A word from the Chair of the LBF Steering Group

I

am really pleased to have been given the opportunity to take on the role of Chair of the Steering Group this year.

It’s hard to believe that the LBF is actually celebrating its fifth anniversary – this is a phenomenal accomplishment and testament to its growing success over the years – and as the driving force behind it, the Steering Group are keen to ensure it continues to evolve. I feel that this year, the Festival is reaching a whole new level with its unique positioning as the region’s economic showcase, coupled with some mind-blowing events! Each year the Festival is receiving more and more support from businesses – both new and old. Earlier this month, [October] we were also delighted to receive the fantastic news that De Montfort University has signed as Headline Sponsor for a further three years, thus securing the future of the Festival for the foreseeable short-term future. I would like to thank all those that are involved in whatever guise, in bringing the Festival to fruition In particular, our sponsors and partners are so very important, because as a Community Interest Company, the Festival is entirely reliant on their support.

The Steering Group - an excellent collection of dedicated and inspirational individuals who have been instrumental in doing exactly what it says on the tin, ‘steering’ the Festival in absolutely the right direction to ensure it is even more successful and continues on its upward momentum. You can see who these wonderful people are on the facing page. Associate Events – this outstanding agency has pulled out all the stops, once again delivering a professional and seamless fortnight that has been backed by months of very hard behind-the-scenes work. Our sector leads have also played a vital role in successfully nurturing their sectors and the events.

In addition, the many event organisers, who collectively make the Festival by business for business. With over 100 events again, 2019 really does promise to be a spectacular fifth birthday year.

Scott Charlish Head of Financial Planning for Brewin Dolphin (East Midlands)

I am completely overwhelmed by the quality of the programme which has an appeal across the board. But some of the outstanding events (highlighted on pages 6 - 8) are sure to put Leicester and Leicestershire in the spotlight in terms of business, innovation and culture. Finally, I would like to wish everyone a very successful Business Festival and I once again look forward to seeing many of you around at the events as the business community comes alive for the 2019 Leicester Business Festival.

Message from the Chair of the Leicester Business Festival Community Interest Company

A

s Chair and Director of the LBF Community Interest Company, it always gives me great pleasure to be involved in a successful venture that truly benefits the businesses it serves - none more so than the Leicester Business Festival. To see this exceptional Festival rise from inception to the region’s leading business event - the first two-week business festival ever to be run in the UK - makes me immensely proud. Thousands of businesses have benefited from LBF events over the years and the 2 | #LBF2019

invaluable continued support of Headline Partner De Montfort University’s Leicester Castle Business School ensures the Festival is here to stay for the foreseeable future. On behalf of the CIC, I would like to express my gratitude to DMU and all the superb sponsors and partners that contribute to the Festival’s make-up. Finally, I hope businesses from across Leicester and Leicestershire, as well as the increasing numbers coming from beyond our borders, make the most of this actionpacked, comprehensive itinerary.

LEICESTER ENTREPRENEUR LAUNCHES THE R EG IO N’ S LARGES T BUS INES S E V E NT REVOLUTIONARY ‘BUSINESS GROWTH’ APP YEARS

came when I was looking for a dog groomer. I knew I wasn’t necessarily going to get the best results in my search, so I decided to create something that would give me what I needed.

“It’s easy, flexible and cost effective. It will suit any small business - and I’m determined to keep it that way!”

But isn’t Facebook free? Yes, it is to post in individual groups, but obviously not to advertise on. And if you are posting in groups, you’re only reaching people when they look, not necessarily when they need your services. I had a conversation with a local small business and it really spurred me on to create this app. I was chatting to a lady who runs an ironing business and she was struggling to reach new customers. She had a limited marketing budget and she didn’t have lots of time. So, I created the prototype of the app with her in mind as she’s a prime example of the people I want to help. Firstly, on the app you can link to every service you offer. If it’s ironing but also sewing and mending clothes, you can advertise them all. Then, I considered the budget of small businesses and I made the app just £1 per month – so £12 per year. Most importantly, I made the app very simple to use so it wouldn’t take up loads of time. I told myself if it’s easy, flexible and cost effective it will suit any small business - and I’m determined to keep it that way.

Local entrepreneur John Whitbread has developed a revolutionary new app that will change the way businesses reach their customers. It’s been deliberately designed to support businesses who are struggling with time and don’t have big marketing budgets, giving them an easier and more cost-effective way to connect with customers who need their services. But can it really be as good as it sounds? Let’s find out from Founder John Whitbread himself… What is the Spotted App all about? I wanted to create an app that makes it easier for businesses to get leads. It’s simple to use and provides a brand-new approach to lead generation. It connects any customer who is looking for any service with local businesses who can provide that service. It’s open, fair and gives everyone exactly what they’re looking for. What makes your app different? When I investigated similar websites or social media platforms, I found that algorithms were affecting the way that

people were being connected. Decisions were being made for the customer, so they weren’t getting all the options available. It started to bug me that we were constantly having decisions made for us. We just aren’t given all the facts for us to decide ourselves. I wanted to link businesses and customers with technology aiding the process rather than hindering it. With the Spotted app, businesses can upload their details, post reviews and pictures of past jobs on my app, and they can bid for any relevant enquiry. Then, consumers can make real decisions based on this. What is your background? I run a Spotted Facebook page and people often post about their services or ask for recommendations of a supplier, but as the owner of the group I see that things don’t always run fairly. I’m an engineer so I’m used to looking at the detail of how things work, and when I found out that technology was playing a huge part in making people’s decisions for them, I knew I had to do something. The lightbulb moment

Have you created an app before? No, my drive here has been through understanding the struggles that small businesses face. I get it. I’ve been there and I’m in the midst of it now. It’s hard to market yourself and reach customers, and it can cost a lot of money and take up a lot of time. I am working with a professional app developer and we’ve planned it properly. I really care about supporting local businesses. I want to help businesses grow through being able to reach customers in a more costeffective way. For me, that’s success. How can people access the app? If you’re a business and you want to get a listing then all you need to do is visit www. spottedapp.com and click on the “I want to list my business” button. It’s free for consumers to download and I believe it will become the biggest micro-app in the market. Sign up now to get 2 free months, making it just £10 for this year. I urge you to give it a try. I want to help you get more leads and I’ll do everything in my power to make that happen.

Transport & Logistics FEATURED EVENTS The Future of Human Mobility and Regional Connectivity Monday 4 November / 10:00 - 13:00 / MIRA Technology Institute This event brings together experts in transport and planning; strategists, operators and those directly involved in developing new technology and modes of transport, to discuss the future of human mobility.

Did you know... Two of the UK’s largest distribution hubs are based within Leicestershire

S ECTOR LE A D Chris Hayton, Head of External Affairs, East Midlands Airpoirt

We are one hour from London by rail and have immediate access to 22 million consumers.

95% of the UK population can be accessed within a four-hour drive

East Midlands Airport is the UK’s busiest pure cargo airport - over 320,000 tonnes of flown cargo every year

When you click ‘place order’ on Amazon or ASOS, I bet you don’t think about the role this huge sector plays in making sure your products get to your door. Leicester & Leicestershire’s distribution and logistics sector employs a staggering 42,800 people - from drivers and logistics planners to pilots, cargo handlers and packers, working for companies like DHL, UPS, FedEx, East Midlands Airport, Scania, CEVA logistics and Royal Mail, handling thousands of tonnes of cargo every single day. With numerous world-leading companies in our region and the rapid growth of e-commerce and logistics, there is great potential for the airport to work even more closely with local businesses to support our region’s continued growth. The Business Festival is a brilliant way to bring the importance of the distribution and logistics sector in commerce and everyday life into the spotlight.” Visit www.leicesterbusinessfestival.com/ transport-logistics for more

Retail, Tourism & Hospitality S EC TO R LE AD Kevin Routledge, Chairman, Leicester Riders

Sport is part of Leicester’s culture and heritage and is an integral part of our economy despite not always necessarily being thought of as such. The large number of micro businesses that operate here through to the internationally renowned sports clubs and associations, along with the extensive supply chain, make up a thriving sector that is predicted to see rapid growth. The Business Festival is a chance to draw attention to, and demonstrate the wealth of opportunity presented by the Sport & Health sector.

SEC TO R LE AD Sharon Redrobe, CEO, Twycross Zoo

Did you know...

Tourism and hospitality is an important economic sector for Leicester & Leicestershire and is recognised as having the potential to become one of the key drivers of the local economy. In 2018 the £1.88bn injected into the local economy by 34.93 million visitors supported 23,076 jobs. We will be using this year’s Leicester Business Festival to launch a new Tourism Growth Plan which will set down key priorities, activities and projects that we feel offer the best prospects to increase the competitiveness of the destination and maximise the wealth the sector can generate over the next 5 years. The recent announcement of a national Tourism Sector Deal has also increased opportunities for the sector locally and we are keen to explore how industry working in partnership with government can boost productivity through initiatives such as Tourism Zones. Here at Twycross Zoo it has been a record breaking year for visitors, we are planning to build on this success by announcing further exciting developments in the autumn. Many of our other local attractions have big growth ambitions too and these will also be shared at the business festival.
