About Underwriters Laboratories Inc. E stablished in 1894, Underwriters Laboratories Inc. G (UL) is an independent, non-profit organization that specializes in safety testing and certification. A leader in its field, UL has developed over 800 Standards for Safety with the help of a variety of industry, government, and consumer groups. Products that bear the UL Mark have successfully completed a rigorous application and evaluation process to ensure they meet or exceed the applicable UL Standards for Safety. UL-certified library furnishings, for example, must meet electrical and fire-resistance standards set forth in UL category QAWZ, “Office Furnishings” (see sidebar).
Handcrafted by Palmieri, Certified by UL A wide variety of Palmieri library furnishings have G successfully undergone UL safety testing and certification. We apply the UL Mark with pride to a growing selection of reading tables, computer terminals, study carrels and circulation desks, as well as all of the electrical components we offer. In addition, our standard leg plate assemblies and work surfaces have been UL tested and certified for stability, weight distribution, and durability. Unlike many of our competitors, Palmieri UL-tests its products both with and without optional electrical components. The materials that have been UL-tested against Surface Burning Characteristics of
Building Materials include wood species (oak, cherry, and maple), laminates (Pionite, Nevemar, Wilsonart, and Forminca), and cores (particleboard, lumber core, veneer core, and medium-density fiberboard).

UL STANDARDS FOR OFFICE FURNISHINGS Safety standards for library furnishings fall under UL category QAWZ, “Office Furnishings.” The following is a selection of category guidelines as presented on the Underwriters Laboratories Inc. website, www.ul.com: The office furnishings covered by this listing are portable and consist of panels, study carrels, work stations and pedestal-style systems that may be mechanically interconnected to form an office furnishing system to be installed in accordance with Article 605 of the National Electrical Code. These may be provided with an electrical distribution system, including switches, and receptacles. They may contain channels for routing communication cables within the system components separate from power circuit raceways. The systems may include filing cabinets, desks, work surfaces, shelves, storage units and the like that have a particular electrical or mechanical function unique to an office furnishing system. The surface burning characteristics of building materials employed in these assemblies is judged to be no greater than that of ordinary lumber used in on site construction. Finish surfaces are of materials having a flame spread rating of 200 or less and, unless otherwise marked, a smoke developed rating of 450 or less.
