Arizona State University Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts

It is a pleasure to introduce you to the Arizona State University School of Music’s 2019-20 season. The ASU School of Music is one of the nation’s finest and most comprehensive programs for advanced study in music. Each year, we present over 600 diverse concerts filled with exciting music, innovative programming, adventurous new creations and world premieres. Our allencompassing performance season highlights the immense talent of our student artists, world renowned faculty and groundbreaking guest artists as they bring life to a vast repertoire of music. Our performances take place on our stages on the ASU Tempe campus, with special engagements at the ASU Kerr Cultural Center, the Musical Instrument Museum, the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, the Tempe Center for the Arts and more. 5th Symphony, a special evening of music, film and spoken word featuring work from award winning diverse composers in Towards a More Perfect Union, Beethoven’s 250th birthday celebration with the Pastoral Symphony, Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 and Mahler’s epic Symphony No. 2. ASU Wind Bands’ season highlights the Golden Age of Bands with “Sousapalozza!,” Community Connections with ASU’s Wind Symphony and Tempe Winds, Michael Martin’s epic Lontano, concerto competition winners and Pop Fiction inspired by Seinfeld, American Pie and Saturday Night Live. The ASU Music Theatre and Opera’s program showcases the Tony Award winning musical, The Light in the Piazza, Puccini’s Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi, the American opera Street Scene and 9 to 5: the Musical. Our choral program performances include works by Brahms, Liszt, Mozart’s Kings Coronation Mass and Mahler’s Symphony No. 2. Faculty and students are featured in two national conferences: the North American Saxophone Alliance Biennial National Conference and the 2019 American Liszt Society’s Festival. Our nationally recognized jazz program presents explorations from our big bands, Latin jazz band and jazz combos featuring standards and new compositions. There are intimate solo and chamber music recitals from our students, faculty and special guests such as guitarist Raphael Feuillatre, organist Dexter Kennedy, the Brentano String Quartet and world music from Gamelan, steel pan, world percussion, rock band, mariachi and urban music and dance. We hope that you join us regularly for our live music concerts and that the music inspires, uplifts and restores you. The ASU School of Music is home to some of the best designed venues in the nation for musical performances. Our award-winning music building is surrounded by a tranquil plaza with a fountain, informal courtyards and gardens filled with palms, citrus trees and Southwestern plants. Three of the performance spaces include Katzin Concert Hall, Recital Hall and the Evelyn Smith Music Theatre and are designed for chamber music, solo performance and musical theatre respectively. The acoustics of a great cathedral are replicated in Organ Hall, which showcases the famous pipe organ designed by Paul Fritts. This beautifully crafted instrument features 1,900 pipes

and took 13,000 hours of individual labor to create. The hall also houses the Traeri Italian Baroque organ, which is on indefinite loan to ASU. The most impressive of all the venues is ASU Gammage, which was the last great hall designed by legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The circular, eight-story building, across from the School of Music, seats 3,000 and is one of the finest acoustical halls for the performing arts in the U.S. ASU Gammage is considered the “jewel in the crown” for performance in the Southwest and is ASU’s best-known landmark.

Your support matters‌ Consider transforming the life of an ASU music student. The ASU School of Music traces its roots back over 100 years to the late 1800s when ASU was the Territorial Normal School, and we’ve been passionately preparing professional young artists ever since. Today, over 750 students from around the world have chosen to study at ASU because of the tremendous nurturing opportunities, which mirror the professional world, that we are able to provide. Acceptance into the ASU School of Music is very selective and requires a tremendous amount of talent and dedication. The study of music is a costly endeavor, from high quality instruments and instrument maintenance to the expenditures for musical scores and supplies, summer music festivals and programs, master classes, and lessons with renowned artists. Most of our students in the ASU School of Music require financial assistance to make their continued study possible. Your support can directly benefit our talented young artists by enabling the School of Music to provide more scholarships, support additional student travel and performance opportunities, acquire critical instruments, bring in guest artists and enhance other crucial areas that make the ASU School of Music an exemplary place of learning.

To learn more about giving to the school, please contact our Office of Development: (480) 965-8985.
