A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT!

H

ello there and welcome to 2020! Did you ever think this year would arrive?

Well it has, and it’s my distinct honor and pleasure to guide ASID CA OC into this 20th year of the 21st century, the first year of a new decade, and wow, hang on, there is a lot going on! Our chapter continues to bring to the forefront Designers, Builders, Realtors, and Publishers at our Monthly Mingles along with CEU’s that can educate, enlighten, and enhance all of our members business’s. Encouraging professionalism at every event is our goal. The 31st Design Expo in spring will be focused on “Women in the business of Design”, with two panel presentations. Breaking down the business side of Design we will have a CPA, Tax Attorney, and a Marketing Guru, followed later in the day by a group of Orange County women who started their Design Business from the ground up and became Nationally renowned not just for their design work but for their savvy business acumen as well. We’ll be offering our first “Designer Tours” to Europe this term as well, Salone del Mobile Milan in April and Maison & Objet Paris in September, stay tuned for more info soon, space will be limited! In the summer we have another wonderful Dine by Design experience planned at one of Orange Counties finest dining establishments with unparalleled design and insights on how it came to be. Our Real Life Student Design Challenges continue to stun with a new project for 2020, an LBGTQ Community Center in Santa Ana will host our creative up and coming designers for a full refresh! Our tremendous Industry Partner Members with all their sponsorships and support help maintain our level of professionalism at every turn, we plan to show our thanks with a special evening, just for them! Looking to September… When I say my Goodbyes to you all… we will present our highly sought after Design Awards and Gala Celebration with our own “Night at the Oscars”. 2020… A year you don’t want to miss, all for you, to be a better designer, a better professional, a better person… Because if it wasn’t for you, we at ASID OC wouldn't be here! I thank you for your support and it’s going to be a GREAT GREAT GREAT Year!! William Elson, Allied ASID President 2019-2020

Communications Update

C

ommunications for ASID and its members is an important aspect for our Organization and as Designers, Students and Industry Partners. My resolution for 2020 is improve communications within our Chapter by:

 Increasing the communications to ASID current and future Members through the Design Magazine and Social Media  Improve follow-up to the Board and Membership through transparent and timely messaging  Partner with Mingle Co-chairs to make sure an aspect of communications is captured at each Mingle (i.e. Accomplish Mingle Goal / Expectation then post on Social Media)  Improve the marketing of ASID events my timely communications of event dates and expected benefit of attendance As a member of ASIDOC, we as interior designers, students and Industry partners should commit to the following communications-related resolutions:  Improve on follow-up to our colleagues, customers and partners  Provide timely responses to those people who communicate with us.  Set downtime for calls and text messages  Periodically post business professional updates to Social Media sites  Communicate with professionalism at all times  Keep communications relevant and precise  Sometimes say "No" and make communications clear and concise (remember to take time for self)  Set clear communications expectations to others As the Owner of Angela Eason Enterprises (Lavish Images, Angela Eason Realty, and Best Gumbo In The Hood), communications play an important role when running several businesses and ventures. By practicing clear communications, I will be better at work/life balance. Being elected as ASIDOC Communications Board Member, I now have the opportunity to contribute to spreading the word that our organization and its members are outstanding resources and people to hire, consult with, and work with! Let's use style and finesse with all of our communications to represent ourselves as the professionals that we are! Angela Eason, Allied ASID Communications Director 2019-2021 7

The evening capped off with a sommelier led tasting of American Bourbon’s for all!

Finance Director

A

utumn is the season of change and with it brought my new position. This term, I am happy to serve as the chapter Finance Director. I will be that person who makes sure we stay on track and continue to maintain our reserves but also to grow it. Making the chapter better and stronger for the future. This year’s Titanium Sponsor is once again, Pacific Sales. We are grateful to continue our partnership and are looking forward to many great events in collaboration. New this year, will be our Silver Sponsor, California Closets. With the addition of their support the chapter can achieve even more. The Expo team is already working away on plans for the 2020 event. Early Bird packets for exhibitors are out now. Industry Partners will want to sign up right away to get a good spot for a great price. And the Gala, I understand, will be a “don’t miss” event. They’ll be looking for sponsors so pencil it into your plans to be a part of it. Listen for announcements at the Monthly Mingles or check the chapter website for upcoming dates for all these amazing events and more. We are grateful for your ongoing support and attendance.

So, here’s wishing members a wonderful holiday season and we are looking forward to bringing you lots of wonderful things in the New Year! Best Wishes! Julia Alt, Allied ASID Finance Director 2019-2021 9

Membership Director

I

t’s hard to imagine that I set up Raad Ghantous & Associates (RG&A) back in 2003! After having gained extensive experience working for design industry giants Hirsch Bedner & Associates (HBA), and local based, international architectural icon Wimberly, Allison, Tong & Goo (WAT&G).

So far in my design career I have had opportunities to work on projects in diverse global locations; From California to Cabo San Lucas, Bermuda, Spain, Japan, China, Taipei, the nation island of Mauritius, and The United Arab Emirates. Given the nature of this international work and personal global experiences I have been able to marry creativity in design to business acumen & marketing, my prior to design academic degrees; and shape them into a unique holistic vertically integrated approach to develop defensible, sustainable and branded experiential destinations designed to succeed! Today, Raad Ghantous & Associates/ RG&A is highly respected in the hospitality fields of branded interiors, spa & wellness, food & beverage /restaurant design, and Aging-In -Place, for the high standards of quality, beauty and detail of our projects. The company now also offers a whole range of complimentary services from concept development, funding packages, operational, retail and programming consulting to training and interim onsite management. To think that this all started with a summer certificate program at Interior Designers Institute in Newport Beach so many moons ago where I also was first introduced to ASID as a student member and eventually even lead a group of fellow students on a local design house in Lemon Heights, CA is amazing! So, given the many rewards, both professionally and personally I have thus far been blessed with as a member of our design family, it was very easy for me to say YES! when asked to be on the board of ASID OC and have an opportunity to give back in anyway I could. I am really very excited and looking forward to working with our great staff and wonderful board members, in my capacity as Membership Director, to expand the reach and visibility of our very active local chapter and help develop even more meaningful ways for us to be a strong advocate and asset to my fellow design professionals here in Orange County. Raad Ghantous, Allied ASID Membership Director 2019-2020

Volunteer Spirit Recognized!

B

eing a volunteer means that you are offering something – something that is not required nor an obligation. ... Most of the time, to volunteer means that you are working side by side with others and in the case of ASID OC it most likely means you are working with Miko Krisvoy. She has been involved in so many of our chapter events we couldn’t list them all if we tried. Her volunteer spirit has helped bring success after success to our chapter and after more than a decade of her participation our Chapter President Bill Elson, wanted to recognize her with a Presidential Award to show our deep appreciation for everything she has brought to us. Miko’s unique sense of style and grace shows in everything she does, from her design work to her willingness to lend a hand to what ever amazing new project we come up with, she truly embodies everything an ASID Member should strive to be. We usually present honorees with awards at our Gala in September, we chose to present Miko with this honor at our Holiday Luncheon as she will be embarking on a project in Japan and would not be able to attend the gala later this year. With the love and support of this year’s president and board, Santa himself presented Miko with a custom engraved trophy and the well wishes of all of ASID OC!

Professional Development Director

I

t’s an honor to be elected as Professional Development Director. My journey with OC ASID began as a student in Design School. Going to Design School was a second career path for me. So I was excited to experience and take in as much as I could. Upon hearing about our professional organization OC ASID I joined wholeheartedly. It’s been so beneficial to my personal and professional growth as a designer. As Professional Development Director I want to encourage all OC ASID Students, Members, and Industry Partners to get as much out of being a part of this organization as possible. Attending Monthly Mingles, Pop-Ups, Special Events, Expo, Design Awards, and Gala. Participation in Leadership is a wonderful learning experience. You gain confidence, as well as, flex your leadership skills. In addition, make an impact on the chapter. We are here for you, and together we’ll learn from each other. That’s the beauty of being part of OC ASID. One of the best chapters in the Country. As told by ASID National. Thank you, Alix Flamm, Allied ASID Professional Development Director 2019-2021

October Mingle

W

hat a fabulous kickoff to ASIDOC’s 2019-2020 term at Unique Hardwood in Costa Mesa! A perfect location to mix and mingle around the beautifully displayed wood floors, like paintings in a museum as we caught up with friends and met new designers & IP’s! Jessica Jones and Pam Barthold kicked the night off by introducing the new ASIDOC President Bill Elson. Bill thanked everyone for coming and introduced some of his board, Alix Flamm, Professional Development, Derek Fisher, Director at Large, and Angela Eason, Communication Director. Alix Flamm introduced the host and owner of Unique Hardwood Wendy Meltzer. Wendy thanked everyone for coming then proceeded to give an informative tour of her showroom thus explaining the difference between the different exotic woods and their properties. After the tour Pamela Barthold, Mingles Co-Chair, moderated a Q&A with ASIDOC President Bill Elson. It was a perfect opportunity for members to get to know the President, a well respected designer whose design work can be found internationally and even includes the most expensive high rise in San Francisco! The evening concluded with fun raffles, even a breakfast date with the ASIDOC President! Pam Barthold Co-Chair Mingles

November Mingle

A

rainy evening in November couldn’t stop the ASID OC members from coming out to the beautiful Bassman & Blain Showroom in Irvine to hear the fabulous Ray Langhammer and Paul L’Esperance speak about their amazing careers in Interior Design!

They were greeted by the showroom owner Bill Blaine and his wonderful showroom representatives Kelsey Paterson and Krystal Hunter. All the members and guests were treated to an amazing buffet dinner of salmon and beef tenderloin while they enjoyed the speaker panel. The evening was kicked off by Pamela Barthold, Mingles Co-Chair thanking everyone for coming out despite the rain to enjoy the mingle. President Bill Elson thanked everyone for coming, then proceeded to introduce the fabulous panel of Bill Blaine, Paul L’esperance and Ray Langhammer! Bill Elson MC’d a lively discussion regarding design and being a top tier Designer! Bill Blaine spoke of the history of Bassman & Blaine and what their amazing showroom offers, besides ordering beautiful designer furnishings you can purchase anything off the floor. Paul told of amazing design opportunities he has had in his career designing Graystone, Hearst Castle, Bass lake, and many other magnificent locations across the USA while always striving for the highest level of design creativity! Ray shared with us his favorite design location he has designed in such as Newport Beach, Laguna, and Colorado. He shared how a chance meeting on the way to the airport from a client in Colorado led to another client thus you never know where you will meet your next BIG client! Holiday Luncheon

O

ur Holiday Luncheon Dec. 11, 2019 was a great success! Thanks to our wonderful Titanium Sponsor, Pacific Sales, we enjoyed a fabulous buffet and hors d’ oeuvres at Prego Mediterranean Restaurant in Irvine and were treated to other special happenings (elves passing out stockings, candy cane favors, festive red poinsettias and a surprise visit from Santa)! Many wonderful raffle prizes were given away as well, including a grand prize, a $500 basket from Custom Comfort Mattress which included a beautiful bedsheet set and comforter. At- Large Update Here we go again! What a great start for this year’s ASID board. I’m very excited to be a part of this dynamic group of people. Past President Michele Prata set the bar pretty high, and new ASID OC President Bill Elson is promising to take things to even greater heights. As Board Member at Large, I’m in the unique position to assist in any capacity needed. My primary role is to make sure this year’s Expo is better than ever. With the great group of individuals organizing the Expo this year, it’s a slam dunk! Expect a great year of programs and CEU’s. Thanks for your support of the ASID board. We look forward to seeing you at the monthly mingles! Derek Fisher, Industry Partner

Student Rep to the Board! Greetings and Happy Holidays! I’m super excited to have been asked to be the OC SRB-what a great opportunity to network and get really involved with ASID! A little background on myself: I obtained a degree in Accounting (1989) and went straight into public accounting. After 20 plus years in tax & audit, my husband’s company, asked us to move from Minneapolis, Minnesota to Orange County. Not a terrible transfer! It was at that point I decided to make a career change, so I enrolled at Saddleback and I am currently in their 60 hour certificate program. For the Fall event at LDC we had over 60 students in attendance, as well as many student volunteers! Hopefully, we will be able to convert the student attendees to members! If any ASID members have any ideas for student involvement-please feel free to email me at: studentrep@caoc.asid.org. In terms of future student events, at the moment we have many ideas in the hopper, but just haven’t narrowed it down quite yet! I look forward to some cool design contests, and helping encourage more students to become involved with ASID! I also happy to report Angela Blake as well as many other ASID members are on board to help! As soon as the Student Events have be solidified we will be passing information on to all of the local Interior Design Schools to get as many involved as we can! Super excited to get the ball rolling for the Winter/Spring semesters & to get student participation! Jayne Jacobson, Student ASID
