ISSUE #11

welcome...

Issue 11 not only showcases beautiful brides, but some incredible landscapes. From the dramatic desert looks of Tongariro National Park to the shores of the Coromandel, Issue 11 provides some fantastic inspiration for brides looking to use nature and our gorgeous country as a backdrop. Combined with a variety of themes and styling ideas and some incredible creative touches, this issue is one of my faves.

the finer details that are often left to the last minute. Don’t let these details stress you out at all. We ask our featured brides to provide advice to brides-to-be while the experience is still front of mind and more often than not the comment is ‘don’t sweat the small stuff.’ If you are starting to worry about the finer details ask your consultant for some tips. Above all else remember this day is all about you and that special person that you are marrying.

With summer on its way, we are heading into wedding season. This means lots of brides in store collecting gowns for their special day and lots of incredible stories from those who have had their dream day. This issue is packed with finishing touch ideas to inspire you with

We hope you enjoy this issue of Borrowed and Blue. Bring on Summer!

Jodie and Ben wanted to use geometric shapes where they could but also include elegance through gold and soft tones. They also added lots of green to bring in the natural environment.

Jodie and Ben got married at Centennial Park overlooking Back Beach in New Plymouth as this was one of Jodie’s favourite spots to spend time when she was growing up. The reception was at Bungalow Coastal Retreat, chosen because it was rural and on the coast. Jodie grew up on a farm locally and always spent a lot of time at the beach. Jodie said it was the perfect location - a huge lawn to enjoy the sunset, have their cocktail style wedding with bowl food, lawn games, picnic tables and rugs for guests to enjoy, all on the picturesque Taranaki coastline.

FAVOURITE WEDDING DAY MOMENT The ceremony, and saying everything I wanted to say to the man I was marrying. I thought I would hate all those people watching us and the formality of it all, but it was my favourite part in the end because it was in the perfect location and it really felt like it was just Ben and I getting to share an incredibly special moment.

I put it on and just felt so comfortable. I loved that I wouldn’t need to be worried about it hugging my figure, which also made it easy to move around in and the skirt was still light enough that I didn’t feel weighed down. The detail of the gold lace was something I really loved about it.

The team was so very helpful and they had a great selection. I had my initial fitting in Auckland, but my dress was sent to Wellington for the final fitting as I live in Timaru. Groomsman Nick King made all of the geometric gold shapes for us that we hung from the ceiling and also made the pots for the succulents. Bridesmaid Paula Ward helped with back drops, faux flowers and supporting me with any planning. Janet Quay (a family freind), put together the most incredible Grazing Table for us making it look better than I could have imagined. All of the dips were homemade and most of the crackers were homemade as well. My mum and her sisters put together the dessert table and made the majority of the desserts on it. My dad built the outdoor bar for us and put his own touches on it. Suzy Freeman did all of the big flower arrangements for us that were designed to bring a little bit of the outside into the venue. Taranaki Theatre Lamp and Lighting did an incredible job of our lights and were great to work with.

Helena and Alex tied the knot on the 22 April 2017 in Helena’s home town of Wellington. Wellington also provided a fabulous destination for both the bride and groom’s large extended families and friends. This gorgeous couple chose an elegant and traditional wedding theme, with an emphasis on music and dancing. They had a formal Catholic marriage ceremony in the stunning Sacred Heart Cathedral in Thorndon, followed by a night at the museum for their reception.

Maria Munkowits, Alex’s sister, choreographed our first dance to a 4 minute mashup of The Way You Make Me Feel by Michael Jackson, Crazy in Love by Beyoncé and Jay-Z, Forever by Chris Brown, Down by Jay Sean and We Found Love by Rihanna. Ascension Wine Estate in Matakana is one of our favourite locations and was the venue for Krista and Christopher’s Summer wedding. Both grew up in Matakana/Warkworth and it was important for them to get married in this location. The couple chose a rustic theme as they both love the outdoors and the simplicity yet elegance of this theme. One of Krista’s favourite things was the pine cones that they had as name holders.

We both fell in love with Ascension because it’s stunning and has a beautiful outdoor arbour which went with our rustic theme. They also offered the best backup option if it was wet and had a great area for guests to socialise in between the ceremony and reception making it a perfect all in one venue. My dream was always to arrive in a horse and carriage and Ascension was perfect for that.Â

Sam and Stacey live in Stacey’s parent’s rental just out of Thames, which is where they got married. However, what makes this story so romantic is that it is the same place Stacey’s parents also got married 28 years ago. They got married under a cherry tree that was gifted to Stacey’s parents for their wedding. Stacey also said that their mums did coffee club together, so this super sweet couple played here as babies too. The reception was a cross a few paddocks in a rusty old shed, that as Stacey said “was barely staying up!”

W H AT M A D E YO U R A ST R A B R I DA L EXPERIENCE SPECIAL?

I think my dress possibly has the most air miles out of any! I had flown back to Auckland (from London where I currently live) to spend some time with family and had organised for my Mum, Grandma and four bridesmaids to meet in Auckland for dress shopping. I had seen a dress online at another store but we arrived in the city much earlier than expected and found Astra Bridal just down the road from where we were having our morning coffee. After trying on multiple dresses, I narrowed my selection down to one. Long story short, I tried the other dresses on but when I went back to Astra Bridal in the afternoon to try the Rebecca Ingram Hope on one more time, it was easy – this was the one. I was so excited until Christie gave me the bad news that my size had sold out that day and the designer wasn’t making any more until after we were getting married! Christie and the team at Astra Bridal did everything they could trying to find a solution from tailors to alter the sample dress, to calling up stores across the world to see if they had my dress in stock. Luckily for me this story has a happy ending! My dress was flown from the UK to NZ and my Mum and Grandma carefully carried it back over to the UK (via their holiday in Canada) in their hand luggage!! Cannot thank you enough Christie and Astra Bridal!!

Jaimie chose the Rebeeca Ingram Hope, a Single tier 90 crochet edge veil and a gorgeous set of tear drop earrings to create her picture perfect look. Romantic and vintage-inspired, the Hope is an all over-lace fit-and-flare gown and features an illusion plunging neckline and scalloped edging. Add a gorgeous garter from the Astra Bridal collection to match the styling of Jaimie’s special day.

Jenna James of Jenna James Photography created this beautiful woodlands meets rustic shoot at Anglers Lodge in the Coromandel. Putting together a fantastic team of vendors made this shoot come alive. The opulent bouquets and floral decorations were outstanding and worked perfectly with the overall look and feel of the styled shoot.

We chose the Maggie Sottero Meryl as it is such a classic and elegant gown. The Meryl is a vintage-inspired ballgown featuring lace appliquĂŠs over whimsical layers of dotted tulle and Chic organza. Swarovski crystals and beading add shimmer and ethereal texture. The Meryl is just stunning!

You may have heard a bit of noise about a little place called The Bridal Outlet. At Astra Bridal we recognise that not everyone has the budget for a current season designer gown. But it doesn’t mean you can’t have a designer gown! We created a chain of stores called The Bridal Outlet and in these stores you can find designer samples (ex Astra Bridal) as well as designer end of lines (brand new) as well as production samples (Georgia Sanderson) as well as lots of other gems of gowns.

We source the gowns and then apply a discount to them. The discount reflects the brand, age and condition of the gown. Nearly a third of our gowns are brand new sourced primarily for these stores. 25% of them are under $1,000. We also clear veils, shoes and jewellery from these stores. We have a wonderful team of friendly, knowledgeable staff who are just champing at the bit to find you a dream designer gown. Our size range is from size 2 to 32 and we have over 400 gowns spread across our three stores. Many are on our website (but not all), so drop in to your nearest outlet and grab yourself a designer gown at an outlet price.
