10.11.2010. We Marched. As I write this, it is the day after the National Demo in London and over 200 Winchester students have marched through the streets of London to protest against the cuts to Higher Education. All Winchester students did themselves proud, chanted loudly and peacefully made our point known amongst 50,000 staff and students from across the country. The amount of students that we took to London massively exceeded our original target and also numbers taken by Universities of a much bigger size. This is an awesome achievement from all involved and has really put Winchester Student Union on the map. A lot of effort and time had gone into preparation for the event so I would personally like to thank all the Executive team and students who signed up to attend! As I am sure you would have read on the news, the demonstration was, unfortunately, overshadowed, by a minority who decided to act like idiots in gaining entrance to the Conservative HQ. Such violence is not acceptable and should not undermine the real reason as to why the protest was taking place. Over 50,000 students including those from Winchester marched to show that the Coalition Government’s plans for Higher Education are going to have a huge impact on the next generation of students. The government plan to cut the teaching grant, scrap funding for arts and humanities subjects and raise tuition fees to £9,000 year causing soaring levels of debt. This is simply not acceptable and poses a huge threat to the future of Higher Education. Although the demonstration has now finished, the issue is by no means over. We will continue to pressurise MP’s in voting against these plans and honouring the pledges that they signed prior to the General Election. Promises are made to be kept and I am proud to represent Winchester Students in opposing these ridiculous, devastating cuts. 300 out of the 52,000 were involved in the violent scenes – that’s 0.5% of the total. 99.5% protested peacefully for a serious issue and this should be documented. There should be a fair, properly funded education system and we will continue to make our voices heard. ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.’ Nelson Mandela

So some great movies planned for the next two weekends...here’s my review on the movies were showing with a little help from some friends… Monsters vs. Aliens: So basically a meteorite from outer space hits a young California woman named Susan Murphy, turns her into a giant monster and is then taken a secret government compound where she meets a ragtag group of monsters also rounded up over the years. A hilarious movie unravels as with all great action(ish!) movies the U.S. Government take desperate measures and call the motley crew of monsters to combat aliens and save the world from imminent destruction...what more could you ask from DreamWorks studios!

Monday 22nd Nov - Rubbish Audit: Okay, so it may not be terribly glamorous but why not help the SU and the University to conduct a waste audit! Essentially several bags of rubbish from different locations on campus will be gathered in the Vault and will then be audited for content. Before you all say ‘Yuck what’s the point in that’, you should know that this helps the Uni to understand what people are throwing away and whether any of it should have been put in recycle bins and vise-versa . Taking place from 10am12noon (with a free drink and pizza slice for all volunteers).

Tuesday 23rd - Film screenings: A good mix of documentaries and Hollywood blockbusters that help make us think about the consequences of ignoring our environmental responsibilities. For full listings please see the entertainment middle pages. Also contribute to our Phone & Toy drive. Got any old phones or toys you want to get rid of? Why not bring them into the SU reception, so that we can send them on to a reuse charity.

Thursday 25th - Switch Off! Take some time today to turn off any and all powered devices that you see on unnecessarily. If you haven’t done so already, why not sign up to become and Eco-Power Ranger on Facebook and join the Student Switch Off team (search FB for University of Winchester Student Switch Off).

Friday 26th - flirt! goes GREEN. See ents listings for details. Also look out for the daytime costume wokshops being organised by the SU officer team. Saturday 27th - The Big Tidy Up! Be one of the many volunteers to roam around the local community on Winchesters largest (and frankly most fun) litter pick. Tiddy Uppers to meet at the Terrace Bar and finish there too for a complimentary drink. Email: a.a.emmerson to join the tidy! Sunday 28th - Our riotously good pub quiz goes greenish! Win some fabulous ‘green’ prizes in the weekly quiz, bonus round.

How to Train Your Dragon: And to top off the weekend finish the night with this brilliant movie from the creators of Shrek! Long ago up North on the Island of Berk, the young Viking, Hiccup, wants to join his town's fight against the dragons that continually raid their town. However, his macho father and village leader, Stoik the Vast, will not allow his small, clumsy, but inventive son to do so. As anyone in this situation would do, Hiccup ventures into battle but instead befriends a dragon and a friendship builds with laugh out loud moments with a hidden message within the obvious message that the observant boy learns his people have misjudged the species. But even as the two each take flight in their own way, they find that they must fight the destructive ignorance plaguing their world. Another must see – for free! Toy Story marathon- because we all know our toys are real and friends for life! Ground breaking, brilliant, this is a brilliant movie to kick the day off with as this marathon will not only let you be a kid again but you can fully immerse yourself in the lives of your favourite toys and watch the story to its final conclusion! Toy Story & Toy Story 2 – if you haven’t seen these, where have you been? They’re awesome! Toy Story 3: Woody, Buzz and the whole gang are back. As their owner Andy prepares to depart for college, his loyal toys find themselves in daycare where untamed tots with their sticky little fingers do not play nice. So, it's all for one and one for all as they join Barbie's counterpart Ken, a thespian hedgehog named Mr. Pricklepants and a pink, strawberry-scented teddy bear called Lots-o'-Huggin' Bear to plan their great escape. Bring tissues as it will bring tears in your eyes as you finally realise childhood is over and everyone grows up...except if you're a toy! Enjoy! Teddy Vice President Activities & Services
