Andrea Lee: 2014 Jian Dong Memorial Award

2014 董坚纪念奖获得者--Andrea J. Lee The Jian Dong Award was started by Dr. Ki-Hyun Chun in 2009. It was meant to honor those individuals who have provided dedicated and outstanding service to the Asian community in the Carolinas. The Asian Herald is trying to set a moral and character standard for the future generations. The publisher of the Asian Herald, Dr. Chun, truly admires Dr. Dong's integrity and character, so the award was named after him. Dr. Jian Dong was a truly kind personality. Always a smile on his face, he was an accomplished architect and an enthusiastic player of the erhu, a Chinese musical instrument similar to a bow. He seemed to reach out to everybody he knew to be enthusiastic about their lot in life. This year, Andrea Lee was chosen to be the recipient of this prestigious award. She has contributed to the Asian community in too many ways to count, not the slightest of which was her critical role in the formation and operation of the Asian Festival when it started in 2000. This award was presented on June 8, at the Asian Herald library. Chun Group and the Asian Herald organized the party, inviting all the guests and making sure there was enough food and drink for all. Over one hundred people showed up, packing the library and filling almost every single seat available. The food varied widely, from sushi to fruit. It spanned many Asian ethnicities, filling everybody's plates with an array of cross-culture meals. It was all delicious, and there was a great selection of drinks to wash it all down. At about 6:15 pm, after everybody settled down, Rev. Sung-Kyun Na gave a blessing for the food. Around 7:20, the main event began. Dr. Chun started off the night with a thank-you to the Korean war veterans. He showed a video, with clips from

the war and voiced by a letter from the president of South Korea himself. Those present came to the front, and Colonel Billy Reid gave an eloquent speech about those veterans still alive. He mentioned that, last month, four Korean veterans in Charlotte passed away. He talked about the Korean War Veterans Memorial in North Carolina, and how it is a beautiful site that is free to visit. He says it is the second-biggest Korean War memorial in the country, second only to the national memorial in Washington, D.C. After the speech, they presented to Andrea a gift: a song. They sang in chorus with the piano, a beautiful harmony that carried with it the happiness of life. All of the previous winners of the award were there, with the exception of the first winner of the award, Jian Dong himself. They were all very happy to be there and to be a part of this event; they beamed with pride as Andrea was presented with the award. The previous recipients are as follows: Robert Lee (2010), Walli Pamilla (2011), Nimish Bhatt (2012), and James Meena (2013). The late Jian Dong's son, Dr. Ankang Dong, and grandson, Peter Dong, also came to support the event. The two gave a speech about the late Jian Dong, and how he influenced their lives and their character. Their family played a song for the congregation, a beautiful song with multiple instruments that matched well the multifaceted talent their deceased relative seemed to embody. In a particularly thoughtful gesture, Dr. Chun invited Mrs. Xela Pinkerton to sing for us. Xela Pinkerton is a magnificent opera singer with a truly remarkable voice. She left over one hundred people breathless with wonder at the end of her second song. There was other great news announced, as well. Dr. Ki-Hyun Chun announced that he and his wife, Dr. Sunny Chun, will be opening

Chun University in 2015. The news came June 5, 2014; they received an acceptance letter from the Board of Governors and the president of the University of North Carolina. Chun University is specializing in Christian music and Christian education. At the moment, though, they have three professors for Chun University already in place, and the board is already filled with prestigious people. Dr. Sun-Shin Chun recognized the board members for Chun University. The future for Chun University is looking bright! Rev. Marty McCarthy is working on Unity Charter School for Dr. Chun. Marty McCarthy explained the postponing of the opening of the charter school until 2016. Maestro James Meena, the Director of Opera Carolina, announced the second Art, Poetry, and Music concert for September 13, 2014. He invited several world-class opera singers as well as Asian opera singers to introduce opera to the general public of the Carolinas. At 8:30 pm, to wrap everything up, Dr. Chun gave out a few 'thank you' prizes. In these were a Korean melon, a Korean pear, a Korean fan, and a pair of sunglasses. Dr. Chun included the sunglasses for personal reasons; when he was a young boy in Korea, he saw a military man wearing them, and he thought they looked great. The man noticed the young boy Ki-Hyun Chun's excitement and gave him the sunglasses, creating a great story for the Dr. Chun of today of his childhood. Dr. Chun passed on the glasses and the story to future generations by giving out these prizes. To all the people who helped to make this event possible, thank you. To Andrea Lee, thank you even more. There is nothing quite as important as having honest, kind, and intelligent people in positions where they are able to make use of their talents. ■

Asian cultures represented in Charlotte encompass over 13 nations. One of the missions of the CAACC is to unite all of these groups to better service the public. Asian history spans thousands of years and its culture is rich and diverse. The CAACC strives to provide business opportunities and to promote business activities through cultural events, such as the annual Asian Festival & Dragon Boat Races each spring and Asian celebrations in the Fall that display our resources and share with you our ethnic qualities. Forty five years ago, there were less than 200 Asians and only 8 Asian businesses in the Regional Charlotte Area, but this number has grown to 55,000 Asians and 870 businesses directly involved with Asians. Considering average gross sales of $520,000 a year per business, the Asian population of this area is generating $452 million in revenues, contributing greatly to the regional economy. We invite you to join the CAACC for unique resources, and then cross the bridge between the East and the West.■ Dr. Ki-Hyun Chun (Founder & the first President)

Recognitions at the FAPAC

The Federal Asian Pacific American Council met in Charlotte at the Sheraton Hotel downtown on May 5. There was a great turnout; the room was packed with people and every seat was filled for their annual Awards Banquet. The banquet started off with speeches of thanks from the most recent president and the current president acknowledging both the sponsors and their value as well as the hard work the officers of the organization put into their events and causes. After the speeches, the CCC of NC and Sena Sopheap provided beautiful cultural Cambodian royal dances to warm up the audience. The Vice President, Peter Nguyen, stood up after the dances and introduced all of the officers of FAPAC by bringing them onstage with him. This heartfelt speech of thanks was succeeded by a dinner break. The food was delicious, and the hotel had also set up a bar in case anybody was thirsty. There were even cooks! During the meal, there were door prizes given based on how long people had been working for the government. It was great fun. After everybody settled down, Nimish Bhatt (The current president of the CAACC) went up to make a brief speech. He

introduced Dr. Chun (publisher of the Asian Herald and first president of the CAACC), and Dr. Chun then gave a short speech of his own celebrating the Asian community's growth in the Carolinas, citing a massive increase in both population and business ownership. The president of FAPAC, Dr. Kin Wong, came up to the stage at the tail end of Dr. Chun's speech to shake his hand and thank him for his service to his community. This was succeeded by a beautiful set of dances by the Phillipine Cultural Dance Troupe of Charlotte, the last of which was a dance involving bamboo called "Tinikling." All three of the dances were fascinating, and the choreography was wonderful. The FAPAC provided a delightful kick-off to their week-long Leadership Training Program, and from the looks of it the rest of the event was just as lovely.

A model officer and father

by Susan Palmes-Dennis

He didn’t just earn praise from his fellow Vietnamese Americans. Officer Tam L. Phan of the CharlotteMecklenburg Police Department also has the respect of the whole Asian-American community in the Carolinas. A Vietnamese American who came to the US 17 years ago, Phan integrated himself and learned to love his adoptive country. I was told by the editor of Asian Herald, Roxanna Dimitriu, to interview him and I was initially apprehensive because I didn’t know him. It was only after I received an email from Officer William “Bill” Haynes, recruitment coordinator of the CMPD (known as LEC) that I decided to call officer Phan, and I was surprised that he was very accommodating. I didn’t expect that it would be an easy interview; when I set the time Tam had no problems and we eventually met at the interview room of CMPD headquarter known as LEC at East trade Street of Charlotte and he met me and my husband Ronnie at the parking area. Married with a five monthold daughter, Officer Phan said he migrated to New Jersey 17 years ago. At 20 years old, Phan went to a community college and studied computer graphics and moved with his mother to California. On the spot In 2003 he joined the army and was assigned at Fort

Drum: 10th mountain Light Infantry division in upstate New York and was assigned at the New York-Canadian army border. He was in the army for four years and got deployed to Iraq in 2006. A year later he got out. Phan chose not to re-enlist but applied to be in law enforcement and so he joined the CMPD in the South. “When I was about to get out of the Army there are recruitment agencies with recruitment programs. One of them was the CMPD who went to New York to administer the exam,” Phan recounted. “I don’t see myself as a truck driver or working in the restaurant. Not that I don’t like being one but I was already looking for a career that is somewhat related to the military. I sat down with the counselor and I was deeply thinking about joining law enforcement since the benefits are good and the security,” he said. There were several police agencies recruiting including the New York Police Department and even the Highway Patrol. Phan said he and 20 soldiers took the exam administered by the CMPD on the spot. Learning process “It was basic police exam,” Phan said. He didn’t know where Charlotte was on the map and a friend of him told him about the beauty of the Queen City. He was already in California several weeks after the examination when Phan was told that he passed

the exam administered by the CMPD. Phan was asked if he could fly to Charlotte for an interview. “It was my first time in the south and since I was not born here in US it was sort of a culture shock. I thought law enforcement is the same. Conducting the business is different. It was really a learning process for me,” Phan said. Eventually Phan learned to love his job and the communities that he served. “When you put your heart into it you end up strong,” he said. Being a patrol cop or beat cop, Phan said his work is a 24/7 duty to the community. He said patrols are the backbone of the police department and every citizen is expected to follow local and state laws. “As cops we are here to deter crime while the army is on a mission,” Phan said. Committed Phan is proud that he received commendation for his work which would be the basis for a pay increase and promotion. “Patrolling is simple work that the community

appreciates,” he said. Phan is assigned to Eastway division and his daily patrol response areas are the Plaza Midwood, Noda, Belmont Allen, Villa Height, Sheffied Park, Central Avenue and East Crest Drive. When asked about his worst experience, Phan said he saw many people beaten up and hospitalized. “I have seen many, I couldn’t count anymore,” he said. About 10 years from now, Phan said he plans to become an investigator and has enrolled in an online course. Phan loves the color blue and likes travelling. He also watches the news and National Geographic Channel and is devoted to his motorcycle. Phan said the Charlotte community is fully behind the police department.

“Being a cop is not just about dealing with the bad guys who comprise only one or two percent of the population. It’s also about helping the community in many ways,” he said. Phan is married to Thao Ton Nu and they are proud parents to fivemonth-old daughter Tianna Phan. There’s more to learn about him even after I finished my interview and I could only hope that we have more police officers like him who are committed to doing their jobs well and to serving their communities. ■

First work day blues Straight From the Carolinas

by Susan Palmes-Dennis, journalist

W o r k banishes those three great evils: boredom, vice, and poverty. Voltaire. A lot has been happening to me these days that dispel boredom (according to Voltaire) and the need to earn a few more dollars for home. For whatever reason and whatever it's worth, I'm excited to face these challenges. Let me share something with you. It’s been 15 days since I've been cleaning rooms in a hotel and doing errands. It is physically demanding work but I do use my brain since housekeeping also entails some common sense and intelligence. It's actually a part time job and despite the objections of my husband Ronnie, I continue because the hotel is just a two-minute ride from home and I also wanted to experience how to work with the Americans. Besides earning some dollars doesn't hurt. I've never done this much cleaning in my life before. I remember working in the judiciary, teaching, selling insurance and caskets and working in media back home in Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental in northern Mindanao, Philippines. It's really something new for me. At first I thought it was easy because I did clean the family home under my mother's training. Boy, was I wrong. It's not as glamorous as what Jennifer Lopez made it appear in “Maid In Manhattan.” My glorified job description is room attendant/maid. As room attendant/ maid, I'm tasked with cleaning the rooms in the hotel. For brevity I call myself an RA. Thank God for vacuum cleaners, they help make cleaning carpets and floors. I can only shudder when thinking how I'd fare if I only use brooms. Or worse, a toothbrush. I also change bed linens and bathroom towels, take out the trash and clean all bathroom surfaces, including tubs, sinks and showers. Room attendants also dust and polish

furniture and mop dirty floors. They re-stock complimentary toiletries in the bathroom and other hotel provided amenities as well. Room attendants are also responsible for inspecting hotel rooms for safety hazards or broken items and reporting these to maintenance. When I locate lost items, I must report them to a supervisor as well. I can share you a lot of stories about my work experience, just wait in the days ahead. My first day at work after a day’s training was a disaster. Not only did I end the day with my hands red and itchy but my feet and arms weren't moving anymore when I reached home. I slept eight straight hours and when I woke up I didn’t know if it was another work day ahead. Thanks for the alarm that woke me up. I clean 13 rooms for seven hours a day and an additional four rooms when there are walk-in guests. Never mind about how much I receive per hour, that's nott the topic here. With this in mind, I would tell you my experiences in each of the tasks I mentioned in my new blog. At the end of every work day I'm reminded of Zig Ziglar who said that the ”happiest people I know are those who are busy working toward specific objectives. The most bored and miserable people I know are those who are drifting along with no worthwhile objectives in mind.” Before I shared this story with you and other stories in the coming days, I resolved to be kind to all room attendants I come across and make their work a little more bearable by placing all towels, wash cloths, face towels and what not in designated places. I'd also dispose of all used cups, complimentary shampoo, lotion and conditioner bottles in the garbage bin. If I happen to drink some complimentary coffee or tea, I'd make sure to dispose of the plastic cups as well. I'd promise that to myself as well as to you. I would also throw in a few housekeeping tips as well. For now, bye and see you soon. ■

Alexis Riley in Nonoy Zuñiga' Carolina concert by Susan Palmes-Dennis

She was going to sing the “Royals of Lorde” in the Nonoy Zuñiga concert, scheduled on April 19 . I remember she also sang in that Jam Morales concert and she has that rare voice, a distinct sound that you can’t help but fall in love with. She is Alexis Riley, the 14-yerold daughter of Kay RonquilloAntone and Matthew Antone. The mother by the way needs no introduction she is the 2014 second vice president of the Filipino-American Community of the Carolinas (FACC) here at the Carolinas. Alexis is talented but her sweetness and helpful attitude really struck me as rare for young people these days. I saw her again when we had an FACC meeting and she and her sister helped clean the table. Alexis was also in the Hop for Fun last April 5 and she cooked the fries. She had no airs and was a no-frills type of girl. That was something for me to see at this time. But anyway, Alexis Riley has that sunny disposition and her long hair looks good on her. She's on 9th grade at the Butler High school. “I have two dogs that just had five puppies and I also have four gold fish,” Alexis told me. She wants to be a veterinarian when she goes to college. Alexis also loves the color red. I asked her if she would wear red in the Nonoy Zuñiga concert but she said no, she

just liked red. On top of it all, this girl is a major sweetheart. I’m not sure what I love more- the sweet girl or the music she plays out. But either way you should get to know Alexis more. Here are some questions and her answers. Q1 – What are the five things you can’t live without? A- Five things I can't live without would be 1- animals 2music 3- family 4- food 5- the ability to sing. Q 2- What’s your motto or the advice you live by A- The motto I live by would be that if you put your mind to something and keep a positive attitude you will always succeed. Q 3- Ten years from now who will you be? A- Ten years from now I will be a pet groomer with my own business going to veterinarian school to become a veterinarian. Q 4- If I was to turn your iPod right now what five artists/song would I see on your playlists? A- if you were to turn my iPod on you would see artists such as Adele, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson, Billy Joel, John Legend. I like to listen to old or slow songs. Q 4- What is your hobby or passion? A- My favorite hobby is singing. Yes I do see myself singing in the near future, singing is like a hobby to me “Yes I do love what I'm doing right now between singing, school, and playing piano,” Alexis said. She can remember that her childhood was fun, though it was cold because that time she lived in Maine. And she really loves her family. For Alexis Riley, a whole world of possibilities awaits her. ■

Recognizing Dr. Nini as Jackie White with Ken Kong Cambodian Director Founder of Miss Asia Carolinas Southeast Asian Ministries

Dr. Nini given recognition for founding the Miss Asia Carolinas By Susan Palmes-Dennis A SPECIAL recognition award was given to the founder and chairperson of the Miss Asian Carolinas during the 14th Asian Festival in Charlotte, North Carolina, a week ago. Dr. Eumelia “Nini” Bautista de Garcia personally received the award from the publisher of Asian Herald Dr. Ki-Hyun Chun who also founded and organized the first Asian festival fourteen years ago. Chun was assisted by Nimish Bhatt, the president of the Carolinas AsianAmerican Chamber of Commerce (CAACC) and Dr.John Chen of the Carolinas Asian American Chamber of Commerce (CAACC) The Miss Asian Carolinas was founded by Dr. Nini in 2003 and is now called the Miss Asia Carolinas Multi-Cultural Showcase. During the pageant's 11-yearhistory, the Miss Asia title was won by one Korean, one Vietnamese, two Indians and seven Filipinas. A Filipina won the crown last year. There is no Miss Asian Carolinas (MAC) this year since the new team was unable to prepare in time due to other commitments. The previous winners underwent a rigorous three-tiered selection process and were evaluated by a panel of nonAsian judges. Scholarship awards and other prizes were given to the winners. In her response Dr. Nini said thank you in many languages: “Maraming Salamat, Merci Beaucoup,

DamkeSchon, Tsetse, thank you for this beautiful award, I owe it all to the participants of the Miss Asia Carolinas who inspired me and the many volunteers and donors who supported me.” Clad in Filipiniana dress, she also stood with the winners of the after receiving the award. Dr. Nini said it was a “joy and privilege” to provide young Asian American women a venue to shine and be recognized in the Carolinas community.Dr. Nini said the Miss Asia Carolinas is not just a pageant but a multicultural showcase that gives focus on a young Asian American woman's leadership development, cultural advocacy, community service and academic excellence. “We avoid calling it a pageant.”DrNini added. “It's truly brains, beauty and talent,” she said. Dr. Nini said the journey to establishing the Miss Asia Festival cannot be possible without the help of generous volunteers and sponsors. She quoted author Dennis Kimbro who wrote: let others live small lives, but not you, let others argue small stuff, but not you, let others cry over small hurts, but not you, let others leave their future in someone else’s hands but definitely not you, Take charge of your own destiny and happiness.” Dr. Nini then faced the pageant winners on stage and told them “I love being with you and being there for all these 11 years. It is time to move on.” ■

Jackie White, is the producer of Anchor International Mission; recently she interviewed Ken Kong, Director of Southeast Asian Ministries, (including Burma, Cambodia, Thailand, etc...) Feel free to watch on YouTube as Ken shares his heart for the nations & is featured in a very inspirational (Navigators) video. Two million people died in the genocide ( in Cambodia), but God spared Ken & his family's life for HIS Glory! (Cambodia is less than 4%Christian) Here is Ken reflection from a time of lent "Believing in Jesus means that we have been baptized into his death but it doesn’t just sit there. Because Christ has resurrected we too have been resurrected, and it’s not just a simple no power kind of resurrection it’s a resurrection to new life! What is new life? For many Southeast Asians, we know what it means to have a new life. Many of us had to leave our country because of the war that took place between 1975-1980. We’ve seen and experience the stenches of death. We’ve seen the destruction of what death looks like.

My mother has had to say good bye to two of her sons. Both died in her arms. Death was very real to her. Death was something she has had to carry and say good bye to. Having come to America one can say that it is sort of like a new life. Leaving behind the death and pain and moving into an environment where the opportunities are endlesswhere the fear of being taken out and forced to work until your hands can no longer move is far away. This new life, America, isn’t just a place for us to marvel in. It’s a place for us to begin to start working. It’s a place for us to rebuild our lives. Using what we have to serve and love our family and our communities. The bible is clear. We no longer use our bodies for sinful practices but we use it as instruments of righteousness. We use what we have to glorify Him!

During this season of reflection let us not dwell on our past, but think about our future. Let us reflect upon the power of Christ for our resurrection." Ken Kong is on staff with The Navigators serving Director of Southeast Asian Ministries, a Missionary to SouthAsia. He is also the national director for The Southeast Asian Committee www. ■

From the Democratic Women of Mecklenburg County

“The quality of mercy is not strained. It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven Upon the place beneath. It is twice blessed: It blesseth him that gives and him that takes. 'Tis mightiest in the mightiest. It becomes The thronèd monarch better than his crown. His scepter shows the force of temporal power, The attribute to awe and majesty Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings, But mercy is above this sceptered sway. It is enthronèd in the hearts of kings. It is an attribute to God himself. And earthly power doth then show likest God’s When mercy seasons justice." Shakespeare's famous lines about the qualities of mercy and justice have been on my mind lately, no doubt because of the ubiquitous TV ads attacking NC Supreme Court Justice Robin Hudson. These scurrilous ads, fueled by an infusion of $650,000 in cash from a dark-money PAC funded by corporate interests, attack Justice Hudson for taking a stand against retroactive punishment. The Raleigh News & Observer states that Justice Hudson "made her call based on her interpretation of the Constitution, exactly what a justice is supposed to do." The ferocity of the attack on this good woman was a call to action. And like many of you, I felt a duty to answer this call this past Tuesday on primary election day. I spent the day traveling from one polling location to another, putting up signs for Justice Hudson, delivering palm cards and preaching the gospel of

the importance of keeping fair and independent judges on the bench. And I was heartened by what I encountered. Poll greeters working for opposing candidates in the Democratic primary enthusiastically agreed to work together for the cause of justice, and for this particular Justice. I found that people were not misled by these false allegations, and instead were sickened by the false attacks on Justice Hudson. Justice prevailed with Justice Hudson carrying the day with the highest statewide vote total. The attacks on her backfired. But we still have a lot of work to do. Justice Hudson won statewide, but she did not place first in Mecklenburg County. Voter turnout in Mecklenburg for primary day was under 10%, which was well under the 14% voter turnout reported statewide. The same corporate interests who pollute our air and water will be polluting our airwaves again this fall with deceptive advertising. Republicans currently hold power in our state's executive and legislative branches. They are trying to consolidate their power by taking over our judicial system and they will spend vast amounts of money to accomplish their goals. We need to be more organized and more focused in our approach if we are to succeed. We have a lot of work to do. Let's get to work. Doodling Her Way to the Top

It did not take long for Providence Spring Elementary student Hailey Kim to decide how she would change the world. The third-grader recently entered the Doodle 4 Google competition, which challenges K-12 students in U.S. schools to create their own Google doodle. This year’s theme is “If I could invent one thing to make the world a better place …” Hailey chose to doodle a Space Traveling Tunnel that could take her from one country to another in minutes. She is the state winner for the Google competition. “I want to see many things and family on the other side of the Earth,” said Hailey. “By inventing a space tunnel to travel quickly, many people can meet, talk, love and touch face to face.” On April 29, Google representatives (known as Googlers) visited Providence Spring to announce Hailey as North Carolina’s winner. According to the Googlers, Hailey beat thousands of doodle hopefuls. Only 50 students from the U.S. are chosen for the honor. Until May 9, viewers cast votes on the Doodle 4 Google page. The student with the most votes will win the national contest. The results of the voting come out June 9. Winners receive a $30,000 college scholarship and a $50,000 education technology grant for her school. The winning animated doodle

will also be displayed on the Google homepage. “Once a year, we hand over a paintbrush to give students a chance to be Doodlers for Google,” said Googler Alanna Mobley. “We ask that students think big, think crazy and think about an idea that will help change the world.” Hailey said her travels to Korea led to her inspiration. She said it usually takes about 14 to 15 hours to get there and she wanted to get there faster than air travel. “I want to be able to connect to the world,” said Hailey. During Tuesday’s celebration, Principal Diane Adams encouraged her students to excel in whatever they choose in life. “If you do the bare minimum, you will get the bare minimum,” said Adams. “You have to use your talents to make the world a better place. It starts with an idea.” On May 21, the 50 state winners will travel to Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, California, for the final awards celebration and the announcement of the national winner. “I faced challenges when drawing the details of my doodle, especially the tunnel,” said Hailey. “But I am determined to win.” You can see Hailey Kim's doodle at Her work is displayed in the K-3 category.

YG-1 USA announced today that it is establishing a technical center and manufacturing facility in Charlotte. The facility, which will be the first of its kind for the South Korean company, will serve as a hub for the research, development, engineering and training of leading technologies in the cutting tool industry. High performance custom cutting tool solutions for the aerospace, medical and power generation industries will also be manufactured at the site located at 11001 Park Charlotte Blvd. “We chose Charlotte because of its optimistic growth and bright future business outlook both domestically and internationally. This makes Charlotte an ideal location for recruiting, retaining and discovering needed talent in our highly competitive sector,” said H.K. Song, chairman and president of YG-1 Korea. YG-1 USA expects to hire at least 53 skilled and professional employees within the next three years and the average annual salary will likely exceed $59,831, plus benefits. Total investment in the project is valued at $13,800,000. Its parent company, YG-1, was founded in 1981 and is headquartered in Seoul, South Korea. It is among the top five manufacturers of cutting tools in the world, with more than 5,000 employees across the globe that make it possible to export its products to 75 countries. “This is a great opportunity for the

city, county and region to continue to build on its international advanced manufacturing presence. We welcome YG-1 USA to the Queen City and look forward to a long and prosperous relationship as the company grows its business here,” said Bob Morgan, president and CEO of the Charlotte Chamber. “Charlotte is a location that not only brings distinct advantages to the YG-1 organization, but also offers our associates the quality of life we desire for each of them. Combining all of these advantages, with the benefits of lower business costs, convenient direct international and domestic transportation connections, and the proximity to a majority of our major U.S. markets, made Charlotte the ideal location for our U.S.-based technical center,” added Song. The project was made possible in part by awards from the One North Carolina Fund and CharlotteMecklenburg Business Investment Program (BIP). The Charlotte Chamber would like to thank the N.C. Department of Commerce, the City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, Central Piedmont Community College and Duke Energy for their support on the project. Mark J. Mayfield with Sperry Van Ness represented YG-1 USA on their site selection. Jon R. Jordan with Robinson, Bradshaw & Hinson, P.A. represented YG-1 USA in connection with the state and local incentives process.■

The Fil-American booth as set up by the FilAmerican Community of the Carolinas (FACC) also showcased necklaces made of sea shells and other local materials and national wear like barong Tagalog and sequined kimono for women. The female visitors also found and bought the native “bakya” or wooden sandals with matching crocket for straps. There were also big fans made of banahaw leaves that were used by Filipinos to cool themselves in humid weather. Outside the booth were posters and streamers showing Philippine facts and figures that were read by young Fil-Americans. The Philippines, officially called the Republic of the Philippines, is an archipelago of 7,107 islands in the Pacific Ocean. Clad in neon green kimono and matching local skirt, FACC president Malette Aquino-Oliveros manned the boothalong with FACC secretary Lota Mascarenas to entertain visitors. The event’s MC Warren Chu did a great job, and kept the day’s activities and performance to a smooth flow. To all organizers, a big set of applause, and hat-off.

The Asian Herald 2014

Camp for Minister's Restoration

A Religious History of the American People
