The American University wrestling team is set to compete in the 109th EIWA Championships this Friday and Saturday, March 8-9 at the Rutgers Athletic Center in Piscataway, N.J. The tournament will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday and will conclude with the championship matches at 3 p.m. on Saturday. The Eagles are looking to improve upon its program record third place finish at least year’s EIWA Championships with two champions. What to Watch For Kevin Tao returns to the EIWA Championships after his runner-up finish a year ago. Tao was seeded eighth a year ago and posted three victories on his way to the title bout, including an injury default against topseeded Mario Mason of Rutgers. The senior dropped a 6-4 decision to Lehigh’s Shane Welsh in the championship. He is preseeded fifth heading into this year’s championship. Blake Herrin enters the tournament as the second seeded wrestler at heavyweight. This will be Herrin’s first appearance in the EIWA Championships. David Terao also makes his first appearance at the conference championships after redshirting last season. He is preseeded fourth at 125 lbs. Phillip Barreiro is preseeded at No. 8 (165 lbs.) while Thomas Barreiro (184 lbs.) and Esteban Gomez-Rivera (133 lbs.) are preseeded 10th and 11th, respectively. NCAA Qualifying The EIWA Championships will serve as American’s qualifying tournament into the NCAA Championships. This year, a total of 45 automatic qualifiers have been allocated to the EIWA, which is the second most among all conferences behind only the Big Ten. Each weight * Top-8 according to EIWA poll class has been assigned a specific released on March 6. All other teams number of automatic qualifiers based are listed according to dual meet upon each individual’s Div. I winning winning percentage. percentage, RPI and the NCAA Coaches Panel Rankings. The remaining 40 atlarge qualifiers will be chosen after all qualifying tournaments have been completed and will be announced on March 13. American University Wrestling teague MOORE Head Coach • 2nd Season • Oklahoma State ‘99 The 2012-13 season will be Teague Moore’s second season as the head wrestling coach at American University. In his first year at American in 2011-12, Moore led the Eagles to a programrecord third-place finish at the EIWA Championships and a 19th-place result at the NCAA Championships. AU crowned two EIWA Champions, earned six EIWA placewinners, and sent five wrestlers to the NCAA Championships, recording two All-Americans. In the classroom, Moore’s Eagles finished with a 3.32 team GPA, the third-highest in Division I wrestling. A NWCA-best five student-athletes were named to the All-Academic Team, which included Daniel Mitchell’s 3.95 cumulative GPA, the second-highest in the country. Prior to arriving at American, Moore was the head coach at Clarion in Clarion, Pa., for five seasons. He led the Golden Eagles to a fourthplace finish at the 2011 Eastern Wrestling League Championships and the program’s first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championship since 1994. He was named the 2011 PSAC Coach of the Year. “We are very excited to welcome Teague Moore to American University as the new head coach of our wrestling program,” Director of Athletics and Recreation Keith Gill stated at the time of Moore’s hire. “Teague has the skills, experience and drive to lead our student-athletes to continued success on the mat and in the classroom. His values are in alignment with our institution’s principles of commitment to academic and athletic achievements.” Moore sent eight student-athletes to the NCAA Division I Championships in five years at Clarion and this season was one win shy of crowning the program’s first All-American

since 2005. Sophomore James Fleming won the 157 lbs. title at the EWL Championships and was named the Outstanding Wrestler, marking Clarion’s first EWL Champion since 2005 and first “OW” since 1980. Moore’s squad also boasted this year’s PSAC “OW” in 197 lbs. sophomore Alex Thomas and three PSAC Champions. Moore inherited a team coming off a program record fifthplace finish at the NCAA Championships in 2011. American returned two All-American’s in Ryan Flores and Ganbayar Sanjaa, two EIWA Champions in Flores and Matt Mariacher and nine of 10 starters from a team which won a program record 14 dual meets in 2010-11. Moore replaces Mark Cody, who after nine seasons at American, was named the head coach at Oklahoma. “I am grateful to the American University Athletics Department for their support and confidence with this decision,” commented Moore when he arrived at American. “AU’s wrestling program has proven to be a strong national contender with a very successful record in academics. Both of those elements have been the key to my approach and focus. I’m eager to continue building upon the recent successes of the American program.” Moore was a four-year starter at Oklahoma State under Head Coach John Smith, winning the 1998 118 lbs. NCAA Championship with a pin of Michigan State’s Dave Morgan in the finals. A three-time All-American, he also placed third in 1999, fourth in 1997 and qualified for Nationals as a freshman. Moore was a two-time BIG XII Champion and runner-up as a senior, and currently ranks 18th in Cowboy history with a career record of 118-25.


American University Wrestling Moore continued his wrestling career at the international level following his graduation from Oklahoma State, placing third at the 2000 and 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials and winning the 2000 University World Freestyle Championship and 2002 U.S. Open National Championship. He was a three-time member of the National Team, earning a silver medal at the 2003 World Cup and placing second at the 2002 World Team Trials. He also took third place at the 2003 World Team Trials, 2003 U.S. Open National Championships and 2004 U.S. Open National Championships.

Championships, after beginning his career as an assistant at Pittsburgh. Moore was inducted into the Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2008. Wrestling for North Allegheny High School he was a three-time Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association placewinner and 1995 State Champion. He was also a three-time Pennsylvania State Freestyle Champion, three-time Junior National Freestyle Champion and National High School Champion in 1995. Moore is a 1999 graduate of Oklahoma State. He and his wife, Mary Alice, have three daughters and one son.

Prior to being named head coach at Clarion, Moore spent the 2005-06 season as an assistant at Harvard. In 2003-04 he was the director of film and facilities for the Oklahoma State program which won the 2004 NCAA Team Championship, BIG XII Championship and National Duals Championship. He also spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Oklahoma, helping the Sooners to a third-place finish at the 2003 NCAA

American University Wrestling kyle BORSHOFF Assistant Coach • 3rd Season • American ‘10 The 2012-13 season will be Kyle Borshoff’s third season on the American University wrestling coaching staff and his second campaign as a full-time assistant coach. In 2011-12, American recorded a program-record third-place finish at the EIWA Championships. Two Eagles -- heavyweight Ryan Flores and Matt Mariacher (141 lbs.) -- were crowned conference champions and Flores and Ganbayar Sanjaa (157 lbs.) earned All-America honors. Borshoff worked closely throughout the season with Mariacher and Sanjaa, who combined to register a 48-15 record on the campaign. Borshoff served as a volunteer assistant coach in 201011, helping American to its best season in program history. American placed fifth at the NCAA Championships and crowned three All-Americans, with Flores becoming just the second Eagle to reach the NCAA Finals. American placed fourth at the EIWA Championships as Steve Fittery, Flores and Mariacher each captured individual titles. The Eagles’ 14 dual meet victories set a record for most wins in a season. American also excelled in the classroom in each of the last two years. The team was ranked second in the country in combined GPA in 2010-11 (3.48 GPA) and finished third in 2011-12 with a 3.3.32 mark. Six Eagles were named NWCA

Academic All-Americans in 2010-11, setting a new NWCA record, and adding five more in 2011-12. Borshoff graduated from the Kogod School of Business in May 2010 with a degree in business administration. He was a two-time All-American as an Eagle, a two-time Midlands Placewinner and three-time NCAA Qualifier. He graduated with a career record of 102-39 and currently ranks fifth in career wins, fifth in career falls, fourth in career technical falls and sixth in career major decisions. In his last season with the Eagles, Borshoff earned his second consecutive All-America honor by placing eighth at the NCAA Championships to become one of only four student-athletes in American history to earn multiple All-America honors. He finished the 2009-10 season with an overall record of 28-8 and a dual meet record of 16-0, and recorded four tech falls and four falls. Borshoff placed fifth at the EIWA Championships and seventh at the Midlands Championships as a senior, and was ranked as high as third in the InterMat College Rankings. Borshoff earned his first All-America honor in 2009, placing seventh at the NCAA Championships and recording a 33-7 overall record. He finished third at the EIWA Championships and fourth at the Midlands Championships. Borshoff first qualified for the NCAA Championships as a freshman after a fourth-place showing at the EIWA Championships, making him the first true freshman in American history to qualify for Nationals.


American University Wrestling pete FRIEDL Assistant Coach • 2nd Season • Illinois ‘06 The 2012-13 season will be Pete Friedl’s second season on the American University wrestling coaching staff. In 2011-12, American recorded a programrecord third-place finish at the EIWA Championships. Two Eagles -- heavyweight Ryan Flores and Matt Mariacher (141 lbs.) -- were crowned conference champions and Flores and Ganbayar Sanjaa (157 lbs.) earned All-America honors. Freidl worked closely

throughout the season with Flores, who was ranked No. 1 in the country at heavyweight for 16 straight weeks during the campaign.

Friedl came to American after one season as an assistant coach at Appalachian State. Friedl helped guide two Mountaineer wrestlers to the NCAA Championships. Friedl was a standout collegiate wrestler at Illinois where he was a four-time NCAA qualifier (2003-06) and three-time AllAmerican (200406), placing as high as third at 184 lbs. in his senior season. He captured the Big Ten conference championship in 2005, leading the Ilini to the team title that season. Friedl was also a 2006 Midlands Champion, propelling Illinois to its third straight championship at that event. He graduated as the third-winningest wrestler in Ilini history with 125 career victories. Friedl graduated from Illinois in 2006 with a Bachelor’s degree in Community Health. Following his graduation, he remained at Illinois for four years where he served as an assistant with the strength and conditioning program.

luke MANUEL Volunteer Assistant Coach • 1st Season • Purdue ‘11 Luke Manuel joins the coaching staff at American as a volunteer assistant coach for the 2012-13 season. Manuel graduated from Purdue University in May of 2011 with a degree in business. He was a four-year letterwinner posting an overall record of 118-40 in both 165 and 174 weight classes. He competed in three consecutive NCAA Championships. Manuel also was named a NWCA Academic All American three times and a four-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree. Manuel set the Purdue program single season record for

wins with 41 during the 2009-10 season. He currently is fourth all-time in program wins (118) and holds the 11th best all-time program win percentage (.747). He was also mamed most valuable wrestler for the Boilermakers in 2011. Prior to attending Purdue, Manuel was a three-time Greco All-American with three top-10 national finishes and 2006 High School All-American.
