DINNER FOR ASHLAND SENIORS Don’t forget the Senior Citizens Dinner sponsored by the Ashland United Methodist Women. It will be on Thursday at noon, the 18th of November, at the St. Augustine Catholic Hall. This will be the 32nd year we have been able to offer the dinner as a gift to the Seniors of the community. (In most cases this will be Seniors serving Seniors!!) We use a capital ―S‖ on spelling Seniors because they are important to our Village in every way. Reservations are not necessary but are requested. Please call Pat Houser at 476-3460 or Eleanor Cosner at 4523409. Carry-out service is available if you are unable to come to the hall. If a ride is needed ask when you make your reservation.
There is a Veteran's Day assembly at A-C Central High School on November 11th 2010. It is from 8:20-8:50 A.M. There will also be a collection stand for people to drop off their goods for current soldiers. They will be collecting eye wash, nasal spray, Chap-stick, bandannas, goggles/sunglasses, back scratchers, bubble wrap, yo-yo's, bubbles, etc. The community is welcome to join and we are welcoming any and all donations to be sent to the soldiers. The Cass County Health Dept. will be there again this year to do blood pressure checks and flu shots. We do want to thank them for the services they provide and also offer thanks to the Catholic Church for the use of their handicapped accessible building.

For the next few months, the Village of Ashland will be putting out information about the village through The Scoop. If you have any questions you would like answered in a public forum, please forward them to Mary Ann at Village Hall and we will try to answer them. If you like this way of broadcasting information to the community, please lets us or The Scoop know and we will continue these newsletters. The water line connections with North Morgan and Cass Rural Water are complete and on line. In fact, the village used those lines exclusively for our water supply beginning on October 21st until October 27th. During this period, Wallbaum Construction completed the final installation of water lines into our water system and cleaned out and inspected our clear well, the underground water storage tank at the water plant. The final switch over to the new system will be complete sometime early in 2011, when Virginia brings their new water treatment plant online. Elections next April 5th will include three openings on the village board. If you have a desire to serve your fellow citizens, this is your opportunity. Petitions may be picked up now and MUST be returned by December 20, 2010. You will need between 16 and 66 signatures on your petitions. Please see Mary Ann for a packet. The Illinois Music Educators Association sponsors district festivals that lead into the All-State Festival annually. Students audition in early October for a spot in the prestigious groups and high school students hope that the audition that they put in front of the judges is good enough to land them a spot in the All-State Band in January. Several students auditioned from A-C Central on Monday Oct. 11 and were selected in the district band which will present a concert on the campus of Western Illinois University on Nov 6. This years senior band will include Ms. Haley Pfaffe, daughter of Jeff and Lana Pfaffe, playing her bari sax under the direction of Dr. Pete Griffin from the University of Illinois. Selected to participate in the JH band were Hoaby Hoagland, son of Ron & Dawn Hoagland, who is a tuba player and Emma Lynn, daughter of Sylvia Stone. Emma plays the clarinet. The junior high band will be under the direction of Mr. Tim Loest who is currently the director of bands in the Itasca School District. The bands will present a concert in Western Hall on the campus of WIU on Oct 11. Admission will be $2 for students and $3 for adults.

November 2010 WHEN I AM WEAK, THEN I AM STRONG Friends, That title makes no sense; but it is true!!! When you read through the books of the Bible that Paul wrote you begin to understand that his strength came from God !!! Whenever he was in prison, or in pain, or suffering, he continued to praise God because when he was weak, God’s strength came out in him. I can identify with Paul. I used to think I could do it ALL by myself. Then I had a stroke in 2004. I found out quick I could do nothing without God!!! Billy Graham said, ―All that I have been able to do I owe to Jesus Christ.‖ I found out I need to be fully immersed in God’s will AND have His will fully immersed in me to do what He wants me to do. But then, I lose my patience – I don’t listen to Him – I get caught up in the ways of the world – I AM WEAK! Then I pray – here comes His strength!!! He is looking for the weak and humble, then His work can happen through them! When you lose your patience – when you fail to listen to Him – when you have trouble seeing the forest for the trees – pray to Him – cry out to Him – bow down to Him – then you will feel His presence and His strength!! Remember – We are ALL a work in progress! Have a great month! See you in December. The Cass County Music Festival was held at Beardstown High School on Wednesday Oct 20, 2010. This annual event joins the junior high band members from A-C Central, Beardstown, Our Saviors and Virginia. The groups prepare several selections and then come together to prepare a concert for the public that evening. The band was under the direction of Mr. Dave Helm who is currently the director of bands at Mt. Pulaski. The ACV Basketball team will be hosting a Trivia Night on Saturday, November 13th at 7pm in the cafeteria of the school in Ashland. The teams will consist of a maximum of 8 players and their will be an entry fee of $80 per team. There will also be a 50/50 drawing, Free Throw contest for different age groups and a 3Point contest for anyone, a minimal fee will be asked for these games. The A-C Central PTO is asking the community members of Chandlerville and Ashland to start clipping Box Tops for Education. This is a great way to bring additional funding to our schools. A-C Central High School will present ―Stocking Stuffers‖ in the Ashland gym at 7 pm Friday, November19th and Saturday, November 20th. The show is a series of nine short holiday skits involving various Christmas characters and storylines, including Donner and Blitzen, Barbie and Ken, Santa’s elves, baby dolls, and the Easter Bunny. Students involved are Brandon Smith, Cody Miller, Lindsay Allan, Sarah Pherigo, Teagan Smith, Kayla Anderson, Lindsey Cole, Lyndzie Pinney, Allyson Quick, Austin Fields, Cerys Boston, Hannah Miller, Parrish Smith, & Ty Kesselring. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children and can be purchased at the door. Come out and support the arts in our schools and get an early start to your holiday spirit!
ASHLAND-AREA FARM FAMILY HAS SUSTAINABLE VISION OF THE FUTURE On a cloudy Thursday, Chad Wallace plants trees with his father Rodney Wallace. Thursdays are usually the day the family goes to market, but Chad Wallace takes this day to plant apple, cherry and plum trees after a few of them were hit by lightning last year. ―Sometimes you have to sacrifice a day for the future,‖ he said, focusing on pushing dirt away with his shovel as he tries to beat the impending rain. The future of the 18-acre farm at 2585 LiterberryPrentice Road looks to be an organic one. Although Oak Tree Organics is not yet certified organic, certification is largely a matter of paperwork. As Chad Wallace plants trees, he explains he hopes by the time they’re ready to produce fruit, which will probably take about four years, they will be considered organic. A family affair When Chad Wallace was named the state’s sustainable farmer of the year this year, it may have been his name on the award but it ―takes a family,‖ he said. In 1972, Rodney Wallace moved from his father’s farm after buying land adjacent. When Chad Wallace took over seven years ago, ―he moved in and then moved me out,‖ Rodney Wallace said. Chad Wallace laughs. ―I didn’t move you out.‖ ―You helped me move stuff.‖ ―Yeah, but it wasn’t my idea,‖ Chad Wallace responds. Rodney Wallace still helps and so does Chad Wallace’s father-and mother-in-law, Larry and Judy Walsh. His wife, Dana Wallace, has a job in Springfield but goes to the farmers markets every Saturday. Seventeenyear-old Kyle Wallace is quite a bit bigger than Chad Wallace, so he helps with the more labor intensive work. With school back in session and Kyle Wallace wrapping up his senior year at A-C Central High School, it’s been quite an adjustment because Chad Wallace can’t send him out in the morning anymore to check for bugs on the trees. Kindergartner Erin Wallace loves pulling carrots and getting eggs. She has a ―vast knowledge of things kids her age normally wouldn’t know,‖ Chad Wallace said. Since birth, Erin Wallace’s had a hand in the farm. She only spent one year in daycare, having joined Chad Wallace at the markets in a stroller the rest of the time. ―We spend a lot of time together,‖ he said. ―It’s not all perfect but as a family, I think we’re closer.‖ Amanda Wallace echoes the sentiment. ―Family is probably the lost important part of my life,‖ she said. ―I love my family to death. I couldn’t be where I am now without them.‖ The next generation Amanda Wallace helps plant and pick items on the field but she also does something the family has only recently become more serious about: She keeps records for purchases, sending out community-supported agriculture receipts and plugging in the numbers on the sales from the online and farmers markets.
