FOOD FOR THOUGHT

A child and his father were visiting an elderly neighbor. They were raking the neighbor's leaves, organizing the neighbor's garage, putting the trash out, and performing other small jobs around the neighbor's house.

The child had not really seen the elderly neighbor up close before, but on this day he was going to for the first time.

When the child met the neighbor up close he asked him how old he was, and the father was flabbergasted by his child's question and attempted to apologize to the neighbor, but the gentleman just laughed and said that it was ok, the child is curious. The elderly neighbor told the child he was 92 years old.

The child with a look of utter disbelief asked the neighbor, "Did you start at the number one?"

Actually, everybody starts before the number one.

Another busy & fun filled year! Starting with small steps of trepidation, the little ones have taken giant strides through this exciting phase.

Built on a foundation of learning a large variety of skills, some new, some old & some just to help prepare, they are now ready to meet bigger challenges up ahead Outdoors they have progressed with their abilities in the water, ball skills and generally keeping fit & very active!

Computers & Cami Maths was quite a challenge to start with, but after much practice with the 'evasive' mouse, they soon managed to conquer him & discovered many new activities to master.

The children loved their excursion to uShaka, for some the bus ride was just as much fun as the Dolphin Show, the tour around the aquarium AND the picnic to fill excited little tummies.

Fun Day was oh so messy & busy and for most of the children; "The best day ever"!

So many wonderful concerts to watch in the big hall that seemed so daunting on their first day; a multitude of garden activities to romp through and of course; yellow group with the excitement of changing themes and board games to excel in.

Chinese Day– a major highlight, eating authentic Chinese food with chopsticks was quickly overcome to gulp down the bow ties & ice cream treat that followed.

They were superstars on and off the stage. Their final accomplishment was stepping into Wonderland & stepping out with a Graduation certificate in their hand!

Our new little GRADE ONES were very excited to start ‘Big School’.

With their bags unpacked, big smiles on their faces, their school career began. The children have learnt so much this year!

They have worked hard and are now able to read and write. The pupils have also grasped learning new languages quite well and are now able to speak some Afrikaans and Zulu!

What a busy year! We are so proud of what they have accomplished.

EXCURSIONS The grade took a trip on a bus to Flag Animal Farm. For some children it was their first time on a bus. We fed the animals and got to learn all about them. Some children rode a pony while others chose to have a tractor ride.

GRANDPARENTS DAY Grandparents were entertained with the story of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. We had lots of fun learning our words, practicing dances and singing songs. We then went home with our grandparents to spend the afternoon bonding with them.

EXCURSION TO THE HARVESTRY This year the children had an exciting adventure - filled morning at The Harvestry in Botha’s Hill.

The children spent an interesting morning tackling obstacle courses, finding their way through a very spooky maze and zipping along a zipline.

Teamwork was the order of the day and it was so enjoyable seeing many children trying out activities that they had never attempted before. After demolishing their very delicious lunches , it was back to the busses for the trip back to school.

BUSY, BUSY, BUSY

This has been a demanding year‌ even having to stay until 14h15 every afternoon. Pupils also got to take part in the extramural activities offered by the school. This was most exciting with many children trying out Arts and Crafts, Chess, Cricket, Rugby, Netball, Hockey and Soccer. It has been satisfying to watch the children grow in confidence as their sporting skills developed.

Academic badges now being awarded for their excellent work throughout the term, brought on some good competition amongst the learners for the terms ahead. When one received a badge they felt really proud and relieved that all their hard had work paid off.

The Grade 4 outing to GIBA GORGE BOOT CAMP was filled with mixed emotions. The learners took part in obstacle courses and team-building activities. Numerous hidden skills came to light through the various team activities. Learners learnt how to work as a team and encourage one another.

The introduction of mid-year exams was thought to be their biggest nightmare, but they soon realized the word ‘Exam’ is just a fancy word for a test.

It has been a substantial LEARNING EXPERIENCE - all round.

We end off a very successful year by wishing Mrs. Osborn the best of luck in her new venture of Grade 3. We thank her for all her hard work and inspiration in the grade. She will be missed in the Senior Primary Phase.

We look forward to welcoming a new teacher to the Grade 4 team in the upcoming 2020 year.

This is an exciting and rich cultural event that the learners look forward to each year. This year we held our feast at the end of the 3rd term, a change from previous years where it was done in term 4.

The learners enjoyed the process of planning and preparing for this day.

Much time and effort was put into their outfits, dĂŠcor and food made. They were creative with all their marvellous snacks. As always the children were dressed to the nines and the feast provided was fit for all the past pharaohs of Ancient Egypt!

The most eagerly anticipated event of the year for Grade 5., the activities at Shongweni Dam never disappoint the learners .

This event affords a great opportunity for the learners to overcome fears and challenge themselves physically, activities included: raft building and racing on the dam, rock climbing and beach Olympics with the ever popular dive off the jetty!

The experiences had been enjoyable and unforgettable, while the children made new friendships across class groups and fostered special relationships of trust and dependence with one another.

Eagerly anticipated by the grade is our excursion to Infinite Adventures—a popular team building destination, on the 25th of November!

The trip to Ushaka Marine World was a memorable one.

Pupils were taken through the aquarium and learned more about the magical underwater world.

Learners were also more actively involved in many exercises entailing the ecosystem and caring for our coast.

The highlight was definitely the ‘Wet Lab” where pupils actually got to handle sea cucumbers!

Finally… the year most learners most look forward to… time to be ‘top of the school’.

Many soon realise that there is little time to play in Gr 7 as so much is expected of you. The change from six learning areas to nine and the moving from class to class for the various lessons are just some of the adjustments that need to be made. With the guidance of the teachers and the help from fellow classmates this soon becomes a painless process.

In 2019 we welcomed Mrs Pina and Mr Broskie to our team and they are to be thanked for all their hard work , enthusiasm and commitment to our Gr7 pupils.

Much appreciation to all the Specialist teachers for their valuable contribution to each learner’s progress and development.

One of the highlights of Gr 7 is the two-night excursion. From the adventures on the bus ride to the experiences at SEULA ZIMBILI - nothing fell short of great fun and laughter. To all involved with making this such a memorable trip we thank you.

2019 - yet another successful year for the GRADE 7 ENTREPRENEURSHIP PROGRAMME a whole year long effort.

Through this, learners are afforded the opportunity to set up and run their own small businesses, allowing them to practically use what they have been taught in EMS throughout the year.

The learners sold items for Valentine's Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Fun Day and a week in the 3rd Term. Some pupils also sold at the CANSA Relay.

We hope that the 2019 Grade 7s enjoyed the opportunities that they were afforded and we look forward to seeing what the Grade 7s of 2020 have to offer.

Skills The skills week programme started off with a great presentation. This eagerly awaited programme is one of the highlights of the Grade Seven year.

This programme is organized by Mrs Jagernath and assisted by the Gr7 teachers. The presenters are volunteers from the community who share their skill, passion and job experiences.

We are grateful to the sponsors who donate various items which we use as gifts for the learners and presenters.

The Mind and Body Workshop, hosted by Yunnie Khor Tien Tien. The learners learned ways to de-stress and ‘be in the moment’. The course included physical activities, fun yoga and breathing exercises.

The pupils also enjoyed a Hip-Hop Workshop in w hich they learned certain dance steps that they would later use in a dance item at the Talent Show.

Confidence grew and they wowed the crowd with their routine.

GRADE 7 EVENTS As our Grade 7 learners are getting ready for a big step into high school, and we try to emphasise the importance of parent/child relationships.

This includes effective communication, awareness of their children’s whereabouts, as well as with whom they mix / socialise.

To this purpose has been the introduction of two fun social events - Lads and Dads and Moms and Daughters.

This year’s Moms and Daughters enjoyed breakfast, games and talks in the school hall.

Dads and Lads played ‘Minute to Win it’, which was followed by a leisurely braai.

It is most important that parents make time to have fun with each of their children. Fun includes activities enjoyed by all parties.

We wish them our Grade 7 children every success in the next phase of their lives.

Many thanks to counselor, Mrs Bradford, for organising these fun bonding events for parents and children.

The match was tightly contested & the dads were able to secure victory by 5 runs.

The night was filled with fun & laughter.

The Sport Dept was grateful for the parents’ faithful support throughout the 2019 year. Thank you Sports Dept for planning this.

29 NOV 2019 SURE WAS A DAY TO REMEMBER FOR GR 7 PUPILS

After a busy morning of interesting skills workshops, the pupils packed up and went home to get ready for their eagerly anticipated afternoon.

They returned at 3pm with gleaming smiles and bubbling excitement and were in for a surprise as they were led onto the rugby field where their fun would take place.

The field was ablaze with colourful inflatable rides & slides. The children were overwhelmed and ran to try out what was on offer. Some went for water slides and others the foam pit. The bull appealed to some while the rocket was a sure thing for others. There was even a photo-booth!

Just as the pupils thought the day was going well– it got even better!

A group of dancers called ’Young Team’ came on. They blew the learners away with their cool moves and skills, and again, just as the pupils though that THAT was the end—more surprises! Taking centre stage, an amazing fire dancer. They were entrance as she threw her stick up in the air and caught it whilst continuing to dance along to the pumping music.

The day continued with laughter and happiness - feasting on pizzas, popcorn, cool-drinks and other snacks provided by the unbelievable organising committee comprised of parents and teachers. The latter had made sure that everything ran absolutely smoothly.

The learners were beyond thankful for this team without whom , who knows how their day would have gone.

Slowly darkness filled the skies & the time to leave crept closer but no one wanted the night to end. Students gathered & sang, enjoying the last hours together.

It dawned on them that soon they would be leaving each other & could not hold back the tears.

Some really began sobbing, whilst others wept softly.

But then….the teachers had prepared one last surprise.

The pupils gathered under the tent and were given ‘Class of 2019’ T-shirts as memorabilia!

Something they can always keep.

The night came to an abrupt end and everyone was so sad to leave . Although they knew that they would still see each other on Monday, they felt that it was small comfort.

Soon ,the field emptied out.

One thing was for sure. ...

Every 2019 Grade 7 student would remember this day forever and ever.

Atholl Heights is committed to Inclusive Education, ie. it strives to give extra assistance to learners with special educational needs within the existing mainstream content.

The school offers support on various levels.

The formal in-house School Based Support Team exists meets regularly to assist teachers with screening, identifying, assessing and supporting learners experiencing barriers to learning.

The school has a number of specialist personnel available within the school; Remedial Support Teacher—Miss Buttignon Social Worker/School Counsellor—Mrs Bradford Educational Psychologist—Mr Leigh External therapists who oper ate fr om our premises on certain days; Occupational Therapist—Miss Hepworth Speech and Language Therapist—Mrs Vet Speech and Language Therapist—Miss Barnes

During school hours, Miss Buttignon gives remedial lessons to identified pupils from Gr 2 to Gr 4. In addition, extension lessons are given in comprehension skills to selected Gr4 learners to stimulate higher order thinking.

A Computerised Learning Centre also exists where learners may receive individualised, computer-based tuition.

Learners from Grade 2 upwards have been afforded extra English and Afrikaans reading tuition (Readers are Leaders Programme) and extra Maths tuition (CAMI Maths Programme) before or after school.

In 2019, teachers across the grades also arranged extra lessons after school for particular children identified as having barriers to learning.

A six week STEP Parent Education course was presented in the evenings by Mrs Bradford and Mr Leigh in Term 2.

This computer based programme is part of the weekly timetable & offers extension and general all-round improvement in Afrikaans & English languages. It has been run during school hours by Mrs Moodley, in the facility of the same name.

Afrikaans is currently taught from Gr 3-6 and English from Gr 2-6. Comprehension, memory, typing, sentence construction, new vocabulary & reading skills are tested.

With an end to encouraging enthusiastic participation and good marks, tuck shop vouchers were handed out to pupils achieving 100% for 5 completed story activities -a very effective strategy to date!

RAL is also available as an extra-mural activity run by Mrs Bradford & several volunteer staff members.

Thank you to Mrs Moodley, Mrs Bradford & the volunteers for all that you have done for the learners through this programme.

CAMI Maths Overseen by Mrs Moodley this support program which exists for those who need to cement certain Maths principles, offers extension as well, to those who are excelling in the subject.

This computer based programme is incorporated into the class’s schedules for 1/2 an hour every week.

Lessons begin with speed testing and marks are formally recorded, where after, awards are given out. These marks have a distinct bearing on the Cami Maths competitions which run in each grade.

The incentive ‘wall of fame’ exists for learners who have achieved the highest score for their speed test in their grade!

Maths exercises which are consistent with the CAPS curriculum content, follow on from the speed tests. The learners then graduate on to CAMI Perceptual which is an advanced module aimed at improving the pupils auditory & perceptual skills. There are many interactive aspects within this- such as mazes, puzzles, picture symmetry and the JP favourite - colouring in!

Cami Maths is also offered as an extra-mural activity overseen by Mrs Bradford. Much appreciation must be extended to both the above-mentioned ladies for their time and contribution.

Focus and Efficiency

In 2018, the main goal was to improve the infrastructure and provide and solid basis for further development. With this being achieved, we were able to focus on improving not only the backbone, but the day to day usage of our systems.

As we have made the decision to use Google’s G Suite set of products, we are slowly off of Microsoft’s Office, this has helped to reduce the number of moving parts in an already fairly complex system.

We have also added Papercut to our toolbox, which allows us to monitor the printing within the school. In 2018, between exams, worksheets, reports, notices and everything in between, we printed 1.1 million pages. Papercut allows us to see who is printing exactly how much, what they are printing and allows us to pinpoint and eliminate any wastage.

EdTech Strategy and Vision Workshop

It is often difficult for me, as a technical IT person, to align my vision and possibilities with those of the teachers, and for the teachers to understand what is possible with the technology we have available to us. We hosted a workshop for several members of staff that helped shape our vision for the future and a strategy to achieve it.

This year artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, Picasso, Georgia O”Keeffe and Helen Martins have inspired us. The grade 7 classes once again studied South African artists that this year included 2 local graffiti artists, Giffy Duminy and Shaun Oakley.

From rainbow fingerprint trees in grade 3, zentangled mixed media giraffe in grade 4 to highly detailed still life in pencil and chalk pastel in grade 7 we have done it all this year.

The annual art exhibition, complete with a rock edged river and waterfall, was this year entitled “Art Rocks” and showcased art across all grades. With rocks as our theme we painted Mandalas on rocks, produced San Rock art and used rock music instruments as subjects in grade 4 and 5. The evening was well attended as parents with, for the first time, their children, admired the art works on display. It was wonderful to see the excitement on the children’s faces as they showed off their artwork to their families. As always we were entertained by music from Anita Ruscoe on violin.

Funds raised from this evening will be used to purchase more display boards that will not only be used in the Art Dept but can be easily placed in the library or hall for other events eg open day and photographic displays.

Mid-year saw collaboration with the Music Dept and together we produced another “Art and Music in the Park”, aka Singing in the rain!!. For this the grades 6 and 7 painted canvases. Grade 6 were inspired by the beautifully simplistic art work of Lisa de John and grade 7 painted abstract canvases.

These were all displayed on the field and created a colourful entrance to the event.

Thanks to management for all the support you have given to the arts and culture.

If you hear a voice within you say “You cannot paint” Then by all means paint and that voice will be silenced.

The first term saw the music department starting 2019 off with a performance from the Senior Percussion group and Choir for OPEN DAY. The second term started in earnest with the various musical groups & hip-hop dancers preparing music from popular movies for the MUSIC & ART IN THE PARK concert. Songs included were “Eye of the Tiger” by Gr 4, Pirates of the Carribean, Harry Potter, Chariots of Fire, Star Wars to name but a few. Professional musicians featuring were Marion Loudon, Ingrid Pieterse, Evan Cullum, Glen & Andy Turrell, Grant Halliday & Sabelo Kasengwayo—as well as the Children from Quest School for the deaf. Unfortunately there was a cloud burst halfway through the event but the rest of the concert programme was showcased in the hall at the start of the 2nd Term.

The Gr 4 &5 Percussion group & Violin pupils opened up LITTLE DOLPHIN’S FUN RUN with their performance of Pirates of the Caribbean, Chariots of Fire and Harry Potter.

The 3rd Term featured young singing talent in the musical concert WALT DISNEY DELIGHTS beautifully produced & directed by Deputy Mrs Val Benjamin. The cast grasped a variety of songs in very short time.

The Senior Choir performed at the SCHOOL CHOIRS ROCK concert at the Durban City Hall with various other school choirs from around Durban.

In July, Atholl Voices opened the SPUR SINGING STARS competition at Apache Spur Durban North with their performance of the Cup Song and Faith with some pupils taking part in the individual singing competition. Sarah Tyhokolo from Atholl Heights won the round and took part in the final at Pavilion Spur in August.

The 4th Term Atholl voices did a FLASH-MOB performance at Talkhouse cafe in Westville Mall featuring the talented barista Sabelo Kasengwayo from the Talkhouse cafe.

All the musical groups worked hard in preparation for the various end of year Prize-givings.

Our Senior Choir and Atholl voices ended the year’s final musical performance at the annual CAROL SERVICE held on Tues 3rd December 2019.

Our main reading theme this year has been “Catch the Reading Wave” with the library being decorated in an “Under the Sea “ theme. We have had a submarine surrounded by swimming fish displayed together with sardines being spotted by our aeroplanes and choral “growing” on our display tree.

We have had quite a lot of fun with our children being challenged to “Reading Bingo”, where amongst other things they had to read in different areas such as under the kitchen table/counter, in the bath with no water only a blanket.

They needed to read to their grandparents. Read while wearing sunglasses.

During the Cricket World Cup, we had a small cricket display in the library. Mr Webber organized for Mr Lwandiswa Zuma, a Dolphins squad player to come and speak to our Senior Primary children. He was an amazing young man who our children can aspire to.

On the 19th September we celebrated World Pirate Day. Great fun was had by all. We even had a pirate ship in the library!

A very big thank you to the most amazing ladies, Mrs Cuerdon and Mrs Peters for always being willing to come in and help in the library. I am so grateful for everything you do for us. BOOKMUNCHERS Congratulations and well done to our 121 very special Bookmunchers who took up the challenge to read 40 books in 40 weeks. It is an extremely difficult task to take up and I am so proud of everyone of them. This challenge has been running for 8 years now, so our motto of “Atholl Heights is building a nation of readers” is certainly true.

Our annual CANSA Relay took place on the 26th July - a very memorable event. Thank you to everyone who helped and to the 2019 Bookmunchers and Library Monitors for selling approximately 3000 Luminaria bags, over R30,000 was donated to CANSA.

2019 was a great sporting year for Atholl Heights Primary School!

We have continued with cricket, mini-cricket, rugby, soccer, netball, baseball, hip-hop, hockey, cheerleading, cross country, athletics, tennis, swimming, softball, team 100, touch rugby, water polo, yoga and extra sports for Grade 1 and 2, all of which come with a tremendous amount of organisation.

An INTERHOUSE-CRICKET TOURNAMENT was introduced, which was a great success and the children thoroughly enjoyed it.

GIRLS SOCCER was a hit! Term 2 saw the first of our Senior Primary girls soccer matches, We had a large number of girls taking part.

There were swimming galas, athletic events & cross country races. We have once again participated in girls touch-rugby tournaments, which the girls have thoroughly enjoyed. We have also played Waterpolo matches this year. Our sport at Atholl Heights is competitively comparable to other schools.

Thanks to all our teachers and coaches who have given up their after-school hours and Saturdays to ensure that we can take part in school sporting events.

Without your help our sports year would not have been a resounding success.

Tennis: Congratulations to Grendon Cass for winning the 2019 Championships.

The championship was played on 31 October 2019 and was most enjoyable to watch.

Thank you very much to coach Mr Bell for organising these games.

Strikers Baseball: This season, Strikers battled a little. We gained a coach and lost him to personal obligations. Our U12 side was unable to field a side, leaving the U10 team to represent Strikers in KZN. Strikers is very proud to say that two U10 kids made the KZN team that travelled to Port Elizabeth for the Interprovincial Baseball Tournament this season.

We have to say thank you to Coach Anthony Lee as he has been coaching our kids without fail every season, installing in them a love of the game. Thanks to Stella Evans for managing.

We hope to see more of our AHPS kids at baseball this season, as this is such a beautiful game.

This was held on Friday 1st March. Our swimmers were so excited and swam their absolute best. We had spent many hours in the pool at PE and the children were ready to show off their skills. A big thanks must be given to Mr Bell and the Sports Department for their hard work.

SENIOR PRIMARY SWIMMING SQUAD Our swimmers were presented with a tough year, however every swimmer swam their absolute best and for that we are so proud of every single one! Our boys remain in the ‘A’ league for the D & D gala, our girls came a close second in the ‘C’ league.

A very big thank you must go to Miss Bonney and her team, who so willingly coaches our swimming squad. Miss Bonney braves the cold and dark mornings all year to ensure our swimmers get the adequate training that they need.

Each house was given the opportunity to show just how much spirit they had. As usual, the sportsmanship displayed was fantastic. We are proud of our Grade Three relay team for running so well against the other schools, they tied with Westville Junior Primary.

We had over sixty athletes attend the Ward Athletics trials at Gelofte and Berea West this year. We had a very strong showing in both track and field events. We would like to thank the children for all their hard work and the teachers for assisting with their training. You have made us so proud.

JP SPORTS TOURNAMENT Once again, our JP Sports tournaments were very successful. Our children were taught various sports throughout the year; Cricket, Netball, T-Ball, Rugby, Soccer, Hockey and Tennis. The children were given certificates based on how well their team did during the course of the morning. The tournaments have been a great success and we look forward to watching these young boys and girls grow into fine sportsmen and sportswomen.

PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB This club is open to Gr 6 and 7 learners and meets Tuesday and Wednesday after school in the Art Room.

The basics of camera settings are taught at the beginning of the year and this is followed by composition and lighting.

The club covered a variety of subjects including still life, garden, panning and bokeh. All sports photos taken by the club and Mrs Crawford were submitted to the sports dept. for use in their sports awards evening.

2 night-time shoots were undertaken this year. The first was “Playing with Fire� where we met in the school car park and experimented with lit steel wool and torches. The second was a very chilly and windy visit to the end of Methven near the nature reserve to photograph the night lights of traffic and New Germany. A walk in the local New Germany Nature Reserve produced many stunning photographs and also reminded us of how lucky we are to have an area such as this on our doorstep.

During the year 2 challenges were held. The learners were given a list of ideas/ subjects for the week. All subjects were open to interpretation and it was interesting to see the different points of view among the learners.

In the 4th term the best photographs had to be selected, printed and mounted. All this was undertaken by the learners themselves to show them just how much work goes into putting on an exhibition. This was indeed a creative and colourful exhibition during which a large photographic collage was presented to the school.

Grade 3 Arts and Crafts The year started out with a fun group of excited and enthusiastic Grade 3’s. On some days it was hard to tell if more art was done or more giggling! It was lovely to see all the new faces that joined us each term!

The learners were exposed to a variety of crafts such as card making, puppets, woven baskets, paper folding and various fun drawing activities.

The learners enjoyed putting their talents to use and some creative masterpieces were produced. Well done to all the Grade 3’s who came along.

Thank you to Miss Carless for her dedication and hard work over the years. in carrying on this activity group.

Besides some other sporting extra-murals, AHPS hosts many other cultural extra-murals.

Amongst these are Pottery, Cheer-stunting, Yoga, Ballet, Modern and Hip-Hop Dancing, Judo, Guitar, Violin, Gardening Club, Catrobatics, etc.

Also added to the list in 2019 was the introduction of a Garden Club— and Atholl’s own Scout Group also came into force.

‘I wanted to let you guys in on our achievements at the annual Highway District Cooking Competition. Our Meerkats participated as a team, our Cubs each went into a team with 1st Pinetown and our Scouts were given the task of making notes of the competition so that next year we can compete from a position of strength.

Although the Meerkats don't earn places, our Meerkats did really well and each made their own lunchbox. Our cubs were in the teams that came 1st and 3rd and they learned how together one has to be for a team to win.

I feel confident that we can participate in our own right next year. Our Scouts have a good understanding of the Scout level expectation and are confident that they will be able to do well next year. All three age-groups were judges by two professional chefs. Over all our kids were amazing - they did themselves proud’.

The Festival took place in April and May this year and was a great success. There was an enthusiastic participation of over 200 entries across the grades! Performing builds self-confidence, a creative imagination, and interpersonal skills, thereby empowering pupils.

Well done to all those who participated. There were 85 A and A+ for the JP’s and 86 for the SP’s. That is 75% for the Junior Primary and 73% for the Senior Primary—both well above average for the year.

A big thank you also to all the grade teachers for the contribution they made, ensuring, as always, that the work performed was of a very high standard. Thank you also to the parents for being supportive of all the children who rose to the challenge.

Much appreciation must go to Mrs Burmeister and Mrs van Heerden, our Speech and Drama Coordinators who organised and coordinated this event.

This new club is run by Mrs Georgie Noel, the school’s garden manager. It falls under the umbrella of the Eco Team run by Miss N. Buttignon and Mrs D. Crawford whose motto is ‘A GREEN SCHOOL FOR A GREENER PLANET’

Georgie teaches the pupils about respect for the environment, indigenous plants, planting from seed, make compost, using recycled water, identify plants, organic vs chemical, etc.

This year it was open to Gr 4 children only, but from next year, 2020, it will be extended to Gr 4 - 7 Children.

The top 15 artists from Grade 7 are invited to join.

What a talented (and very noisy) group they tuned out to be!!

Our next subject was MUSIC as the art and music dept. had collaborated to produce Art and Music in the Park.

Members were given carte blanche with this subject. This resulted in many different art forms including collage, mixed media, and acrylic on canvas and oil pastel pieces. The art work was then scanned and used for posters and programs for this event.

In the 3rd term all members received a journal, pencils and a list of subjects in a 30 day Pencil Drawing Challenge. The improvement in drawing techniques over the 30 days was impressive. Later in the term SOUTH AFRICAN INIDIGENOUS PLANTS were our subjects. The members had to reproduce the photos in 3 different media, oil pastel, chalk pastel and acrylic paint on canvas. All art work produced was shown in the art exhibition.

We started the year with acrylic paintings on canvas. Our subject was SOUTH AFRICAN ANIMAL that were painted in complementary colours. 10 of these were entered into the Highway Schools Art Competition held at Pinetown Girls High School. All entries received prizes. A proud moment indeed.

Members were introduced to ABSTRACT painting using palette knives, a first for all.

It was a scary moment indeed doing that first swipe on a new canvas but members soon got the hang of it and the trick was knowing when to stop.

A visit to the Westville Boys High matric Art Exhibition was inspiring to say the least.

To the Art Club of 2019 I would like to say, well done on your achievements this year, I will miss you and all the nonsense you got up to. It is my wish that you all continue with your art as you move onto high school next year. You all have talent – don’t waste it!!

Thank you Mrs Crawford for sharing your passion with the pupils.

This class this year has been a pleasure to teach; both thoughtful, committed and enthusiastic. We have as always had great times of vigorous discussion, fun and laughs, and serious question times about faith and the Christian life, and what the bible teaches.

We enjoyed topics such as the Creation story in Genesis, and the following characters of the book (Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Noah, Abraham) who teach us much about practical Christian character and faith. These lessons were aimed at helping the kids, as the senior learners, to follow in the same footsteps of faith, while being Christian examples to the younger learners of Atholl Heights.

GR 4 & 5: This was my 2nd year of taking Scripture Union. It warmed my heart so to see so many new faces from week to week. The pupils were keen to learn about God and Christianity and asked many questions. There were many prayer requests. They learned about;  the Bible and why it is an important tool as a Christian.  Jesus and how they as Christians can be like Jesus.  To pray ,& enjoyed doing so for their sick friends & family.

It was not ‘all work & no play’ as the programme included many games.

Thank you to the children who come & helped Scripture Union be a huge success.

Hindi and Tamil are offered as extra mural subjects on Friday after school.

This is held every Thursday in the AV Room from 10.00 – 10.30am. A group of mums volunteer their time on a rotational basis to conduct these classes.

We offer fun filled activities with learners. Learners also acquire knowledge about significant religious days observed. They also have the opportunity to explore their creative side by making various crafts. All learners of Atholl Heights are welcome and encouraged to attend.

2019 - a year in which our AHPS families really opened their hearts in a most generous way and responded to our ‘neverending’ requests for help and donations.

Vegetables were collected weekly which the staff have turned into nutritious soup. The Methodist Church Soup Kitchen in Pinetown has fed many hungry, displaced members of our society.

Our blanket project has provided comfort and warmth to those who might otherwise have been cold. 34 blankets were donated to the Highway Hospice, 54 to the Ukukhanye Home as well as children in the Chesterville area and 30 to Brightstars Creche in KwaMashu.

We have also started hosting a knitting morning once a term during which moms and grannies can become involved in this initiative, whilst enjoying tea and cake.

Collections of dog and cat food afforded us the opportunity to donate to three SPCA’s, feral cats at the Pavilion and Westville Mall, the dogs of Inanda and of course our own cat, Sugar.

Mandela Day was a huge success. Classes were very creative in their productions for charity. Food was collected and amongst the beneficiaries were The Junaid Foundation, The Vukukhanye Children’s Foster Home and childheaded households in the Chesterville area.

The collection of bottle tops and bread tags has gathered momentum and these have been gratefully received by the Disabled Society in exchange for wheelchairs.

55 Christmas boxes were created and given to the aged at at the Muthande Society for the Aged. These shoe boxes contained luxury and basic items .They were most appreciative and grateful.

Atholl’s Angels Outreach Programme

Atholl Heights Eco-Team ‘A GREEN SCHOOL FOR A GREENER PLANET’ We are very excited to have started our Eco-Team this year. Our vision is to foster a mind-set of looking after our immediate environment for the benefit of the world.

Every child should be fully involved in cleaning-up, recycling and caring for the environment for the sake of their futures as well as for generations to come. It is up to us as teachers and parents to set good examples. Children do not learn by listening to what we say but by emulating our actions. One person’s actions may not change the world but if we consider that we have almost 900 children in our school, plus their extended families - it amounts to thousands of hands helping to pick up litter, recycle plastic, paper, cans and more.

Suddenly - it makes a big impact on the environment.

Our projects this year have included recycling plastic, collecting milk bottles for the Kloof and Highway S.P.C.A., litter clean-ups and a beach clean-up. Our team was made up of Grade 6 children. The Gardening Club run by Georgie Noel has taught the children about indigenous plants, planting and caring for the environment. We are looking forward to next year’s Eco-Team projects which will hopefully set Atholl Heights Primary on the road to achieving our Green School Status with the WESSA School Programme.

The Maintenance team at Atholl, under the efficient supervision of Mr Storm does a wonderful job with the upkeep of the school - everything within its four walls / fences. The team is comprised of Derrick Biyela, Nicholas Zondi, Curtin Luthuli (Que), Elliot Mbele, Wiseman Phungula and Eric Biyela. Moses Mbulawa is the resident painter. They set the backdrop for all other functions to be carried out, especially sports. We are especially thankful to all of these men for their hard work around the school from early morning to late afternoon, and some weekends.

Besides the more obvious duties, there is photo-stating, scholar patrol, security, opening and closing facilities, stands and infrastructure set-up and collapse for sports event, gardening assistance, car-guarding, etc, etc. We are most appreciative of all the work that this team does to help all systems keep flowing seamlessly at the school. Thank you Mr Storm and caretakers.

This group continues to meet each Tuesday with Mr Wing and to pray for the various needs of the school and surrounding community.

We are part of an international group of Christian Moms who meet weekly and welcome any new Moms who would like to join us.

Last year we had one Mom leave for the U.K but this year we have gained two more Moms which is wonderful! I am so thankful to these ladies for their commitment each week and to Mr Wing for setting aside this time to spend with us. Prayer requests are treated with the strictest confidence and we are privileged to be able to pray for our lovely school.

Each year, this group put together a Carol Service with the help of Mrs Ruscoe from the Music department and Mrs Crawford who is our Art teacher. The evening was enjoyed by many parents, children and staff and is always such a beautiful way to end the year off. The last two years we have had children from Quest Bilingual School for the hearing impaired joining us for the Carol service. They are an absolute delight to watch and we are hoping they can be part of the evening this year once again.

Dear Atholl Families 2019 was a challenge for many and a turbulent year in the political and economic arena. We are always proud of our children, our families and our staff in the example they set of tenacity and excelling in the face of adversity.

Let this time where families gather together to reflect and re-assure one another of their love and commitment as a unit, also be an opportunity to be refreshed and to restore one’s faith in humanity and the future.

In an excerpt of the words of Max Ehrmann in his poem Desiderata, which I believe embodies a great approach to the season the pursuit of peace and harmony‌..

Go placidly amid the noise and haste And remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible without surrender Be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly; And listen to others, Even the dull and the ignorant They too have their story Yes, we can all play a role through this positive approach in making 2020 a more hopeful one for the greater human family baby steps in investing in a good legacy for our children.
