Introduction: Personalised Stamps or P-stamps are stamps that a customer can have an image or photo printed on the stamp or on an attached tab. (To be classed as ‘P-stamps’, the general public must be able to have their photo or image on the stamp or tab.) This tab is called a “photo tab” if it contains a photograph. If there are no perforation holes between the stamp and the tab it is called an “integrated tab”. Australia Post produces many sheets of stamps with tabs. The tab can contain a photo, picture, graphic image or a ‘generic’ person’s photo on the tab (usually an Australia Post employee). See Sheets with Tabs, below. P-stamps are produced by Australia Post’s Personalised Stamps Service. There have been 3 types of P-stamps produced to date: Type 1: Gummed stamps with a tab separated by perforations. Type 2: Semi-imperforate self-adhesive stamps with an integrated tab. Type 3: Stamps with a customer’s image or photo within the stamp image. Type 1 and Type 2 have the customer’s image or photo on the tab. The majority of Personalised Stamps have a customer’s photo rather than a graphic image. P-stamps are produced in a range of products, such as sheets and booklets and even a single ‘stamplet’! The original P-stamps were made at the “Australia ‘99 Word Stamp Expo” in Melbourne on 19th March 1999. Customers could have their photo taken by the Mobile P-stamp Facility and this was printed on a tab on the left side of a 45c ‘Polly Woodside’ Sailing Ships stamp.

Initially the tabs were either on the left or right of the stamp and were of various sizes. The original P-stamp tab was 16mm wide – called a “narrow” tab. This was changed to a 20mm “wide” tab in May 2000 and some were 23.5mm “extra wide”. They were printed on sheets with a large decorative border. P-stamps could be ordered by mail and eventually on-line from the Australia Post Personalised Stamps website. From 2006 some tabs have been printed above and/or below the stamp. e.g. ‘Socceroos’ 2006. Sometimes the graphic image on the tab was an ‘extension’ of the stamp image. e.g. ‘Colour My Day’ 2001. Some tabs have also contained images of stamps – including unreleased and previously released stamps and even stamps from other countries! e.g. ‘Launpex’ 2009, ‘KGV’ 2012, ‘Formula 1 Legends’ 2006. In 2012 Australia Post even released sheetlets of stamps with 2 tabs attached! e.g. ‘Nickelodeon’ 2012.

On 22nd March 2005 the ‘Marking the Occasion’ set of stamps was made available as self-adhesive P-stamps with an integrated tab on the right. The tab is rectangular in ‘portrait’ layout and its right side is imperforate. They are printed in sheets of 20 stamps. This format has become the most common P-stamp and they were ordered online from Australia Post’s eLetter Solutions Department in Essendon, Melbourne. Sometimes the right side of the stamp image had a full or partial printed simulated perforation.

P6

On 21st April 2005 P-stamps were issued in a prestige booklet for the first time. Fuji Xerox Australia’s ‘DocuColour 8000’ Digital Press was at the Pacific Explorer World Stamp Expo in Sydney. It was used to produce a Snapshot! Booklet containing gummed stamps with square photo tabs. The stamps were from the World Heritage Australia – UK Joint Issue. This was repeated on 15th March 2006 for the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. This time the Pstamps were semi-imperforate self-adhesives with an integrated square photo tab. The stamp was a 50c Games Logo stamp with a printed perforation on the right side.

At the World Stamp Expo in Melbourne on 10 May 2013 the first P-stamps were issued with the customer’s image or photo incorporated into the stamp. These stamps did not have a tab. They were available in 8 different formats as P-stamps or with a ‘generic’ photo. • • • •

Two stamps of a similar design were later released in November with an image of the Royal Exhibition Building, Melbourne in place of the customer’s photo. They were in a minisheet included with the 2013 Annual Mint Collection. Despite the title on the minisheet they were not Personalised Stamps! 4

Sheets with Tabs: Gummed Stamps Australia Post produces two types of sheets (or sheetlets) of gummed stamps with tabs. • •

Souvenir Stamp Sheet (SSS). This is a sheet made for a particular stamp or theme. Special Event Sheet (SES). This is an SSS related to an event.

Both types may be either issued by Australia Post or ordered by a private organisation. The sheets can contain 1, 2 or 3 types of tabs. 1. Tabs related to the stamp, theme or event. Tabs may all be the same or different. 2. All tabs containing a ‘generic’ image of an Australia Post employee. 3. P-stamps with the same image or photo on all tabs. With many gummed SSSs designed and produced by Australia Post you could send an image or photo to Australia Post’s Personalised Stamps Service to order and receive a sheet of Pstamps. Most of these were issued with Type 1 and Type 3 tabs. If a Type 2 tab was offered usually a Type 3 tab was also available. Recently most sheets only have Type 1 tabs. The sheets designed and ordered by a private organisation may be made available to the general public – especially if they relate to a public event. Those people attending the event may be able to purchase the sheets at the event. The sheet usually has a special border and the (Type 1) tabs have specific images related to the event. These stamps are not P-stamps. Often the Mobile P-stamp Facility is at special events and the general public may have their image or photo printed on the tabs of an SES to produce P-stamps. (See Appendix: Stamp News, April 2011, ‘Australian Open Tennis’ Special Event Sheet.) $1 Koala overprinted stamp with different tabs

Type 1 – “Greetings” Text Tab

Type 2 – ‘Generic’ Tab (Angela Thom)

Type 3 – P-stamp

Type 1 – Private SES (25 Sep 2001) th (75 Anniversary of Airmail to Pacific Islands)

Self-adhesive Stamps Australia Post currently only produces one type of sheet of self-adhesive stamps with tabs. Customers may send their images or photos to the Personalised Stamps Service to order and receive a sheet of 20 P-stamps. Only Type 3 tabs are available on these sheets. (See Zodiac set on Page 1 and image P6 on Page 4.) 7

Snapshot! Booklets Snapshot! Booklets are prestige booklets that contain P-stamps. They were produced by Fuji Xerox Australia’s ‘DocuColour 8000’ Digital Press at the Pacific Explorer World Stamp Expo in Sydney in 2005 and at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in 2006. They were also available with (Type 2) ‘generic’ photo tabs of an Australia Post employee. The Pacific Explorer booklet was issued on 21st April 2005. It contained 5 pages with gummed and self-adhesive stamps: • • • • •

2 x 50c/$1 vertical se-tenant pairs of ‘World Heritage (Australia–UK)’ stamps with square photo tabs 2 x 50c/$1.80 vertical se-tenant pairs of ‘World Heritage (Australia–UK)’ stamps with square photo tabs 5 x 50c & $1 se-tenant block of 6 ‘Creatures of the Slime’ stamps 50c ‘Centenary of Rotary International’ self-adhesive stamp 50c & $2.45 ‘First Australian Coin’ se-tenant pair

This was the first time square gummed photo tabs were released. The Commonwealth Games booklet was issued on 15th March 2006. It contained 6 pages with gummed and self-adhesive stamps: • • • •

4 x 50c ‘Games Logo’ self-adhesive stamps with square photo tabs – 2 pages Block of 4 x 50c ‘Games Logo’ self-adhesive stamps – 2 pages 50c stamp + $1.25 & $1.85 se-tenant pair of ‘Commonwealth Games’ stamps 2 x 45c, $1 & $2 se-tenant block of ‘World Heritage Sites’ stamps

This was the first time square self-adhesive integrated photo tabs were released. At the Commonwealth Games I managed to buy a ‘dual’ Snapshot! Booklet. It was printed by Australia Post's Mobile P-stamp Facility alongside the River Yarra on 22nd March 2006. I asked for this dual booklet before it went through the final manual guillotine process.

8

The Stamplet On 3rd December 2010 the first ‘stamplet’ was released. It was a small sheetlet with a single 60c National Service Memorial stamp and a tab above the stamp. It was included in the National Service Stamplet Pack together with a plain sheetlet of ten 60c National Service Memorial stamps that was originally issued on 8th September 2010. This Pack was one of the 2010 ‘Impressions’ range of products. It cost $15.95. The stamplet was printed by McKellar Renown using a dry, toner-based digital printer. It was 55 x 55mm in size. The tab could be personalised by Servicemen by sending an order form to Australia Post. The Serviceman’s Name, Rank and Serial Number were then printed on the tab. This cost $19.95. I have contacted the National Servicemen’s Association, Australia Post’s Philatelic Bureau and McKellar Renown Press and have not been able to find out if any of these P-stamps were ordered or printed! I therefore assume that if any exist they must be extremely scarce.

This image of the Stamplet P-stamp was copied from the front page of the Order Form.

David Mallen’s Personalised Stamps 2005 to 2010 Semi-imperforate self-adhesive P-stamps with integrated tabs This type of P-stamp was first released on 22nd March 2005. They cost about 65c above face value and were supplied in sheets of 20 stamps. Some have printed perforations. I supplied these to many Australian and overseas collectors. I designed the tab image to compliment the stamp and the theme of the issue. (In September 2005 I received advice from Australia Post that copying the stamp image onto the tab was not allowed! I ‘tested’ this in July 2009 with a reverse stamp image on the tab. This was not queried.) A 2006 stamp and a 2007 stamp were still available as P-stamps in 2016, so I designed a new tab for these. I have added these ‘reprints’ to my collection. Snapshot! Booklet P-stamps At the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Australia Post released its second Snapshot! Booklet. It was issued on 15th March 2006 and contained 6 pages with gummed and selfadhesive stamps. Two pages had 4 x 50c ‘Games Logo’ self-adhesive stamps with square integrated photo tabs. This was the first time square self-adhesive photo tabs were released. The booklets were produced by Fuji Xerox Australia’s ‘DocuColour 8000’ Digital Press at the Australia Post Shop alongside the River Yarra. A booklet with a ‘generic’ photo of an Australia Post employee was also available. I bought my booklets on 22nd March 2006 and have included their special P-stamps in my collection.

2009 Christmas Tree P-stamp Error [ Embedded Printer Codes Revealed ]

The original 5th November 2009 printing of the sheet of 20 Christmas P-stamps had an error. The “50c” and “AUSTRALIA” were missing from Christmas Tree stamp at bottom right.

Christmas “sticker”

Light green 50c on the second reprint Replacement sheets, printed on 8th December 2009, were sent to customers free of charge accompanied by an apology letter. These reprints differed from the originals. They had a ‘smoother’, more uniform printing and a light green “50c”. The original issue had ‘speckled’ printing and a green “50c”. Embedded in the image of stamps on the sheet is a matrix of yellow dots (almost invisible to the naked eye) that reveal the actual date of printing. Using my USB microscope I have scanned the 3 different sheets I received and discovered 3 different dates. I have changed the hue on these images from the original yellow-on-white to green-on-violet to make the dots stand out. 3 printings: • • •

The original with the Christmas Tree error was printed on 5th November 2009 The first reprint with no error (and green 50c) was printed on 30th November 2009 The second reprint with no error (and light green 50c) was printed on 8th December 2009 35

Images of the embedded codes. (White text and numbers superimposed.)

The stamps were issued on 2nd November and could not be ordered before this date. A picture of the original printing with the Christmas Tree error appeared on the back page of the November - December Stamp Bulletin that was published in October 2009. I suspect it was a copy of an electronic file, not a scanned image of a printed sheet. The yellow dots can be seen using a microscope under white light. They appear black under blue (not UV) light. If your microscope has a hue adjustment you can use this to make them clearer per the above 3 photos. They are all over the sheet of stamps. Some dots are hidden by the design so you have to find others that match the code pattern so you can interpret the code. See the blue and yellow picture on how to crack the code. It reveals the time and date of the actual printing (when the paper went through the machine) and the printing machine’s serial number. More information at: http://w2.eff.org/Privacy/printers/docucolor/ I wonder how many other stamps have these codes. I suspect they restricted to P-stamps and other digitally-printed stamps. I have seen an image of the photo tab on the 45c Polly Woodside sheetlet – Australia’s first personalised stamp available at the “Australia ‘99” Stamp Expo. It is covered in yellow dots! 25 Dec 2009 36

Editor’s Mailbag

Dear Editor Here is yet more proof how philately widens one’s horizons and how reading stamp magazines contributes to this pleasure. While spending February in Andalusia, my wife and I wanted to learn more about the Duke of Medina Sidonia, the ill-fated commander of the Spanish Armada. (Last autumn, we had been to several sites on the west

coast of Ireland where Armada wrecks had been discovered.) While looking in vain for a monument to the duke in the charming town of Medina Sidonia, we came upon a bronze bust with a hard-toread inscription. A kind bystander explained to us that it represented the “inventor of the postcard.” My wife took a photograph of the bust as a reference

because, knowing the Austrian version of the history of the postcard (and its invention by Dr. Emanuel Herrmann), we looked forward to learning more about the Spanish version. Last night, returning to our home in France and emptying the full mailbox, we found and immediately opened your February issue, which had been sent to us by our good friend Peter Pollany of Elwood, Vic. Immediately we had more interesting information on “Dr. Thebussem” than we ever dreamt of finding on Google!

Thank you! Heinz Patzak Feucherolles, France P.S. The photo of the monument was taken by my wife, Roswitha Patzak. Dear Editor Have I created philatelic history? As you know the ‘eLetter Solutions’ division of Australia Post provides a Personalised Stamp service at selected special events. This involves taking customer’s photos and printing them

on the tabs of Special Event Sheets (SES). These sheets are gummed and contain a block of 10 “generic base stock” stamps with ‘personalised’ tabs on the right. Yesterday (19th January 2011) at the Australian Tennis Open I visited the Australia Post shop and asked if they would print an image on the tab rather than my photo. The photographer said, “I can’t see why not.” So I selected a postcard off the shelf and handed it to him. He said they would give it a go when they were not so busy and asked me to call back later. I went and watched Henin, Roddick and Williams win their matches in Rod Laver Arena and returned 7 hours later. They had succeeded. Two sheets were on display and six in a folder marked with my name. I asked how they did it and they said they put a box on a chair in front of the camera and attached the postcard on the front with ‘Blu-Tack’! While I was paying for 6 sheets, a person

was served next to me and asked for 2 sheets with the “Melbourne image”. When I went to collect my sheets the photographer said he had just given 2 sheets to someone else and is printing two replacement sheets for me. So I know there are at least 10 sheets in existence. (The 2 display sheets were stuck onto a cardboard backing and attached to the wall with ‘BluTack’.) I have never heard or seen an SES without a customer’s photo before. I believe this is the first SES with an image instead of a photo on the tab. See attached pictures. (Note that

customer’s images – and photos – on the tab have always been available on the sheets of 20 semi-imperforate self-adhesive stamps available from Australia Post’s Personalised Stamps website.) I have a list of all Australian Personalised Stamps (P-stamps) on my website. (http://www.asv.net.

au/information/Pstamp%20list.pdf) As you know P-stamps were invented by Australia Post and were first available at the ‘Australia ’99 Stamp Expo’ in Melbourne on 19th March 1999. These sheets had 10 x 45c Polly Woodside (Sailing Ships) stamps with a customer’s photo tab on the left. Stamp News - 7

The next Special Event Sheet issued after the Expo was at the ‘International Guide Jamboree 2000’ held on 2nd January 2000 at Dakabin in Queensland. It had 10 x 45c Fireworks with hologram (Celebrate 2000) stamps with tabs on the right. Regards, David Mallen Update 2 March 2011 I have had my special Australian Tennis Open SES reprinted! I asked 8 - Stamp News

Fuji at Australia Post’s eLetter Solutions Department in Essendon if they could find the original tab image of the Melbourne postcard and print some more SES’s for me. This was done on their printer, not the same one that is used with the Mobile P-stamp Facility at events. The

sheets were printed on 24th February – well after the event finished. I believe this is the first time SESs have been printed once the event has finished. You will see from the attached images that the reprinted sheet, stamps and tabs are quite different from the ones printed at the Tennis

event. (See the images attached to my original email of 20th January.) The new tab image is clearer but has been offset and overlaps the stamp perforation. I didn’t expect it but they have also created a new (blue) 60c Southern Cross stamp variation! David Mallen

The $1 grey koala stamp first appeared in the 'Personal Greetings' set issued in September 1999. It was issued in sheets of 20 stamps with a tab attached. This stamp has an intriguing history that was complicated by different tab sizes and an unannounced International POST overprint. The overprinted stamp was not available over the counter at Post Offices nor was it included in the 2000 Annual Collection. As well as being sold with 3 different tabs, it was also used on Special Event Sheets ordered by private organisations. Market prices currently exceed $1000 for some sheets of 20 stamps and $50 for a single stamp with tab attached.

First Issue 1

This $1 stamp was first issued on 1' September 1999 as part of the Personal Greetings set. The other 6 stamps in this set were all 45c. (See 'Personal Greetings' Stamp Issues table.) All stamps had 16mm narrow 'text' tabs, except the 45c Christmas Decoration that had an extra wide 23.5mm tab. They were issued in sheets of 20 stamps in two different formats: Sheets with a normal width selvedge (available at Post Offices) and Souvenir Stamp Sheets (SSS) with a large decorative border and "Greetings" title in the top left corner (available from Philatelic Mail Order). The SSSs could also have the 'text' tabs replaced with a customer's photo

*Incorrect Issue Date In the Australia Post Stamp Printing Technical Details books, the International POST overprinted $1 Koala is shown in the 2001 book on Page 14 and again in the 2002 book on Page 5. The issue date of 1" February 2001 quoted is incorrect. This incorrect date is also found in some catalogues. The 1" February 2001 was the date that use of'GST-free' International stamps became mandatory for overseas postage.

First Reprint On l9 1h June 2000, the SSSs were re-released by Philatelic Mail Order. The width of the tab was

David Mallen changed to 20mm in line with the general change in photo tab aspect ratio. All stamps of the Personal Greetings set (and the 45c Polly Woodside "Best Wishes" SSS) were part of this reprint release, except the 45c Christmas stamp. A third tab variation was made available for the first time. Instead of a 'text' tab, Philatelic Mail Order offered SS Ss with a photo of Australia Post staff member, Angela Thorn, on the tab. Her photo became known as the 'generic' tab. P-stamps sheets with the wider tabs were also available from the Personalised Stamp service.

International POST Overprint A Goods & Services Tax (GST) was introduced on 1st July 2000 but International post was exempt from this tax. A set of 'Views of Australia' stamps was issued on 20th June 2000 with the International POST signifier printed on the left side. Their price did not include GST. In September, Souvenir Stamp Sheets of $1 Koala stamps with tabs ordered from Philatelic Mail Order or the Personalised Stamps service suddenly appeared with an International POST signifier overprint! The signifier was on the right side of the stamp and appeared to be printed at the same time as the tab. This variation was not formally announced by Australia Post and there was no official First Day of Issue. It has been reported that this was an "emergency printing" due to a shortage of International stamps, but the overprinted $1 stamps were never available over the counter at Post Offices. The earliest record of this was a stamp postmarked on 8th September 2000. (Figure 1) 8 Different $1 Koala Stamp Types ¡ Because of the tab variations and the overprint, there were 8 different types of the $1 Koala stamp. Some are extremely scarce. There were no small koala

symbols in the border to signify the reprints. All types have the' 1999' datecode in the image. Type 1 was released in both normal selvedge and SSS formats. Types 2- 8 were only released in SSS format and hence not available from Post Offices. '{ype 1:

David Mallen is not known but in April2001 a $1 Kangaroo ("Leaps & Bounds") stamp was issued with the International POST signifier printed the left side of the stamp. This was also available with tabs in Souvenir Stamp Sheet format from Philatelic Mail Order and the Personalised Stamps service. It is interesting to note that the Special Event Sheets mentioned above were released after the $1 Kangaroo stamp was issued. Thanks to members of www.stampboards. corn, Justin Rees, Craig Chappell (07 3262 8810 craigchappell@bigpond.com.au) and Graham Howard (www.smilers-info.com) for

supplying some of this information and stamp and sheet images. Also refer to Craig's article in May 2007 Stamp News. If you have any further information about this fascinating stamp, please let me know. Remember not to remove the tab. You could be changing the value from $50 to 50c!

Glossary & Abbreviations Glossary: Personalised Stamp (P-stamp)

A stamp with a tab that has a customer’s photo or image printed on the stamp or on an attached tab. They are commonly known as “P-stamps”. (To be classed as P-stamps, the general public must be able to have their photo or image on the stamp or tab.) On gummed P-stamps, the tab is normally separated by a perforation. Self-adhesive Pstamps have an integrated tab that is part of the stamp. Self-adhesive Personalised Stamps are currently supplied by Australia Post’s Personalised Stamps service in sheets of 20 semi-imperforate stamps with integrated tabs. The righthand edge of the tab is imperforate. Sometimes the righthand side of the stamp image has a printed simulated perforation. Personalised Stamps are also supplied in Souvenir Stamp Sheets, Special Event Sheets and Snapshot! Booklets. The sheets normally contain gummed stamps. The Snapshot! Booklets contain self-adhesive and/or gummed P-stamps and can include additional stamps.

Special Occasion Prestige Booklet

A prestige booklet issued to commemorate a special occasion, subject or event. It usually contains stamps related to the occasion, subject or event. Occasionally the stamps may have tabs attached. If it contains P-stamps it is called a Snapshot! Booklet.

Souvenir Stamp Sheet (SSS)

A sheetlet of gummed stamps issued as a souvenir of a particular subject, theme or event. They usually contain previously released “generic base stock” stamps and occasionally stamps related to the subject of the sheet. The stamps usually have tabs attached containing text or images related to the subject or a ‘generic’ photo. They may also contain P-stamps with a customer’s photo or image on the tabs. If the sheet has been designed and ordered by a private organisation and issued for a special event with a special border and specific tab images or photos, the stamps are not P-stamps. Sometimes SSSs are issued at the same time or close to the issue date of the stamps they contain and hence form part of that issue.

Special Event Sheet (SES)

A Souvenir Stamp Sheet issued at an event. They often contain P-stamps with a customer’s photo taken at the event using the Mobile P-stamp Facility.

Stamplet

A small sheetlet, usually containing only one stamp.

Tab

An extra piece attached to a stamp containing text and/or graphics. The tab is usually rectangular but on some stamps it is square-shaped. Tabs may be joined to the stamp with or without perforations. If the tab is joined without perforations it is known as an integrated tab. If an integrated tab is removed, it creates a semi-imperforate ‘collectable’ stamp. (‘Collectable’ stamps are not valid for postage.) A stamp with a tab that has a customer’s photo or image printed on the tab, is known as a Personalised Stamp or P-stamp. If the tab contains a photo it is often referred to as a “photo tab”. (In Australia, the tab must not be blank and must not contain the same image as the stamp.) Occasionally Australia Post issues tabs with a ‘generic’ photo (usually an Australia Post employee). These are not P-stamps. They are usually issued in Special Event Sheets or Snapshot! Booklets.
