Smalley Hallâ€™s Bistro Night!

For our Christmas Bistro Night on Friday 20th December, we had a luxurious 3 course Christmas meal with entertainment from Colin Jackson and a few games of bingo as well as a raffle. The tables were beautifully decorated with Christmas centrepieces, crackers and party hats for all.
Thank you to everyone who made it such a special night. Everyone was soon up and dancing the night away to Colin Jackson and his music. It was definitely a memorable Christmas event for all.
We had a wonderful 32 diners, the most yet! It was a fabulous night and everyone had a great time. A lovely opportunity to share food and a good time with loved ones. All our residents look forward to our Bistro Nights, they like to do their hair, put on some make up and put their posh frocks on! The gents put on their best shirt and favourite aftershave and then come down transformed to the dining room for the event. It truly is a wonderful experience. Razzle Dazzle Visit
We had another wonderful visit from one of our favourite entertainers, Razzle Dazzle. Everyone was soon singing along to all their songs including the ‘Lambeth Walk’ & ‘Supercalafragalisticexpialadoshus.‘ Many of the residents even had a go at singing into the microphone. We can’t wait to have them back again!
We would like to give our best wishes to Sam Meakin who is going on Maternity Leave this month. Good Luck Sam! We can’t wait to see the arrival of your baby boy.
Saturday 1st February Dignity Coffee Morning 10.00am We will be having a Coffee Morning for National Dignity Awareness in Care Day. We will also be sowing the seeds for dignity so come along & help us set the flower seeds ready for our garden in summer and help us promote Dignity in Care.

Friday 14th February Residents & Relatives Meeting 10.30am Another date for your diary, as well as it being Valentine’s Day, we will be having a Residents & Relatives Meeting. All welcome to come along! Thursday 20th February Kevin & Marie 2.00pm Another favourite of the residents, Kevin & Marie will be entertaining us with a belated Valentines’ Love Songs show. Everyone is welcome!
The Travelling Cinema
We’ve had another wonderful visit from the ‘Travelling Cinema’ showing ‘Its a Wonderful Life’ with James Stuart in full colour. We all enjoyed the film as well as the sweets and popcorn.
What We’ve Been Up to... We’ve been keeping the January blues at bay by keeping busy with games of bingo & dominoes and arts and crafts. We’ve also had entertainment from the wonderful Colin Jackson.

Entertainment at The Firs On Tuesday 14th January, Dr Mark Edworthy, a good old times Keyboardist did a performance for the residents. They joined in singing and tapping to the music. When asked for a review, all the residents were really pleased and said how much they enjoyed it.

Great Firs Bake Off
Senior Carer, Dawn Burgess kindly decided to make a cake for our residents however, it was a bit of a failure! We doubt weâ€™ll be seeing her on the Great Briitsh Bake Off any time soon. Keep to the day job Dawn!
Reminiscence Residents made reminiscing hands using pastel colours and writing what their hands have done over time eg. held their childrenâ€™s hands, represents marriage. Everyone really enjoyed it and it brought back a lot of memories.

Kidsley really enjoyed a visit from Tickles, the little Shetland Pony. Residents loved petting him and walking with the pony. It brought back lots of childhood memories. Mary remembers her dad buying her one when she was younger and Cyril now wants to go to a race course on a trip, we will surely be having them visit again. All residents were able to see the pony even those upstairs as Tickles was trained to go in lifts, it was a treat for all and everyone loved it.
Flower Arranging Residents enjoyed a session with Hortihealth UK, Flower Arranging some table centre pieces to use for Christmas Day. They look beautiful & recieved lots of compliments!
Christmas Trip Residents enjoyed a Christmas trip to our local church. There was singing, comedy acts, carol singing and a lovely buffet tea. Les, Bill and Gwen really enjoyed it and were very full. It certainly put us all in the festive spirit. Thank you very much to the local church for having us!

We started a new 500 piece puzzle after completing our 250 piece. Well Done to Joan Summers, Maisie Birkin, Neil Bond, Evelyn Slack and our staff member, Stacey Smith for helping to complete it.
We had another wonderful visit from the Touring Local Cinema who showed ‘Seven Brides for Seven Brother.’ Everyone really enjoyed the film as well as the Pick & Mix and Popcorn that was available. It felt like we’d gone back in time!

Christmas Day at Smalley

Trips to Broomfield Weâ€™ve had two wonderful visits to Broomfield College. Our first was shared with Kidsley Grange where we enjoyed a cuppa and a slice of cake. The cafe was lovely and the staff were very helpful. They have full disabled facilities and invited us back the following week after adapting their menu to suit us. A week later, we went back with West Hallam and Kidsley Grange. Everyone was treated to a 3 course meal, all home cooked. It was lovely! Family and friends also joined us and enjoyed their lunch too. Weâ€™re looking forward to visiting again soon!

On Christmas Day, the residents had a surprise visit from Father Christmas in the morning to deliver all their gifts. For their Christmas meal, they ate a traditional Christmas dinner with all the trimmings and spent the day with loved ones enjoying the festivities and chocolates. Everyone had a wonderful Christmas and were disappointed it was over so quickly.
Singer, Keyboard Player and Quiz Master, Alison Moss came to entertain us this morning and she was very good. The residents loved her and the Quiz was a nice change to the usual entertainment we get. Gwen even won a prize which she was thrilled about.
Australia Day We had a wonderful day this month to celebrate Australia Day. We talked all about Australia, its culture, what they eat, famous Australians. We also watched some Australian TV and listened to some Australian Music. We also had an Australian Taster Session where we ate Anzac biscuits, Lamingtons, Vegimite, Pavlova and Red and White Wine! Residents really enjoyed making the Lambingtons too.

Our Christmas at Valley Lodge has been a busy one with plenty of festive events taking place. To start Christmas off, we had St Peter’s and Paul’s School coming along to sing some lovely carols which the residents really enjoy. We also had a visit from the local Church to do a special Carol Service for us with all the well known Christmas Carols for everyone to sing along to. Afterwards. Monty asked to have a photo taken with all the staff by our Christmas Tree. I’m sure you’ll all agree, its a lovely photo.
Upcoming Events Friday 31st January Dignity Cafe Day 10.00am - 4.00pm We are holding a Cafe Day for our Dignity Action Weekend. Everyone welcome to join us and try Audrey’s wonderful cakes. Saturday 1st February Dignity Action Day 10.00am - 4.00pm We’ll be enjoying a Chinese Takeaway to celebrate Chinese New Year and Dignity Day. We’ll also have John Drinkall coming to entertain all at 2.00pm Thursday 13th February Valentine’s Party 2.00pm Everyone is welcome to join us. Our residents are busy making decorations for our Valentine’s Party.
Razzle Dazzle visited us to perform their wonderful Christmas show. Everyone was singing and clapping along, even Father Christmas turned up to sing and dance. Another wonderful visit was from Darley Dale Brass Band come and play lots of wonderful Christmas Carols. This was a great hit with everyone and we shall be having them back very soon.
Our Christmas Party was fantastic with staff having their own dressing up competition. Our residents judged the competition and voted Denise dressed as Minnie Mouse as the winner. She won a £10 prize for her efforts. Thank you to everyone who made our Christmas such a wonderful time!

Friday 31st January Chinese New Year We’ll be celebrating Chinese New Year where residents will enjoy chinese snacks with their morning tea & coffees. Our residents have also enjoyed making decorations for our home to celebrate the occasion.
We were really pleased to have ‘Pensioners with Style’ visit us for a shopping party. All the residents really enjoyed looking through all the clothes and accessories in the comfort and warmth of their own home, some even treated themselves to a few brand new items. We look forward to another visit in a few months time
Singing for the Brain We had a lovely trip out this month with Smalley Hall & Kidsley Grange enjoying a bite to eat at Broomfield College. They made us feel very welcome and the food was delicious. After a lovely lunch, we jumped back on the minibus to Singing for the Brain in Quarndon where we had a wonderful time as usual. Singing for the Brain is enjoyed by all our residents and its lovely to see them come alive when their singing along to songs they haven’t heard for year.
We held our first Bistro Night of the year, the theme was ‘Best of British’ which everyone enjoyed. It was lovely to see so many residents & relatives enjoying dinner together. We look forward to our next Bistro Night very soon.

Congratulations Wendy! In our monthly Staff Newsletter, Mandy, our Training Manager asked staff to name the new Training Centre at Smalley Hall. Wendy Heenan at The Firs came up with the winning choice being ‘Smalley’s Hall of Achievement’ which everyone in Head Office thought was brilliant! David Poxton, partner of Ashmere, decided to surprise Wendy during a training session to award her as well as thank her with a £20 voucher for her to spend in various High Street shops.
