide guidelines for the Department to follow in upcoming years as we look to renovate parks, build new parks, develop trails and enhance our special events.

GLENN PARKER DIRECTOR

From a programming standpoint, information was gathered on who our users are, what they would like offered in our recreation centers and parks, and their willingness to pay for programs. This Masterplan is not a short-term solution for Recreation and Parks in Augusta. It’s a long-term approach to how Recreation and Parks in Augusta should be perceived, supported and funded. The Events Plan for Public Parks was presented in May 2017. Completed by our consultant Convention, Sports and Leisure, the plan is an assessment of our current events and the facilities which house these events. We also completed a survey of local residents to gain their input on what type of events they would like to see and where they would like to see the events held. Much like the overall Masterplan, the Events Plan is a blueprint to guide us as we develop Events and programs in the coming years. Each of these documents are available online at www.Augustaga.gov. (continued on page 3)

Looking back at the Spring/Summer season, what was your favorite experience or event with Recreation and Parks? Wow, it is so hard to narrow down to one specific experience with the hundreds of opportunities we offer during that time. We were fortunate to host the GRPA state track meet in May at Laney High School. Having over 1,600 participants and their parents and guests in Augusta provided a large economic impact. As someone who has never been a speedster on the track I really enjoyed watching the young people run. No matter how hard we try, not everything can always be perfect. Are there areas where you would like to see improvements or change? Up front I want to say that this is in no way a derogatory comment toward the efforts of our current staff. We have over 60 parks in our system. I would like to see us reach a level of staffing and funding where we are able to focus our efforts on making impactful change. Currently we spend a lot of time and effort simply maintaining our parks as quickly and simply as we can with the responsibilities we have.

I would like to see us keep our recreation centers open longer in the evening on week nights and open more on the weekend for the general public.

One of our core values is Health and Wellness, and the department has just recently intensified efforts to implement healthy eating and physical activity standards in the After-School programs and across the Department. What is your vision of promoting healthy lifestyles? “Culture eats strategy for breakfast, is a famous quotation attributed to the late business management guru Peter Drucker. Health and Wellness are great examples of where we, Recreation and Parks, need to place more emphasize and participate in rather than simply strategizing and planning for our participants. As an agency we need to establish a culture of healthy eating and active lifestyles by setting the examples. We should be offering healthier eating and physical activity opportunities not only in our after-school programs, but at all our concession stands, via our vendors at our events and in our vending machines. As many of our programs as possible need to have an active component. Recently we have upgraded fitness equipment in several of our recreation centers. We hope people take advantage of this opportunity. From a long term approach we plan to increase the number of trails and trial connectivity in Augusta through SPLOST VII and hopefully more in future SPLOST. We are working with the Land Trust, Canal Authority, local bike clubs and surrounding counties to connect existing trails and future planned trails. Thank you Glenn!

Aquatics

About There are many great reasons why swimming is being considered one of the healthiest exercises! Swimming is easy on the joints, trains your muscles, helps with weight loss - a true all-rounder. The best thing: Anyone can participate. Age, shape or fitness level don’t matter and injuries are extremely rare. There is always something you can do to improve your overall health at one of our aquatic facilities. In the water we are almost weightless. We give our bones and joints a break because we only carry one seventh of our body weight. For overweight people, sports such as jogging and cycling can quickly lead to joint problems. Experts therefore often advise at the beginning of a weight reduction to forego sports that may put a burden on your joints. Swimming is an ideal alternative. Swimming reduces stress, improves flexibility, stamina and muscle strength - and let’s not forget: Swimming is lots of fun!

Things to do

Our Aquatic Facilities offer a wide variety of programs and activities for everyone to enjoy. Please check out our website for class schedules and new programs.

Recreational Swim Leisure time in our recreational pool? Sure, why not! Our 25-yard by 48-foot recreational pool with one-meter and three-meter springboards is ideal to spend some refreshing leisure time with friends or family.

Lap Swim We have just the right swimming lane for you - no matter whether you want to swim some laps to relax, prepare for a competition or to improve your overall health. Swimming is a great way to stay fit.

Competitive Swim For those with a competitive spirit: We have the team for you! Come check out ASL (Aiken Augusta Swim League) and see what it takes to be a winner. For more information you can contact Adam Sasso at aslcoachadam@gmail.com.

Aqua Fitness Aqua fitness is a class for everyone, regardless of your fitness level. This class in our heated recreational pool offers made-to-measure fitness because for every exercise there are plenty of modifications to increase or decrease the difficulty.

Swim Lessons We offer swim classes for all ages and levels from 6 months to

adults because we want you to enjoy your summer and water activities without fear! All our classes are based on American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Program and will gradually teach you water safety, being comfortable in and around water, fundamental aquatic skills and swimming techniques.

Senior Swim This program is a great experience for adults 50 years and older and will help with long term health and wellness issues. Stretches and exercises that an individual may have a hard time performing on land, are made easier in the water. Don’t let age stop you from having a little fun!

PARKS IN AUGUSTA

Augusta, Georgia is home to more than 70 active, passive, pocket, neighborhood and regional parks. “Core to the mission of public parks and recreation is the preservation of natural resources and the promotion of good conservation and stewardship practices. In today’s world, where conservation and environmental stewardship is on everyone’s minds, public parks and lands are viewed as essential to protect open space and preserve nature – our land, water, trees, open space, wildlife. But even more so, we value what conservation of these resources bring to us such as clean air to breathe, clean water to drink, protection from and prevention of extreme weather events and more. Public parks and recreation everywhere are engaging in good environmental stewardship practices that ensure communities and future generations can reap the benefits of a protected and enhanced recreational environment. Now more than ever, we must demonstrate and show how parks are essential to the quality of the environment and lives of all.”

AUGUSTA RIVERWALK

The Augusta Riverwalk spans between 6th & 10th Streets in Downtown Augusta along the Savannah River. The Riverwalk consists of two bricked levels: The upper level accessible via stairways/ramps located at the ends of 10th Street, 8th Street Plaza & 6th Streets and the lower level are accessed via the RiverWalk Marina (5th Street), the 8th Street Plaza, the Jessye Norman Amphitheatre, and the 10th Plaza (in front of the Marriott). In 1986, construction began on the Augusta Riverwalk. The Riverwalk is built between the Savannah River and a historic levee that served to protect Augusta from the raging waters of the Savannah River. Augusta has an eventful history of floods. Today the river flows quietly through Augusta and the major floods are fading memories. The opening to the levee is marked to show the water levels for all of the floods that occurred.

The Riverwalk features a children’s playground, various gardens, and includes several smaller venues for markets, special events and private celebrations. Two museums are located off the walkway along with the Jessye Norman Amphitheater and several restaurants. All this makes the Riverwalk great for families out for some fresh air along the Savannah River. PARK SYSTEM FUN THINGS TO DO WITH YOUR DOG

Dog owners who live in the middle of the city know the problem all too well: In order for their four-legged companion to get their daily exercise, not having to put them on a leash would be quite helpful. In most parks, however, this is usually not allowed - mainly due to safety concerns. The city of Augusta is maintaining two dog parks for dogs to exercise and play off-leash in a controlled environment under the supervision of their guardians.

Rules:

Off-leash parks are good for dogs, their guardians and the whole community.

Off-leash parks:  Promote good canine physical health and socialization, reducing nuisance behaviors and making dogs better canine citizens.  Discourage delinquent and criminal activity in parks.  Encourage people to exercise and stimulate social interaction with other people.  Build a community of people committed to parks, community involvement and the environment

     

 

No dog without people. No people without dogs. Use park at your own risk. Owners are legally responsible for the behavior of their dog(s) at all times. Dog waste must be cleaned up by their owners immediately. Owners must be within the dog park and supervising their dog with leash readily available. Dog handlers must be at least 16 years of age. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult and supervised at all times. Aggressive dogs must be removed immediately. Dogs should be under voice control.
