Saturday, February 18, 2012 • 2:00 p.m. ET Bender Arena • Washington, D.C. Web: Patriot League All*Access The American University women’s basketball team will look to become the third Patriot League team in history to go 12-0 in conference play when it hosts Army on Saturday, February 18 at 2 p.m. American (19-6, 11-0 PL) wrapped up its third Patriot League regular season title in a row -- and fourth in the last five seasons -- with Wednesday’s 55-52 comeback win at second-place Navy. The Eagles faced a 15-point halftime deficit, but opened the second half on a 13-0 spurt to nearly draw even. A few minutes later, a bucket by Lisa Strack at the 7:46 mark gave AU its first lead since 8-7 in the first half. Leading by one late in the game, a pair of clutch Strack free throws with 10 seconds remaining extended AU’s advantage to three. Navy came back the other way and its last-second three-point attempt for the tie was off the mark as AU held on for the win. The Eagles have now won 11 games in a row, matching the program record for most consecutive wins. AU reached 11 in a row twice before in program history, both which came in the previous four seasons. In 200708, American had an 11-game run as well as last season from November 28, 2011 through January 22, 2011. The Eagles can set a new program record with a win Saturday over Army.

Two previous Patriot League teams have reached 12-0 in conference play in the 22-year history of the conference. Both 12-0 teams were Holy Cross in 1990-91 and 1996-97 back when the league schedule was 12 total games (due to only seven conference schools). No Patriot League team W, 70-47 has gone undefeated in a 14-game conference schedule.

Patriot League Quarterfinals & TBD this season, a 40-39 victory in Christl Arena on January 21. Strack knocked Patriot League Semifinals & TBD down two free throws for American with 0.9 seconds remaining to give AU the victory. The contest featured 11 ties and eight lead changes. Back-to-Back Patriot League Co-Regular Season Champions

American University Women’s Basketball Record-Setting Start The Eagles are 11-0 in the Patriot League, their best start in program history. AU’s run also marks the best start in the Patriot League since Holy Cross began 11-0 in the 2000-01 season. Two Patriot League teams have finished the regular season with perfect marks, both of which were Holy Cross with a 12-0 record back when there were seven conference schools (1990-91 and 1996-97). No Patriot League team has ever finished 14-0 in conference play. AU’s 11 straight wins also match a program record, which was set on two previous occasions (2007-08 and 2010-11).

2011-12 Another Regular Season Title AU’s win at Navy on Wednesday gives the Eagles their third Patriot League regular season championship in a row and TEAM American fourth in the last five seasons. Corkery Making History Head Coach Matt Corkery has accumulated a 82-37 record in four seasons at the helm at American, and his .689 winning percentage is the best in Patriot League history. Additionally, his .811 winning percentage in conference play (43-10) is also tops in history of the conference.

Enjoying the Road The Eagles are 10-1 away from home this season with eight true road victories and two neutral site wins. Last year, AU won 12 games last season away from Bender Arena -- nine true road games and three neutral-site contests -- which tied the program-record for most away-from-home victories in a season. AU also earned 12 triumphs away from home during the 1986-87 and 1997-98 seasons. Approaching 1,000 Senior Lisa Strack is rapidly approaching the 1,000 point mark for her career as she currently sits with 992 points. With eight more points, she will become the 15th student-athlete in program history to reach the magic number. D is Key American has won 18 of its last 22 games -- including a program-record 11 in a row -- and defense has been a key factor. The Eagles have held 12 of those opponents under 50 points with seven of the foes scoring at or below the 45-point mark. On the season, the Eagles are allowing 52.4 ppg, the 12th-best mark in the country. In conference play, American has allowed a conference-best 48.0 ppg. Grand Theft AU has recorded double-digit steals in 13 of its last 22 games, including a season-best 20 in the February 8 win at Lehigh, which was the eighth-most in a single game in program history. The Eagles currently lead the Patriot League with 11.0 steals per contest, while individually, Lisa Strack leads the Patriot League with 2.6 spg. Alexis Dobbs and Ebony Edwards are tied for third with 2.0 spg. Edwards registered a career-high seven vs. Lehigh on February 8, tied for the ninth-most in a single game in program history. Taking Care of the Rock AU leads the Patriot League in turnover margin at +4.28 and is the only conference team to have a margin higher the +0.15 (AU is ranked 30th nationally in the statistic). In conference play, American’s turnover margin is a league-best +8.2. Block Party Stephanie Anya put together a record-setting evening in the January 11 win over Lehigh with a program record seven blocked shots. The junior is second in the Patriot League with 1.9 bpg this year.

American University Women’s Basketball Dumiak Stepping Up Freshman guard Jen Dumiak has played a key role off AU’s bench, scoring in double figures in four of her last six games, and was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week on Monday for her 16.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg, and 3.5 apg week vs. Lehigh and Holy Cross. Dumiak set a career-high on December 30 with 19 points on 6-of-7 shooting in the win over Western Michigan, and she nearly matched that last Wednesday with 18 points off the bench vs. Lehigh. Dumiak also tallied a career-high nine assists on January 28 against Lafayette. Big Expectations for 2011-12 American has been picked first in the Patriot League preseason poll, the second straight season the Eagles have been selected to win the league. Additionally, Strack, an All-Patriot League Second Team performer last year, has been named to the Preseason All-Patriot League Team.

CORKERY

Head Coach • 4th Season • West Texas A&M, ‘93 • 82-37 The 2011-12 season is Matt Corkery’s fourth as the head coach at American University and his seventh overall on the staff. Corkery has accumulated a 82-37 career record at the helm in his four years, including a 43-10 mark in Patriot League play. In his three seasons, his squads have earned two Patriot League regular season championships, two appearances in the Patriot League Championship Game, two WNIT berths, and he was honored with the 2010 Patriot League Coach of the Year award. Corkery has coached one Patriot League Player of the Year, three Patriot League All-Rookie Team honorees, five All-Patriot League selections, and 21 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll picks.

Corkery By the Numbers In his 4 seasons at head coach at American - 82 wins (82-37 record) - 43 Patriot League triumphs (43-10 record) - 42 home victories (42-12 in Bender Arena) - 21 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll selections - 5 All-Patriot League picks (Michelle Kirk - 2009, 10; Liz Leer 2010, 11; Lisa Strack - 2011) - 3 Patriot League All-Rookie Team honorees (Ebony Edwards 2009; Lisa Strack - 2009; Alexis Dobbs - 2011) - 2 Patriot League Regular Season Championships (2010, 11) - 2 Patriot League Championship Game appearances (2010, 11) - 2 WNIT berths (2009, 10) - 2 20-win seasons (22-10 in 2009-10; 22-9 in 2010-11) - 1 Patriot League Player of the Year (Michelle Kirk - 2010) - 1 Patriot League Coach of the Year honor (2010)

Corkery has already etched his place in the Patriot League record books with his .670 career winning percentage, which is second alltime in conference history (heading into this season). Kevin Morris, who coached at Fordham from 1993-95, owns the best career winning percentage in Patriot League history with his .678 mark. Additionally, with a victory over Brown last December 31, Corkery became the fastest coach in program history to reach the 50-win plateau as it took him only 76 total games to that point. The 2010-11 season was a successful campaign for Corkery’s Eagles, as they earned a share of their second straight Patriot League regular season crown with a 10-4 record. AU reached the Patriot League Championship Game for the second straight season after winning at Lehigh, the league’s two-time defending champion, in an overtime thriller in the semifinals. American finished with 22 victories on the season, matching the 2009-10 team for the second-most single-season wins in program history. The 2010-11 squad also set history with its 11-game win streak from November 28, 2010 through January 29, 2011, which matched a program record. During that span, the Eagles captured the Hawk Holiday Classic with victories over Binghamton and Brown. AU also extended its home win streak to 14 games with a midseason victory over Holy Cross, a mark that tied another program record.

11

The 2009-10 campaign, Corkery’s second as the head coach, was a historic season for the Eagles as they finished Patriot League play with a 13-1 Patriot League record, their best ever conference record. This 13-1 mark earned AU a share of the Patriot League regular season championship. American’s 22-10 overall record gave the Eagles only their fourth ever 20-win season, and the 22 triumphs were the second-most in school history. As a result, AU was rewarded with its program-record third straight postseason berth and Corkery was tabbed as the conference’s coach of the year, American’s second-ever honoree. In Corkery’s inaugural season of 2008-09, he led American to a 19-12 record, which included the program’s second consecutive postseason appearance. The Eagles’ 10-5 non-conference record was the best in program history, and their 19 total victories were the most since the 1997-98 campaign. The Eagles defeated two NCAA Tournament teams, Drexel and Lehigh, during the season.

In addition to on-the-court success, Corkery has helped bring increased interest to the program. The Eagles have set new attendance record in Bender Arena twice during his tenure, the first time occuring on February 7, 2009, when 1,177 fans saw the Eagles defeat Lehigh, 65-56. A year later on February 13, 2010, 1,291 spectators came out to Bender to watch American roll 82-47 past Colgate. “We are pleased with the progress that Matt and his staff have made with our women’s basketball program over the last three years both on and off the court,” commented Director of Athletics and Recreation Keith Gill. “He is a great teacher of the game and his passion for this team will translate into continued success for this program. We’re excited for what this season and the future will bring.” Corkery was named to his current position on May 19, 2008 after serving as AU’s associate head coach during the 200708 campaign, which saw the Eagles earn the program’s first-ever Patriot League regular season championship and berth in the WNIT. In 2007, he was elevated from assistant coach/recruiting coordinator to associate head coach. With the promotion, Corkery assumed additional responsibilities both on and off the court. Corkery joined the Eagles in 2004 after spending three

American University Women’s Basketball seasons as the associate head coach at Division II Emporia State (Kan.). During his tenure with the Hornets, Corkery helped guide the squad to a 63-25 record and No. 2 rankings nationally in both the 2001-02 and 2003-04 seasons. Corkery served as an assistant coach at Stephen F. Austin University from 1999-2001. During his tenure, the Ladyjacks won consecutive Southland Conference titles and made successive appearances in the NCAA Tournament. In 2000, the Ladyjacks advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division I Tournament as a 12-seed. Corkery’s squad recorded a 54-11 record during his tenure at Stephen F. Austin. From 1996 to 1999, as head coach at Howard College (Texas), he led the Lady Hawks to three top 10 rankings in the National Junior College Athletic Association polls and an overall record of 90-12. In 1998, Corkery was named the NJCAA Region V Coach of the Year, as his squad compiled a 34-3 record and finished in third-place in the NJCAA National Tournament. Corkery earned a Bachelor’s degree in

education in 1993 and a Master’s of sports and exercise sciences in 1996 from West Texas A&M University. While with the Lady Buffs, Corkery worked his way up from student assistant coach to graduate assistant and eventually earned a full-time assistant coaching position.
