Piraeus Tower “Elevating public space”

T

he “Piraeus Tower” is a tall building situated at the port of Piraeus, which is the main port of the city of Athens. It is abandoned for more than 30 years, that is why it is called “The sleeping Giant”. So it is necessary to transform it into a landmark, not only for the port, but for the whole Athens. The main issue of our proposal was to make a public space above the level of the street in order to be intensified the vertical structure of skyscraper and to create a better view to the sea. Another effort was to redesign the skin of the tower as a bioclimatic structure which include all the new perspectives of saving energy, helping the coolness and shading of the building. We examine the differences between “Ground city” and “Sky city”. “Ground city” vs “Sky City”, two cities with a different approach of layout. At the ground citzy, zthe urban net is spreading horizontally, which has as a result a higher density of built parts and a rarefaction of voids. In opposition, the sky city is expanding vertically, which leaves bigger voids between the built parts and allows broader public spaces. The Attic urban plan is mainly drawn according to the model of low layout, which reduces the voids. The tower of Piraeus has been a part of this urban planning in an oxymoronic logic. Vertical and horizontal spread is observed at the same time. As a result

of the excessive horizontal spread, the Tower is almost unnoticed for people passing by. By contrast, it is more apparent to the visitor of the city when approaching from the sea. The main objective of this proposal is to restore the clear notion of skyscraper, by adding at the same time a new perspective for the user or visitor of the building. We bring the ground floor up to the third floor. A square is created, a new public space. By way of breaking the existing base from the first floor to the new square, we establish an open route that is directly connected to the arm of the jetty via a new bridge for pedestrians. On the sides of this course through the first two levels, public operations are developed, such as a library, an info box, an internet café etc. At the level of the square, a new entry is created, which leads to the first department of the Tower, where offices are accommodated. Then follows the hotel unit, the restaurant and the café, whose the reception lobby is placed in a green zone, which is extending in two consecutive levels and offering a better ventilation and segregation of the building s different operations. The existing framework is maintained and perimetric corridors are placed in each floor, which function as axes of circulation and shading. In each one of the building’s faces, we add separate protruding boxes as balconies, which define a new vertical layer of use, serving the main principle of delivering an “extrovert” tower, more open to the city underneath.

Parapera is a 1000 sq. Multiplex, housed in a preserved building, former residence of 1900, in the center of Athens, with a unique facade, after dominating Gothic - Islamic elements of castle architecture. The existing building which accommodates the functions of Multiplex consists of basement, courtyard, ground, first and second floor. The shell was maintained while the building reinforced internally using the static technique of ganite. So, each floor of 300 sq. has an open plan without columns at the inside. The existing building is at a corner of roads and has three entrances, one on each street, and one at the courtyard. The main entrance is at ground level while this from the other side leads to a staircase connecting the basement, the ground floor and the first floor. The courtyard communicates with the basement while with the other floors by an exterior staircase. An interior metal staircase connects the first and the second floor. The ground and first floor are designed independent stands to be used as a market of new authors, who sell their products periodically or permanently. At the basement and courtyard there is a restaurant, while the second floor with the terrace was de-

Reuse of a Preserved Residence

signed to use as a space for seminars. The single space without columns, gave a freeform flexibility without restrictions. So at two floors of agora, kiosks are bounded by pipes, adding an industrial style at the interior of the preserved shell. While plasterboards perimeter walls remained unpainted, highlighting a worksite environment in space. The materials used were recycled products and incorporated as partitions of pavilions old doors and windows of the building, allowing the building’s past to play a leading role at the new use. At the area of restaurant, elements like large surfaces with construction timber, visible electrical installations and unpainted concrete surfaces on the ceiling, create an unexpected, yet pleasant environment, to maintain - stored disparate furniture and the atmosphere of lounges and dining tables of old Athenian houses. The courtyard of parapera has been paved with old bricks of the ex-internal walls of the preserved. In the middle of the courtyard is a small garden with fragrant plants The key concern of the design of Multiplex was to respect the memory of the existing building through the function of the reuse of its own materials, giving them another use at the logic of the upcycling.

T

he historical town of Dubrovnik and its fortifications surrounded by the ditch make the city of Dubrovnik a very attractive tourist destination. The scarcity of space within the walls and the immense number of tourists visiting the city every year result in sky high property prices and difficulties for the inhabitants, as shopping becomes too expensive in the center. So there is a need to prevent the emigration to cheaper and less crowded towns, and to maintain life in the city beyond the tourist season. Human resource is what, above all, determines and forms the social and economic structures of a city. This is the main field around which data and decisions of an urban redesign should take place. People and their needs are the fundamental purpose for it, as an upgrade of an area is a key impact on the residents of the urban net. The process by which a redesign of existing site of the city’s fabric has as a result to reflect, in most cases, new spatial conditions. In our occasion the area that is proposed to be improved is located behind the old city, on the north side. This area can be regarded and designed as an entrance to the city. The “Centre Behind the City” area should facilitate everyday life in Dubrovnik and become a new meeting point for the citizens of Dubrovnik. Our effort is primarily focusing on creating an attractive site for Dubrovnik’s

residents. By adding much other functionality apart from the housing area, we have managed to construct a space where a resident could work, live, enjoy, etc. The main idea of our proposal is based on the view. The buildings outside the walls are organized in such a way (parallel) facing or the sea or the mountains, while the building in the old town seems to be more introvert, with no view, facing each other. First of all, we confront with the important problem of parking, by creating underground parking spaces in nearly all the area. In either sides of the main road, small market stores serve local community to their everyday needs while the simplicity of the design, their small size and the fact that their view is omnidirectional, make the stores able to adapt to various needs and uses, like bakery, pharmacy, butcher, hairdresser, grocery store, bookshop etc. To the west side and in contact with the road, there is the bus terminal for direct access of tourists, in the square that the bus terminal views, special umbrellas are collecting rain water for the needs of the area, while simultaneously shade the largest portion of the square. One level above the bus terminal, we meet another square, which is actually the back yards of the stores, as well as pathways with stops and trees. While still a level above, the old preserved site foto building is used as guest house. Finally, above the level of the guest house, there is the block of residences. This higher level of the west sides is the best spot for residences, protected and with magnificent view to all directions of Dubrovnik. On the east side and in similar policy as in the west side, there are many small stores, in parallel to the road. The main entrance to- the site wards this area is provided through a square. By elevating one level, we find another square which has a public building for cultural and community use, while in the center of the square there are grandstands where one could participate in projection events. behind the city

he proposed intervention is constructed in an abandoned storage building of 220 sq.m. located south-west of the archaeological park of Academia Platonos in Athens. The site was chosen in order to become a starting point for further similar interventions in a neighborhood which is continuously degraded. The proposed building programme includes the creation of workshop spaces, an exhibition space, a cafe, and an archive for books and audiovisual material on ecology and environmental issues. In addition, the proposed landscaping of the surrounding areas of the building aim to expand indoor activities towards the exterior through careful interventions. More specifically, the adjacent roads are transformed in to pedestrian routes, while a part of the opposite vacant site is used for outdoor workshops whose work benches serve as recycling depositories. The preservation of the existing shell was decided aiming at the lowest possible consumption of energy and financial resources. The structural system of the new construction consists of a metal frame which carries the building shell and supports two additional levels which are made of prefabricated materials. by vertical wooden elements that can be opened at certain points in order to increase solar gains and to achieve natural ventilation and cooling of the interior. Photovoltaic panels are mounted on the roof in order to generate electricity. In the interior, compressed newspapers are used as insulation material for the whole building. The modification of the selected building could become an example of bioclimatic architectural design aiming at the improvement of the existing abandoned industrial buildings in the area.

he study concerns the extension and joining of two houses in Arachova. Arachova is a winter resort near Athens, built at the foot of Mount Parnassos, one of the largest and well organized mountains for winter sports. The owner bought two three-storey houses built in the traditional architecture of the region, in a 3,60 meter distance with each other . Wanting to have a single home and roomy enough to be able to host friends and be comfortable to live with his family on holiday, he decided to expand the two houses by adding a three-story from each side and merge them by a new one between them. The aim was to produce a prestigious building, protected from the weather, as primarily intended for use during the winter months. So all functions organized inside. The new house has a total area 1415 sqm. Due to its large size are kept the two entrances and the interior function of the building are organized so they can be used as two independent houses at will. The main entrances are located on the first floor where one can be led by grand staircases from the garden. The house is divided into two wings, each of which consists of the old building and the addition of, and between the two wings is the intermediate building addition. floor, it is possible the two wings to be joined or separated by sliding doors. On the first floor are developed the public uses of residence. Each wing has a large kitchen, a dining room and lounge, the intermediate section at this level houses a private cinema of ten seats. On the ground floor at the part of the old residential there are guest rooms, while at the additions are developed various activities such as spa, game room, parking etc. The intermediate section at this level houses a private gym. On the second floor of the west wing are the private spaces of the owners. A large master bedroom and a children’s bedroom. In the intermediate section of this floor there are a private workplace and a reading place which are connected by a bridge. Here is the place where the owner can be isolated admiring the majestic mountains of Parnassos. For greater privacy, the access to can be done only through the master bedroom. The east wing of second floor has three guest rooms and a perimetric balcony, with a view at the bottom storey, leads to a private library.

ehabilitation/reuse is an effort to give a new life in an old structure, by a way of using its benefits for the new use and at the same time reflect the coexistence of both. At this personal project was tried to make a proposal for an easy, fast, low cost but most of all ecological and bioclimatic resident. As shell is used a shipping container. The main reason is its pure, rectangular volume and the challenge to insert such a different use. Metaphorically the normal use of shipping container to transfer product is transformed to a residence for the accomodation of people. The main effort was to give a global solution for someone who wanted to place his container house into his site and give a freedom in design that can be changed depending on the orientation of the area and sightings. At the ground floor is used a container 12*3m. which accommodate the living room, the kitchen, the bathroom and a bedroom. The interior design follows a linear structure because of the existing volume. New windows and a sliding door give the sense of a real house. At the upper level a smaller shipping container (the half, 6 * 3 m.) has an open plan and obtain a master bedroom and an office. This upper vol- possibility of rotation of the upper container based ume has been rotated and relied on the on orientation and viewing options underside. “Convert a shipping container to a residence”

container is used as a roof garden. In the interior is used insulation and all the walls are covered with wood or industrial panels. Outdoors the container’s skin is maintained to reflect the old use. Upcycling is a way of live, of consume, of save energy and money, why not being a way of housing. It’s the way of taking a useless for us thing and transform it to something useful and unique.

he proposal was based on the need for a general renewal of the interior of an existing hair studio. The owners wanted to create an environment where customers feel the renewal of space as a personal surprise and pleasure. So a key element of the interior design is the surprise by different disparate corners into a neutral background. Into the interior of the salon enter a Box in bright color, at the logic of “Box Into a Box”. This Box contains a new service of the salon, the aesthetic and cosmetology, which was necessary be served into a special space with the ability to open and close from the rest of the space. The main axis of the movement into the space is highlighted by a hallway with tiled chessboard in width of 80 cm, which starts from the entrance and ends to the upper level of the salon freely. The rest of the flooring coated with forged cement in gray color. For the background of the space have been proposed shades of white and gray with elements of wooden beams so as to pay attention to the strong elements which are established in corners at the space and are the surprise elements.

he renovation concerns a ground floor residence 46 sq. with courtyard, for a single man. The chosen style for the interior is the industrial. The age of the house did not allow to demolish interior walls and change the position of the rooms. The only that removed was a part of the separating wall of the kitchen from the living room to open up the space visually. Almost the entire floor covered with forged cement while metal constructions with wooden covering are dominated. In the living room is suggested a built sofa and a large wall with blackboard. While in a corner a structure which serves like a bar or dining table. At this corner the floor coated with cement tiles with patchwork design which seems like old and emphasize the industrial style of the proposal. The same covering continues in a zone of 40cm in front of the corner of the kitchen worktop. At the kitchen the old marble sink is retained and the wall is coated with decorative white bricks. The bedroom is separated from the rest by a sliding wooden door. Into this room are followed simple minimal lines. A built bed in front of a wall with bare bricks, and a DIY construction for owner’s morning gym in front of a wall with a footprint of an urban map. In the courtyard was placed a built bench and a partition so as to isolate optically the courtyard from the entrance of the other inhabitants of the appartments above.

he project _‘Cartables et boules de gommes’ wants to create a link between the various built surrounding neighborhoods and the village of Gletterens. By its geometry, it shows and accentuates the orthogonality of the existing school and creates a harmonious whole. The determinants to integrate and enhance the site elements are: - The Northwest façade is aligned to the existing school, to create a united front, clear and legible face to the main road. - The North-East façade of the project is ‘degraded’. This is to link and facilitate cohesion between random geometry of the near house . - The South-East side of the gym that clearly delineates the school complex, while respecting the geometry and massing of near buildings. - The South West facing is proposed between the existing school and the gym, here is the new courtyard with the main entrance for students and users of the gym and entertainment hall. Added to this is the imperative desire to create with the existing school, a clear and easily readable school complex. The three faces of the buildings turned to a main court are almost wholly transparent so as to be allowed an easy and clear reading of the various volumes and uses.

Extension of school

The new building 2 ‘Extension of School’ at right and contiguous to the existing school angle, wants to create synergies by sharing vertical linkages and creating large common interior spaces. The Building 3 ‘Gym’ is semi-buried and allows, therefore, a relative proximity to the existing school. This proximity creates the necessary framework to define the new home court. Several access new school complex allow opening ‘on several faces. The main staircase and lift connect adjoining the entrance with, the basement, gym and locker rooms in the shelter, as well as upstairs with classes.
