What is a Pupil Learning Walk and what do we hope to achieve? The idea of a Pupil Learning Walk is for you to act as a researcher for your own school. You will be visiting other schools in your area and observing the school environment, the teaching and learning, the dinner hour, the rewards and sanctions, the structure of the school day and the school uniform. You will be looking for examples of best practice in your partner schools. As well as the questionnaire that you have designed, you might have a focus for your visit decided upon by your host school, as well as the general impressions you have gained of the school. A host pupil from the same year group will accompany you for the day and there will be a link teacher who will oversee your visit. In your booklet you will have space for your notes from each visit. In the following term you will attend a special meeting to discuss your findings and prepare a final report. In this report the schools will not be named but will be referred to alphabetically – you will be recommending improvements for your own school. We would like you to give a presentation of your findings to the staff and govenors of your school.

How to go about your Research You will receive a map of the school which will show you where the classrooms and play areas are situated. In your pairs you will be given a camera to take photos of the best practice experiences. This may be a good display board, the reception area, the dining area, a quiet area in the playground, good facilities in a classroom, the school environment, antibullying posters, newsletters etc. Be considerate and ask permission to take a photo, if you think it is appropriate. You will have a booklet in which to write your notes. Your host pupils will be your best source of information. Use the break time to view certain areas of the school in relation to your focus. You will be meeting members of the school council during the day â&#x20AC;&#x201C; they will be able to help you with your questions. Make sure you are very polite; try your best to fit in to the lessons and thank your host, pupils and teachers.

Your expectations of a Pupil Learning Walk Write a few lines about what you expect the visits are going to be like and what you think you will learn from the experience. When you write your final report you will be able to look back at your expectations and see if they have been met.

Final Report Write a final report stating what you have found out about the different schools from your Pupil Learning Walk visit.

How to write your report Take each of your questions and compare the answers from each school. Write about the best practice found in the two schools to do with that question. Do this for all of your questions. When this is complete, write a final summary of your overall findings to do with your particular focus. You may wish to highlight particular good practice in the schools. Now see if you can make three recommendations that you would like to see implemented in your school. Finally, write a little bit about your experiences from your visits. Look back at the beginning of your booklet at your expectations. Did the visits fulfil your expectations? What was the best part of your visits and has it changed your outlook in any way?
