The Man in the Corner W By Pinky Kravitz

HILE CLEANING OUT A CLOSET IN MY house, I found a newspaper story that was written in 1972 entitled, “The Man in the Corner,” and a story with that same title in a South Jersey TV magazine written 10 years earlier. I thought you might enjoy reading what was written 37 and 47 years ago, and I combined the two stories in this column. The first is from 1972: “Corners are generally the places where you will find a conglomeration of everything. Women use the corner to put their vacuum cleaners, brooms and cleaning utensils; men to store their golf clubs, tennis rackets and galoshes; children use it for their toys, trash and dirty clothes; teachers put their troublesome children in the corner — but the people of South Jersey use it to hear informative and provocative conversation. “Every night at 9pm, many area folks turn off their TV sets, turn on their radios and spend three hours with a man who’s been sitting in the corner. They hear a discussion on just about every subject; they hear the political scene dissected from every angle; they hear complaints about everything from dogs, garbage and too much sex to the weather, cultural activities and too little sex. They become aroused and get angry. They are entertained and laugh. They are enticed to think about the problems of the day. Night after night, Monday to Friday, they listen and participate in the medium called two-way talk radio. “Pinky Kravitz is the man who has been in the corner well over 3,500 nights. He has served as a community catalyst in accomplishing many needed projects. He has provided aid and comfort to victims of various tragedies; he has helped to raise thousands of dollars for worthwhile charities and organizations; he has provided a forum for public discussion on just about any subject the listeners want to comment on. “Kravitz was born in Martinsburg, West Virginia, on July 11, 1927. He moved to Atlantic City at the age of seven and has been a local resident ever since. He is a graduate of Atlantic City High School and New York University. He has been affiliated with the Atlantic City Board of Education for the past 22 years as a teacher of various subjects and he is currently their public information specialist. “Pinky’s talk show, which began on radio station WLDB, was broadcast from the veranda of the then Chelsea Hotel. It was for one hour, from 11pm to midnight. The show moved in September to the Riptide Room in the Pen Atlantic Hotel, where it was located in a cozy corner. Hence, the name of Pinky’s Corner was a natural. In the following summer, he became affiliated with WOND and has been there ever since. “He had moved his show to Maisel’s Restaurant on the Boardwalk, across from the Steel Pier. From there the show moved to Luigi’s Gondola Room and then, for a short while, to the radio studio and then to Zaberer’s Restaurant. Charlie Zaberer had a 6-foot 4-inch, life-sized picture of Pinky made to put in the entrance to his facility, where he has been for the past year. Although the show has emanated from many different locations, it has always been in a corner.” The magazine story written 10 years earlier stated

the following: “Currently Pinky wears several hats, the first from 8:30am-3:30pm in the public school system where he is a teacher. His teaching career was interrupted for a stint in the Merchant Marines, after which he served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He returned to the U.S. Army for two years during the Korean conflict. The hat Pinky wears all of the time is that of a civic leader — the role [that] earned him the Atlantic City Jaycees Distinguished Service Award in 1960, the Optimist Club’s Man of the Year Award in 1961, and the Jewish War Veterans Brotherhood Award in 1962. In 1963 he was elected President of the Atlantic City Jaycees Chapter, and during that year the club’s membership nearly doubled. Also during that year, the club carried out a daily physical fitness program on the A.C. beach, led by Mac Seelig. Another accomplishment of his Jaycees administration was an interfaith program involving churches of all denominations. “Another hat was of the cool straw variety, for he dons that in the summer in Luigi’s Gondola Room, a nightclub. He has managed the club for the past two summers and he books some of the most renowned acts in the country to perform there. The radio show has worked its share of minor miracles in its history — from raising $250 for the Citizen Scholarship Fund for which he once was chairman, to collecting more than 1,700 gifts for the Salvation Army. He followed the suggestion of a listener to ask his audience to drop presents off at the city’s park and a center-city location, and they did so. “One of the most rewarding programs he founded and co-chaired with Boo Pergament was the Atlantic CityPuerto Rico Annual Reciprocal Visitation Program, where young basketball players spent time in Puerto Rico and youngsters from that country visited Atlantic City yearly. His radio guests over the years have included Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, Joan Fontaine, Sammy Davis Jr., Vice President Hubert Humphrey, columnist Drew Pearson, jazz great Louis Armstrong, and just about every majorname performer and elected official that visited A.C. “Pinky’s Corner serves a worthwhile service to the South Jersey area. Pinky Kravitz has an understanding and compassion for people that makes it easy to understand why he has been one of the top-rated radioman of the area for so long. He has been cited by many organizations for his constant endeavors to better our community. We hope he will continue to sit in his corner for many years to come.” I hope you enjoyed reading these two stories which, in a few instances, were combined to give you an insight into “The Man in the Corner.” Thank you for sharing this Corner with me. n

Turning Up the Heat Greek Style

Frigid January temperatures, snowy mornings and wind chills in the teens — it can only mean one thing. It’s time to break out the baklava. Once again the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Egg Harbor Township has scheduled a winter version of their popular Greek festival. The Holy Trinity summer festival in June is a staple of the area drawing well over 10,000 people each year. Last year the church began a winter version, which thankfully was held indoors at the church community center at the corner of Mill Road and Ridge Avenue. This year’s festival will be held from Friday Jan. 22 to Jan. 24. And best of all, admission and parking for the festival are free. As always, the highlight of the festival is the food with includes gyros, shish-ke-bob, pastichio, moussaka, cheese pies, baklava, pastries and more. But the church is also adding an electronic gadget recycling program to the event. Bring your used cell phones, laptops, MP3 players, digital cameras, GPS devices, gaming consoles, camcorders, satellite radio, PDA’s, external hard drives, video games, movies, Blu-ray players, LCD monitors, and calculators and the church will recycle them at no charge and ensure they don’t end up in a land-fill. As organizers of the event always say, the Greeks really know how to throw a party, whatever the weather is like. For information, call 653-8092. — Mike Pritchard

New Exhibits at African-American Heritage Museum

The African-American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey is opening a series of new exhibits this month. Artist Dressler Smith, of Pennsauken, bills herself as a colorist working in a number of media. Also presented will be drawings of notable African-American figures by Richmond Garrick and the paintings of Todd Johnson. Another exhibit focuses on the intricate, handcrafted dolls of Belinda Starr Manning. The works will share a gallery with Michael Roche’s original drawings from the children’s book, Zimba the Turtle, written by Joyce WrightMcAdoo. The museum also offers an exhibit titled The Great Kings of Africa. The exhibits run through April. A reception is planned for Saturday, Feb. 20, from 1-4pm at the Martin Luther King Center at 661 Jackson Rd. in Newtonville. For information visit — MP

A: This is my first. It’s a great show. It’s great to find jazz alive and well in South Jersey.

Diana Bright Linwood, N.J. A: This is my first Somers Point Jazz Society event. The music was great and I’m really looking forward to the upcoming events they are producing.

Barry Miles Cape May, N.J. A: I have been to many events put on by the society. It’s always wonderful. George and all of the guys here are world-class jazz musicians.

[in the audience]. They’re not gonna look at me and think I’m gonna steal their guy or something.” Almost as if to demonstrate that blacks don’t consider her offensive even though she liberally peppers her act with the nword, Lampanelli is headlining at Borgata Sunday night, Jan. 17, which just happens to be part of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. Another point where Lampanelli and Rickles veer off in different directions is the line separating comedy and good taste. Although Rickles’ comedy was considered shocking when he emerged during the 1960s, he never crossed the line. Lampanelli doesn’t even acknowledge there is a line. “Where is the line?” she asked rhetorically. “The line is always moving. I could do a joke about the Special Olympics and people will be offended, and then I’ll get a letter from the mother of a Special Olympics kid thanking me for making a joke of a terrible thing because it lightens things up. So I’m not crossing any line because there really isn’t a line.” Out of high school, but long before she began her comedy career, Lampanelli, who grew up in a middle-class home in Connecticut, studied journalism at Syracuse University and went through a graduate program at Harvard. She worked at a series of magazines, including Popular Mechanics, Spy and Rolling Stone as a copy editor and fact checker before finally getting into the funny business in the early 1990s. It took her the better part of a decade before she attracted the attention of the masses, and her big break came in 2002 when she appeared on the dais of a Friar’s Club roast of Chevy Chase. She’s since become a familiar figure at celebrity roasts, and — like Rickles — she never picks on someone or something she doesn’t like. “People can just tell if you don’t like someone, and that’s why I can get away with the things I say,” she said. “That’s why I never pick on people I don’t like. It would just be so obvious.” n

A C W E E K LY. C O M / M O N T H 0 0 , 2 0 0 9

O BE CERTAIN, COMEDIAN Lisa Lampanelli wasn’t the first celebrity to earn the sobriquet “Queen of Mean.” That distinction belonged to the late and disgraced hotelier Leona Helmsley. But the performer and the billionaire real estate mogul, who died in 2007, did share at least one other common bond: They both got themselves booked — Helmlsey into federal prison for income tax evasion, and Lampanelli into nightclubs and theaters to perform her scathingly funny, no-holds-barred brand of insult comedy. In the event you’ve been avoiding cable television over the past decade, Lampanelli is the potty-mouthed former magazine fact-checker and copy editor whose overthe-top, racially charged humor has made her a favored guest on Howard Stern’s satellite radio show, a frequent and soughtafter panelist at celebrity roasts, earned her a 2008 Grammy nomination and her own HBO special. Race, religion, sexual orientation — Lampanelli has no sacred cows. If Don Rickles and the late Totie Fields had a love child, it would be Lampanelli, who drops more f-bombs and graphic sexual terms in one vulgarity-laden show than Rickles has during his 50-year career. On stage and off, Lampanelli, a chunky, 48-year-old white woman, professes a deep and abiding affection for black men, and she isn’t the least bit shy about graphically discussing her sexual liaisons with AfricanAmerican men. And while her act is radically different from Rickles’, whom she considers her hero, she gets away with it the same way the Merchant of Venom has been given a free pass for all these years: Audiences seem to inherently understand that no matter how shocking her material may be, it’s all in fun. “If people thought for one minute that I really meant any of this shit, I’d still be making 14 grand a year [as a copy editor],” she said in a 2007 Atlantic City Weekly interview. In much the same way that roly-poly comedian Buddy Hackett’s physical appearance enhanced his comedy, Lampanelli knows her looks help defuse any accusations of racism. “I dunno, people can look at me and just see that I’m just kidding [about the racial jokes],” she said. “I think it would be a lot harder if I looked like some hot movie star. See, I’m not a threat to the women

ACK WHEN THE ECONOMY was still safe for ambitious enterprise, The Pool debuted at Harrah’s Resort with about as much instantaneous success as hyperbole will allow. Word began to spread of an oasis-like nightclub atmosphere long before the huge, domed structure started to take shape adjacent to the Absecon Inlet, and its splendor probably exceeds anything anyone could have imagined before The Pool was completed in 2006. Part of the $550 million waterfront expansion of Harrah’s Resort (which ultimately gave A.C. the digitally illuminated 44-story Waterfront Tower), the $25 million Pool evidenced Harrah’s heightened commitment to increasing its nightlife and entertainment options beyond the gaming tables. The move paid big dividends. Last winter The Pool took top honors in four categories at the inaugural AC Weekly Reader’s Choice Nightlife Awards (scheduled this year for Thurs., Jan 21, at Boogie Nights at Resorts), but rather than rest on its laurels, Harrah’s rebuffed the recession by pouring an additional $1.1 million into The Loft — an upper-level Pool area previously and primarily used for special events (such as its well-received Monday night Hawaiian Luau during the summer). A large outdoor deck area will heighten entertainment options even further come spring, and/or when the weather permits. Indoors, The Loft features a large walkaround bar, two eightperson cabanas, two gilded cages where shapely ladies dance to the sounds of DJs (and occasional live music) and — overlooking the palm- and tropical plantfringed, 172,000-foot Pool area — probably the best view in the city that doesn’t involve peering through a window. “The Pool guests are generally limited to the first floor, and The Loft will mainly be for VIP tables, bottle-service and bar minimums,” says Howard Weiss, director of The Pool and nightlife operations. “If you’re a VIP guest downstairs, you’ll also have access to The Loft as well. “[The Loft’s] a super-premium bar — all the spirits are on the high end — and we’ll feature a crystal ice sculpture every Friday and Saturday night for all our VIP guests,” says Weiss. “The dancers come in around midnight and perform to music that feeds in from the main level [often provided by celebrity DJs, or house DJ Vito G on

SINdustry Wednesdays, DJ James Strzz and Emcee Ringo on Fridays, and DJ SL on Saturdays]. We just opened on New Year’s Eve [with O.A.R.’s after party, and Entourage‘s Adrien Grenier’s band appearing Jan. 2], and we just had our first private event up here, a wedding reception, which worked out real well.” The Loft’s cabana rentals are “loftily” priced, but each can accommodate up to eight guests and come with plenty of amenities, such as a fully stocked refrigerator, plasma TVs, video-game consoles, plush daybeds, ottomans and overstuffed couches, and much more elbow room than you can expect to find on the main level during a typical Friday or Saturday night. “There’s true bottle service up here too,” says Weiss. “Downstairs in the main Pool area you can’t take bottles out [the concern being the potential for broken glass getting into the pool], but up here not that’s not a concern. “Basically we just wanted to give our guests another upscale option,” adds Weiss. “The Pool itself is and has been a very successful product, and now we have the opportunity to take the upstairs — which a lot of people have enjoyed, but was sort of underutilized — to a new level.” n

MC Lyte and Kid Capri at Legends of Hip-Hop show at HOB By Raymond Tyler

C LYTE’S CAREER HAS BEEN celebrated at VH1’s annual Hip Hop Honors, she’s had hits as a solo artist and also with remixes of Janet Jackson and Queen Latifah songs. She’ll be performing at the Legends of Hip-Hop II concert this Saturday, Jan. 16, at Showboat’s House of Blues along with Kid Capri. I had a chance to talk with both artists, who will be joined at the concert by Chubb Rock, Big Daddy Kane and Naughty By Nature. Here’s a segment of my conversation with MC Lyte.

After working with Positive K on the track “I Ain’t Having It,” he records a similar song called “I Got a Man.” Why didn’t he call you for that? There was some things going on between Pos and people from my label, so I didn’t expect him to call me for that one. We have talked about updating “I’m What do you remember about your first hit Not Having It,” so you never know. “10% Dis”? MY H EEL IS K ILLING M E! By Dr. Michael Welch, D.P.M.

Do you find yourself waking up in the morning barely able to walk because of heel pain? Do you find that after you sit down for a while at work and get up to do something that your heel is painful again? You are not alone. Many suffer with heel pain that interferes with their ability to do the things they want and to enjoy themselves. Some call this ailment heel spur pain, but the proper medical term is plantar fasciitis. “I have many people coming into my office saying, ‘Doc. You have to do something to get rid of this pain. I cannot take it anymore. When I get out of the bed in the morning I feel like I am going to fall over because the pain is so bad,’” says Dr. Michael Welch at the Atlantic Foot and Ankle Center, located in the Egg Harbor City/Galloway area. This painful heel con-

dition can occur at any time of the year, but is often diagnosed during the holiday seasons with all the walking and activities involved. Plantar fasciitis occurs on the bottom of the foot along a strong fibrous connective tissue extending from the heel to the ball of the foot. Luckily, most cases will improve with conservative treatment. There are things that can be attempted at home before deciding to seek medical help. Try stretching for five to 10 minutes before getting out of bed in the morning, and throughout the day, by placing a belt or towel around the ball of your foot until you feel a slight discomfort; hold for 15 seconds. Do not overstretch your foot as this can cause more pain. Try antiinflammatory medications. Avoid barefoot walking; it is best to wear a wedged or moderately heeled shoe. Try massaging foot with a bottle of frozen water, letting it roll back and forth on your heel. Avoid aerobic exercises, StairMaster, or see more online @

other stressful foot activity. Bike riding or swimming avoids aggravating this painful condition. If pain continues or worsens, see a physician who treats this problem. Treatments included are prescription strength anti-inflammatory meds, cortisone injections, and physical therapy. Physicians can recommend over-the-counter insoles for shoes and often times prescription orthotics are prescribed. Sometimes surgery is required. These endoscopic procedures lengthening connective tissues can restore normal function of the foot. Surgery can be performed in the doctor’s office or in an operating room depending on patient’s preference. An endoscopic procedure will lengthen the tight connective tissues and can restore normal function of

the foot. The procedure takes 15 to 20 minutes to perform and requires only a 1cm incision on the side of the heel. Patients should expect to wear a special boot for three weeks after surgery to prevent hyperextension of the band of tissue. For those wishing to avoid surgery, shockwave therapy is an option. This operating-room procedure requires anesthesia as it can be very painful. Shockwave therapy consists of using a high-frequency sound wave on the heel and takes approximately 45 minutes to complete. There is some controversy as to the effectiveness of this procedure. The good news is that you do not have to suffer with heel pain.

A gastronomic wish list for the southern New Jersey region By Frank Gabriel

JMA O NN U TA H R Y0 1 ek 04 , ,2 2 001 9 0/ /A A CC WW E Ee K L Yl .yC. C OO MM

S BEFITS A NEW YEAR, AND the auspicious launch of a brand new decade, we present a personal gastronomic wish list for the southern New Jersey region. Mario Batali — Washington state born and raised, but New Jersey educated (with a degree from Rutgers in Literature) he’s become a living legend in New York City well prior to celebrating his 50th birthday. Batali is also one of very few television chefs (Molto Mario) who prepare their wares in real time, working under the grinding pressure that a real professional kitchen must endure each and every day. While we have certainly garnered a plethora of big-time celeb chefs — Puck, Mina and Flay to name but a few — the only burly man in America capable of pulling off wearing orange clogs in public still hasn’t shown much interest in our area. We think of A.C. as quite a natural extension of Batali’s burgeoning empire, and that our indigenous foods would pair magnificently given his creativity and talent. Imagine what a coup it would be for a new casino operator — are you reading this Pinnacle or Revel? — to introduce Batali as part of a really grand, “Grand Opening!” Just a thought. Keller’s Burgers — Having had the opportunity to sample world-class chef Thomas Keller’s homage to the classic American sandwich during a visit to Vegas’ Mandalay Bay resort, we long for the day the bearded Alsatian master brings his considerable bag of tricks

Hamilton Mall

10 minutes from A.C. Convention

Chef Mario Batali

here to the East Coast. Keller, who finished a close second to Rick Bayless in the recent Top Chef Masters competition on Bravo, is soft-spoken and humble despite possessing an impeccable range and depth of culinary knowledge. His burgers are beatific, great big juicy hunks of grilled meat laden with wonderful, quality ingredients and fashioned with flawless, remarkable technique. Who knows, maybe some sharp casino exec will convince him to bring an outpost of Fleur De Lys — his superb gourmet franchise — along for the ride too? More BBQ Joints — While we do have a few fine purveyors of porky good-

ness — Corky’s in A.C., Uncle Dewey’s and General Barbeque in Richland and Wash’s in Pleasantville — they’re still too few and far between, at least for our grease-stained fingertips. We still mourn the day the famous Kingfish stand ceased operations in western Atlantic county. For that matter, can anybody out there actually prepare the famous rib-stickin’ southern specialty, Brunswick stew, the Kingfish featured at this time of year? And what about the rumor we heard from no less than respected Ventnor chef Neil Elsohn of Gertrude’s about a new BBQ haven opening on the Delaware Bay in southern Cape May County’s oddly named

The Villas community? Baked Alaska — We first sampled this now-retro dessert over three decades ago, at a long-defunct Vineland restaurant called The Polynesian Garden. It’s a simple, brilliant French cooking concept; ice cream carefully folded inside a sheath of puffy meringue, and then flambéed tableside with brandy. Done right, the result is a caramel crust, not unlike the top layer of a well-made crème brulee, giving way to luscious, cool creaminess within. Dim Sum — Yes, we know a few local restaurants, most notably casinobased, serve this traditional Chinese take on Sunday brunch, but we’d like to see it offered somewhere on a daily basis. You’ll find these operations in any major U.S. city with the population base and market to support it. While A.C. may lack the numbers to achieve that critical mass, the popularity of casino gaming with Asian customers should make Dim Sum dining a natural option. It’s also one of the great, buffet-style mass consumption eating experiences available in the world. Tuxedo-clad waitpersons wheel shiny metal carts filled with a bounty of exotic delicacies — meat, seafood, vegetative and especially dumplings, which can be either steamed or fried — then present and serve them tableside. It’s a fun, interactive way to eat, as it enables you to try lots of different stuff in small plates without much in the way of cost. n E-mail Frank Gabriel at see more online @

Here’s to 50! G By Jerry Blavat

REETINGS AND SALUTATIONS for the new year and the new decade. And for you folks who were with us at the Taj to celebrate, it was outstanding. As usual it was done with class and style, and I’ve got to congratulate Mark Juliano, Steve Gietka, Bill Schmal, K.K., and the entire staff and crew who made it such a memorable event. Now that we’re in 2010 we’ll be celebrating 50 years of musical memories that you and I have shared, and a part of that 50-year run is as a writer for the Whoot!, now the Atlantic City Weekly. So now, let’s ask the Geator.

There is a movie about Calamity Jane starring Doris Day that I saw on TV. Do you know anything about the actor who did a dance dressed as a woman? In the credits he was listed as Dick Wesson. I don’t recognize his name but I know I have seen him before. — Mimi Cushman

Scene. As you know, back then we had two different dances: the Chez Vous at 69th Street on a Friday night, and Wagner’s at Broad and Olney on Sunday Dick Wesson (below) was a popular afternoon. So when the kids at Chez character actor and comedian in the Vous created the dance to “You Can’t 1950s and ’60s who also produced the TV Hurry Love by the Supremes, we named show Petticoat Junction. You may remem- it the Chez Vous Walk. And when the ber him from The Bob Cummings Show or kids at Wagner’s came up with a dance to The People’s Choice, in which he played “Mine Exclusively by the Olympics, we Rollo the Marine and best friend of Jackie called it the Wagner Walk. Cooper, the star of the series. Great trivia A long time ago my father heard me singquestion: Remember the name of the talking dog on the show? Answer below. ing songs in the bathroom that I learned listening to your radio show. As time has gone by, the thing that stands out in my Does anyone know mind is that you never took the easy road. how the Wagner Walk You set standards that today we still honor as dance was invented? I the greatest music played. Lady Gaga

By Ed Condran

T’S NOT DIFFICULT TO SEE WHY THE POP-MUSIC world and beyond is gaga over Lady Gaga. In just over a year the sensual diva has gone from virtual unknown to a superstar, who has sold more than eight million copies of her initial albums, 2008’s The Fame and 2009’s The Fame Monster. Gaga, aka Stefani Germanotta, is filling a gaping hole in the pop scene since she can sing, write and produce catchy, provocative songs. But what stands out most about Gaga, who will perform Saturday at the Borgata in Atlantic City, is her ability to entertain. The New York City native has the ability to captivate via music, costumes (her plastic bubble dress was arguably the best onstage outfit of 2009) and glam pop star attitude. In a music world filled with milquetoast figures, Gaga stands out that much more since she’s an old-school entertainer, who appears to have stepped straight out of the ’70s. It’s not surprising that Gaga, 23, is heavily influenced by the theatrical David Bowie and Queen. She’s outrageous, but that’s what pop music performers were once upon a time: freaks who walked upon the high wire ala circus performers. In other words, Gaga adds color to a vanilla pop scene. It was evident when she opened for New Kids on the Block in early 2009. “You got to check out who’s opening for us,” NKOTB’s Danny Wood said. “Lady Gaga is tremendous. You can’t take your eyes off of her. She’s definitely a reason to come out early to our shows. I can’t tell you how much I’m impressed by her. I’m a huge fan. She’s going to be really big.” Wood was on the money. Gaga is about as big as it gets right now. Odds are that she’s not a flash in the pan either since she has substance. One of Gaga’s collaborators, singer-songwriter Michael Bolton, lauds his new writing mate. Gaga co-wrote some songs, which will appear on the formerly hirsute singer’s forthcoming disc. “When I heard her advance tracks, ‘Just Dance’ and ‘Poker Face’ well before they were released, I was blown away,” Bolton said. “I just knew those songs would be big and they exploded four months after we started working together. Gaga is the new Madonna. She has incredible talent. Unlike a lot of singers, who have had some success, she can do it all. She is an incredibly talented songwriter.

‘Gaga is the new Madonna. She has incredible talent.’ – Michael Bolton

Not many young recording artists are in her league. Just think how young she is. She’s only in her early twenties. I wish I could buy some stock in her career. It’s only going to keep going up. It was such a great experience working with her. She’s a total professional, who is a monster talent.” Sure, Gaga, who impressed during the MTV Video Music Awards with a dramatic performance, has earned a myriad of accolades and has come a long way from her days on the New York club scene. However, the glamorous sensation is not a finished product yet. Her December show at Camden’s Susquehanna Bank Center proved that she has a way to go in terms of pulling off a two-hour set. First off, it’s surprising that Gaga would perform for 120 minutes when her canon checks in at an hour –and-a-half. Her show lagged at points thanks to the myriad of costume changes. The new sex kitten’s patter was predictable as she spoke of her over-active libido throughout the event. Sure, it roused the stoked crowd initially, but it was clearly time to move on. All of the invitations to ravish her were a bit much. But odds are that she’ll

learn that what works on a video shoot may not produce winning results during an entire concert. Any time Gaga’s show started to groove, poof — the star popped off the stage. Gaga doesn’t completely live up to the hype, but she’s the most intriguing music star on the circuit and that will probably remain the same unless star-crossed chanteuse Amy Winehouse ever gets her act together. Her flaws are outweighed by her considerable assets, many of which are sonic. The former in-house songwriter for Interscope writes tunes filled with memorable melodies and her songs pack club-friendly production. Her material is salacious, but she doesn’t go over the top ala Peaches, who isn’t happy until she’s crossed the X-rated line. Gaga is crazy savvy for someone who hasn’t hit the quarter-century mark. She knows what the public wants and she delivers. How crazy is it that both Weezer and Daughtry have covered “Poker Face?” “Paparazzi” is perhaps her most inspired cut since Gaga doesn’t play the predictable role of star, but she sings from the perspective of the parasitic photographer. It’s never easy following up a multi-platinum breakthrough release, but Gaga fares well with The Fame Monster. The cuts “Bad Romance” and “Alejandro” are brilliant, catchy pieces of pop. Any of Gaga’s detractors can’t say much since Gaga proves that she is not a flash in the pan with her latest album. It won’t be long before Gaga headlines arenas and tickets will be just as difficult to score as ducats for this intimate Borgata show, which also features Semi Precious Weapons and Jason Derulo. n

Louie Anderson Moonlights in A.C. The comic takes a break from a steady Vegas gig to show Atlantic City some love By Michael Pritchard

J A N U A R Y 1 4 , 2 0 1 0 / A C W E E K LY. C O M

OUIE ANDERSON HAS SETTLED down — sort of. The veteran comic, who has experienced success on TV with shows such as the animated Life with Louie, penned three bestsellers on dealing with his dysfunctional family and appeared in numerous films, has always been first and foremost a stand-up comedian. And now it’s his day job. Well, actually it’s his 7pm job, five days a week at the Excalibur Hotel in Las Vegas. For the last four years he’s been on stage night after night. But Saturday, Jan. 16, Anderson takes a break from Vegas with an appearance at Trump Plaza’s Theater. Needless to say, Anderson will be bringing very current material with him. “The last few months I’ve been doing stuff on Tiger Woods and the whole health-care situation and touching on a lot of current events,” Anderson tells Atlantic City Weekly. “But I’m always working on new stuff. What happens when you work five days a week; it opens yourself up to be able to create more. It just becomes an automatic. I’ve always been a guy who will take a subject and bring it up on stage with him and see how it goes. I’m not afraid to just try things.” Throughout Anderson’s career, he’s always presented a laid back, homey feel on stage, drawing heavily on his family life. But he credits his regular gig as allowing him to finally hone his act to just what he wants it to be. “I remember when I first started, it was like I’d go on stage and I’d already be halfway through my act,” he says. “I really wanted to make people laugh and I felt I rushed things too much and my timing was a little off … But I’ll tell you, nothing has made me a stronger performer like performing five nights a week.” When Anderson took on the regular appearances, he purposely set his starting time at 7pm, joking that his audience doesn’t like to stay up late. “It’s the kind of show I can do in my slippers,” he says. “But it’s true though: My audience likes to be home so they can watch the news afterwards.” It’s been about two years since Anderson

‘Nothing has made me a stronger performer like performing five nights a week.’ appeared in Atlantic City (“I’ve been boycotting,” he laughs), but even with his Vegas show, he still manages to take his act on the road. “I still do some traveling,” he says. “I went to Minneapolis last week and I recently did a show in Indiana. Even though I’m doing shows five nights a week I still try to get out on the road once or twice a month.” So when the call came to do an Atlantic City appearance, he jumped at it. “Atlantic City is one of those special places; Vegas and Atlantic City,” he says. “They may have casinos all over the country now, but Atlantic City is a part of comedy legend. I mean Rodney [Dangerfield] played there and Shecky [Greene]; you know all those great comedians. Buddy Hackett and Henny Youngman, my friend, and Rodney, my friend and Joan Rivers, my friend. You know so all these people have been on those stages. So they’re pretty special. The same is true in Vegas. You know when I played the Sands in Vegas I would

stand there and say, ‘Wow, this is the stage where Joey Bishop also bombed.’” Of course, many of those comics may not have picked a frigid January date for an Atlantic City appearance. “I guess when the Atlantic City offer came up, the feeling was that my fans would have enough insulation,” he laughs. “Or I do. Or both.” Anderson has also found the time to make a commitment to young, up-andcoming comics. Anderson participates in Stand-Up Boot Camp, created by comedian Kyle Cease. The program features comics like Anderson and John Lovitz among others, who work with new comics. “The idea is to work with young comics and help them,” he says. “You know, try to show them what works and why other things aren’t working for them. It’s about mentoring them, which is something I’ve always tried to do.” In fact, Anderson is very protective of young comics, especially as they struggle to find their voice. “I am protective of them because I’ve

been there,” he says. “I think it’s the Mom in me. But I remember very early in my career I opened, in Atlantic City, for Dolly Parton. And I really thought that I had bombed. But she came up to me and said, ‘Don’t worry about it. This is a different type of audience. If they don’t know you, you really have to work to prove yourself to them.’ “And then I watched her go out, and at least that night she was met with a kind of lukewarm response,” he says. “So I guess everybody had just lost so much money that they didn’t care who was up there.” Of course, no matter how many times Anderson died on stage early on, it rarely had the ramifications of an Internet hoax a few years ago that said he had literally died. “The New York Times actually called me about that,” he says. “You know, if I had died. I said, ‘I don’t think so. Let me check.’ It was so weird. People would run into me and say, ‘Oh I thought you were dead.’ And I would once again do that same joke, because it always worked. At Trump Plaza, Anderson says his routine will cover the end of the holidays and New Year’s resolutions. But as always, he’ll draw from his family experience. “The whole idea of my family is that I had an alcoholic father and a really protective mother and there were 11 kids so it was always a very chaotic and rough childhood,” Anderson says. “But I tried to find some good in it and some humor. And talk about experiences that would make it a little less threatening to people. “For instance I would say that my father never hit us, he carried a gun,” he says. “I soften it and try to make the joke palatable. You know, my dad smoked; he drank. At 79 we finally had to kill him. My mom ate every piece of butter in the Midwest, but she still lived to 77. God rest her soul. So I try to take all those experiences and find what was underneath them. Because with all those things, if you don’t find what’s underneath them, you won’t survive them.” And for the moment, Louie Anderson is surviving just fine. n see more online @

Up in the Air

Oscar Frontrunner

Enchanting ‘Up in the Air’ plus Meryl and Mr. Holmes By Lori Hoffman

T IS CATCH-UP TIME THIS WEEK after I presented my favorite flicks of the year and of the decade. One of the best films on my favorites list was Oscar frontrunner Up in the Air. The film features the finest performance of George Clooney’s career. His character, Ryan Bingham, fires people for a living. When corporate executives don’t have the guts to do the dirty work themselves they hire Bingham’s firm. He does his work with compassion and understanding, qualities that seem lacking in his personal life. He spends most of his time on airplanes and has turned air travel into an art form. He is a man who loves air travel far too much and relationships on the ground far too little. Bingham is paired up with a new employee at the firm, Natalie Keener (Anna Kendrick), who has come up with the fabulous notion that you can save time and air travel expenses by firing people via a video conference. Up in the Air HHHH Co-written & directed by Jason Reitman; rated R It’s Complicated HHHH Written & directed by Nancy Meyers

Sherlock Holmes HHHH Directed by Guy Ritchie; rated PG-13

Bingham is unhappy about the thought that he would be permanently grounded. Keener is young, ambitious and has no idea about the emotional stake that people have in jobs that keep their world stable and their families safe. Bingham must school her on the humanity of job loss as they hit the airways together. While he introduces Anna to the agony of job loss, he also finds a romantic partner in Alex (Vera Farminga), a frequent flier who shares his passion for air travel and shallow, sexy hook-ups. While Ryan shows Anna the ropes, he begins to see the folly of his high-flying lifestyle and contemplates looking for something deeper. That search provides new insights and the pain that comes from letting one’s emotions loose. The brilliant writer-director Jason Reitman (Thank You For Smoking, Juno) has expanded his emotional range with this enchanting blend of ripped-fromthe-headlines downsizing, romantic entanglements, family relationships and mentoring. Ryan’s teacher-pupil relationship with Anna, and his smoldering affair with Alex, sends his life in directions he never expected when he was ensconced in his safe cocoon of emotional distance. Perfectly timed to comment on the current economic crisis, Up in the Air is also sexy, funny and chock full of great acting and insight.

Marvelous Meryl It’s Complicated was designed for the Baby Boomer generation. With all the tentpole movies dominating the landscape, we’ll take it, even if writer-director Nancy Meyers’ “affair with the ex-husband plot” goes over-the-top and is sloppy here and there. You can’t beat having Meryl Streep as a woman, divorced for 10 years, who starts having an affair with her childish ex (played by Alec Baldwin). Meanwhile, she has caught the romantic attention of her architect (Steve Martin) and her soonto-be son-in-law (John Krasinski) figures out what is going on. There are some big laughs in this movie, mostly provided by Baldwin and Krasinski, that make up for the conventional clichés that abound.

Hyped Up ‘Holmes’ As much as I enjoyed the notion of a Guy Ritchie-directed mash-up of his British gangster style (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels) and the polite Victorian

milieu of Sherlock Holmes, Ritchie leaned too much on his modern action style for my taste. I enjoyed Robert Downey’s more physical Holmes with his cerebral side as an after thought, and Jude Law as Dr. Watson was a perfectly splendid casting decision. However, the silly villain Lord Blackwood was a bit much, and wasted the talent of Ritchie regular Mark Strong. The entire plot is hard to follow and unspools at such a breakneck pace you never have time to contemplate what is happening; when we are talking about a Sherlock Holmes movie that is a fatal flaw. That said, the film had plenty of fun but the fun was fleeting and the film is ultimately forgettable. n
