CADRE INTERNATIONAL TOD CENTRE A Fully Integrated Transportation Interchange and Mixed Use Development
CADRE INTERNATIONAL TOD CENTRE
Atkins architectural experience in large Mixed-Use projects and complex Transport buildings makes it uniquely suited to the emerging trend to integrate these two building types together. Transport Orientated Development (TOD) is an important new building type in both China and South East Asia.
Cadre International TOD Centre is one example of this transformational new building type. In urban and transport integration terms, it brings together places for people to work and live with East Guangzhou’s important transport hub. This project evolves a sustainable model of high density mixed-use development that Atkins have always promoted. It will be China’s first fully integrated Transport Orientated Development (TOD) project, keeping Atkins at the forefront of TOD design in China.
What is
Transport Orientated Design (TOD)? TOD is the development of commercial business inside and around transportation hubs, such that they both are mutually beneficial, and as such create an economically sustainable model.

TRANSPORTATION HUB The transportation hub itself includes the elevated intercity railway station that dramatically punches through the podium of the development, an underground high-capacity metro interchange station and a bus and taxi interchange located at ground level. These three transportation facilities are interconnected via the podium that consists of six levels of retail mall above ground and two levels of retail mall below ground.

TOD CONCEPT The design maximises the number of retail floors activated by TOD connections by: 1. Routing Metro passengers through Basement 2 and then up through Basement 1. 2. Integrating retail with Intercity Station arrivals. 3. Connecting to the High Speed Railway Station via Bridges at Level 3. 4. Connecting to neighbouring plots via bridges at Level 2 and Level 3. 5. Connecting to the two towers.

TOWERS Two tall towers are located on the east and west sides of the podium. The larger 260 metre high tower accommodates a five star hotel, grade A office and SOHO residential apartments. The shorter 182 metre high tower accommodates SOHO residential apartments.
The powerful forms of the towers create a welcoming gateway to visitors. The smooth rock strata-like facades give Cadre International TOD Centre a timeless quality, while the dynamic curves of the podium creates a visual interest and movement that represent the modes of transport that interconnect on the site.

NORTH FACADE The other main feature of the north faรงade is the large and dramatic canopy that stretches over the intercity station platforms and the pedestrian bridge links to the neighboring high speed rail station. It too will be clad externally and internally with materials to match the podium and towers.
FACADES INSPIRED BY ROCK STRATA The unified form of the two towers and podium makes the whole development a singular form. The overall dramatic composition of the building and the horizontal banding of the facades are designed to make the development an iconic form to be seen from afar. The elevations consist of alternating bands of glass and solid panels. The glass bands will be constructed from semi-reflective double glazed panels. The colour and high performance coatings on the glass will be carefully chosen in terms of visual appearance but also in terms of performance to minimise solar gain and to maximise internal day lighting. The horizontal solid bands will be constructed from silver colour aluminium panels. A smooth and flush aesthetic for the cladding has been chosen to make the building seem like a single smooth polished stone form.
Outside the development are large areas of public space, including a civic plaza at the north-east of the site and green garden areas on the south and west of the site that will ensure this landmark project fits well into its context and greatly benefits the surroundings.

LED LIGHTING It is proposed that LED lighting will be integrated into horizontal bands to emphasize the banded appearance of the building at night. Further large areas of LED signage and advertisements are located on the north-east and north-west corners.

SHOPPING MALL The upper levels of the shopping mall do not have any direct connections to the transportation facilities, but have their own attractions including a multiplex cinema, a food court and large public roof garden surrounded by cafes and restaurants that will draw visitors to these upper levels.
