PRIVATE INSTITUTION OF SOCIAL SOLIDARITY AND NON-GOVERNMENTAL DEVELOPMENT ORGANISATION (NGDO), IT WAS ESTABLISHED IN JUNE 1992, CARRYING ON THE WORK STARTED BY A SMALL GROUP OF VOLUNTEERS WHO, SINCE DECEMBER 1991, HAD PROVIDED PSYCHOLOGICAL, SOCIAL AND MATERIAL SUPPORT TO HIV+ INDIVIDUALS ADMITTED TO THE INFECTIOUS AND PARASITE-BASED DISEASES UNIT AT EGAS MONIZ HOSPITAL .

• IMPROVEMENT TO THE QUALITY OF LIFE AND WELFARE OF PEOPLE INFECTED WITH AND AFFECTED BY HIV/AIDS. PROMOTION AND ADVOCACY FOR THE RIGHTS OF INFECTED PEOPLE. • TRAINING AND EDUCATION ON HOW TO PREVENT INFECTION. • COOPERATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF ACTIVITIES AND PARTNERSHIPS WITH OTHER NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATIONS.

ABRAÇO AGENCY NATIONAL. CREATED IN 2010, ITS MAIN GOAL IS TO GIVE INPUT THROUGH HIV/AIDS INFORMATION PRODUCTION AND DISSEMINATION. WE HIGHLIGHT THE ABRAÇO MAGAZINE AND ITS FIRST ISSUE WAS PUBLISHED IN MAY 2011. QUARTERLY PUBLICATION, DISTRIBUTED AS A PÚBLICO NEWSPAPER INSERT. THE AGENCY IS COMPOSED BY THE FOLLOWING SERVICES: NEWS, TRANSLATIONS, CAMPAIGNS, POSTERS, INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION, GALLERY, MARKETING, ORGANIZATION OF EVENTS, MAGAZINE AND OTHER PUBLICATIONS, ABRAÇO AND GALLERY WEBSITES, SOCIAL NETWORKS MANAGEMENT AND VIDEOS.


ABRAÇO AGENCY


TEMPORARY SHELTER FLATS LISBON. TWO FLATS, WITH A CAPACITY TO ACCOMMODATE 6 INDEPENDENT PEOPLE EXPERIENCING SOCIAL EXCLUSION OR FINANCIAL HARDSHIP. HOUSING PROVIDED FOR A SIX-MONTH PERIOD. 24/7 HEALTHCARE EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR.


PSYCHOSOCIAL SUPPORT and MONITORING CENTRE NATIONAL. ONGOING FOLLOW-UP FOR AN AVERAGE OF 90 HOUSEHOLDS (LISBON) AND 70 HOUSEHOLDS (PORTO), BOTH AT SOCIAL AND PSCYCHOLOGICAL LEVEL, WITH DIVERSIFIED SOCIAL DEPRIVATION AND ECONOMIC NEEDS, REFERRED TO US BY COMMUNITY-BASED INSTITUTIONS/SERVICES AND/OR ON THEIR OWN INITIATIVE.


DENTAL CARE SURGERY LISBON. THIS SERVICE WAS STARTED OFF IN 2005, FOCUSSING ON COMPREHENSIVE AND OF HIGH QUALITY ORAL REHABILITATION FOR ABRAÇO SERVICE USERS. THE DIFFERENT CLINICAL FACILITIES ON OFFER ARE COVERED BY A MEDICAL TEAM OF ABOUT 40 DENTIST ON A VOLUNTEER BASIS. THE TANGIBLE GOALS TO BE ACHIEVED YEARLY IS SET AT 1820 CONSULTATIONS. THE EXPECTED IMPACT IS TO DRASTICALLY REDUCE THE ACCESSORY DEPRIVATION CAUSED BY THE INFECTION, FAVOURING THE QUALITY OF LIFE AND SOCIAL REINTEGRATION OF PATIENTS, AS WELL AS THE GENERATION OF RELEVANT KNOWLEDGE TO THE HIV/AIDS AREA AND ITS CONNECTION WITH ORAL HEALTH.


CENTRO DE INVESTIGAÇÃO NATIONAL. ABRAÇO SCIENTIFIC SIDE, SET UP IN 2010, WITH THE FOLLOWING STUDIES UNDERWAY: • THE INFLUENCE OF ANTI-RETROVIRAL THERAPY ON THE CONGNITIVE FUNCTIONS, FUNDED BY THE PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCES; • CHILDREN OF TODAY: PROFILING OF CHILDREN POPULATION INFECTED WITH HIV/AIDS, LIVING IN MAINLAND PORTUGAL – FUNDED BY ACS|CNIVIH (NATIONAL AUTHORITY FOR HIV/AIDS); • VALIDATION AT A GLOBAL LEVEL FOR DEMENTIA EARLY DETECTION ASSOCIATED WITH HIV (IHDS), IN COLLABORATION WITH JOHN HOPKINS UNIVERSITY AND THE FACULTY OF PSYCHOLOGY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF COIMBRA; • CLYNICAL RESEARCH IN THE DENTAL MEDICINE AREA ON PEOPLE LIVING WITH HIV/AIDS; • STRESS AND COPING STRATEGIES FOR CARE PROVIDERS WORKING WITH HIV+ INDIVIDUALS; • THE ROLE OF INFORMATION IN THE HIV/AIDS CONTEXT.


CHILDREN OF TODAY NATIONAL. STUDY CARRIED OUT IN PARTNERSHIP WITH TESE – ASSOCIATION FOR DEVELOPMENT, WHICH WILL ALLOW TO FIGURE OUT WHO THE HIV POSITIVE CHILDREN ARE AND HOW THEY LIVE, SO THAT ADJUSTED AND DIGNIFYING SOCIAL AND HEALTH POLICIES MAY BE A REALITY. THIS STUDY IS MONITORED BY A SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE , COMPOSED BY PROFESSIONALS WITHIN NATIONAL SUPERIOR EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTES, BEING SCIENTIFICALLY COORDINATED BY THE TROPICAL HYGIENE AND MEDICINE INSTITUTE.


TRAINING NATIONAL. SINCE FEBRUARY 2011, ABRAÇO HAS BEEN FORMALLY RECOGNISED AS A TRAINING PROVIDER BY DGERT (DIRECTORATE GENERAL FOR EMPLOYMENT AND LABOUR RELATIONS) AND IEFP (PORTUGUESE JOB CENTRE). ABRAÇO PROVIDES INTERNAL TRAINING COURSES TO SERVICE USERS, COLLABORATORS, AND EXTERNALLY TO ENTERPRISES, OTHER PROFESSIONALS AND GENERAL PUBLIC, IN MOST DIVERSIFIED AREAS.


ON-THE-MOVE HEALTH PROJECT PORTO. PROMOTION OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND HEALTHY EATING FOR PEOPLE LIVING WITH HIV/AIDS SUFFERING FROM DYSLIPIDAEMIA AND/OR LIPODYSTROPHY. THE ANTIRETROVIRAL THERAPY (ART), WITH PROTEASE INHIBITORS, CAUSE REMARKABLE IMPROVEMENT ON AVERAGE LIFE EXPECTANCY OF HIV/AIDS PATIENTS. HOWEVER, LENGTHY TREATMENT WILL CAUSE THE PATIENTS’ PHYSIONOMY TO CHANGE AS THEY DEVELOP AN ABNORMAL DISTRIBUTION OF BODY FAT (LIPODYSTROPHY), TO WHICH IS ALSO A SYNDROME OF RESISTENCE TO INSULINE (WHICH MAY LIKELY TURN INTO DIABETES) CHOLESTEROL AND TRIGLYCERIDES INCREASE. THIS PROJECT WILL COME TO AN END ON DECEMBER 2012 DUE TO LACK OF FUNDING.


JOB SEARCH OFFICE

NATIONAL. PROJECT OF SUPPORT TOWARDS PROFESSIONAL INTEGRATION AND GAINING QUALIFICATIONS BY THE HOUSEHOLD IN A FOLLOW-UP PROCESS, EXPERIENCING UNEMPLOYMENT OR PRECARIOUS EMPLOYMENT. THE AIM IS TO BUILD SOCIAL SKILLS, THROUGH WORKSHOPS AND INDIVIDUAL WORK, IN ORDER TO OPTIMISE OPPORTUNITIES OF INCLUSION IN THE WORK MARKET. IT’S BASED ON THE TECHNICAL SUPPORT AND AVAILABILITY OF ALL THE NECESSARY TOOLS FOR AN ACTIVE JOB SEARCH.


STEP-BY-STEP PROJECT

VILA NOVA DE GAIA. FUNDED BY THE PORTUGUESE INSTITUTE FOR DRUGS AND ADDICTION (IDT), IT IS INTENDED TO HELP DRUG USERS BECOME INDEPENDENT, EITHER UNDERGOING TREATMENT OR ABSTINENT, THROUGH THE ABILITY TO BUILD JOINT LIFE PROJECTS, THAT IS TO SAY, LET THE ADDRESSED COGNITIVE AND BEHAVIOURAL CHANGES ALLOW THE INDIVIDUALS TO FREE THEMSELVES FROM THEIR SPECIFIC LIFE SITUATION AND CONSIDER AND LOOK AT POSSIBLE FUTURE SITUATIONS.


PREVENTION NATIONAL. IN SCHOOLS, ENTREPRISES, AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS (VIA WORKHOPS AND TRAINING), EVENTS, FESTIVALS, GIGS, ETC.


BEING A CHILD PROJECT FUNCHAL. SERVICE DESIGNED TO ADEQUATELY PROVIDE RESPONSES TO THE NEEDS EXPERIENCED BY THE CHILDREN COMING FROM FAMILIES AFFECTED BY AND INFECTED WITH HIV/AIDS. IN 2010, 65 CHILDREN/YOUNGSTERS HAVE RECEIVED IN OUR PREMISES: SCHOOL SUPPORT, PSYCHOSOCIAL SUPPORT, ESSENTIAL GOODS (FOOD, CLOTHING, SHOES, MEDICATION, SCHOOL PROPS, TRANSPORT,…), MEALS, SUPPORT WITH HOUSING RENT; EQUIPMENTS AND FURNITURE SUPPLIES.


REFECTORY LISBON. UP UNTIL 2007, 80 LUNCHES HAVE BEEN SERVED, FROM MONDAY TO FRIDAY. THE ABRAÇO REFECTORY IS CURRENTLY SHUT DOWN AS IN NEED OF REFURBISHMENT WORK.


HOMECARE SUPPORT SERVICES LISBON AND PORTO. RESPONSE TO 30 PEOPLE A MONTH (PORTO) AND TO 50 PEOPLE (LISBON), WHO ARE TEMPORARILY OR PERMANENTELY UNABLE TO CARRY OUT DAILY TASKS ON THEIR OWN OR WHO MAY FIND HARD TO ADHERE TO TREATMENT. THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED, DEPENDING ON THE CLIENTS’ INDIVIDUAL NEEDS, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THEIR SITUATION AT A BIO-PSYCHOSOCIAL LEVEL.


RESIDENTIAL UNIT PORTO. RESIDENTIAL UNIT FOR PEOPLE TOTALLY DEPENDING ON OTHERS, IN ORDER TO CARRY OUT THEIR DAILY ACTIVITIES, AND WHERE HOME CARE IS NOT FEASIBLE AT ALL. 24/7 HEALTHCARE EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR. OUT – OF-HOSPITAL CARE.
