I

do love this time of year mostly because of the wonderful spring sunshine and all the new buds promising a colourful start to the gardening year and probably because my birthday happens to fall in March! It’s so nice to finally go outside with a cup of coffee and enjoy the warm spring sunshine. I don’t think we’ve had a particularly difficult winter, certainly not as bad as predicted back in October, but I do welcome the warmer weather and spending more time in the open air. I am delighted to say that the Vision 2010 project at the Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall has borne fruit with the opening of a new bar and the Ralli Room. These two refurbished areas were officially opened by the Rt Hon Chris Grayling MP in early March and you can read more on page 22. Mole Valley District Council continues its crackdown on benefits cheats and cites two recent cases on page 24. One of my pet hates are these cheats who do nothing to contribute to society but, instead, just expect the government to provide, diverting much needed funds from worthy individuals and families who are down on their luck and genuinely need help. More power to the council’s elbow I say. Just in case you haven’t heard, our area is due to become ‘digital’ in two phases, on Wednesday 4th and Wednesday 18th April, which means that we will no longer be able to receive an analogue signal through our televisions. We need to re-tune our TV's on both these dates and this Advertising isn’t as complicated as it sounds, details of how to do The Ashtead & Leatherhead Local this can be found on page 28. It has just been announced that from 5th April, Sutton & East Surrey Water (along with six other English water companies) will be introducing a hosepipe and sprinkler ban for domestic customers due to two dry winters in a Technical & Legal stuff row. Easter Sunday falls on 8th April this year and obviously I shall be eating my own body weight in chocolate eggs, which are not fattening at all because they have a large volume of air in the middle. In any case, it would be, of course, untraditional not to indulge and I am a stickler for tradition. However you celebrate Easter, I do hope No part of this magazine may be that you have a good break over the four days.
