ASPLUND I THE STORY Founded in 1990, by brothers Michael and Thomas Asplund, Gallery ASPLUND was exhibiting furniture as objects of fine art. In collaboration with up-and-coming designers and artists the gallery soon became a stage for contemporary art. These collaborations resulted in ASPLUND´s own production line of furniture and contemporary design pieces; ”ASPLUND Collection” led by Creative Director Sandra Adrian Asplund, who joined the company in 1995. The same year the gallery moved to larger premises from Nybrogatan 34 to Sibyllegatan 31, where it is still situated. New influences, materials and techniques were in focus, where natural elements combined with new surfaces were key inspiration. Combined with the knowledge that natural materials feels vivid and changes gracefully over time, ASPLUND had discovered the design concept that has become its signum in the world of design. The secret to longevity lies in simplicity. However, simplicity is all but simple – small details are even more important in minimalistic design. Unless every inch is perfect, it is not enough. To ensure a perfect result, while observing ethical and environmentally friendly production processes (as well as benefitting the Swedish furniture industry), the ASPLUND Furniture Collection is mainly produced in Sweden. The ASPLUND Carpet Collection is made in India, where old traditional techniques are used. It is a family-owned factory, which shares the same values as ASPLUND. Over the years, ASPLUND´s signature style has shown the world that Swedish minimalism can be warm and elegant. By using durable materials, which age with beauty, and through a lasting expression unaffected by trends, ASPLUND works to create design classics that can be passed on for generations.
Today ASPLUND is an Internationally acclaimed design establishment, which has contributed significantly to the idea of contemporary Swedish design. ASPLUND Collection, created in collaboration with renowned designers, can be found in homes, offices and public spaces globally. In total up till today ASPLUND is represented at 250 retailers world wide. The rest is both history and the present.

ASPLUND I ABOUT OUR CARPETS The ASPLUND Carpet Collection was born out of a dream to follow our concept and expand our existing collection into carpets. A mix of International and Swedish traditions and, in the same time, using old techniques combined with modern patterns and design for a contemporary style. When we strive to create carpets that are stylish and durable enough to be passed on for generations, only the finest materials and techniques are good enough. Our carpets are woven, knotted or tufted by hand, by skilled craftsmen. Handcrafting makes each rug unique, like a piece of art. We use superior quality New Zealand wool as primary material. The wool is rich in natural fats that give the carpets a beautiful luster while also providing good protection against stains. In some designs we add fine materials like silk or tencel, for a characteristic look and feel. The first carpets we made were unique pieces together with Swedish artists and designers. Followed by a higher demand we developed several new carpet icons like the Crux, the Convex and the O, just to mention a few. In the beginning of the Century we also made designs together with our friends and designers such as Marc Newson, Jasper Morrison, James Irvine and Tom Dixon. We are very proud of having such a wide range of carpet designs from acclaimed designers world wide. We have been producing our beautiful carpets working with the same family-owned factory in India for over 25 years. It is a factory that deeply cares for its employees and their families. Here the wool is spun into yarn, dyed and then tufted, knotted or woven by hand into beautiful carpets, using only the finest wool, silk and techniques. No electricity is used.

ASPLUND I UPDATED INFORMATION 2021 Information concerning delivery times: The carpets are sent from India in batches, not one by one. The woven carpets are also produced in looms when a woven order batch is ready to be made. Therefore the delivery times may vary, depending on whether your order is in the beginning or in the end of this batch. Because of the complex situation, due to Covid-19, the factory in India that produces our carpets has taken a lot of precautions for their employees. If someone does not feel well, the factory closes for two weeks and all work stops. That is one of the reasons for a lot of delays.
Please take note of our updated information for 2021: •

HAND KNOTTED RUGS
ASPLUND I HAND KNOTTED RUGS
The beauty and durability of a hand knotted rug is beyond compare. We offer 5 different qualities, knotted by hand: 1. INDO NEPAL – PLATINUM 8/40 (75% New Zeeland wool, 25% silk) – Our most exclusive hand knotted rugs. They are labled with a platinum coloured leather lable. These rugs have the most dense knotting, about 122 000 knots per m2 and are highly suitable for applying a design or pattern. Pile height approx: 23-25 mm. 2. TIBETAN – PLATINUM 7/18 (75% New Zeeland wool, 25% silk) – Our most exclusive hand knotted rugs. They are labled with a platinum coloured leather lable. Made with large knots and thick threads of yarn creating a more vivid style. The Tibetan rug is beautiful in one monocrome colour. The pile is high and is more roughly cut. Pile height approx: 25-27 mm. 3. TIBETHAN THIN - Made slightly thinner than the Tibetan and with a shorter pile. It is made from either 100% New Zealand wool with a cut out pattern or a pattern in a tencel/wool blend. The blend gives the carpet a beautiful lustre and shine. 4. SUMAK – An ancient knotted technique with a braided look and a raised pile pattern. 100% New Zeeland wool is used. 5. A-KNOT – Made with medium-sized knots (very much like the Tibetan Thin knot), in 100% Indian wool. Since our hand knotted rugs are made to order we are flexible with sizes. Calculate the square meter (m2) like this: Rectangular: width x length = m2 Round: radius x radius x 3,14 (pi) = m2

FLEUR - HAND KNOTTED PLATINUM INDO NEPAL By Broberg & RidderstrĂĽle 2014 This rug is a hand knotted Platinum Indo Nepal, one of our finest rugs. A hand knotted base in one colour (wool) meets a lot of different colours in shape of flower petals. The flowers are in a silk-mix and some of them have an elevated pile to enhance the feeling of real flowers. The Fleur rug was designed to give the classic flower pattern a modern take. Inspired by the floors of a flower shop, where a bunch of different flowers were thrown from a high ladder onto the floor, creating a realistic, one of a kind, beautiful pattern.

HAND KNOTTED PLATINUM TIBETAN Our hand knotted rugs labeled Platinum, with a mix of 75% New Zealand wool and 25% silk, are our top of the line rugs in the ASPLUND Carpet Collection. The Platinum Collection consists of 2 different knots; Indo Nepal & Tibetan. The Tibetan knot is quite large with a lot of wool and silk used. The pile of this rug is roughly cut. The large knots make the rug almost striped in pattern, but very elegantly, which makes it perfect when ordering a one colour (monochrome) carpet.

BIBLIOTEKET - HAND KNOTTED TIBETAN THIN By Emma Olbers 2018 The Tibetan Thin knotted rugs have the same type of knot as the Tibetan rugs, but they are slightly thinner with a shorter pile and more delicate cut. They are very well suited for design pattern and colour mix. Biblioteket is a finely hand knotted Tibethan Thin with a mix of 50% New Zealand wool and 50% tencel. Tencel is a natural fiber from fast growing forests and is 95% bio degradable. This rug was originally designed for the public library in the renovated and reopened Stockholm National Museum.

GEMS - HAND KNOTTED TIBETAN THIN By Damian Williamson 2016 The Tibetan Thin knotted rugs have the same type of knot as the Tibetan rug, but they are slightly thinner with a shorter pile and more delicate cut. Better suited for pattern and colour mix. The Gems in Tibetan Thin are available in different versions; either 100% wool (New Zealand and fine Indian wool mix) wool with a cut out pattern (Gems Relief) or with a pattern in a tencel-blend (Gems Multi and Gems Outlined). HAND TUFTED RUGS
ASPLUND I HAND TUFTED RUGS
Hand tufted rugs should not be mixed up with machine-made tufted rugs. Hand tufting is a traditional method, which requires a high level of craftsmanship. Our rugs are entirely made by hand: the yarn is hand dyed, tufted by hand with a small mechanical tool and finally sheared, using hand held scissors. No electricity is used. Our hand tufted rugs are available in different shapes and measures. We have a wide range of different designs and patterns and also a high availability for customers to order other sizes. We use 100% New Zealand wool and tencel as primary bases for our tufted rugs. This wool is rich in natural fats that give the rugs a beautiful lustre while also providing good protection against stains. Tencel is a natural fiber from fast growing forests and is 95% bio degradable. Our tufted rugs have either 100% of one material or a mix of the both, depending on the choosen design. Please see information on every rug separately. The pile height of our hand tufted rugs is approx: 2 cm and the weight is approx: 3,5 kg/m2. Unlike the 100% wool, the pile of the woolsilk rugs are lightly rough cut. Calculate the square meter (m2) like this: Rectangular: width x length = m2 Round: radius x radius x 3,14 (pi)= m2 PLEASE OBSERVE: Where it says “%”, the carpet has to be proportionally enlarged/diminished. Don’t forget to take the pattern repeat into consideration. Requested width x 1,5 = length (Taken from the standard size pattern 160x240, for square or round, the pattern will just be larger or smaller following the size of the carpet) For fixed sizes, specials can be made with new design made by ASPLUND Studio.

WEDGE - HAND TUFTED RUG By Marie-Louise Hellgren 2018 The Wedge rugs are made of either 100% tencel, 100% wool or woolsilk. They are available in two colours set schemes: Neutrals or Blues. Please note that tencel without the support of wool will lie down and apppear paler after sometime of usage. The colours dont fade even if it may have the illusion of such. A mix of 50% wool and 50% tencel will balance the pile and make it stay in shape. Geometric patterns have been a recurring item throughout Marie-Louise Hellgrens designs. Wedge is no exception, however, there is a subtle twist to the patterns. If you take a closer look you may find small spontaneous variations to the hand-sketched geometric designs. For Marie-Louise it is always important that her work includes subtle energy that, at a first glance may look symmetric, but then surprises you with something new every time you look.

Wedge Neutrals
Please note that we also have new versions of Wedge: Wedge 2, which you can find on page 24.
Standard size: 100% wool & 100% tencel 160 x 240 cm
PLEASE OBSERVE: For Wedge Neutrals the pattern can be enlarged in a repeat of approximately 16 and 8 cm. Wedge Blues has a fixed pattern. The width can be enlarged in a

8 cm repeat. For a length more than 240 cm, a new design has to be made by our Studio.

WEB - HAND TUFTED RUG By Marie Louise-Hellgren 2020 Web is inspired by cobweb, which is strong, fragile, beautiful and treacherous, all at the same time. The empty space in the center of the carpet is a reminder of centering into ones core, a symbol of the eye of the hurricane that creates a radiant sunray like image. Available in 100% wool with tencel pattern or in 50% wool and 50% tencel with tencel pattern.

AURORA - HAND TUFTED RUG By Gabriel Tan 2020 The inspiration of the Aurora rug was the designer Gabriel Tan´s fascination of the Northern lights. For him the aurora is like the holy grail, despite a few trips to the far north it always escaped him. The designer experimented with different colour variants of the aurora such as purple and bright green, but decided on a more classic and warmer palette more suited to the home. The Aurora rug is made of a wool and tencel blend and looks just as good on the floor as on the wall.

OBI - HAND TUFTED RUG By Färg & Blanche 2020 OBI is made of 100% New Zeeland Wool. The idea for OBI developed during a three months long residency in Japan during 2015. Färg & Blanche took inspiration from the Japanese Geisha Culture and all the knots and rope bindings they saw in their clothing. ”We wanted to give the carpet a three-dimensional effect, an organic shape on a flat surface”. OBI was first shown for ASPLUND during the exhibition AMOUR mon AMOUR in Milan 2017. These rugs look perfekt hung on the wall as well.

HAND WOVEN CARPETS
ASPLUND I HAND WOVEN CARPETS
Our hand woven carpets are made manually by skilled craftsmen on traditional flat looms in small villages along the Ganges River in India. The different looks are defined by the different wool qualities and patterns woven into or stitched onto them. The Kelim carpets, which are woven with a warp in wool, have a shiny and fat wool base. They are made with traditional techniques of Anatolian origin. The Dhurrie carpets are also made in a traditional nomadic way, but in contrast to the Kelim carpets they have a warp in cotton. The base of the Dhurries also feel a bit stiffer.

ASPLUND I HAND WOVEN CARPET WITH KNOTTED PILE
The technique of the C Carpet is extra time consuming and requires exceptionally skilled craftsmen. The base of this carpet is a hand woven Dhurrie in 100% New Zealand wool where a pattern / pile is knotted onto the base by hand. The wool used in this carpet is a natural wool and gives the weave a melange look. The edges have a contrasting colour for that special touch. The pattern in the C Carpet is very subtle, yet interesting. It is actually the Dhurrie weave (base) that forms the pattern, which makes this carpet unique.

COMPARING MATERIALS IN THE SAME COLOUR: These samples visualize a few colours (from our standard colours) for comparison between different materials for the same colour. The texture and colour can be very different. The woolsilk gives the pile extra lusture and is a bit rougher cut. This mix is available in all our standard colours except for White 01 and the ”Naturals” colours. Seen on tufted samples in 100% wool on the right side compared to woolsilk (50% wool & 50% tencel) on the left side.

CUSTOM MADE If you are on the lookout for something truly unique, our carpets can be custom made to suit your individual preference. We are happy to adjust the shapes, sizes, patterns and colours of our designs to complement your home, office or public space.
All yarn is dyed by hand
ASPLUND I CARPET CARE/MAINTENANCE In general, the life length of a carpet depends on how you take care of it. A high quality carpet lasts a long time if vacuumed (without the brush) and whipped regularly. It is always best to keep the original fat in the wool fibre (natural impregnation) as long as possible. A small amount of lint usually sheds off the first months. This is normal and just excess material. If a pile of yarn gets loose, cut it off with scissors, do not pull it out. New Zealand wool is very durable and dirt-repellent. Be extra careful if you have heated floors. Tufted rugs are not recommended for this environment due to its glued backside. Too high constant heat may react to the adhesive and it can start shredding or start to smell. For heated floors, please consider a knotted rug instead. Rotate the carpet in the room regularly so that it is worn evenly. Also, avoid placing it in direct sunlight when colours can fade.
CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS It is always best to take care of spills as quickly as possible. Try to avoid it being dried up and set in. The quicker you act, the easier the stain can be removed. Be careful not to spread the stain and work only on exposed areas. Use a spoon to gently remove eg food residues or things alike. Use uncoloured paper towels to absorb different liquids (both from the top and bottom of the carpet). NOTE! Don’t rub! If you get a stain, moist a cloth with water and liquid natural soap and gently pad it onto the stain. Rinse the cloth and do it again. Finish up with a dry cloth or paper towel. Dry the area with a hair-dryer (lowest), moving continuously over the stain, to avoid watermarking. Always put a dry towel or paper towel underneath the rug for floor protection. Repeat this process if the stain is not entirely removed or contact a professional carpet cleaner for further advice. Please observe: Always be extra careful when you have silk or tencel in your carpet. Do not wash these materials with water. There is a high risk for fiber damage and decolourisation. These materials must be dry cleaned at a professional carpet cleaner. Also, if you have vibrant colours in your carpet, it would be a good idea to test just a small part of the carpet first, to see if it causes any decolourisation. Do not handwash carpets with strongly contrasting colours yourself. HAND KNOTTED RUGS Hand knotted rugs should always be cleaned by a professional carpet cleaner. Our Platinum rug with silk included should be treated with extra care. Never use chemicals at home on your rug. HAND TUFTED RUGS Hand tufted rugs should always be cleaned by a professional carpet cleaner. Never rub a tufted carpet, this could damage the fibres or yarns and change the structure of the rug. Dry cleaning and other chemical treatments ruin the back of the rugs and bright colours can turn yellow. Never use chemicals at home on your rug. HAND WOVEN CARPETS Hand woven carpets are best suited being cleaned by a professional carpet cleaner for soft wash. Hand washing: Use lukewarm water with natural soap. Scrub gently with a soft brush and rinse well. Hang the carpet for the water to drain. The carpet can be a bit uneven and ”bubbly” at first but this will dissappear after a short period of time. Stretch the corners while moist. Never use chemicals at home on your carpet. Do not handwash carpets with strongly contrasting colours yourself. HAND WOVEN CARPETS WITH KNOTTED PILE Hand woven carpets with knotted pile should always be cleaned by a professional carpet cleaner. Shake the carpet from time to time to lift the pile. Never use chemicals at home on your carpet. Do not handwash carpets with strongly contrasting colours yourself. IMPORTANT! This info is our general carpet care advice. If possible, always consult a professional carpet cleaner before washing your carpet.
