I’m a Mixed-Race Child and It’s Fun It’s hard keeping up with two completely different cultures. Two different languages, holidays, countries and family. It’s difficult but I’ll tell you how I deal with it. Firstly, I’m a mix of Hispanic, South Korean and a teenie weenie bit of African American. My mother is a fine independent Mexican women. My father happens to be like me, mixed. He is what we like to call “blasian”. Blasian is a modern slang for “black and Asian”. On my dad’s side, they’re just Asian looking people with really curly hair but not me! I was the first kid of them all to have straight hair! I bet it sounds cool but it’s actually pretty hard. Language barriers are hard enough but if you know a little from each side you’re fine. Growing up I learned a little Spanish here and there. I had to teach myself Korean and it is hard! Their was even and still is a phase where I got so used to both languages, that I sort of mixed them up. Silly me right? But both languages are equally beautiful. My mother and all my aunts and uncles speak Spanish fluently. My grandmother speaks Korean fluently as well. I usually practice or ask her for words that I don’t know or cannot pronounce. It’s fun learning something everyday. Love food? Me too! The greatest thing about having two cultures is the food! Try having one night of poccole and greasy yet delicious tacos and the next, Korean Barbeque!! It’s amazing but it’s was difficult to realize that either side couldn’t make the other. My Korean grandmother doesn’t know how to make tamales. My mother doesn’t know how to steam white rice. It’s displeasing but I had to get over it. Food is still food, right? Ever heard about Kpop? Or maybe tejano music? I grew up listening to both and boy is it a ride! Both genres are amazing. There’s different vibes, concepts, moods even fashion. My favorite Tejano legend is Selena Quintanilla. She was beautiful and so talented. My favorite songs of her were “Conbarde” and “Dame un beso” Both songs were a groovy and calm kinda song. That’s my type of style. In the Kpop world, my favorite female artist is Kim Taeyeon (김태연). She is the leader and main vocalist from Girls Generation. She is unimaginably beautiful and her vocals are over the top. From her, my favorite songs are “Fashion” and “11:11”. Both sides of music are completely different but I love both to death. Being mixed is hard but if you make the most of it and just ask you’ll love it.
