THE CHALLENGE District 62 officials required a solution that would help improve their school system’s antiquated approach to hiring employees. Due to budget constraints and cutbacks over a decade ago, a district Human Resources department was virtually nonexistent prior to Superintendent Dr. Jane L. Beyer Westerhold’s arrival nine years ago. Because there was no specific hiring process in place, school administrators used to have to hire their staff on their own, said Paul Hertel, Associate Superintendent, District 62. “Previously, various people would just show up [in the administrative offices] and say, “I’m the new second grade teacher at this elementary school,’” said Hertel. “The principals just did the hiring on their own, and that was that.” This old system was inefficient for numerous reasons, he said, and did not always connect school administrators with the best, most-qualified candidates. “The old approach served as a major disadvantage to the administrators and the applicants, especially because it was quite time-consuming for our office staff and pretty paper-intensive,” he said.
THE SOLUTION Within Westerhold’s first year as superintendent, she recruited the help of a retired HR professional to help streamline the district’s hiring process.
