WELCOME BISHOP MACHOLZ THE BISHOP IS COMING! Dec. 24 4:00 PM Christmas Eve Worship Service Bishop John S. Macholz will be our guest preacher on Christmas Eve at our 4:00 PM festival service. We welcome his presence with us in worship, and are grateful for an opportunity to welcome him back to Atonement - as well as his wife Lin, and daughter and son-in-law, Barb and Matt.

PASTOR’S PAGE The words “Come, Lord Jesus, be our guest…” begin meals at many of our homes. They are words of expectation and hope in the presence of God even at our humble meals. They are words that speak to Jesus’ presence with us as we discuss the events of the day and our plans for the evening. This simple table grace speaks volumes in just the first six words. Come, Lord Jesus, is also our prayer for Advent as we look for signs of Christ’s presence in our daily lives: at our meals, in our sleeping and waking, within and among friends and family and congregation. This Advent as we wait for the celebration of the coming of Christ’s birth, let us take time each day to pray, “Come, Lord Jesus,” focusing on the ways that Christ is already present in our lives:  in the gift of forgiveness  in the sharing of bread and wine  in the daily work of caring for each other  in the peace we pray for and the justice we work towards  in the coffee and the cookies  in the cheerful noise of Sunday School gatherings  in the silence of our meditations May you find hope, joy and light this Advent season whenever – and wherever – you pray “Come, Lord Jesus, be our guest.”

DISCIPLESHIP ADVENT GIVING In the spirit of the season, during Advent we will have several opportunities to bring gifts to benefit others in our community: Nov. 27 - Brighton Food Depot Peanut butter, ravioli, cereal. Dec. 4 - Bethany House—Providing shelter for homeless women and children. Diapers, baby formula, baby food, toilet paper, paper towels, Kleenex, women’s and children’s winter hats and gloves. Dec. 11 - Saint's Place Helping legal refugees to resettle in Rochester. Adult men's and women’s small/medium winter coats, hats, scarves, gloves and boots. New or gently used. Dec. 18 - St. Joseph's Neighborhood Center Providing health care to people who lack access to health insurance. Personal-sized toiletries: soap, lotion, shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, disposable razors, brown paper lunch bags, gift cards ($10) to Wegman's or Tops, 2017 calendars. Thank you for remembering and caring for these ministries and those they serve.

An Advent tradition at Atonement continues this year with the Christmas tree decorated with tags containing gift suggestions for our adopted family. We are coordinating information with Flower City Habitat for Humanity, and will receive a family's Wish List from them very soon. By sponsoring a family living in a Habitat home, we enable them to focus their finances on mortgage and heating payments during the winter. The decorated tree will be set up in the entryway. Church friends and family may select a tag off the tree, purchase the suggested gift, and then return the wrapped gift for delivery to the family before Christmas. Thank you for generously participating in this outreach project.

Following the first service, we will gather in Reissig Hall for some coffee and conversation, and we will find a sumptuous display of some wonderful Christmas cookies baked by YOU! We are asking you to participate and bring 3-4 dozen of your favorite cookies. The first dozen of your cookies will be set aside to share with friends and staff at Bethany House and the rest will be put on the tables for the exchange. You may bring your own containers, but we will also supply boxes and bags. Please join in the fun.....the more, the merrier!

Even if they’re not exactly Christmas traditions, share your favorite festive dishes at our pot luck lunch. There will be a sign-up sheet in the narthex. But if you forget to sign up, join us anyway. We always have room for YOU at our table! Set-up or clean-up help is always appreciated. If you need transportation, call the office at 442-1018 and we will help secure you a ride.

Please sign up on the Narthex bulletin board!!! We hope to have a variety of dishes to sample, and by signing up in advance you will help everyone else with planning and we’ll avoid ending up with ten chip & dip platters! If you forget to sign up, come anyway. Have you ever been to a party where there weren’t enough munchies to go around? Certainly not here! There is always room for YOU at our table.

New and updated guidelines and other helpful information for our Worship Assistants – ushers, greeters, acolytes, readers, communion assistants, assisting ministers and altar care volunteers - will be available in December. CHRIST IN OUR HOME DEVOTIONAL BOOKS The Christ in Our Home devotional books are now available in a large-print edition. They can be picked up from the table in the Narthex.

ADVENT MORNING PRAYER Wednesday, December 7 and 21 at 9:00 AM in the Prayer Room Advent beckons to us to be still. Be alert. Open up. Receive. Join us for Advent Morning Prayer on two Wednesdays in December. We will light our candles and spend a half hour or so in prayer, meditation and reflection as we “Prepare the way of the Lord” in our lives. Emmanuel, you are the light of the world, You are the one for whom all the peoples of the earth wait. In this season of expectancy, open our eyes to be aware of your presence. Come in the glory of your saving light and shine upon our pathways.
