ASTRA’S 2012 Inaugural Trade Mission San Jose Conference

Welcome to Astra Women’s Business Alliance Inaugural Trade Mission with WEConnect-Canada. Thank you for participating in this conference designed to bring women business owners together to explore trade opportunities between the U.S. and Canada. We are grateful for the leadership and vision of Mary Anderson, President of WEConnectCanada and Tracy Scarlett and Marcela Mandeville, Alberta Women’s Entrepreneurs who worked diligently to bring together the support of their women business leaders and the Canadian government for this inaugural event. We have opportunities today to increase economic development and job creation in both the U.S. and Canada through continued support of women-owned businesses, who serve as the engine of growth for our world. Astra began its international focus in 2009 with a joint virtual trade mission with WEConnect-Europe because of a need to bring women business owners together as customers and as potential strategic partners for capacity-building, This two-day event is a continuation of the Astra commitment to our WBEs to pursue educational opportunities supporting global expansion for their companies.

Suzanne Lackman Vice President/CFO

Keynote Luncheon Presentation

Jacalyn Piatt Spedding, Senior Advisor, Franklin Fellow, Global Women’s Business Initiative Office of Commercial and Business Affairs, Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs, U.S. Department of State Introduction by: Arlene Inch, Chair, TransPak, Inc., Astra Board Member

Arlene Inch

Jackie Spedding

Jackie Spedding Joining the U.S. State Department in September 2011, Jacalyn Piatt Spedding, a Franklin Fellow, currently serves as Senior Advisor, Global Women’s Business Initiative (GWBI) within the framework of Global Entrepreneurship in the Bureau of Economic & Business Affairs. While working with established programs, African Women’s Entrepreneurship Program (AWEP), APEC Women’s Leadership Network and Pathways Access Initiative (PAI), she is also involved in expanding the GWBI to other geographies to promote the success of potential high growth, high impact women-owned businesses. Fostering prosperity around the world contributes to America’s interests by providing opportunities for American companies. And a key strategy for promoting prosperity is gender equity. In April 2008, Jackie joined the Arkansas retail giant, Walmart Stores, Inc., where she led Global Women’s Supply Chain Inclusion in Global Integrated Sourcing. She was instrumental in developing the vision, strategy and supply chain mapping for the recently announced Walmart Clinton Global Initiative: E-Commerce Empowerment Solution for Women. During this five year commitment, women from nearly two dozen countries will be impacted. A joint recipient of the WEConnect Vision Award, 2009, Jackie leveraged relationships with NGOs, multi-laterals, government agencies and academia to build strategic alliances. Focusing on best practices and de-mystifying the supply chain for women in the global environment, she has spoken at the International Development Bank’s IFI Procurement Forum, the Women’s Business Enterprise National Conference, and the Global Strategic Forum on Supplier Diversity and Women’s Economic Empowerment hosted by the World Bank Group. She served on the founding board of WEConnect International, a global non-profit engaged with women’s business enterprises, and cochaired the Global Committee, Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC).
