JAPAN MUST-SEE AREAS

TOKYO The nations’ capital with a population of 13 million, Tokyo is the political, economic and cultural centre of Japan. A city of contrasts, Tokyo features towering skyscrapers along with traditional streets, tranquil gardens and spiritual temples.

TAKAYAMA Often referred to as “Little Kyoto” Takayama is a city in Japan’s mountainous Gifu Prefecture. The narrow streets of its Sanmachi Suji historic district are lined with wooden merchants’ houses dating to the Edo Period, along with many small museums.

8

MT FUJI (HAKONE)

KYOTO

At 3776 meters high, Mt Fuji is the tallest mountain in Japan, located on the border of Shizuoka and Yamanashi. With its iconic cone shape and imposing presence, Mt Fuji has become a world famous symbol of Japan.

One of Japan’s ancient capitals, Kyoto is overflowing with UNESCO World Heritage listed sights and is home to a wealth of elaborate temples, shrines and gardens dating back over one thousand years.

KANAZAWA Kanazawa is the capital of Ishikawa Prefecture, on Japan’s central Honshu, known for its well-preserved Edo Period districts, art museums and regional handicrafts.

NIKKO

NARA

Famous for Futara-san-jinja Shrine, Toshogu Shrine and Rin-no-ji Temple, Nikko has become known as the temple town. The city forms a part of Nikko National Park and features Nikko- Suginamiki-Kaido, a beautiful cedar-lined road.

With countless shrines, temples and museums paying tribute to its 1300 year history, Nara offers an interesting insight into the traditions of Japanese culture.

JAPAN MUST-SEE AREAS

HIROSHIMA Known as the first city devastated by an atomic bomb during World War II, Hiroshima represents a tribute to the tragic event and is home to the Peace Memorial Park. The Red Torii Gate of Itsukushima Shrine is also a highlight offering stunning views.

TOKYO The nations’ capital is a vast spread of unique and lively districts, each one distinctively Japanese. A hub for shopping and dining, Tokyo is famed for the huge department stores of Ginza and the fashionable retail district Harajuku, as well as the dining and nightlife hotspots of Shinjuku and Roppongi. History and some welcome serenity can be found within the gardens of the Imperial Palace, or the Meiji Shrine; while beyond the garden walls the future awaits, with ultra-modern skyscrapers, stores of hi-tech gadgets and museums of modern art. Well prepared visitors may be lucky enough to view a sumo wrestling tournament at Kokugikan, or simply sit beneath the springtime cherry blossoms at Showa Kinen Park. For most however, the thrill of Tokyo is simply getting lost within the urban masses, taking in the colourful neon lights, and people watching.

TRANSFERS Tokyo’s city centre is located approximately one hour by Narita Express from Narita International Airport. Asia Escape Holidays recommends travellers in Tokyo utilise Japan’s reliable and convenient public transport system which is clearly marked and easy to navigate. AIRPORT LIMOUSINE BUS: One Way Price: from $50pp Efficient service provided from Narita Airport to various destinations in Tokyo. Tickets can be purchased at Airport Limousine counters located in all terminals. For passengers travelling with large quantities of luggage this is a convenient option as some services will transport you direct to your hotel. Please check with your travel agent to ensure the Airport Limousine stops at your hotel or close by. The services runs multiple times per hour. Approx 90 min to Shinjuku. Asia Escape Holidays recommends the airport limo bus if you are staying in Tokyo.

RAPID TRAIN: Travels from Narita Airport to Tokyo via the Narita Express in under one hour, stopping at all major stations. The Narita Express is one level down from the Arrivals Hall at Narita Airport, simply follow the signs or ask for directions. Approx 45 min one way. Once you arrive at the major station nearest your hotel, take the exit directing you to the taxis. Taxis are readily available and moderately priced. The drivers are very friendly and generally speak or understand English in the major centres. If you are staying outside of Tokyo and need to connect to one of the shinkansen networks then the Narita Express is the best option, as it finalises at Tokyo station where a lot of the shinkansen services pass through or commence from.
