Developing global citizens through education abroad experiences is a core component of Athena’s mission. Athena developed S.O.S. to ensure that charity is incorporated at the heart of our programs, students, and organization. www.AthenaAbroad.com
Athena works to make a big world accessible through affordable, smaller programs abroad. At Athena, we are committed to small.

FAMILY BUSINESS SINCE 2005 Athena’s focus on personalized programs and service makes perfect sense since we are a family business! Stacy founded Athena in 2005 after working in the international education field for years. She noticed study abroad students would benefit from an organization focused on immersion and smaller, personalized overseas experiences ... so she created one. A few years later, her husband John joined Athena full-time and there has been no stopping this globe-trotting duo ever since! 5

Why the Name ATHENA?
We are named after Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom. She represents the wisdom and strength that study abroad students gain while abroad. Wisdom comes from applying experiences to knowledge and this is just what study abroad accomplishes.
What are ATHENA’s Values?
Athena is a different type of partner. You can see this difference in our values:
1. Excellence in Study Abroad. 2. Small is Better. 3. Richness in Partner Relationships. 4. Quality over Quantity. 5. We Will Change the World. Read more at OurStory.AthenaAbroad.com.
In Greek mythology the owl traditionally represents or accompanies Athena, the Goddess of Wisdom.

“Studying abroad has shown me
just how more accepting some other countries can be... [my experiences in Japan] made me want to pass that universal kindness on to others...”
When one thinks of Japan they usually first think of Tokyo. And for good reason! This city is unlike any other. As one of the largest cities in the world, its ability to merge Japanese pop culture and traditional Japan creates an architectural hybrid city that showcases the ultramodern with neon-lit skyscrapers, and historic with its temples. In contrast, Kyoto is a Japanese city that calls back to its historical and traditional roots. Students will be able to experience Kyoto during July, its Gion Festival month. The festival gives you a glimpse into the enchanting traditional Japan.

Africa is immense: the second largest continent, 54 countries, 1.2 billion people. But Athena’s Kenya program is an intimate, personalized introduction to Africa. Our Kenya program is split evenly between Brackenhurst, an eco-campus in Limuru, and the Maasai Mara Conservancies. Brackenhurst, 23 miles north of Nairobi in rolling hills, is home to amazing animals and more than 1000 species of plants, many endangered or extinct in their original areas. An optional coastal module add-on is at Watamu Marine National Park (for an extra fee).

Quito is one of the world’s most overlooked gems. South American, European and indigenous elements infuse the city. This is why UNESCO - a primary authority on recognizing locations of significance - declared the capital of Quito as the very first World Heritage site. The Old City is rich with history, charming windy streets, and excellent shopping and eating. Quito is a marvelous contemporary city with all the modern amenities you would expect in the U.S. But the main reason Quito is so great: the people. Ecuadorians are warm, honest and service-oriented people who truly enjoy welcoming foreign visitors to their country.

It’s like a city in the clouds. Quite literally. Cusco sits perched amidst the clouds and the lush Andean greenery 11,000 feet above sea level. According to legend, a mythical monarch founded the city of Cusco at the beginning of the 13th century BC. Under Incan rule, the empire grew and developed. You will recognize that today the city is surrounded by the wealth of its Incan history, while offering the comforts of a modern and internationally known town. Cusco’s people are welcoming and proud of their rich culture. This truly is an exciting place to live, enjoy, and learn Spanish.

WHAT ATHENA’S ABERDEEN TAUGHT ME
When you’re at the heart of Old Aberdeen, you feel like you’re on the set of Harry Potter, surrounded by Gothic buildings and archways. The city is truly a melting pot of the old and new, combining history and modernity in one. You’re in for a treat. Florence is one of the most popular places to study abroad for a reason. The art, the culture, the incredible historic city streets - it becomes part of you while you are there. Florence was the heart of the Italian Renaissance, where artists such as Michaelangelo and DaVinci roamed the streets. Before that, Florence was a Medieval powerhouse. These two eras’ distinct vibes live on through the priceless works of art and incredible architecture that you will take in, as you stroll the cobblestone streets. CITY PERKS: Tons to do without big-city hassles ... easy travel to other European gems.

Have you ever been amazed, inspired and awed by something so much you thought your head might explode? It’s sort of like that. Yes, Rome has the history. The Colosseum, the Forum, the Vatican. But it’s not a museum, it’s living. The bustling city embraces these large monuments of history, and doesn’t tear them down. It’s everyday life in Rome to live amongst the history most can only read about in books. While you wander through the open-air markets and outdoor cafés of the city’s wealth of piazzas, it becomes evident that Rome continues to make history, and you have the privilege to be part of it!

WHY I CHOSE ATHENA
“
I chose Athena because I heard the program was small and personable like my home college.”
Time traveling back to a simpler time. That’s what Tuscania’s like, and it’s incredible. The city walls call back to a previous royal era, the town’s 7th-century church is still in use, and the population of 8,000 brings a sense of community that you didn’t know still existed. It’s absolutely charming. Also, Tuscania is not far from Rome, as this medieval town is nestled in the Italian hillside about an hour and 20 minutes north of the capital city. TOWN PERKS: A place that has inspired artists for centuries, Tuscania has developed a reputation for new artistic forms of expression including film, art, architecture, and more.

But the common themes throughout each location are: strong sense of community, incredible historical ties and excellent academics! You will start off as part of the small town Tuscania, which gives a rich feel of rural Italy. Then, you will stay for a month in Rome, Italy’s largest and most historical city. You will end your semester in Florence, a medium-sized city with world-renowned charm for its Renaissance role.

Incredible. That’s what it’s like. Barcelona is a one-of-akind city, truly one of the great cities of the world. The vibe of the city is young and fresh. Located in the northeastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula, Barcelona is a great place for you to spend a summer, semester or an academic year. It’s one of the most popular cities to study abroad in, so there are many international students in the area. The city is large, but not massive or overwhelming, so it is great for study abroad.

Most short-term programs are pre-structured for you, including items such as field trips, extra courses, homestays, and in some cases, upgraded housing.

We recognize that while these inclusions are helpful for many, the extra cost associated with these can prevent some from going abroad. So, Athena has decided to do something different and put you in the driver’s seat... Enrich your experience abroad and boost your resume with an internship. We’ve put together a wide variety of internships at several locations.
FOR-CREDIT INTERNSHIPS
www.AthenaAbroad.com
The internships that we have at Athena are for-credit and are done alongside a regular course of study. So rather than being paid, you will receive credits for the work you do, and gain international working experience - something that is in high demand, and only gaining steam!
HOW IT WORKS First, you apply to the program you wish to attend. If you are accepted, then you will be directed to an intern-specific application, which can vary depending on the program. Typically, you will submit a resume and do either an in-person or written interview so we can match you with your best fit. Please note that internship deadlines may be sooner that the standard deadline so be sure to apply early! See Intern.AthenaAbroad.com for more information.
Volunteering is an important part of our mission at Athena, and we want to make every opportunity available to our students to volunteer abroad. Please help give back to the world that gives us so much! Contact us for more details.

We at Athena know that costs and finances are typically at the heart of the question “can I study abroad?” Athena is committed to working to figure out more ways to make study abroad as accessible to students as possible, and the Price Freeze is our most recent initiative aimed to help our students! –– Athena’s “Price Freeze” feature allows you to freeze the current published cost of the location and term of your desired study abroad program for up to 24 months! Because prices can change from year to year, this offers one more way for you to lock in your program price and to budget accordingly for programs in the future. And the best part is you don’t have to do anything special to get this offer! Just start an application and pay your application fee!
There’s a buzz about Athena! From being the only study abroad organization to be recognized by international offices for FIVE straight years as a GoAbroad.com People’s Choice selection, to receiving international recognition in being named winner of the “Enlightened Employer” award at the Women in International Education awards in Berlin, to enhancing the lives of people in the global and local community, there’s always “much ado” about Athena!
