Residential Design is by far what I have the most experience with, from designing Kitchens & Baths, selecting flooring, designing showers, or selling furniture. I have had experience with 1000’s of brands, all manner of interior materials, and quoting/spec. Unrealistic deadlines were the norm with some clients deciding to do all of their furniture purchasing in one weekend. I know every area has it’s quirks but my area takes the cake- 80% of my homeowners are considered 2nd home rental properties. So durability expectations are high and the budget is low. Most of the work is accomplished during off seasons, which means our area is hustling between Jan to May. Lastly, these are not your normal homes. While yes I did have a few modest homes, a majority of the homes had 10 or more bedrooms. The largest home I ever helped with was 24 bedrooms and was only accessible by Four Wheel Drive trucks in the town of Carova, NC. So when I say Residential Design- I really mean tiny hotels that cost $8000 to $40’000 thousand dollars to rent out a week.

My work with Government, State, or even non-profit has not always been show worthy, nor did I always have the chance to see my finished work before being used. None the less I do have 10 years of experience working on projects like commercial flooring for the local Coast Guard station, Mattresses for the NCDOT Ferry Devision, or one of my favorites selecting and providing materials and design advice that would become the STAR interactive exhibit for the NC Aquarium. I know all too well the detail and time needed to be given from: selection, to approval, to install on these kinds of projects. Not to mention the investigative work behind the products I sell and ensuring they will perform as expected by my clients.

THE MATERIAL GURU
FABRICS, SWATCH LIBRARY, & MORE
I posses an extensive knowledge of Interior Materials & Selections. I’ve had the responsibility of maintaining and organizing sample library’s, to ensure they are correct for customers to browse easily. I try to constantly learn about the next big trend in pattern, color, or style so I am prepared before the customer ask about it. The environment of the interiors I design require the most out of everything that is used. Knowledge about Interior Materials and how they perform is a must! Materials must be durable, mustn’t cost too much, and have to blend with other items that may not be replaced. I consider it a great advantage having worked in the Kitchen & Bath and Furniture industry. I’ve had the chance to not only learn, but specify, sell and install all manor of materials. So when customers come in and start listing the colors or materials they have or are looking for, I can pretty easily grasp a direction based on a strong visual memory of the items they describe. I have also had many commercial projects over the years. Each one requiring different materials, looks and timelines. I value my knowledge of commercial design selections as I move forward. In the last 10 years I’ve taken extended educational opportunities to learn more about the materials I provide. My favorite being a visit to the Schluter training facility to learn all about their products. I even tried my hand at installing Dietra, Preform Shower Curbs, and Kirdi Membrane. They call me “The Human Catalog” I can recall 1000’s of brands and there products, 1000’s of fabric swatches, and items I saw at High Point Market several months ago. I also have an uncanny ability to recall colors and fabrics from memory. A fantastic advantage when the customer needs to match an existing discontinued fabric and neglected to bring a cushion or photo of the fabric. I enjoy the many fabric types and patterns! I love educating customers about them as well. Especially when they have been mislead by other stores. It’s important to me that customers get their expectation out of their investments.

DESIGN INSPIRATIONS By: Asia Evans Interior Designer
If anything positive came from Hurricane Irene, it was the scattered Driftwood left in her wake. Each one weathered to different shades of grey & brown, smooth or rough in texture, and varying twisting shapes. Driftwood is a beautiful source for design inspiration, adding a natural weathered elegance that remains a classic look on the Outer Banks.
This canvas inspired cotton slipcover offers durability & ease in cleaning. A contrasting piping provides a casual touch.
I recommend selecting fabrics that have a natural quality or appearance like cotton, leather, canvas, bamboo, & jute. A neutral pallet doesn’t mean you need to have a room filled with beige & grey. Remember to add elements of sky, water, or grass to add color to your driftwood inspired pallet. As always see what speaks to you & have fun with it!

& CUSTOMER SERVICE
I would never have thought I had great people skills or the ability to stand up and speak in front of a stranger, but there is something about design that gives me Passion & Power to try. In college I bloomed, finally in and around folks with similar minds to my own. An average student all my life was suddenly top of the class. The shy girl who couldn’t recite a poem infront of peers, was able to stand proudly and present my design for praises or criticisms. I had found my niche! Design is my voice, my confidence, and my drive. After graduating, I would go on and meet many strangers a week in my professions. I’d get to know them well enough (often in one visit) to capture their needs, and then flip it around and present my ideas to them. I’d have to basically sell them on it. An exchange of money for ideas and expertise. It took me a long time to realize my ideas had value. This would happen 1000’s of times, 1000’s of different approaches for the many different types of people & projects I would encounter. Customer Service is a skill that can only be learned by experience. Learning to work with clients is a skill I value the most. I have had my bumps and bruises from situations over the years, but I know in a small area like the Outer Banks, your reputation is everything! Word of Mouth is more valuable than any advertisement. So maintaining a high level of customer satisfaction is crucial. I go above and beyond when needed to close a deal, resolve an issue, or help my customers design dreams come true. I’ve worked late, I’ve been to freezing winter job sites, I’ve had customers beloved dogs all over me on job site visits, I’ve trekked through flood waters post hurricane. You name it, I’ve probably done it. Whatever gets it done!

When I began at both places of Employment, I was given sheets to write my orders & quotes on to give to customers. Without hesitation, I created digital versions of these documents on Excel. This made it easier to edit, email, save and submit my orders without having to start over with every change.
I learned Power Point, although I find it limiting and prefer the ease of InDesign instead. For this particular project, I was required to apply ADA Accessibility to a Vacation. Making sure to investigate the cottages, restaurants, and beach gear for the required compliance with ADA codes.
Mood Boards and investigating materials to create my vision is by far one of my favorite things to do. above:On this particular project I communicated my vision with 2 inspiration images, followed by the materials I suggest to use to create her space. To keep my boards clean I assign numbers to each image that corresponds to a quote or spec sheet. left: For this client, I provided more inspiration and type to explain my design.
Scope: Develop a Themed Pediatric Facility with specific requirements. Individual Project
Looking back at these early school projects, I feel like I’ve come along way. They were in the early era of the design program where we had to hand draft & hand draw everything. I remember how much fun I had creating these projects. My passion was overflowing with ideas. Hand Drafting & Hand Rendering
SPACE PLANNING Space Planning plays a role in everything I do, whether I’m placing furniture in a home or in our 60’000 sq.ft. Showroom. I have to perfectly blend all the elements while complying with restrictions to execute my designs. The retail space I work at is unlike other stores in that everything is for sale and able to be delivered within days. This presents a challenge of having to constantly rearrange and restyle our massive space. I have always enjoyed space planning and I love applying it to both interiors and our store. Using the basic design principles, planning & research all help me to acomplish my goals in Interior Design. Hand Drafting & Hand Rendering
Concept Design is a skill that causes so many sleepless nights. I love the pre-planning and research that goes into creating the final space. I couldn’t get enough of building models in school and only wish our projects required more. In the case on the project shown above, my team and I found inspirations from things like CD’s, furs, Glass beads and more. We then developed that into our concept, mood and inspiration boards. We planned the cruise ship cabins and had to present to the class.

AI Portfolio Review
I did not have the budget for AutoCad post graduation, in fact my computer was so old it probably wouldn’t have handled it. So when I needed to show room layouts I researched and discovered SketchUp and its free use capabilities. I was a little limited, but it helped me greatly when presenting projects. Whilst teaching myself SketchUp, I referred to some of my favorite designers & architects to turn their finished rooms into digital drawings. I practiced using the available catalog furnishings or I learned to manipulate my own when needed. That was the case here with the furnishings. I then find all the necessary design elements that were more in budget to my customers needs & lifestyle. I would do this often to create look books for customers to enjoy.
LINES IN DESIGN
I was approached by a friend who needed her master bathroom remodeled. Her family home presented a very difficult design challenge. Not one wall meets at a right angle throughout the entire house. The original thought was to make the sound front house hurricane wind resistant. What this thought created was one of the most difficult field measures I have ever encountered. The homeowner had strong ideas already in mind, however they were limiting her with the existing layout. I designed a few rough designs to show her how the space could be used. I encouraged her to open up the space. Taking the center wall out which is shown in Option 1, in favor of my design in Option 3. This design saved her from having to move the toilet, but still allowed for privacy. Knowing also she would loose precious cabinet space with her unusual angles, I tried to change from an L-Shape design she wanted to the long vanity with plenty of storage above and below.
DEADLINES IN DESIGN
A 7 DAY MAKEOVER
This 2 Bedroom Condo retreat called for very fast renovating. The homeowner required all work, shopping, and install to be completed within a week. The homeowner set several requirements which restricted options available in her time frame. I worked from real estate photos and created several looks based on what I had available. The outcome is a updated rental condo and retreat. Before
BEFORE & AFTER BUDGET DESIGN MAKEOVERS BEFORE
This project was a risky investment by my customers part. The dilapidated oceanfront beach box needed a lot of work and the location is literally about 100 ft from the Ocean. One storm hitting just right and it’s gone. The goal was to create an updated coastal rental with a modest budget. I used Ashley Furniture & Jofran to keep in budget but still offer great style. I proposed a look of blue and orange with retro style occasional pieces. We struggled with getting the most amount of seating in a long narrow rooms. We opted for 2 dining tables and multiple sets of matching upholstery.

MANAGEMENT & TEAMWORK Most of my career I have always been introduced as the stores interior designer. Compared to larger companies, I carried a lot of hats with my single title and there were few title advancement opportunities. Yet my duties & responsibilities far surpassed just Sales & Interior Design. As a Kitchen & Bath designer I was responsible for a team of subcontracted installers for all of my projects. I made sure they: executed my design as planned, showed up to the job, and had the materials they needed. I measured, estimated, ordered, collected payments, and set up delivery for every element in my design. When needed, I also had to manage damages/issues and/or replacements. Since starting at Manteo Furniture, my initial job was sales and marketing, but in a few short years I became the lead buyer for all of our Upholstery and Accessories. Responsible for attending the High Point Furniture Market twice a year to buy for the store. This takes planning, budgeting, and working with my team to bring the looks together to the beautiful finished showroom. I’m also a trusted advisor for how the store expands and renovates. I’ve assisted with 3 major in house renovations and I often have the ear of the owner on these major changes & investments. TEAMWORK I have always been completely trustworthy to employers to complete my job independently or as part of a team. Even when completing my independent task, I am always fully aware of the connection between my job and my fellow employees like my installers or delivery crew. We are all dependent on one another for success. Opposite Page: I feel one of my greatest achievements while working at Manteo Furniture was insisting we promote our 70th Anniversary. Celebrating a milestone is something the store has never done. At the same time we planned an addition with a Chamber Open House Mixer centered around our new showroom devoted to Outdoor Furniture. I managed the daily work on the addition, managed the campaign, and managed the showroom layout.
