PINKY’S CORNER

Reinvention of Atlantic City By Pinky Kravitz

N A RECENT INTERVIEW WITH TOM CARVER, the executive director of the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA), he said there needs to be a reinvention of Atlantic City. He also stated that we must diligently work together to make Atlantic City a resort destination — one that is safe and clean and exciting. For years, back in the days when Jim Kennedy was the CRDA’s executive director, an architect was employed to come up with a plan for Gardner’s Basin. A beautiful rendering was created and even painted on the wall of the CRDA office. It had an exciting concept, but the mayor at that time said there needed to be a concentration on housing and not Gardner’s Basin. So the plan was put in the closet like so many other plans that look good on paper, but couldn’t get the interests of the administration in office. However, Carver said this is the time to get it done and develop Gardner’s Basin to its full extent. Last week, Kevin DeSanctis, Revel Entertainment’s chief executive officer, withdrew his application for funds from the state’s new tax incentive program that would allow Revel to get 75-percent back from the sales and room taxes that they generate for the state of New Jersey. This would be a sum of up to $300 million over a 20-year period. DeSanctis said that he plans to reapply after Morgan Stanley sells its $1 billion share of Revel to a new partner. The money would be used to revitalize the inlet section of Atlantic City. The plan, which was unveiled in the local daily newspaper, envisions dividing the area into four districts — casino, resort, workforce and waterfront. More than 800 residential units would be built in three separate districts, which is part of a plan ultimately to build 6,500 new housing units, 200,000 gross square feet of retail space, and 15,000 parking spaces. A boutique hotel would be constructed next to the casino and behind its entertainment section. The plan calls for restructuring the Boardwalk and the building of a parallel bike path in addition to replenishing the area’s beaches. According to the story, DeSanctis said of his plan for the improvements to the inlet: “I can give you 50 reasons why this won’t happen. But you’ve got to focus on the one reason it can get done, or else you’ll never get anything done. Carver noted that there is an excellent area devoid of any development at Georgia Avenue at the bay — the site of the former Dual Fuel Company. The South Jersey Transportation Authority owns a big block adjacent to the site. Putting the two together would provide an excellent area for development of housing and retail and restaurant units along the bay front. This is the kind of far-reaching thinking we need in Atlantic City at this time. I know a lot of you would say it’s a far-off dream that it will never happen, but obviously Carver thinks differently. He said it must happen in order to make Atlantic City what it can be — a diverse community with a variety of attractions, nice homes for its residents and one of the safest communities in the nation. Join us on Facebook:

It is time for this type of thinking to become a reality and it can only be done with the cooperation of Atlantic City’s mayor and city council, the casino industry, the CRDA and the state. If all entities work together, it could make the dream of many, a reinvented Atlantic City, come true.

New Jitneys!

This columnist wrote about the city’s new jitneys in a January column. Last week, I received pictures and an update on the new jitneys. AC Weekly editor Jeff Schwachter posted the following on the acweekly. com Web site after I told him about it. “According to Tom Woodruff, president of the Atlantic City Jitney Association (ACJA), the ‘first [jitney] prototype [was due to arrive last weekend and be placed in service this past] Monday.’ “According to Woodruff, the new ‘green’ jitneys ‘will be powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).’ “Woodruff tells Kravitz, ‘If all goes well with the field testing, the production schedule will begin in June, with 40 new vehicles arriving around the beginning of July. Delivery of the remaining fleet should be completed by October.’ “As Kravitz reported back in January, 190 new ‘green’ jitneys will begin arriving on the streets of Atlantic City, a change not only from their baby-blue color, but also how they are run. “Kravitz also noted that the ‘concept of CNG-powered vehicles is relatively new to New Jersey. The ACJA has partnered with the Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA) to fuel these vehicles; the ACJA will also be building a pumping facility that can be used not only by its fleet, but also by other municipalities and businesses that wish to invest in this green technology.’ “Kravitz added, ‘The new vehicles will cost $54,000 each, and half of that sum will be paid by the drivers over a seven-year period. The other half of the funds necessary for the purchase of the new jitneys was a part of a federal stimulus grant that was given to transit authorities in various states to provide money to aid and assist private carriers.’ Above, you can see what the new jitneys look like. n

The rock band HIM played last Thursday, May 6, at the House of Blues at Showboat.

Q: How was the show? Victoria Budesa Manahawkin, N.J. A: The show was awesome. We ended up in a box next to one of my favorite local celebs, Bam Margera, and got to party with them after!

David Chapman Brigantine, N.J. A: This might have been the worst band I have ever seen. I felt like I was trapped inside a Hot Topic store for two hours.

Elise Branciforti Linwood, N.J. A: HIM? Who? I don’t know him, oh that’s the name of the band?? What? I’m so confused. I just came with my friend.

ATING RULES AND SOCIAL protocol seem less distinct now than decades ago — and that’s definitely a positive thing. That said, there’s an event taking place at in Atlantic City at the Taj’s Ego Lounge on Saturday (May 15) that should be as exhilarating as it is expressive of the breakdown of social boundaries. Hosted by actress and two-time former Playboy cover model Cindy Margolis, the Cougars & Cubs Dating Game will feature “cougars” (loosely defined as women over the age of 40) competing for the affection of “cubs” (or 20-something men). The event will coincide with the launch of a new orangeinfused vodka called Ketel One Oranje. “I think the Cubs-Cougar Dating Game is born of the fact that there are so many younger men out there who want to be with an attractive older woman — not just for the ‘fantasy’ but for the experience and knowledge that an older woman can possess,” Margolis tells AC Weekly. “Personally, age doesn’t mean that much to me. Whether the guy is young or old is not important. It’s how he treats me. “[The game] helps to show that age is just a number,” she adds. “A healthy mind and body can overcome an age difference in a heartbeat. I’ve dated guys in their 20s who acted like they were 70 and, take my word for it, it’s not a real turn on. If a man treats a lady right, respects her and loves to have a good time, age means absolutely nothing.” Star of the No. 1-rated Fox Reality Channel show Seducing Cindy, Margolis will help match up couples in a format that includes a cougar asking questions of three cubs in each of several rounds. The two most popular couples as voted by the audience will receiving a dinner date to Trattoria Il Mulino Restaurant and VIP treatment at the Casbah nightclub — both located at the Taj. “There’s a basic Dating Game format, but I have the option to stray away from the format as I see fit and take the insanity up a few notches,” says Margolis, whose second Playboy photo shoot (June 2008) was at age 42. “It will be a blast for the people who come out to watch it. Plus, I’ll be signing autographs, taking pictures with the fans and having a great time myself.” The idea for Cougars & Cubs came about after Seducing Cindy aired to much acclaim. Fox subsequently changed the

channel’s format and eliminated all the “reality” shows, so Margolis took the idea on the road with similar success. “I did the first one at a New Orleans casino a few months ago and the reaction was terrific,” she says. “It can get very interactive, with guys and girls from the audience all wanting to get on stage and try their luck.” Margolis’ manager, Neil Cirucci, says the ABC-TV show Cougar Town (Wednesdays, 9:30pm) starring Courtney Cox has done a lot to sort of popularize the idea of older women dating younger men. “That show really kind of put it through the stratosphere,” says Cirucci. “It showed the side where you could be a cougar and actually be cool, like Demi Moore [who’s 47] and Ashton Kutcher [her 32-year-old husband]. Of course the other ‘cougar’ connotation has been the old broads who just want to get laid with younger guys, so I think there can be a sort of a bad side to it too. We’re trying to stick with the good side.” n

Booking a former American president and vice president wasn’t as simple a process for Belluscio as scheduling Joan Rivers or Weird Al Yankovic. “You don’t just call an agent asking for a [tour] routing sheet, she explains. “It’s a lot more complicated than that. There are a lot of layers to deal with. One of which is called the United States Secret Service. Neither Belluscio nor Frawley would get into the specifics of dealing with the law enforcement agency that protects the former and current firstand second-families. “They are a very thorough organization, Frawley says simply. “They have everything planned. Nor would they say what kind of money the Hilton is spending on the series. However, published reports say Clinton earns between $175,000 and $200,000 per speaking engagement — sometimes more — so this is obviously an expensive experiment. Although each of the speakers the Hilton has lined up has been a polarizing figure, Frawley doesn’t believe the casino is gambling with this series. “I don’t see any risk in it at all, the casino chief says. “For a program like this, this is the right time and the right place. The quality of our speakers is going to be extremely difficult to surpass. Frawley adds, “No one has been negative about this, regardless of their political views. We need to come up with new forms of adult entertainment in Atlantic City, and this is certainly adult entertainment. Atlantic City’s last presidential visit was in 1978, when Jimmy Carter delivered a keynote address at Boardwalk Hall. Two years earlier, President Gerald Ford made a campaign stop on the Boardwalk to deliver a speech at the annual New Jersey Education Association convention. Last year, former Vice President Al Gore was at Bally’s Atlantic City to deliver a speech in support of former Gov. Jon Corzine at New Jersey’s Democratic State Committee convention. n

HEY’RE THINKING OUTSIDE THE box and inside the Beltway at the Atlantic City Hilton this summer. In between standard casino fare like Meat Loaf, Cheech and Chong and Eddie Money, the city’s smallest casino has scheduled some of the biggest heavyweights on the American political landscape to headline a “Summer Speakers Series, led by former President Bill Clinton and former Vice President Dick Cheney. It will be the first time a former or sitting American president will visit an Atlantic City casino since the gaming era began 32 years ago. “We’re looking at this as something that’s truly adult entertainment, Hilton chief operating officer Michael Frawley says. “There is nothing wrong with political awareness. This is ‘information entertainment.’ Frawley was quick to note that the casino isn’t taking political sides with this unique series of special events, nor is it trying to push some hidden political agenda. The Hilton, one of several Atlantic City casinos pushed to the financial brink by the recession and increased gaming competition, is simply trying to raise the bar on what is considered “casino entertainment in the 21st century. The series begins June 24, when Fox News conservative commentators Bill O’Reilly and Glenn Beck will share the stage. Clinton will become the first American president — former or sitting — to visit an Atlantic City casino when he takes the stage of the 1,200-seat Hilton Theater July 23. Conservative commentator Ann Coulter will square off against former Clinton adviser and liberal commentator James Carville on Aug. 21, while Cheney will wrap up the program on Sept. 17. The Hilton isn’t sure of the topics each event will embrace, although Frawley indicated current events would almost certainly be among the subjects discussed and debated. Nor does he expect the speakers to attack the opposing party on stage. “I don’t think they’ll go there because it really isn’t necessary, he says. For Tina Belluscio, regional director of entertainment for the Hilton, putting this series together has been the culmination of a years-long effort. “I’ve been trying to do something like this for years, but [the politicians] kept saying ‘no’ without giving a reason, she says. “My opinion is that they felt that gambling and politics just didn’t blend.

HERE’S BEEN A SUBTLE TREND lately in Atlantic City poker rooms to slowly up the level of hands needed for the bad beat jackpot to pay off. But even with the highest level needed in the city (a level set just last week), the Tropicana saw a $100,000 bad beat jackpot hit. Bad beat jackpots are paid when a very high hand is beaten by yet a higher hand. The progressive jackpot, which often rises into several hundred thousand dollars, is then split between the players at the table. The split is usually one half for the person who got beat, one quarter for the person who beat him, and one quarter split among the rest of the players at the table, though splits vary in individual rooms. The idea was a smash hit when widely introduced in A.C. about two years ago, because it meant you could cash in on the jackpot even if you weren’t involved with the hand. You can always expect big crowds in a room where the jackpot is getting high. When bad beats first started, they were usually tied to a full house (albeit a very high full house, usually aces over jacks or better) losing to a higher hand. Now, most rooms have upped that to four of a kind losing to another four of a kind or better. Late last week, the Tropicana upped their minimum hand to four eights or better getting beat. “Many customers thought it was now too tough to hit,” says Scott Griffin, poker manager for the Trop. “But [Sunday] 10 players at a $1-$2 No Limit table and everyone else in the room could see first hand that it is still possible. In fact, out of the 27 times the jackpot has hit, 17 jackpots have been four eights or better.” In this case, four queens lost out to a straight flush. Player Jonathan Cirmi was holding pocket queens when the flop came out as queen of clubs, king of clubs and queen of hearts. That’s a killer hand at four queens, but there was one little problem. Player Devin Stoll was sitting on ace of clubs, jack of clubs — one card off the Royal Flush. The turn card? A 10 of clubs and he hit the royal. Cirmi, despite losing a $498 pot, col-

The Tropicana, by the way, wasn’t the only casino to see a bad beat hit last weekend. The Borgata also saw its bad beat hit Saturday on a $1-$2 No Limit table. Nine people were at the table, as four fives were beaten by a straight flush. The losing hand, held by Calvin Ledford of Matawan, was paid $21,187. The winning hand took home the pot plus $10,594. The remaining players each

The Borgata has paid out nearly $6.5 million in bad beat jackpots since starting in December 2008. The Trop has paid about $3.3 million since July 2008. As of this writing, bad beat jackpots have climbed to over $340,000 at the Trump Taj Mahal poker room, and over $200,000 at Bally’s and Caesars’ poker rooms. Unless they hit this week, you can expect some pretty crowded poker rooms in town this weekend. One other note. The World Series of Poker (WSOP) satellite event at Harrah’s Resort began Wednesday, May 12, and is the last major satellite event available before the Las Vegas WSOP starts May 28. Two events, event 11 (a $1,000 + $150 Deep Stack No Limit tournament May 22) and event 16 (the May 27 main event: $1035 + $65) both offer chances to win $10,000 seats to the WSOP Main Event in July. Hot Moms and Pizza By Whitney Ullman

HEN I THINK MOTHER’S DAY, I think of flowers, dinner, family, bonding, life, love and, of course, mom. Moms throughout time have been stereotyped as a stay-at-home woman who cooks, cleans, and takes care of the kids. Now don’t get me wrong, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that — it’s a full time job to be a mom. It’s just that nowadays, so many moms balance the work/home lifestyle and are great at it, but also have the modern-day societal pressure to look “hot” doing it. Last week, to celebrate Mother’s Day in Atlantic City, there was a “Hot Moms” contest presented by Boogie Nights at Resorts. I know it may sound offensive to some, but I like the idea of it. The concept celebrates a beautiful woman and points out that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So don’t feel discouraged if you think you are not a hottie; you just better enter that contest next year! In the meantime, with all of this hotness going around and women feeling pressured to always look good and maintain a healthy weight, now we have some hot mamas running around town too. When women are getting older, feeling better and looking hotter, of course the Join us on Facebook:

Don’t let society’s labels sway your decisions when it comes to anything, especially love. But if you are a hot cougar and you want to meet someone then you may be in luck because this Saturday night from 9-11pm, Cindy Margolis, who

But nowadays if you fall into that older woman/younger man scenario, there is a term that society labels the woman and that would be a “cougar.” In case you’ve never heard that term, according to a few sources it’s a woman over the age of 40 who dates males 10 years or more younger than herself. I actually think it’s pretty funny and I see nothing wrong with it. If you find the love of your life and he’s younger, then good for you. And you know what, if you find the love or your life and he’s older, well then good for you too!

Plus Margolis will also be available for photos. While on the subject of hot, make sure to drop by one of the hottest Atlantic City pizza joints in town, Tony Boloney’s, for the world’s largest pizza-eating competition — the “Pizza Slaughter Fest” — this Saturday, May 15, starting at noon. (See p. 8 for more information.)

The two-year reigning Wing Bowl champion, Jason “Super Squibb,” will be competing to eat through the entire pizza menu at Tony Boloney’s. All of the contestants will have to eat each of 30 signature slices on their menu and guys, let me tell you, they have some funky, yet yummy and tasty, pizzas. I’ll be judging the competition and I hope to see you there at this fun community event. Come out to Tony Boloney’s at 300 Oriental Ave. in Atlantic City. There will be live music, lots of vendors, and great people. Visit the Web site for more information or to sign up as a contestant. n

Touring Boardwalk Hall’s massive pipe organ, the largest in the world, is a climb through the very heart of the historic arena.

HERE ARE TWO TYPES OF guided tours in the world. The first, and more traditional, is a rigid and carefully scripted affair where the guides say things like “let’s stay together people” and “OK people, we’re moving, we’re moving” a lot. If you’re lucky, you get a few brief glimpses of what you came to see and some snippets of information you didn’t know. Then there are the types of tours that Harry Bellangy conducts in Atlantic City. Bellangy gives guided tours of the historic pipe organs at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall. Correction: Bellangy gives guided tours of the two humongous pipe organs that sprawl over the massive Boardwalk Hall. That includes the Midmer-Losh Pipe Organ built from 1929 to 1932 in the hall’s main auditorium and containing more than 33,000 pipes. Those pipes, some reaching 64 feet in length, are carefully packed into chamber and small rooms within the very walls of Boardwalk Hall, with thousands of working parts spread from the basement to the ceiling. And Bellangy will make sure you get the time to see every bit of it. You’ll crawl among the pipes, squeezing into spaces that were clearly designed by people who had not yet invented fast food. You’ll take a trip to the basement in an elevator that appears old enough to have been the prototype for all elevators, and you’ll get to actually sit at the beautiful organist’s console, with enough switches, pedals and keyboards to make you wonder how many guys you needed to play it (just one, it turns out). Not once will you be blocked or roped off from all there is to see. “I tell people coming in that they have to wear comfortable shoes and comfortable clothes,” Bellangy says. “We’re not like other places where you can’t touch anything and you have to stand behind a line. When we get to the organist’s console, for example, people get really nervous and they’ll ask, ‘Can I sit there?’ I tell them, ‘Of course you can sit there. Come on in.’ “Obviously a lot of this isn’t handicap accessible, but we will work with you the best we can to make sure you see as much

as you can,” Bellangy adds. “We want everybody to see this.” That type of hands-on touring has given the guided tours, conducted on the first and third Tuesdays of the month, a real reputation among music and organ lovers. The tours have attracted musicians and students at music academies from all over the world. “We’ve actually gotten quite a reputation for our hospitality,” says Carl Loeser, the curator for the organs. “People are amazed at how much they get to see.” And let’s get one thing clear, there’s a lot to see. In fact, the tour starts off kind of fooling you into thinking that the organs aren’t that big. After seeing a portable organists’ console (that still has to be moved with a forklift) you move into the Adrian Phillips Ballroom, the home of the “little” Ballroom Kimball Pipe Organ built in 1931, which has about 4,150 pipes and is undergoing extensive renovations. The pipes are tucked into spaces on either side of the large ballroom stage. In both organs, the pipes offer a stunning, almost incomprehensible array of musical instruments available to the organist. Some pipes have reeds, like a clarinet, while others are fluted like whistles. Some, however, look like long trumpets. In fact, there is even a percussion section. Yes, the organist could push a key and get everything from a bass drum to castanets to beat. The drums, even a tom-tom, are clearly visible with drum-

sticks controlled by elaborate gizmos. “The ballroom organ was actually designed with the thought of the ballroom being a movie house,” Bellangy says. “There is a projection room in here. It has everything the organist could want to fully score a silent movie. The only thing it doesn’t have is sound effects, such as a door bell, which some of these organs had.” But what it also has is miles of intricate wiring and control boards, which operated the elaborate instrument. In that sense, the organs are museum pieces of antiquated electronics. That aspect of both organs, however, are destined to become nothing but display pieces. “It’s an amazing testament to the ingenuity they had,” Loeser says.” The organ is controlled with electrical mechanics and pneumatics. And it’s very intense. None of the wiring, for example, is color coded, and there are thousands of switches that had to be set by hand. “The good thing, however, is none of that has any affect on the sound of the organ,” he says. “Today, a computer chip can do all of it. Rooms full of these switches and wires can be replaced. And that’s where we are in the restoration. We are expecting a new computer control board soon, and then we’ll actually be able to have this organ playing again.” A quick note; neither of the two organs have been playable since the renovation of Boardwalk Hall in the late 1990s. The larger organ was only partially playable

before the renovation as whole sections of controls were damaged by a flood in the early 1940s. Both organs are being refurbished and the goal is to get both fully playable again. After the jaunty tour of the ballroom organ, however, you embark on the full size organ tour in the hall’s main auditorium and trust us, you ain’t seen nothing yet. The 33,000 pipes are spread out in pipe chambers built throughout the hall. Bellangy doesn’t insist you see them all — the one chamber in the ceiling reached by a very tiny ladder would be particularly scary — but he will let you crawl through the main chambers behind the stage. Each chamber is covered by open decorative grates facing into the auditorium. The only volume control was the use of shutters opening and closing the grates. In fact, Bellangy is so knowledgeable about the hall itself, the tour could easily be described as a Boardwalk Hall tour. Through it all, however, there are the pipes, some even made of wood. Right next to pipes as large as industrial gutters are some only a few inches long. More amazing, Bellangy seems to have them memorized, pulling smaller ones out of their settings to tell you the exact note and pitch. And yes, you can hold them as well. The tour also hits the hall’s basement, where massive blowers, more than 600-horsepower’s worth, control the air through the pipes. While full restoration of the main organ could be years away, the idea of ever getting all 33,000-plus pipes and instruments (the main organ also has a percussion section) working is one pipe dream that would be truly amazing. “Most of the recordings we have of the main organ only utilize a small part of the pipes,” Bellangy says. “This instrument has 449 ranks [365 flues, 84 reeds in a rank] and 337 stops and much more. To hear this played as it was meant to be played would just take your breath away.” The tours are run through the Atlantic City Convention Hall Organ Society and cost $20 per person. All proceeds benefit the restoration projects. Visit for information. n see more online @

The Bao of Cooking R.I. Café offers ‘real’ Chinese food in Ocean City By Frank Gabriel R.I. Cafe owners Bao and Sandy Chen

Union Square in Manhattan. Reflecting back on his arduous, nearly 20 years of work experience, and how it served as preparation for this opportunity, Sandy nods appreciatively and says, “He paid attention!” Don’t let the baby-faced Bao’s quiet, unassuming demeanor fool you. Beneath that apparently smooth exterior boils a great, sizzling cauldron of relentless energy. Sandy tells us that the restaurant’s newly refurbished décor was all fashioned by her husband, including carpentry, drapery and ornamental ethnic accessories. But front of the house is not even on the radar when compared to this guy’s culinary skills. His style, according to Sandy, is “very healthy food,” terminology rarely associ-

ated with American Chinese restaurants. He also comes to this naturally, with a father who is a respected professional cook. That sort of legacy usually means good things in this industry. There is an accepted adage among food cognoscenti that to encounter real Chinese food in this country one must visit either San Francisco or New York City. The Baos prove the exception to that rule. Like, for instance, their Szechuan wontons, a dozen pretty little bundles ladled with a Thai-style peanut sauce that really packs an incipient dose of spicy chile burn. Or their house special soup, called Soup for Everything, which includes sliced roast pork, white meat chicken, shrimp, mixed vegetables and wontons

HEN LITTLE IVAN BAO WANTS a delicious mid-afternoon snack, all he has to do is take a few short steps into the kitchen of the R.I. Café in Ocean City and see his father, the chef/owner. The mischievous seven-year old, along with younger sibling Ryan, are probably among the youngest persons on the planet to have a restaurant named in their honor. Mom Sandy and dad Bao (his first name does not translate to English) have operated the side street fronting facility for just under half a year. They initially visited locally September of last year, inspecting the location. Moving quickly, they signed a lease on Oct. 13, moved in on Nov. 13 and began serving the public on Dec. 15. The pair, married since 2002, present a refreshing, post-modern portrait of the American Dream. Both natives of the southern China province of Hunan, they eventually emigrated here, meeting in Brooklyn. Bao arrived at just over 16 years of age, after having already spent a couple of years working as an assistant cook. Taking a traditional route to this career, like many aspiring chefs, he opted to toil long, grueling hours learning at the beck and call of various kitchen mentors. Sandy, who has been in America for a little more than a decade, does all the talking for the still youthful couple, as her husband speaks very limited English. Most recently, his employer for the last six years was a well-known restaurant called Baby Buddha on 14th Street near

in a chicken-based broth. In general, R.I. brings an authenticity and earnestness to their menu that is extraordinarily rare. They also promise low sugar/sodium and none of the devil’s plaything ingredient known as MSG. Asked about his preferred items, Bao appropriately suggests Kung Bao chicken. This classic Szechuan formula consists of lightly breaded poultry combined with chunks of red and green pepper in a fiery orange/red sauce, topped with salty, chunky peanuts. His favorite seafood suggestion is deepfried jumbo shrimp with ginger and scallions in a sweet soy sauce. We’ve also sampled a hearty Mongolian beef, stir-fried strips of meat with multiple onions in a dark brown blend, all soft and melted, releasing their tasty natural sugars. Adventurous diners might want to sample their camphor and tea leaf smoked duck. The bone-in bird is marinated, steamed, then roasted until crispy and served with Bao’s special sauce. The Baos seem committed not only to their new business, but to the community as well. They’ve made their home in Ocean City, only a few short blocks from their restaurant. This means lots of time spent together, close to the family home, working in their modest eatery. And plenty of chances for a happy, hungry little boy to get his talented dad to plate him up some food. The kid just doesn’t know how good he’s got it. n

If Smokey Robinson wrote “My Girl,” why did the Temptations record it instead of the Miracles? Was this a case of Berry Gordy giving their song away to another — Penny Smith artist to get the hit? It is true that Berry, mostly with Holland-Dozier-Holland songs, would experiment with different artists recording the same song, and then release the version that he thought could be a hit. This is not the case with “My Girl,” which was written by Smokey specifically for the Temptations. He knew that if he found the right vehicle for David Ruffin’s voice, the group would have a smash hit. And he was right — “My Girl” was the first time the Temps hit No. 1.

5 Questions With ... Ben Bailey The popular stand-up comic and ‘Cash Cab’ host appears at Trump Marina Saturday night By Ray Schweibert

ONG BEFORE HIS TAXICAB WAS hailed by unsuspecting, would-be game-show contestants, Ben Bailey was hailed as a stand-up comedian at many of the best-known festivals and biggest-name comedy outlets in the nation. For about the past 15 years he’s honed his humorous craft in New York City, not far from where he grew up in Morris County, New Jersey. In a sort of circuitous twist of fate, he became the host (and a commercially licensed NYC taxi driver) of the hit Discovery Channel shows Cash Cab and (later) Cash Cab: After Dark, which would earn him a Daytime Emmy Award for outstanding game show host. Bailey has also appeared on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, the Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn, Last Call with Carson Daly, Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn and in several films, including a featured role in Spiderman 2. Bailey has had his own Comedy Central special, co-wrote and directed an independent comedy called Meet Me at Ray’s, and will be recording a new one-hour special for Comedy Central on July 10. Bailey returns to The Shell at Trump Marina on Saturday, May 15, as part of the Trump Comedy Series. Doors open 7pm and the show is at 8pm. Tickets are $28.

Generally speaking Cash Cab fans are pretty nice people.

How surprised are you by the show’s popularity? I read where the original contract in 2005 was for 40 episodes and since then you’ve done over 250. We’ve done 320 and are getting ready to do 40 more. Yes, I mean I put my heart and soul into it and really worked on it as hard as I could. Everybody who’s worked on the show has tried to make it as fun and entertaining as we could make it. That’s the nice thing about working in TV and film — at least in my experience — everyone’s working together toward the same goal to make it the best it can be. But even with that said you still don’t really know what’s going to happen, so I’d have to say we were pretty surprised by what we got out of this little show. The “Little Cab That Could,” is what did you actually have to get a New York City we’re calling it. taxicab-driving license to host it? Wynonna’s Latest ‘Chapter’

Where: Harrah’s Resort When: Saturday, May 15, 9pm How Much: $40-$65

Eclectic country diva plays Atlantic City Saturday, talks modern country radio and Lady Gaga. By Lori Hoffman

OUNTRY MUSIC TOP 40 radio has swung so far to the pop side, obsessed with the latest hot artist, there is no room for the brilliant blend of traditionalism, roots-rock, blues, swing and yes, pop, that defines one of country music’s greatest singers and interpretive artists ever, Wynonna Judd. If you think I’ve gone overboard with my praise, download Sing: Chapter 1, Wynonna’s latest album, released last year. After listening to her stunning skill in interpreting songs that have influenced her over the decades, a diverse collection that includes Bill Wither’s “Ain’t No Sunshine,” Hank Williams’ “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry,” Merle Haggard’s “Are the Good Times Really Over for Good,” Sippie Wallace’s “Women Be Wise” and the elegant pop of the 1952 standard “When I Fall In Love” and Bacharach/David’s “Anyone Who Has A Heart,” you’ll probably agree that Wynonna belongs in the same category as Patsy Cline and Bonnie Raitt. Not only are the pipes magnificent, but the emotional power of her ballads, the perfect phrasing, and the stomp-yourfeel fun of the uptempo numbers make this album an instant classic ala Willie Nelson’s Stardust. Wynonna headlines at Harrah’s this Saturday, May 15, and this fall teams up with her mother Naomi for the Judds farewell tour. While on break from performing, Wynonna chatted with Atlantic City Weekly about her current tour, the Judds reunion and the state of country music.

‘It’s like the Lady Gaga thing. What is that? First of all, can someone tell me — is that a man or a woman?’

You are celebrating your 25th anniversary as a recording artist. Can you believe it? I can and I can’t. I think because of the integrity with which I’ve tried to maneuver [my career], I’m really grateful — freaking A, I’m awesome. I made it through. As a champion, heck yeah, I’m thrilled. As an artist, I’m like, “How the heck did I get away with as much as I’ve gotten away with?” I’m up singing in Connecticut with Kenny Rogers, Lionel Richie, Smokey Robinson, Dolly. I’m thinking, “How did I get here?” Or I go and do something with Sting then something with Patti LaBelle. This is crazy but it works, because of my gift. I’ve been really lucky to sing for the military families. I’ve sung for four presidents. It’s like the American dream, Miss America thing. It’s wacky, but I love it. I love that I’m still here. The older I get the sassier I am. I worry less what people think and enjoy myself more. That comes from age and experience.

Sing: Chapter 1 is an amazing album, featuring songs that have inspired you. What do you love about these songs? We can start with Bonnie [Raitt, who recorded “Women Be Wise”]. Bonnie used to dedicate that song to me and this album is about my she-roes and my heroes and paying homage to them. It was literally picking out points in my life when I had experiences with these people. Merle Haggard with George Jones was my very first concert as a child. These are personal stories, snapshots from my life. Bill Withers’ [“Ain’t No Sunshine”], I remember when that song came out.

Are casino audiences different? These are people that don’t normally come to shows. They are in the building to gamble and drink and play and forget their miserable lives. I see these characters and think, “When was the last time you bought a Wynonna record?” I know going in that these are not people in the fan club for the most part. So, don’t tell jokes about my mom. Don’t make them laugh, but they need to laugh, they just lost their mortgage. I definitely go in with a different attitude.

PiL (Public Image Ltd.) Where: The Borgata, Atlantic City When: Saturday, May 15, 9pm How Much: $55

I think Beyonce is fine. I love her voice.

ROVOCATIVE HUMORISTS ARE in short supply in pop music. Vocalist-songwriter John Lydon has always been one of the best at stirring the pot in an amusing manner, whether he was fronting the seminal punk band the Sex Pistols (as Johnny Rotten) or the irreverent Public Image Ltd. (PiL), which recently reunited after a 17-year hiatus. PiL will make a rare appearance Saturday, May 15, at the Borgata. The charismatic Lydon phoned from Boston to talk to Atlantic City Weekly about the waning art of live performance in rock, the effect of American Idol and if there really is no future for you.

M A Y 1 3 , 2 0 1 0 / A C W E E K LY. C O M

There is such a dearth of recording artists who connect with the audience these days. Have you noticed? I know exactly what you’re saying and I couldn’t agree more. I feel 54-years young because of these performers, if you want to call them that, who are killing live music. A generation ago there were a number of bands that would exude a palpable sense of danger and unpredictability during shows. Now, when you go to some shows you can’t help but wonder if you’ve been cheated. [Laughs] Those good old days when the fan would take a risk and see a band, which could be good or bad; I miss those days. Today there is no risk. It’s

all predictable. Can we blame it all on eight years of George W. Bush? I don’t think so. I think it’s the modern world. Nobody expects anything from anybody in this age. We live in an age in which Simon Cowell of American Idol is edgy. [Sinister laughter] Well, what a tradition that [American Idol] is. It’s a shame. Does your old Sex Pistols refrain ‘there’s no future’ apply to pop music? What was implied was that if you don’t take [over] your own future, you might not have a future. That’s what is happening. People are just sitting back and they don’t realize if they don’t contribute they get nothing in return. Fame seems to be the only driving force for everyone today in this so-called revolution. What makes me laugh is that this is the safest form of revolution. I like the idea of Rage Against the Machine, but it seems as if they have strategies. Didn’t the Sex Pistols have strategies? The Sex Pistols were organized chaos. The difference between me and all of these bands is that I’m for real. You can’t manufacture what I’m about. Sooner or later all of these revolutionary acts following the Black Flag manifesto will accept their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. Nobody is going to induct me into anything. Inducting someone

into something sounds like some sort of stage. Why can’t we play in front of his anal abuse. I don’t want to go into the audience? But I did hear that Beyonce was wearing a Sex Pistols shirt. I see no difficulties with that. I think it’s easier than ever to be a free thinker. I could do it all over again. I could show people that you don’t have to be on American Idol to be a star. Speaking of which, did you see that David Arquette [Archuleta], that sweet little boy from American Idol, who sang “Imagine” really well, was found in a gay club? Oh, shock [and] horror! Oh, give it a break. When I was young, the one place you could go and not be attacked was a gay club and they played the best music. This country is a mess.

You’ve reunited with the Pistols and PiL. Will either band ever release a new album? There will be definitely be a PiL album. What about the Sex Pistols? I don’t feel like writing for that band.

Why? There are some personality issues with [the Sex Pistols] and there is some laziness with some of the members that annoys me. I love that band. It’s my inheritance. Drone Wars

‘Iron Man 2’ gets sleepy in the middle, but delivers the hardware at the finish. By Lori Hoffman

RON MAN 2 HAS KICKED OFF the summer moviegoing season as an acceptable action flick that creates a stiff wind, but never achieves “blowyou-away” status. The best thing it has going for it is a bad-boy villain to face off against Robert Downey Jr.’s likable egomaniac Tony Stark in the crumbled, but still potent visage of Mickey Rourke. Rourke plays Ivan Vanko, a tattooed, bird-loving, vodka-drinking Russian scientist who looks more like a Russian mobster. Vanko is mighty peeved at the Stark clan, a family feud that began with Tony Stark’s father Howard Stark (John Slattery of Mad Men) screwing over Vanko’s scientist father back in the ’70s. While Vanko plots his revenge using his father’s blueprints, Tony Stark is dealing with his own problems. The U.S. government, led by the officious Senator Stern (Garry Shandling), wants to take Iron Man 2 ★★★★ Directed by Jon Favreau; rated PG13

eminent domain over his Iron Man technology. Stark’s also dealing with a serious health issue and the backstabbing plans of his leading competitor for government weapon contracts, Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell). Hammer hires Vanko to create his own Iron Man technology, an army of drones. Another layer of this dense plot involves a super secret organization, led by Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury, who wants Iron Man on his team. That’s a lot of plot to dish out for a comic book action flick and the weight of the exposition bogs down the film several times to the point of boredom. However, once the film finally flies past the boring bits, the finish delivers the big guns in the form of a drone war shoot ’em up versus Iron Man and his now suited-up sidekick, James “Rhodey” Rhodes (Don Cheadle). Eventually Vanko flies to the party for the big CGI finale. While this is mostly a boys-and-theirtoys endeavor, Gwyneth Paltrow is back as Pepper Potts —with less to do this time around — as Scarlett Johansson takes up valuable screen time as buff secret agent Natasha Romanoff. Director Jon Favreau, working with a

film presented the usual compliment of nurturing mothers and offspring, and the usual message about how mankind needs to stop polluting and help preserve this precious resource and its wondrous bounty of life. Directors Jacques Perrin and Jacques Cluzaud (Winged Migration) present incredible photography, in particular the whale footage, and everybody’s favorite, frolicking dolphins. The world’s largest dolphins are Orcas, a.k.a. killer whales, and they are here too. A Dive In The Disney folks brought Animal Planet- scene where the Orcas chase baby sea style documentary footage to the big lions might be too intense for very young children, but older kids and their parents screen with last year’s Earth. The screenplay by actor/writer Justin Theroux (Tropic Thunder), doesn’t do anything to prevent the sag in the middle, but he has a nice touch with the snarky comedic persona of Iron Man and the action picks up in time for the finish. Hopefully, the summer will provide some flicks that exceed expectations. For now we can enjoy the pleasures provided by the Downey-Rourke showdown.
