HELLO, THERE. My love affair with handmade items goes way, way back to when I was a tiny tot living in north Texas. For some reason, there was one particular year that I became obsessed with learning how to write in cursive. I would ask my mom to write my signature every single day so that I could practice my own distinct style. It didn’t matter that I was only three years old or that I hadn’t even learned to write my name well- I was in awe of a cursive signature, and the idea of creating something with my hands felt like a natural extension of myself. Learning how to write cursive turned into drawing, which turned into painting, découpage, sewing, paper cutting, and eventually designing. Throughout all of these artistic transformations, one thing remained constant: creating with my hands. If I am ever lost, confused, frustrated, or at my wit’s end with a design, I turn to them. They usually lead me in the right direction.

2 THE SPACE TRILOGY A novel trio by C.S. Lewis The Space Trilogy contains three novels written by C.S. Lewis: Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength. This book trio follows Dr. Ransom on a journey from Mars to Venus and then back to Earth...all the while fighting the forces of evil and discovering the universe. The entire collection is for young adults who enjoy reading fantasies, as well as adults who want a trip back to the age of sci-fi with one of their favorite writers. The Space Trilogy is packed full of surprising twists and turns, so I chose to keep the book covers ominous and murky in tone. Acrylic paint and sponges were used to create textures that were transformed into mysterious galaxies and asteroids. I chose LillyPad as the typeface to add some humanity, and layered the covers with mathematical diagrams for a more sci-fi look. Deep tones of orange, green, and purple not only illustrate the theme of the novels, but also forecast what the reader will encounter along the way in each world. 3 LOPEZ WEDDING A crystal inspired wedding suite In today’s saturated wedding market, wedding invitation design can be repetitive, cumbersome, and unoriginal. This eye-catching crystal inspired wedding suite is tailor-made for the non-traditional couple that embraces fun, fashion, and life itself. In order to translate this idea to paper, I turned to the almighty crystal. Bismuth’s maze-like formations are echoed in the use of Argon, a geometric typeface with endless lines. Futura Condensed Medium with its sharp edges compliment Argon, evoking the faceted planes of quartz, amethyst, and golden pyrite. A holographic foil printing technique is both unique and dazzling; a sure-fire way to stand out in the crowd. Its shimmer reflects the crystalline quality of gemstones by providing hues that constantly change and dance in the light.

4 BRASS & STEAM A vintage infused bar
Brass & Steam is a vintage infused bar and eatery located in the DUMBO neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY. Evoking the days of traveling by train paired with the beauty of ornate window etchings, Brass & Steam brings the past to the present for young, hip New Yorkers 25-35 years old. Top-notch ales, bygone cocktails, and organic ingredient pairings set this bar apart from its Brooklyn competitors. To bring this vision to life, I used Java Heritages typeface with its vintage styling and upscale details. Decorative embellishments paired with quirky font Abraham Lincoln and traditional Baskerville allow the brand’s bold personality to shine. White, brass, and navy shades were used in order to add a sophistication and richness reminiscent of old high-society. The result? Classic sophistication with a modern twist.

5 INGENIUM THEATER Los Angeles theater & play season Ingenium is a Los Angeles based theater that is premiering a new season titled “Metamorphosis.” This season contains William Shakespeare’s famous “Hamlet,” Yasmina Reza’s modern-day “God of Carnage,” and Jean-Paul Sartre’s classic “No Exit.” Each play touches on the theme of change for the characters and unearths behaviors that shift and move throughout the story. Thus, they alter their lives via metamorphosis. The idea of changing one’s self is messy and chaotic, so I chose to recreate this feeling with three different typefaces and varying sizes. A palette of red, teal, and black was used to streamline focus on the type and illustrate complicated emotions. The program comes in a red, transparent sleeve providing the reader with a transformative experience when it is removed. Each part of the program unfolds to bring new information to light, thus allowing the patron to experience what is to come this season. 6 CALEDONIA AIRWAYS A luxury Scottish airline Caledonia Airways is a luxury business airline that is based in Scotland, and offers service to the surrounding areas of the U.K. Caledonia provides upscale amenities and unmatched service to the business community. The primary target audience is business people from 30-45 years old who are seeking luxury and tranquility in the air when traveling for work. Since the thistle is Scotland’s official flower, it was used as the main image in the logo and one of the patterns. Elements like curved branches and leaves add a layer of regality and further illustrate the crest-like quality of the logo. Deeply hued plaid is reminiscent of traditional Scottish tartans and a rich brown evokes imagery of castle ruins. The mix of Scotland’s history and complimentary Scotch whiskey offered in flight, make this airline a true sanctuary in the sky.

7 SHEEPISH Organic wool for little ones Sheepish is an organic wool brand that specializes in creating quality goods for babies and toddlers. It provides knit blankets, clothing, mobiles, and toys that are all produced in environmentally sound ways. Sheepish wool does not contain harmful chemicals or dyes and it sources all of its wool from small, regional farms across the nation. It is committed to eco-friendly business practices by using recycled packaging and soy-based inks. To keep this line green and stylish, I used a limited color palette of black and white logo elements with pastel accents on packaging and tags. The sheep is hand-drawn to give a more natural feeling to the entire line of goods. A mix of the quirky Avaline Script with friendly slab serif Minty March is the perfect mixture of playful and sweet. Kraft paper is used as a foundation throughout the brand, which adds texture and further illustrates the organic mission statement of Sheepish. 8 DOS ALMAS Sparkling beverage inspired by SoCal and Baja Dos Almas–meaning “Two Souls”–is a sparkling beverage company that combines the cultures of San Diego and Baja to create a refreshing and exciting taste bud experience for all. Based in San Diego, the main focus is on using natural ingredients in each and every bottle. This brand is for those 21-35 year-olds who want to have a good time with friends whether at the beach, a barbecue, or game night at home. A colorful pattern takes inspiration from the traditional and ornate floral embroidery of Mexican garments. A large swath of vibrant paint frames the bottle's flavor in Spanish, evoking the art scenes that are famous in both San Diego and Ensenada. The entire logo is a mix of handwritten lettering and an altered typeface called KG Empire of Dirt. Elements from the pattern are infused in the logo and echo the brand’s playful quality.

9 JACOB’S PILLOW An annual dance festival Jacob’s Pillow is an annual festival dedicated to all things dance. It is located in the Berkshire Mountains of Western Massachusetts and runs for two months in the summer, providing exhibits, talks, performances, and classes for thousands of visitors from all over the globe. It has been a mecca for dancers since its first official festival year in 1940. Dancers regard their art’s history as sacred, which can sometimes reflect rigidity and stiffness. I wanted to combat these labels and create a more joyous, inviting vision for the festival. I used heavyweight sketch paper that was hand-cut and layered with texture to make a dancer and her tutu. The paper’s imperfect edges illustrate the festival’s rough terrain in the hills and surrounding mountains, while an ombré from red to yellow is reminiscent of summer heat. The nature silhouettes on the tutu not only relate to the scenery, but also summon imagery of dancers performing outdoors.
