Student Representative Katherine Ingelstrom, Student ASID International Academy of Design & Technology studentrep@asidcanv.org

Fall is in the air, the leaves are changing in the foothills and the new fiscal year has begun. Your ASID chapter board of directors has been busy preparing events, CEU’s, seminars and designer tours for each area in the ASID California Central/Nevada chapter region. Kathleen Jennison, our Director of Finance, has been diligently working on the change over from FY 2011 to this FY 2012. Kathleen is currently in the process of forming an investment committee for your respective chapter monies in order for it to earn the best possible return this year and next. Rebecca Ward, the Professional Development Director, has taken your surveyed answers from earlier this year and has formed an entire years worth of activities that you the membership have requested. This is no easy task. Planning events involves a bundle of members that step up onto committees and volunteer their personal time away from family, friends and jobs to create an opportunity for you the members to network with other stakeholders in your areas. Sponsors in our communities are asked to fund and attend as well as Industry Partners. Industry Partners create the environment in their business establishments for the use of you, the ASID California Central/ Nevada chapter members, to meet new people and establish new business contacts or to reunite with old friends in our interior design profession. The board, works creatively behind the scenes to give you as members the opportunity to come out and step into a networking event monthly. Please show your personal gratitude to the hardworking board, sponsors, and Industry Partners by attending the events in your surrounding areas. Angela Swindells, our Membership Director, has been working hard on our new loyalty programs. Loyalty programs are points that you gain for each event you attend during the year. You can also gain points for each committee you volunteer for and if you have a position on the board of directors. These points will be tallied up at the end of the fiscal year and the winner with the most points receives an exclusive gift from the chapter. I purposely am not telling you the gift at this time because where is the fun in that? Trust me you will want to participate! Angela will also be contacting those of you periodically throughout the fiscal year to hear your thoughts and opinions. Please take the time to engage. The strategic planning committee this year, Linda Zoerb, Natalie Wyatt, Rebecca Ward, Kathleen Jennison, Stephen Leon and myself created an event this year called the Arch walk. This event will start March 2013 in Las Vegas, Fresno in April, Sacramento in May, and the Arch walk will wrap up in Reno in June. What is this you ask??… In each area we have connected with local fabulous architects and they will allow you, our members, to tour their exclusive buildings, homes, businesses, etc. While enjoying these beautiful interiors rest assured you will be gaining loyalty points. Another exceptional fun idea from the committee is the Dueling Chefs at Fergusons events. These events kick off in Las Vegas in January, Fresno in February, Reno in March, and comes to a sweet end in Sacramento in April. cont. on page 3

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE cont. from page 2

Natalie Wyatt, our Communications Director, has been covered in tasks up to her neck since October 1st. She is appropriately tending to the “face lift” of our chapters website, Studio 49 and social networking channels, i.e. Facebook, LinkedIn, and yes TWITTER!! Smile pretty when you see Natalie coming she will have in hand the chapter’s high resolution camera/video camera! Your pictures will be all over our Studio49 this year as well as an opportunity for you to create a video for our website!! Janice Stone-Thomas, our Director-At-Large this fiscal year. Janice has already bridged with some very important people in the local public/private colleges, and universities. Janice is passionate about networking with the students and the EMERGING PROFESSIONALS! An emerging professional is a new graduate or in the first five years of graduation. Kate Inglstrom, our Student Representative to the board and Janice have designed student events throughout the year. Some very exciting events start in February with the Student Forum in Las Vegas and the Students and Emerging Professionals Luncheon in May. The view of the board is that STUDENTS are our professions future. Our plans are to create networking opportunities for you, the student member, and every month of this calendar year and in every location of our chapter. In order for this to be accomplished we need your volunteerism. Remember every designer needs clocked hours for their personal resume. STEP UP! Stephen Leon, our President- Elect is achieving high end relations for the fiscal year. Stephen has been in conversation with Shriners Children’s Hospital liaison to partner with us on some of our most dear to the heart events. December of this year our events start the holiday spirit off right by giving to charities. In our entire ASID California Central/Nevada chapter’s four area locations will have a holiday event for the members. At the holiday events the request will be to bring a gift for a local charity. On December 2nd in Sacramento our Holiday Soiree is at historic Vizcaya in the garden courtyard. Our charity is Adopt-A-Family. Las Vegas on December 2nd the charity is Shriners Children’s Hospital. Reno’s holiday charity is Adopt-A-Family. Other charity events to look forward to are the Easter Bunny Drives March 18th-21st. Stephen has also been passed the “legislative baton”. As President- Elect another responsibility is the legislative representative. Stephen participates in monthly delegate and stakeholder conference calls with the Interior Design Coalition of California (IDCC). During these calls representatives statewide are informed of the current information on legislation. As the leaves change this fall so does our profession. ASID National, our chapter and the seven other chapters in California have joined hands with Interior Design Coalition of California (IDCC) in support of the goals of ALL our membership. Please take the time to educate yourselves on legislation in our state by visiting Interior Design Coalition of California (IDCC) website: www.idc-ca.org. Lastly, I would like to thank past-president Gail Diehl for her leadership in fiscal year 2011-2012 and bringing back Design Excellence to our chapter. In accordance we have scheduled Design Excellence in Las Vegas July 28, 2013. Gail is not kicking her heels up just yet. Gail is chair for the nominating committee. If you as a member are interested in sitting on the ASID California Central/Nevada board for fiscal year 2013-2014 email your ASID leadership form to ASID National: chapters@asid.org. As you see our calendar is full and we have taken your surveyed answers and LISTENED! We strive to bring you, our members, out of your comfort zone and engage in our communities. Please join us this year in all aspects of your membership to the ASID California Central/Nevada chapter. See you out and about!!! Respectfully, Jennifer Wood, ASID, RID, LEED GA, NCIDQ certificate # 026326 ASID California Central/Nevada President 2012-2013

DeAnna Mackensen, Allied ASID

Since she was a little girl, DeAnna Mackensen had a vast interest in fabrics and could create and sew her own fashions and crafts. With years of practice completing projects around her own home, she can paint, wallpaper, sew, and craft just about anything! DeAnna is a DIY (do-it-yourself ) enthusiast as well as an interior designer. She strongly believes in knowing WHEN to DIY and WHEN to leave it to the professionals! Refurbish, repurpose, upcycle or whatever you call it let’s keep usable items out of the landfills. Put some thought into your design and go wild with paint! Paint can easily turn your throw away item into a treasure. Via social media and the Internet, HGTV magazine discovered a dresser she had repainted. They contacted her and asked to put it in their October issue. Completely humbled and honored she shared the inspiration for the piece. This dresser was originally purchased at Salvation Army for her oldest daughter. I suppose you could say it has had several lives. It is a truly repurposed item. When the time came to pass it on to the youngest child, she was less than impressed. It was time to come up with a fresh design. DeAnna found inspiration in Traditional Home Magazine. The piece is a French Country part of the Les Provinciales furniture collection of Roche Bobois. She took some measurements of the dresser and began designing an asymmetrical stripe pattern. The center medallion trim necessitated extra creativity by painting it green and highlighting the frills of it. She used colors that would accentuate the colors of the bedroom. This striped dresser became the conversation piece of the room. DeAnna Mackensen opened REDesign Interiors in 2010 in Yuba City, California. She is an Allied Member of ASID. She graduated from CSU Chico, California in December 2009 with a BA of Arts with option in Interior Design. Active in the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) as a student she was able to participate in Chico Decorator’s Dream Home 2007 and Frugal House 2009, a fundraiser for the North State Symphony. In the fall of 2009 she built the Coley Chair and it was selected for the first ever Furniture Design Exhibition at CSU Chico. DeAnna has been married for 27 years and has four children. Two of her children have special needs, a cause dear to her heart. Check out DeAnna Mackensen and REDesign Interiors at www.reddezn.com

Legislation - Ask Pat Welcome to “Ask Pat!” My name is Patricia K. Weiss, ASID, and I serve on the Board of Directors for the Interior Design Coalition of California as the Communications Co-Director. This column began as a section of my chapter’s newsletter (thank you, San Diego) and I have been asked to expand into other chapters, so I welcome any new chapters to the column! Our chapters throughout the state of California have been instrumental in their support of IDCC and our common goal of registration for professional interior designers in our state. The purpose for this column is to engage in conversation. I want to be able to answer your legislative question in a format that reaches many. Please send your legislative questions with the subject line “Ask Pat” to communications@idc-ca.org, or submit them through our LinkedIn group discussion page for quicker response. I will choose questions each quarter to provide insight and clarity to our legislative discussion. In this column I would like to answer the question asked of us most recently: “What’s next for our legislative efforts in the state of California?” Your IDCC Board has met multiple times in person this year to develop our work plan for the next 16 months that will take us through the end of September, 2013. Many avenues that need our attention: One of our main goals is to engage as many design organizations in the state to meet together and discuss the common ground that exists in this legislative state and how we can achieve goals that benefit the

profession as a whole. To this end, IDCC is reaching out to CCIDC to participate in a stakeholders meeting in October to discuss common ground. We will keep all informed as to its outcome. Another part of the work plan is to educate our profession on how to engage with their local legislators. Our first event will be held in conjunction with a CEU at Haworth and will include a legislation presentation by Don Davis, on October 4th in Santa Monica. A similar event is being planned for Northern California in November. For more information on events please visit our website calendar. While we are on the subject, we would like to invite you to visit our newly remodeled website, take some time to learn more about IDCC at www.idc-ca.org; then click on the Facebook and LinkedIn buttons to join in the conversation! I look forward to receiving your questions and having the opportunity to serve our chapters with information! Patricia K. Weiss, ASID Communications Co-Director Interior Design Coalition of California

Sacramento: Emser Tile Event By Rebecca Ward, ASID Professional Development Director We had a successful event at Emser Tile in October, our first event of the fiscal year. Deborah Davis, E! Entertainment Hollywood in house designer came to share her fabulous portfolio and touch on being a commercial designer in LA. She highlighted the need for legislation in California that would allow for Interior Designers to submit drawings and pull permits in commercial applications. As it stands, she has to hire an architect to do the drawings if she wants to move a non-structural/non-seismic interior partition four feet, as the LA Building Department doesn’t recognize Certified Interior Designer stamps and seals. Accompanying her was Don Davis from Government Affairs at ASID national. He shared that ASID is doing their part to help improve our current legislation in California. After Deborah’s presentation, we had a CEU on Sustainable Floor Coverings: The Case for Ceramic Tile, presented by Jim Tuttle of Custom Building Products. This led to a great discussion on developments in tile application, grouts and new products from Custom. Many thanks to Emser Tile in Sacramento for hosting the event and lunch.
