The DNC'S Eye on Asian Americans

As the Democratic National Convention (DNC) descends for the first time upon Charlotte this Labor Day, preparations made by residents of North Carolina and planners for the Democratic National Committee will spring into action. By the time you read this issue, the Queen City will be bursting with an estimated 35,000 delegates, staff, media, and special guests from all over the country marking the first time ever the Convention was held in North Carolina. Not only will the convention be a boon for Charlotte’s businesses, but also for the Asian American community around the country. The Democratic National Convention is held every four years to officially nominate the democratic candidate for President of the United States. 6,000 delegates from the fifty states and territories such as Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands will assemble at the Time Warner Cable Arena in uptown Charlotte. Following that assembly, President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will both become the official Democratic candidates for this November’s presidential election. Throughout the week of the Convention, various caucus meetings and events will celebrate President Obama’s and the Democratic Party’s accomplishments over the last four years and will focus on the work ahead. Training events will be offered to teach how to reach out to our communities and provide help to those that want to exercise their right to vote. Many people do not fully understand the complex process by which our Presidential candidates are selected or the delegates select them. The process is subject to as much misunderstanding as the Electoral College with most Americans, but it represents the

building blocks of how our government works. The delegates (officially known as “pledged delegates) that come for the official nomination on Thursday evening come in many different varieties. Each delegate is elected or chosen at the state and local levels, usually at each state’s Democratic Party Convention, in an often difficult process, with the understanding that he or she will support a particular candidate at the national convention. Democratic Party rules dictate that each state party must reach out to diverse groups to encourage participation and inclusion in the delegate selection process. Each state’s delegation must also be comprised of an equal number of men and women. Some of the 6,000 delegates coming to Charlotte are also “superdelegates” who are usually Democratic members of Congress, governors, former Presidents, and other party leaders. In this way, an elected official can also be a pledged delegate at the DNC. 320 of the nearly 6,000 delegates are Asian American, most of which are leaders of their communities in their home states. It is unclear whether each state’s Democratic Parties have improved their outreach efforts to select diverse delegates to send to the convention, but it is clear that the significance of the overall Asian American vote is starting to be recognized by campaigns and voters alike. Asian Americans are the fastest growing group in the country, outpacing Hispanics as of 2010. North Carolina has one of the fastest growing populations of Asian Americans having increased 85% in the last 10 years. Having grown from fewer than 4,800 about forty years ago to more than 215,000 today, more attention is being paid to Asian Americans during

the presidential election and the state’s Asian American leadership is preparing to welcome the delegates to the DNC. The Asian Herald Newspaper and the Carolinas Asian American Chamber of Commerce will be hosting an event for several prominent members of government, including Congressman Mike Honda, Congresswoman Judy Chu, and Assistant to the President and Cabinet Secretary Chris Lu to meet Asian American community leaders and delegates from the Carolinas and beyond. The Asian Herald Library will also be providing busing for delegates and guests as well as lodging for supervolunteers and event space for various Asian American outreach related trainings. The DNC is an opportunity for Charlotte to connect with people from all over the country. While President Obama will in town for his official nomination, he only represents the tip of the iceberg that Charlotte will be cradling the entire week of the Convention. Outside of the view of the cameras and the media, people that have the same issues and want to achieve the same goals will be meeting and forming coalitions. Community leaders and organizers form relationships that will push those same communities forward everywhere. As the publisher of the Asian Herald, I welcome everyone that has come to Charlotte for the Convention. Over the last 19 years since this newspaper began this city, which has grown so quickly in so short a time, has come to represent the new and the possible. For that reason I believe that Charlotte is a fitting place to host the DNC, and I hope that it will represent the same to you.■ by Dr. Ki- Hyun Chun

Asian cultures represented in Charlotte encompass over 13 nations. One of the missions of the CAACC is to unite all of these groups to better service the public. Asian history spans thousands of years and its culture is rich and diverse. The CAACC strives to provide business opportunities and to promote business actiAvities through cultural events, such as the annual Asian Festival & Dragon Boat Races each spring and Asian celebrations in the Fall that display our resources and share with you our ethnic qualities. Forty years ago, there were less than 200 Asians and only 8 Asian businesses in the Regional Charlotte Area, but this number has grown to 55,000 Asians and 630 businesses directly involved with Asians. Considering average gross sales of $480,000 a year per business, the Asian population of this area is generating $302 million in revenues, contributing greatly to the regional economy. We invite you to join the CAACC for unique resources, and then cross the bridge between the East and the West.■ Dr. Ki-Hyun Chun (Founder & the first President)

The Carolinas Asian-American Chamber of Commerce (CAACC) hosted Asian Festival Sponsors at Deejai Restaurant on August 13. Deejai is a wellknown Thai family owned restaurant in the heart of Myers Park tucked in the corner of the space that once housed the Myers Park Pharmacy. Located at 613 Providence Road, 28207 it is just one door down from the Manor Theater. If you’ve been in Charlotte for any length of time, I’m sure you remember it. They are popular, busy, and the food is absolutely fabulous. So much so, that the CAACC hosted a special Recognition Dinner there for all of the Sponsors who support the Asian Festivals. The 13th Asian Festival and 7th Dragon Boat Races were held on May 5, 2012 at Ramsey Creek Park in Cornelius on Lake Norman. The Recognition Dinner to honor the representatives from the Sponsors was held at 6:30 on Monday, August 13 to a crowd that filled every table and space available. Typically Deejai is closed on Monday, but they graciously opened up for this special occasion. The CAACC Board greetedsponsors that included: Adams Advertising;Alan Gordon Immigration Law; Arts & Science Council; AT&T; Bank of America; Belk; Chun Group, Inc; Duke; EMZY; Food Lion; Greer & Walker LLP; Mecklenburg Parks & Recreation; Morningside Marina; Piedmont Gas; Siemens; TIAA Cref; URS; and Wells Fargo. CAACC Chair Dr. John Chen presented each sponsor a beautifully framed Asian Festival Poster. Without the Sponsors, the Festivals wouldn’t be able to operate, so a huge and sincere thank you to everyone who sponsored, volunteered, or served in any capacity to bring such a vibrant event to the Region.■ by Andrea Lee

New President of Charlotte Korean Association

On August 12, the Asian Library hosted the inauguration of the new President of Charlotte Korean Association, Mr. H.S Peng. Members of the community gathered to hear the directions and possibilities offered by a new journey along Mr. Peng. As the new elected President, he had words of hope and encouragement. The community has seen many great things happening under Mr. Jin Kyung Kim leadership; senior association activities, great events and celebrations, memorials honoring veterans, just to name a few. However, with imminent changes in all political arenas (local and national), and the unpredictable economy, everyone is embracing the opportunity for a new beginning. Mr. Peng resume is quite impressive. His education includes International Law & Taekwondo at Korea University (Seoul, S. Korea); Certified International Master Instructor; Certified International Referee; 7th Degree Taekwondo Black Belt; and 6th As business owner, he created Pang’s U.S. Taekwondo/Hapkido Academy (Gastonia) in 1992. Also, he is the Founder & President of The International Martial Arts Association, established In 2002.His hard work of 40 years gave

him quite a reputation In Martial Arts. Mr. Peng has been involved in the community life, along his career. He served as President of the U.S.A. Bonguk-Gumdo Association; he is a Former North Carolina State Taekwondo Association Official (Presidential Adviser). He served as Chairman of the North Carolina State Taekwondo Organization Executive Board of Directors and NCTO Advisory Board, and Director Of The Hwarang Classic Taekwondo Championship since 1997. Co-Director, Coordinator, & Coach For Numerous Competitions Such As The NC State Championships, Us Champion Of The Year, Etc. and President of Charlotte Korean Association His work brought many awards and recognitions; just to list a few: Certificates of Recognition for Marksmanship and Special Forces Training from the Commander of the South Korean Army and The Special Assignment Of Security Officer From Former President Y.S. Kim Of South Korea in 1988. He also received Numerous Awards and Certificates From Local, State, National, And International Agencies For Leadership In Furthering The Development And Promotion Of Martial Arts / Taekwondo At Master Pang’s school he teaches respect to both young and old. He teaches them the value of their history by teaching them his history…he teaches them the value of being a leader in the community by example…he teaches them to respect their family by showing his love for his own family…students learn to respect Master Pang and in turn they get the greatest gift, they learn to respect themselves. I wish everyone had an opportunity to be a part of Korean culture; I wish everyone had the ability to be in a place like Master Pang’s Taekwondo School. I am honored to call him my friend. You have chosen your new President wisely; he has the heart of a teacher and an indomitable spirit. ”.■

Thoughts from the Speech on Korea By Cathy Young, former Mayor of Cramerton

(I apologize for not having a written speech, I speak from the heart. This is the best of my memory from what I said that night; please feel free to make changes if you remember anything differently) I was asked to share a few words about my thoughts and experiences with Korean culture this evening. I am sorry it will be in English as I am not as accomplished as you who speak both languages! I met Master Pang 5 years ago, I was his student at Pang’s Taekwondo and my son Austin is still a student there. I have always thought Korean culture is a very rich beautiful culture…the food, the history, the language, the customs, the people, and the country itself. If I were to define Korea in one word it would be “respect”. That is a very important word and something I know a thing or two about. My father was a U.S. Army Colonel, my husband David spent 30 years in law enforcement as Chief of Police…believe me, I know a thing or two about respect. I wish the United

States could learn what Korea already knows about respect. I wish Americans understood the value of respect. I spent a few years teaching middle school during my time as Mayor. I loved being a teacher but I was also saddened by what I saw…the new teachers didn’t respect the older teachers, the students didn’t respect each other, or the school police officers, or their teachers…and worst of all they didn’t respect themselves. At Master Pang’s school he teaches respect to both young and old. Thank you again for allowing me to be here with you tonight!.■

In Black Mountain, North Carolina, there is a community of retired missionaries that ministered in Korea. Many of them are in turn the children of missionaries from the 1920s and 1930s whose parents had also been missionaries to Korea. Most of the retirees are in their late 80s or mid 90s and their numbers are steadily decreasing; today there are 25 left. Although these second generation missionaries have retired and live in Black Mountain, the mission work of the Lord in Korea continues through a third generation, extending now to North Korea. The mission statement of Christian Friends of Korea (CFK) is, “Bringing hope & healing to the people of North Korea in the name of Christ.” Their website: has

information about CFK’s missions work including medical treatment (particularly for Tuberculosis), training center construction, lab training, greenhouse & water system assessments and irrigation, and much more. CFK operates through its partnership with Stanford University, the Bay Area TB Consortium and its many volunteers. The Linton family is especially involved in CFK. Heidi Linton, married to Andy Linton, is the Executive Director for CFK. James Linton is the executive Director for the project. He is also an engineer and frequently travels to North Korea, where he trains North Koreans in construction and design. He also holds fundraisers with Christians in South Korea and the US. James speaks fluent Korean but says his brother in South Korea, Dr. Stephen Linton, Ph.D., speaks Korean much better. Their brother also ministers in Korea through his medical ministry, “Wellspring.” All five brothers follow in their mother Elizabeth Linton’s footsteps as she is a second generation missionary to Korea. Mariella T. Provost was first introduced in the the Asian Herald’s Publisher’s Corner article titled, “The Authority of Sacrifice” in the January 2012. She was born and raised in South Korea, the daughter of missionaries. Following her education in the US, she went back to Korea as a registered nurse. Mrs Provost also lives in Black Mountain. Even at the age of 88 she still leads a list of self-sacrifice by helping Malawi orphans.

they really want to be and be role models for others like them. More Jeremy Lins or Ken Jeongs (who taught us you can be a famous comedian actor AND a doctor!). He has helped Americans like me by expanding healthcare to reduce health disparities for illnesses affecting Asian Americans such as diabetes, chronic health hepatitis B, and liver cancer. He signed an executive order to address issues important to the Asian American community. He also doubled the number of Asian American active federal court judges and appointed an unprecedented three Asian American Cabinet members, including Secretary of Energy Steven Chu, former Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke, and Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki. I will be voting for Barack Obama because I firmly believe that he is still the right man for the job. Let’s not forget that he is the president that faced down the Great Recession, passed the stimulus, took out Osama bin Laden, reformed health care, and saved the auto and banking industries from catastrophic failure along the way. But I will also be voting for him because I believe he has made more people care in a time when added participation in our democracy, not apathy toward it, is necessary to keep America strong. Democracy is not a spectator sport. I never realized what I was missing out on by not being into sports until my Jeremy Lin moment, when I saw that anyone can win the game so long as they’re ready and on the court. Asian Americans are the fastest growing population in the country, and we are more organized than ever. We only recently became a margin for victory (i.e. there are enough people in the overall population registered to vote to make a difference) which means that for perhaps the first time, the ball is in our court. Let’s see if we can’t help win this one for us and for everyone.■ EMZY Nikko Nakato

The First Asian Church Celebrates Its 35th Year

by Sunny Chun, Editor

The history of Charlotte’s KoreanAmerican community began in the 1970’s and was marked by the formation of the first Asian-American church in all of North Carolina. This church was formed in Charlotte on August 28, 1977 at the First Assembly of God Church building on Eastway Drive. At the time, there were less than 160 Korean-Americans living in the Charlotte area. When the Church held its first worship service, 150 KoreanAmericans attended. The congregation then purchased its own building on East Morehead Street in 1979. The Church remained at the Morehead Street address until it moved for a second time to 701 Scaleybark Road in 2000 to a much larger facility at 17,500 square feet. They later added a gym and educational building for a total of 33,000 square feet, which makes it the largest Asian American church between Washington, DC to Atlanta. The Church recently celebrated its 35th Anniversary on August 26th 2012. It has come a long way since it first began in 1977. Thirty five years ago, the Church served as a means for the community to gather together for recent immigrants who were homesick and wanted a taste of their native land. It was a chance for fellow immigrants to see each other, eat their native food, and share information on how to adjust to a foreign home. It was a chance to relate and identify with others who had the same experiences such as the difficulties raising their children in a foreign home, keeping their businesses afloat, or adapting in their jobs as immigrants to the U.S. It provided an opportunity not only for Christian fellowship but also for fellowship with common countrymen. It was a powerful and effective means of evangelism for Korean-Americans in Charlotte due to these circumstances. Korean immigration to the U.S. must be understood in the context of South Korea’s economic distress after the Korean War in 1950 which was followed by political instability. This era of instability and economic crisis ended with the strong leadership of President Park, Jung Hee

who came to power through a military coup d’etat in 1962. Whatever opinions on how he came to power may be, it is commonly accepted that he ushered Korea to embark on an awakening of the nation’s economy. In those days, everywhere you turned, you would only see goods that had been imported from other countries. During this awakening, the whole nation put all its efforts into building manufacturing companies and introduced immigration opportunities for its citizens to take advantage of abroad. In certain countries, Korean immigrants took mostly manual work that natives did not want, such as miners in Ger-

uted to the “Economic Miracle” of today’s South Korea. It was in this context that the KoreanAmerican population in the Charlotte area grew. As time passed, the population of Korean-Americans increased and the demography changed with each family and that family’s changing job or business situation. Families began to invite more family members, generations grew out of previous generations, and different groups of different ages and denominations emerged. This pattern was common among other Asian ethnicities as well. Now 35 years later in Charlotte, we have over 40 Korean churches, for a

many and farmers in Brazil and Argentina. There were also very well educated college graduates who had no real job opportunities in Korea who were seeking to immigrant to other countries for better opportunities. America was the most attractive country for these people. The U.S. needed medical doctors and Registered Nurses at the time, so many MDs and RNs came to the US and were trained and licensed to practice medicine. They made a better life in the U.S. and contributed greatly to the nation’s well-being. In addition, many excellent universities in the U.S. were willing to offer full scholarships to well-qualified foreign students with demonstrated ability to excel in their studies during the mid 1960s – 1970s. This also resulted in some of the most brightest and talented Koreans coming to America to pursue better educational opportunities who also contributed greatly to the U.S. in many different fields. In addition, some of these American-educated Koreans returned to Korea and contrib-

population of about 5,500; 9 Chinese churches for a population of about 6,800; 9 Vietnamese churches for a population of about 18,000; 2 Montagnard churches for a population of about 1,000; 2 Philippine churches for a population of about 3,200; 2 Burmese church for a population of about 1,000; 2 India church for a population of about 12,000;1 Malaysian church for a population of about 1,000; 1 Indonesian church for a population of about 1,200; 1 Lao church for a population of about 1,200 and 1 Cambodian church for a population of about 1,200. These Asian churches have worship service and ministry in their native languages mainly. However, because their children go to school in the US, these churches also need to have bilingual staff for the 2nd generation children. This is the challenge most Asian American churches face in Christian Education for the next generation. This challenge was certainly felt by the Charlotte Presbyterian Church, as it was the very first Asian-American

church in North Carolina and therefore, witnessed the changing demographics of its congregation, perhaps more than any other Asian-American church. In an effort to meet this challenge head-on, the current vision of the Charlotte Presbyterian Church (CPC) is ‘Multi Ethnicity and Next Generation Ministry’. CPC is doing ‘Here and Now Ministry’ with its facility with Head Pastor Sam Na who is perfectly bilingual. In addition, the church building also houses Hope Community Church with a congregation of over 450, which utilizes the gym with a capacity to hold 750 people and over 15 class rooms for the children’s ministry. The church building also houses two Asian churches, one Montagnard church with a congregation of about 100 and one Burmese church with a congregation of over 30, which uses church facilities during Sunday afternoons. On weekdays church facilities are used to host cultural events when needed. This fall, the Charlotte Presbyterian Church is hosting The 10th Annual Global World Mission Convention by KIMNET (Korean Inter Mission Network) during the week of October 15 to October 21, 2012. This Convention is a worldwide event, for missionaries and speakers invited from all over the world to come to hold workshops. For the last 10 years, many mega-size churches with mega-mission work have hosted this annual convention. However, for this year, KIMNET saw the need for medium to small churches in the US to carry the Great Commission of Jesus Christ to the world as well. As a result, the 2012 Convention Mission is to assist these size churches into mission ministry. The KIMNET Convention will offer a very special cultural night program on October 18, 2012. The program will be in English and will include a Russian Angel Choir from Moscow led by Missionary Paul Kim, Tiger Tae Kwon Do demonstrations and other cultural events along with guest speaker, Dr. Bruce Johnson, President of Serving In Mission (SIM), who will deliver the night’s message. Charlotte Presbyterian Church continues to serve the Lord as the Body of Christ and is thankful for His protection and guidance for the last 35 years. We pray that this church will carry out its purpose and continue to evolve in its mission as the first Asian Church in this area.■

According to related research, Americans did not pass National Health Insurance as the Europeans and Canadians did, because the program was not demanded here. Although needed, the voters did not pack the polls nor did they speak up. It is a dynamic interaction between public preference and public policy and a great relationship between what people think about government and what government does or does not think and do. If government fails to act in response to public pressure, citizens lose faith in public institutions (Steinmo/Watts). Still, critics of the Canadian health system have held upon the “wait time” as ammunition. For example, Nadeem Esmail and Michael Walker of Canada’s free-market Fraser Institute wrote last year in the Review that “rationing services by imposing longer waits is inherently inefficient. The very existence of chronic delays in delivering services implies that the system is failing to use prices to equate supply and demand.” That proposition invites critical comment. The idea that a market approach to healthcare care can avoid rationing is a misleading cliché in the American debate on health policy. Emzy Sushi Bar & Asian Kitchen Already successful, Emzy Sushi bar & Asian Kitchen restaurant was established in January of this year. Even though it has been in business for only seven months, it has already established a regular clientele and is doing well. There is indication that this is a good restaurant by the number of customers dinning in for lunch during the middle of the week. Emzy has apparently developed a customer base already. The restaurant atmosphere, quality of the food, and polite wait staff certainly are contributing factors. The location is also convenient for patrons who work uptown and can easily walk to Emzy. This is the original restaurant location. The style of interior décor is modern upscale with table cloths and cloth napkins and very unique entrée serving dishes. Soft modern jazz from a Muzak channel at a low volume level subtly fills the background, while building up an anticipation of the food that should soon follow. The restaurant seats approximately 72 dining customers at about 18 tables and has about 14 seats at the bar. A variety of different sake bottles line a colored translucent backlit wall. Main courses offer a choice of tofu, chicken, beef, shrimp, or scallop (in most cases) in a number of styles including crispy sesame, glazed orange peel, hibachi, basil flavor with lemongrass, spicy stir-fried, and a Thai spicy curry with a hint of coconut milk served with a generous portion of your choice of white, fried, or brown rice.

“You want your boy to have a pony don’t you? And want him to go to the university and to Harvard and to Europe on a Grand Tour?” “Oh, of course,” cried Melanie, her face lighting up… “College?” asked Melanie’s fault flat voice. “Oh, yes! The university and Harvard and Europe (of the Grand Tour) … (Five years from now on the web for free you'll be able to find the best lectures in the world. It will be better than any single university)。

The Church’s News
