Welcome to Japan Welcome to Japan ‘The Land of the Rising Sun’ is a mystical landscape; where centuries-old castles watch over the peaceful gardens of Kyoto; where Geisha’s slip through the cobblestoned alleyways of the Gion District, and cherry blossoms blanket streets across the nation. Remarkably, such beauty co-exists effortlessly with the flashing neon lights of Tokyo and Osaka, and the throngs of fashionable locals strolling beneath futuristic urban architecture. With iconic images present around every corner, Japan delivers the experience of fantasy. Admire the imposing presence of Mt Fuji, ski the famous powder of Hokkaido, sink into an outdoor onsen or catch a traditional Sumo Wrestling tournament before unwinding with a quiet sake, a flavoursome donburi, and some karaoke. An enriching experience, Japan has an infectious spirit and captivates visitors the world over with its beauty, culture and amazing hospitality. Facts Japan is situated in northeastern Asia between the North Pacific and the Sea of Japan. It consists of four major islands; Honshu, Kyushu, Shikoku and Hokkaido, and is surrounded by roughly 4,000 smaller islands. Its combined population is currently around 126 million. Climate A long country, Japan has a wide climate variation from north to south. Winter is generally December to February, with temperatures getting cooler the further north you go. Spring is from March to May and autumn from September to November, both seasons are relatively mild. Summer is from June to

Japan Must-See Areas Tokyo The nations’ capital with a population of 13 million, Tokyo is the political, economic and cultural centre of Japan. A city of contrasts, Tokyo features towering skyscrapers along with traditional streets, tranquil gardens and spiritual temples.

Mt Fuji (Hakone) At 3776 meters high, Mt Fuji is the tallest mountain in Japan, located on the border of Shizuoka and Yamanashi. With its iconic cone shape and imposing presence, Mt Fuji has become a world famous symbol of Japan.

Kyoto One of Japan’s ancient capitals, Kyoto is overflowing with UNESCO World Heritage listed sights and is home to a wealth of elaborate temples, shrines and gardens dating back over one thousand years.

Niseko Located in south-western Hokkaido, the alpine region of Niseko is dominated by Mt Yotei and Mt Annupuri and has earned a reputation as one of the world’s leading ski resorts.

Hiroshima Known as the first city devastated by an atomic bomb during World War II, Hiroshima represents a tribute to the tragic event and is home to the Peace Memorial Park. The Red Torii Gate of Itsukushima Shrine is also a highlight offering stunning views.

Nikko Famous for Futara-san-jinja Shrine, Toshogu Shrine and Rin-no-ji Temple, Nikko has become known as the temple town. The city forms a part of Nikko National Park and features NikkoSuginamiki-Kaido, a beautiful cedar-lined road.

Osaka Japan’s third largest city, Osaka is perhaps the cultural capital of Japan with distinctive performing arts scene and unique food culture.

Nara With countless shrines, temples and museums paying tribute to its 1300 year history, Nara offers an interesting insight into the traditions of Japanese culture.

Rail Passes Who is eligible for a Japan Rail Pass? The JAPAN RAIL PASS is a special ticket available only to travellers visiting Japan from foreign countries for sight-seeing. To be eligible to purchase a JAPAN RAIL PASS you must meet the following condition. You are a foreign tourist visiting Japan from abroad for sightseeing, under the entry status of “temporary visitor.” “Temporary Visitor” entry status, according to Japanese Immigration Law, allows a stay in Japan of 15 days or 90 days for “sight-seeing, etc.” If you apply for a “stay for sight-seeing” when you enter Japan, entry personnel will stamp your passport as “Temporary Visitor,” as shown below. Only persons who have a passport bearing this stamp can use a JAPAN RAIL PASS. Caution: If you visit Japan with an Exchange Order (H.I.S. Exchange Order) to be exchanged in for a JAPAN RAIL PASS, the exchange cannot be made unless they have “temporary visitor” status: to enter Japan under any other official status, such as “trainee” or “entertainer” will make the pass invalid. Please note that according to strict interpretation of the Japanese Immigration Law, “temporary visitor” status differs even from other types of stays that are also for only short time periods.

Tokyo The nations’ capital is a vast spread of unique and lively districts, each one distinctively Japanese. A hub for shopping and dining, Tokyo is famed for the huge department stores of Ginza and the fashionable retail district Harajuku, as well as the dining and nightlife hotspots of Shinjuku and Roppongi. History and some welcome serenity can be found within the gardens of the Imperial Palace, or the Meiji Shrine; while beyond the garden walls the future awaits, with ultra-modern skyscrapers, stores of hi-tech gadgets and museums of modern art. Well prepared visitors may be lucky enough to view a sumo wrestling tournament at Kokugikan, or simply sit beneath the springtime cherry blossoms at Showa Kinen Park. For most however, the thrill of Tokyo is simply getting lost within the urban masses, taking in the colourful neon lights, and people watching.
