New Bar and Ralli Room in Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall officially opened On Saturday 3rd March Chris Grayling MP joined Roy Guy and the trustees of Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall in celebrating the official opening of the new bar and Ralli room. This was the culmination of several years of fund raising and planning to complete their Vision 2010 Project. The hall – known as WAM ‘Where Ashtead Meets’ – is in use by a wide variety of community groups and people of all ages and from all walks of life. Money for the project had come from a range of sources including Bewley Homes, Leatherhead Trust, Surrey County Council, Mole Valley District Council, Lord Barnby Foundation, the friends of Ashtead Village hall and many private donors both large and small contributing to the “buy a brick “scheme. The names are recorded in the Roll of Honour displayed in the hall. The donors were invited to the opening ceremony along with local councillors and dignitaries and representatives of the regular users of the hall. The opening ceremony began outside the new doors (donated by the friends of the hall) where Chris Grayling and Roy Guy together cut a ribbon and welcomed guests into the building. In the bar a second ceremony took place where a plaque was unveiled which speaks of turning Vision into reality. The final part of the ceremony was held in the new Ralli room where Roy Guy spoke to everyone about Vision 2010 and thanked all those involved. This was followed by Chris Grayling affirming the value of the local community working together to such a great benefit for all. There was a photographic display in the Marshall room and guests were encouraged by the present chairman of Trustees – Jane Hiley – to consider the next steps. These include an “Access for all” project to provide a new sound system throughout the building and to remove an old brick store outside to make a safe play space for young children. Like handing on the Olympic flame the Trustees hand on the hall to the next generation to be kept in good order for years to come.
