Back to the 60’s...

Staff, residents & families enjoyed dancing to the sounds of the 60s provided by Ben Heenan from Junction. As you can see from the photos, great fun was had by everyone & all our residents loved getting the chance to have a boogie with their friends and family. Big thanks to Joan Horton for running a card stall to help raise funds for the residents fund and to Ethan (Rose’s Grandson) for running the cake stall. Also thanks to Joy & Wendy for providing the delicious buffet. Final thanks to everyone who supported us.

Entertainment Aplenty! We’ve been busy being entertained this month with singers Colin Jackson, Katie Rebecca Razzle Dazzle and John Drinkall giving us all a good old singalong and dance. We’ve also been pampered by Philipa Parker and a screening of ‘Annie, Get your Gun!’ by the travelling cinema. We’ve had so much going on, the month has flown by!

Friday 18th April Easter Celebrations All Day We have Tickle the Pony from the Phoenix Foundation visiting our residents & entertainment at 2pm with Frankie Fortune followed by Afternoon Tea. Everyone is welcome so come along & join the fun. The Chocolate Raffle will also be drawn that afternoon. Thank you to everyone who has donated chocolate but please keep bringing in those Easter Eggs, we need more!

Congrats Sam!

Dignity Plants Our Dignity Day Seedlings have come on great guns. Marion & Jean helped to plant them one afternoon, we are looking forward to planting them out in the garden soon.

Pennies for Heroes Congratulations to Sam on the birth of her beautiful baby boy, Theo. Both came to visit us one afternoon this month. Everyone was cooing over him, he’s absolutely gorgeous!

The ‘Pennies for Heroes’ campaign is going strong and we have handed in 3 full jam jars to the local newspaper. Well Done everyone! Let’s keep on filling those jars and remember, more of our heroes from the ‘Great War!’

A huge thank you to Hannah who has been a wonderful Activities Coordinator at The Firs over the last few months. Hannah will be taking on the new role of Dementia Assistant in the Extra Care Unit next month. Our new Activities Coordinator, Abbie will be starting on 14th April!

Upcoming Events Sunday 30th March Mother’s Day Tea 4.00 - 6.00pm Everyone is welcome to join us to celebrate Mother’s on Mothering Sunday especially those who have a mother or grandmother at The Firs. Tuesday 8th April Razzle Dazzle 2.00pm Everyone is welcome to join us to be entertained by the wonderful Razzle Dazzle. They always get our residents up dancing & singing along.

Residents had a fantastic afternoon being entertained by Sarah & Claire from Razzle Dazzle especially Annie who got up dancing with them. They will be returning at regular intervals throughout the year. They will be back again on 8th April.

Kathleen, Eileen and Jane enjoyed going out for the day shopping in the Westfield Centre and visiting Little Eaton Garden Centre. Jane bought a lovely new outfit which she wore for the 60s Party. Thank you to Alan for driving the bus and to Pam Wood and Andrea Starbuck for helping making the trip worthwhile. We can’t wait to go out again very soon with summer on its way!

Colin Jackson entertains

We had a brand new entertainer, Colin Jackson visit Kidsley Grange this month. One of our residents, Irene loved singing on the microphone with Colin. She was a bigger star than Colin. Irene was overwhelmed at the applause she recieved afterwards. We look forward to having Colin visit us again very soon!

Tuesday 22nd April Mertyl’s 90th Birthday Party To celebrate Mertyl’s very special day, we’ll have the Owl Experience & a buffet tea party. Thursday 15th May End of Life Meeting 6.00pm All are welcome to discuss any issues. Jane Carr will also be at the home to answer any questions you may have.

Living Eggs Kidsley are having our own incubated chicks delivered on Monday 14th April. We are all looking forward to seeing them hatch, hopefully ready for our Easter Fete and the Easter weekend. Our residents can’t wait to have lots of cuddles with the chicks!

What we’ve been up to... Residents have enjoyed regular baking sessions. Residents are looking forward to Lindsay from B-Unique coming back from Maternity Leave for their regular exercise sessions. All female residents will be receiving a tulip bouquet specially delivered for Mothering Sunday. Residents are also looking forward to their boat trip on the River Trent on 26th June!

King William’s Hair Salon

On Thursday 6th March, King William’s brand new hair salon opened. Residents enjoyed getting together and having a glass of bucks fizz and nibbles whilst having their hair done. One resident enjoyed it so much that she decided to go back up for seconds. Everyone is chuffed with the new salon & have been showing it off to their friends & family.

Friday 18th April Easter Fete 2.00pm We’d like to invite everyone to our wonderful Easter Fete on Good Friday. We’ve got lots happening including an Egg Hunt, Raffle, Lucky Dip, Win the Hamper, Cake Sale, Guess how many mini eggs in the jar, name the Easter bunny and lots more. We’ll also be selling Hot Cross Buns with Hot Drinks. All money raised goes towards our Residents Fund so please join us for an afternoon of Easter Fun.

St Patrick’s Day

We celebrated St Patrick’s Day with a hunt to find 10 hidden 4 leafed clovers & we sang some Irish songs too. We had a lovely day!

Sunday 20th April Easter Extravaganza 10.00am - 3.00pm Everyone is welcome to join us for our Easter Extravaganza. We’ll have an Easter Bonnet Competition, a Cake Stall, Raffle, Craft Stall & also, ‘Smalley Hall’s got Easter Talent’ where our residents will be showing off their talents at 1.30pm. Thursday 3rd April Aldercar Beauty College 10.00am We’ll have the students from Aldercar Beauty School visiting to pamper our residents with hand massage and manicure.

Razzle Dazzle Razzle Dazzle will be entertaining our staff & residents with their Musicals Show in April. All are welcome to join us to come along for a sing & a boogie!

Frankie Fortune

We had a wonderful time with Frankie Fortune. Frankie entertained our residents with a puppet show, magic as well as a few songs! A few of our ladies even got up for a dance.

Garden Centre Visit We enjoyed a lovely trip out to Trowell Garden Centre. We enjoyed a wonderful lunch with sandwiches & scones & looked at all the Easter displays & beautiful flowers ready for Spring.

talk on food and all the old grocery shops in Matlock and Bakewell. Audrey, Dosh, Sadie, Dorothy & Jill remembered all the shops and we all enjoyed a good discussion on the way we used to cook our dinners. Thank you very much for coming Cara, we hope to see you again very soon.

Lunch Club

Our Lunch Club has been a great success, some of our members have commented how it has transformed their lives. Our residents get on really well with our lunch club members. We all play Bingo together and have some quizzes. Its great fun.

Singing for the Brain We have attended ‘Singing for the Brain’ in Ilkeston and Quarndon this month. The sessions are offered by the Alzheimer’s Society as they believe that singing is therapeutic for those with Dementia. Our residents absolutely love the sessions & you can normally hear them singing at the top of their voices. Everyone at the sessions are so friendly & they’ve made lots of friends going every month. We can’t wait to go again next month!

Upcoming Events Friday 28th March Katie Rebecca 2.00pm Everyone is welcome to join us for entertainment from Katie Rebecca. Katie has become a very popular entertainer in all of our homes. All our residents love to have a sing along & a dance to her music.

Bistro Night

We held our Irish Bistro Night and our first quiz. The families really enjoyed the change. One of our residents, May Perriman won the bottle of wine. We look forward to having our next Bistro Night very soon. Look out for posters!

Fish & Chips

Our residents had a lovely treat this month, dinner from the local chippy. Everyone really enjoyed their fish & chips & it started some reminiscence off about their favourite meals.

Extra Care Unit Update A few months ago, our Dementia Manager, Kate asked residents, staff and relatives to come up with a name for our three Extra Care Units at The Firs, Valley Lodge and West Hallam. We’re pleased to announce that our Extra Care Units will be renamed the ‘Forget Me Not’ Wing after a number of people suggested the name. To pick a winner, Kate will be putting all the names who suggested ‘Forget me not’ and picking one out at random. We would like to invite you all to our official renaming party at our homes, we’ll be having a buffet and drinks to celebrate: Monday 6th April, 6.00pm - Valley Lodge Wednesday 9th April, 6.00pm - West Hallam Thursday 10th April, 6.00pm - The Firs All are welcome to join us!
