Honorable Hydrants After seeing a fire hydrant painted red & blue with white stars in Judy Guffy’s yard this summer, Lisa and Larry Cave decided to paint all of the fire hydrants in Ashland this way as a tribute to Military personnel here in Ashland; those who are serving now, and those who have served before. They have been working on this project as a way to show pride in our country and our community. Lisa and Larry have two sons in the Military; Curtis who leaves for Afghanistan in October and Adam who returned from Bagdad in January. Lisa stressed this project is not only for their sons, but all of the sons and daughters who are serving now and have served before. Thank you Lisa and Larry, they look fantastic.

MILDRED LEAHY GRANTS AWARD The Leahy Scholarship Committee of the Ashland United Methodist Church is privileged to announce the recipients of the Leahy benefits. This is our 20th year of being able to assist the youth of the Ashland Community. This year only one scholarship was awarded. Katherine, the daughter of Terry and Rhonda Beauchamp was the recipient. This will be Katherine’s final year to complete her college education at the O’Moore College of Design in Franklin, Tennessee. With her excellent work ethic and her outlook on the future, she will make an excellent addition to any business she decides to join. We, the Leahy Committee, offer her our best wishes for her future. We also were able to help the 2nd Saturday program to fund their ministry to the youth of the Ashland Community. Their program is open to any religious background and it is exciting for us to realize we are laying a good foundation for their Christian Education. We ask God’s Blessing on these recipients of the Leahy awards. This is what Mildred Leahy chose to do, to help the youth of our community.

Discussion regarding the construction grant was the main focus of the Virginia board meeting on Monday, July 19 th. The board discussed demolishing the 1912 and 1938 portions of the building and rebuilding those portions of the school with the eligible grant proceeds. Architects from JB Petty were present at the meeting and requested more direction from the school board. There will be a special committee meeting of the Virginia school board on Thursday, July 22 at 6:30 in the superintendant’s office. This meeting is open to the public and the public is encouraged to attend. Hear firsthand the direction the board plans to take, the proposal from the architect and input from the financial planner. There is much work to be completed by August 16 in order for a referendum to be placed on the November ballot. The voters must approve this referendum in order to receive the grant funds. The Committee of Ten (COT) met on Tuesday, July 20th. Discussion from the public focused on the COT’s approval of the at-large election of school board members at the beginning of the meeting. To clarify, with the at-large election option all voters will vote for all seven seats on the April 2011 ballot, regardless of location; with the districting option of electing school board members, the consolidated district would be divided into seven equal districts and the voters would only be able to vote for one representative from their respective district on the April 2011 ballot and in each future election. Discussion regarding recommendations of attendance centers was held with each committee member making their recommendation in a round table discussion. A motion was made for the high school attendance center to be located in Ashland and passed by a 8-2 vote. The COT recommends the high school location in Ashland. Elementary and middle school locations were discussed, no action was taken. Six subcommittees were formed; curriculum, finance, transportation, buildings & grounds, extracurricular, promotions. If you are interested in serving on any of these committees, please contact a COT member ASAP. The A-C Central board meeting was held on Wednesday, July 21st. The board held discussion regarding the at-large school board election option chosen by the COT. The CARE Group plans on supporting the COT in educating the voters regarding this option. Discussion was also held regarding the Virginia construction grant. Matt Werner, Virginia board president, was at the meeting to answer any questions the A-C board had regarding this grant. He addressed the need for Virginia to repair the Virginia building and by doing so, in the end be a better partner in consolidation. UPCOMING DATES: Tuesday, August 3 - tentative date for Virginia special board meeting regarding construction grant. Thursday, August 5 - 7:30pm – COT Meeting at Virginia office The CARE Group continues to support consolidation and continues to support the Committee of Ten in moving forward towards placing consolidation on the April 2011 ballot so the voters may determine the fate of our school districts. Please plan on attending some of these important meetings and let your voice be heard.

We are so appreciative for the plaque given in Tom Cosner’s honor at the Ashland Summer Days. The property the new Ashland Fire Department was built on was Tom’s gift to the Village of Ashland. Thanks to the Village of Ashland, the Ashland Fire Department, the American Legion, and the V.F.W. whose combined efforts provided the plaque. We feel Tom has received the respect he deserved for his generous gift and it will now be made known to everyone who reads the plaque. It was well made and very attractive and will be installed on the wall outside the fire department building. Thanks to all! Respectfully, L to R: Judy Cosner, Mayor Dave Handy, and Jeff DeGeal

SUMMER DAYS A SUCCESS The Ashland Community Club met in July to review the finances of the celebration and determined that, after the outstanding bills are paid, the bank account should still be in the black. This could not happen without the contributions of local businesses and many members of the community. One of the items on the agenda for the meeting was ―thank you’s‖ and, after creating a seemingly endless list, it was determined that MANY MORE people stepped up to help this year than ever before. THANK YOU to all of you --those who were asked and graciously agreed, those who were ―drafted‖ on the spot, and the special people who saw a need and stepped in to fill it. Everyone working together makes our town what it is. Some new people have volunteered to be a part of the group to help plan next year’s events. More are welcome to join at any time. The next meeting of the Community Club will be Thursday, Sept. 23. If you would like to be on the list to receive a reminder of the meeting, contact Judy Fulton. The main item on September’s meeting will be the Home Tour, Christmas Kick-Off, on Sunday, November 28. THANK YOU, ASHLAND, for another successful Summer Days Celebration!!
