SMASH GUTS & GRIT

SMASH is a hypothetical lifestyle brand that expands the world of tennis much further than the boundaries of a court and elicits intense excitement for the sport through its relentless, thrilling, and transcendent designs whereas its competitors are stuck in the status quo of tradition. It celebratesh how people can piece themselves back together after their breaking points to prove that their comeback is greater than any setback. It is a journey of battling through the highs and lows of sport and life - a story of destruction to fruition. “Tennis is a perfect combination of violent action taking place in an atmosphere of total tranquility.” -Billie Jean King

QUEENS CHILD ADVOCACY CENTER REDESIGN TRAUMA INFORMED | NATURE INSPIRED | ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY

The Queens Child Advocacy Center (QCAC) Redesign was a community service team project organized through NYSID during the summer of 2017. The QCAC works to move victims of physical and sexual abuse aged 0-18 from crisis to confidence. Our goal was to transform the cluttered, overstimulating child friendly waiting room into a healing, truama informed safe space for kids, teens, parents, and employees. In the 8 week span of this redesign, we pitched our ideas and drawings to the inspiring employees on multiple occasions in order to deliver an environment that would work beautifully for them. The project has received a $20,000 donation so far to begin renovations as we continue to volunteer our time to a center that enables youth to transition into safer environments.

Queens Child Advocacy Center Design Concept Trauma Informed | Nature Inspired | Environmentally Friendly

RESEARCH

TRAUMA INFORMED DESIGN PRINCIPLES • Realize impact of trauma • Recognize signs & symptoms • Respond by integrating knowledge of trauma • Resist re-traumatization by creating a safe space The incorporation of nature acts as a positive healing distraction which can enable a child to be more receptive to treatment. Providing a cohesive, safe environment with pockets of privacy & agency for all ages can aid in the process of crisis to confidence. • Play spaces give a sense of control & are therefore important tools for reducing tension & anxiety A sense of orientation, order, and flow are essential for reducing stress. CASA JUNIPERO A DAY HOME FOR THOSE LIVING WITH ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE. Casa Junipero is an outpatient center for people battling Alzheimer’s Disease as well as family and friends who are impacted by the disease. This center is modeled after dementia villages that have recreated recognizable lifestyles in safe environments in order to maintain as much independence as possible - even though the disease seeks to strip that away from so many. By retaining a sense of independence and partaking in activities that are familiar to patients, studies have shown that patients may deteriorate less rapidly. Therefore, Casa Junipero aims to mirror a quaint Southern California town where different activities are just a stroll away and patients are free to wander. However, in this setting, all clerks, cashiers, servers, etc. are also healthcare professionals who are able to assist patients at any time. Through the combination of all these features, this day home serves as a community for Alzheimer’s patients where they are allowed to live as they wish while also receiving quality and convenient healthcare services.

RIGHT TO PLAY WHEN CHILDREN PLAY, THE WORLD WINS Right to play is a global non-profit organization that uses the power of play to educate and empower children to overcome the effects of poverty, conflict, and disease in disadvantaged communities. In this office design for their hypothetical new headquarters in NYC, inspiration was drawn from their founding story - that of a young Eritrean boy who was popular for the soccer ball he created with his long sleeves. Thus, this space seeks to exude a playfulness by magnifying all the different materials we use in sports equipment and by implementing the shapes we see in courts or fields. By doing so, the environment preaches its own motto: that everyone has the right to play.

RIGHT TO PLAY REGIONAL OFFICE RESTROOM

All over the globe, children find ways to play no matter the circumstances - even if that means creating their own soccer balls. In this regional office restroom the different materials used to play are still celebrated in conjunction with circles that represent a playful, rhythmic pathway that’s headed towards a more unified and peaceful world.
