Employees of the Year District 191 employees provide the highest quality service and support to students, families and the community. The district recognizes those who go above and beyond each year. The 2013 District 191 Employees of the Year are, from left: Lori Huberty, food service at Metcalf Junior High in Burnsville; Myron Schuur, district-wide maintenance; and Sherry Gilbertson, educational assistant at Vista View Elementary in Burnsville. Congratulations and thanks to them.

Transportation District 191 contracts with Durham School Services to provide busing for approximately 60 percent of its students. To ensure student safety, Durham School Services employs only qualified, trained drivers and uses a rigorous ongoing evaluation process. All vehicles used to transport students are inspected annually by the Minnesota State Patrol. Kindergarten and elementary students must live one mile or more from their assigned school to be bused. Junior and senior high students are transported together and must live 1.5 miles or more from their assigned schools to be eligible for transportation. In addition, senior high students must register for service. Drivers complete conduct reports for students who behave inappropriately on the bus and forward them to school principals. The district reserves the right to deny transportation service to students with a history of behavior problems. For more information, call the transportation department at 952/707-2067 or 952/707-2069.

Free or reduced-priced meals are available for children who qualify. If a family qualifies for free or reduced meals, an Application for Educational Benefits must be completed each school year and submitted to the Food Service Department for review and approval. Applying for Free and Reduced price meals is available online! The process is safe, secure, private, and available, anytime, anywhere. Go to http://www. schoollunchapp.com. Parents and guardians can manage their children’s food service accounts via SchoolView/FeePay the parent portal in District 191. For information about SchoolView/FeePay, go to www.isd191.org Healthier School Meals All breakfasts and lunches are prepared in accordance with standards set by the United States Department of Agriculture and reflect today’s emphasis on healthier menus. All meals offer a variety of selections each day and include whole grains, lean meats/meat alternates, fresh fruits and vegetables and low fat dairy products. Salads and deli sandwiches are available at all schools for the same price as a traditional lunch. Menus are posted on the District website at www.isd191.org and are available in each school. If bringing food or beverages from home, it’s better if they are nutritious ones. Under the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act (passed by Congress in January 2012) schools offer more fruits and vegetables in an effort to increase consumption. To qualify for the “complete meal” students must have at least ½ cup portion of a fruit, vegetable or combination of both on their lunch tray. Students need to make sure they have at least 3 different food groups on their tray with the fruit or vegetable being one of the food groups. Federal regulations require meals to be priced as a complete unit and students must pay the full price even if they did not choose the complete meal. Students are encouraged to take all of the food items offered, as doing so provides a balanced meal for the best price. For more information, please call 952/707-2051.
